1. My Square Meter Investigation
The Task:
I was asked to make 1m2 square with newspaper. I used tape,
scissors and rulers. Then, I needed to change the perimeter of the
shape, but keep the area the same. This is calledconservation of
area.
It was a fun investigation because I like making things. It was
challenging for me because each side needed to
be exactly 1m so I had to be very careful with
my measuring.
Original Shape:
The dimensions of my shape were 1m x 1m, or
100cm by 100cm. This shape was a square. It
had an area of 1m2 or 10,000cm2. It had a
perimeter of 400cm or 4m.
New Shape:
My new shape was an
irregular hexagon. The
area of my new shape was
still 1m2 or 10,000cm2. I
know this because we
didn’t lose any area from
the newspaper piece. The
perimeter of my new
shape isgreater than the
original. It is 545cm or
5.45m. I worked this out
by measuring all the sides
with rulers and adding
them together.I think the new perimeter is greater because the side
lengths are much more greater.
Reflection:
During this investigation, I learned that if we don’t lose any area and
cut a shape then it can have a different perimeter but the same area.
It made me think about my house’s roof shape because the new
shape is similar to my house’s roof.I enjoyed making the shape. I
2. still have questions about space so I would like to investigate
3dimensional shapesnext.
