My Square Meter Investigation

The Task:
I was asked to makea square meter using newspaper, tape, scissors
and rulers. Then, I needed to change the of the shape, but keep the
area the same. This is called conversation of area.

It was a fun investigation because we made new shape in to
hanglider. It was challenging for me because we got stuck a lot while
we did this project.

Original Shape:
The dimensions of my shape were 1m x
1m, or 100cm by 100cm. This shape was
a square.It had an area of 1 m2 or
10,000 cm2. It had a perimeter of
400cm or 4m.




New Shape:
My new shape was a hexagon.The area
of my new shape was still 1m2 or 10,000
cm2. I know this because we didn’t loose
any pieces of newspaper so the area was
the same. The perimeter of my new
shape isgreater than the original. It is
545cm or 5.45m. I worked this out by
measuring all sides and adding them
together.I think the new perimeter is
greater because it have more sides.


Reflection:
During this investigation, I learned that if a shape is different it could
still have same area. It made me think about math&shape and how
they are interesting.I enjoyed designing and making the shape. I still
have questions about why does area could be same when we have
different perimeters. I would like to play shape game next.
