1. My Square Meter Investigation
The Task:
I was asked to make the 1m2 with newspaper. Then, I needed to
change the perimeter of the shape, but keep the area the same. This is
calledconservation of area.
It was a fun investigation because I could play with area and
perimeter. It was challenging for me because I had to make a shape
without losing any area.
Original Shape:
The dimensions of my shape were 1m x
1m, or 100cm by 100cm. This shape was
a square. It had an area of 1m2 or
10,000cm2. It had a perimeter of 400cm
or 4m.
New Shape:
My new shape was irregular hexagon. The
area of my new shape was still 1m2 or
10,000cm2. I know this because we
should make a shape without losing area
and the first shape had an area of 1m2.The
perimeter of my new shape isgreater than
the original. It is 545cm or 5.45m. I
worked this out by adding all the sides.I
think the new perimeter is greater
because it has more long sides.
Reflection:
During this investigation, I learned that perimetercan be greater,
even when area is the same. It made me think about how to make
some shapes with same perimeter, but different area. I enjoyed
making the shape. I still have questions about division. I would like to
investigate divisionnext.
