1. My Square Meter Investigation
The Task:
I was asked to make a one square meter area newspaper. Then, I
needed to change the perimeter of the shape, but keep the area the
same. This is calledconservation of area.
It was a fun investigation because we can makedifferent shapes. It
was challenging for me because it is hard to measure exactly.
Original Shape:
The dimensions of my shape were1 m x
1m, or 100cm by 100cm. This shape was a
square. It had an area of 1m2 or100cm2.
It had a perimeter of 400cm or 4m.
New Shape:
My new shape was anicosagon.The
area of my new shape was still 1m2
or 100cm2. I know this because I
make the new shape by using the
square paper.The perimeter of my
new shape isgreater than the
original. It is1991cm or 19.91m. I
worked this out bymeasuringI think
the new perimeter is greater
because we measured more sides.
Reflection:
During this investigation, I learned that we needed to help each other
as a group. It made me think about doing this kind of activity again. I
enjoyed measuring shape. I still have questions about perimeter. I
would like to investigate triangle perimeter next.
