U.s. Military Regime And Its Policies
Since General Ne Win's seizure of power in 1962, the military regime controlling Myanmar has
called itself many things. Throughout the 1960s to 80s, it was the Burmese Socialist Programme
Party; during the late 80s to 90s, it was State Peace and Development Council; and in the present
day they're known as the State Law and Order Restoration Council. Though each of these different
names represent a different era of Burmese military control, with different policies and different
political dynamics, one thing is for certain: no matter the name, figurative political head, or
purported change in objectives, the military regime is still firmly entrenched into the country's
political workings – and they wish to keep it this way. As the Burmese people look to the future, this
is the biggest and most obvious obstacle standing in the way of progress. There is much debate and
discussion amongst the international community and within Myanmar itself as to how the Burmese
should move forward, but it is unanimous that the problem lies fundamentally with the military
regime and its policies. Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy seek to solve
this problem through the ousting of the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC). She
chooses to do this not through an insurgency–lead coup d'etat or mass uprising, but rather through
political maneuvership that promotes democratization (i.e. meaningful citizen representation in
parliament), constitutional reforms, and

Myanmar Research Paper In 1989 the country formerly known as Burma switched its name to
Myanmar, meaning the "fast and strong people". Burma or Myanmar, began as individual states
with several powerful monarchs, over time the British government took over. This resulted in the
First Anglo–Burmese War that lasted from 1824–1826. The most respected of Myanmar's military
leaders during the war was Maha Bandula, who later died in battle. The British went on to win the
war and separate Myanmar into separate colonies in favor of certain ethnicities. Burma gained its
independence when a group called the "Thirty Comrades" created the Burmese Independence Army
and fought with Japan in World War II. The Army believed that if Japan won then they would grant
their country freedom, however when Japan began to weaken the group immediately informed the
British Military and agreed to help the British win the war. Aung San was the leader of Burma at the

Aung San Suu Kyi was kept in house arrest for six years. During those six years, she had the option
of leaving and never returning to Burma. However, she was strong in her decision to stay in Burma
to lead the NLD and fight against the corrupt government. Aung San Suu Kyi's father, Aung San,
was a student, devoted in fighting for independence from the British. Britain seized Burma and
abolished the monarchy. Aung San and his friends, the Thakins, encouraged schools to start striking
back. In the year 1938, many schools and students were joined by peasants and workers to protest
against British rule. Meanwhile, the Thakins joined Japan to force the British out of Burma during
WWII. However, Japan became worse oppressors than Britain, pretending

Argumentative Essay On Rohingya
Described as the world's most persecuted people, 1.1 million Rohingya people live in Myanmar.
They live predominately in Rakhine state, where they have co–existed uneasily alongside Buddhists
for decades.Rohingya people say they are descendants of Muslims, perhaps Persian and Arab
traders, who came to Myanmar generations ago. Unlike the Buddhist community, they speak a
language similar to the Bengali dialect of Chittagong in Bangladesh.
The Rohingya are reviled by many in Myanmar as illegal immigrants and they suffer from
systematic discrimination. The Myanmar government treats them as stateless people, denying them
citizenship. Stringent restrictions have been placed on Rohingya people's freedom of movement,
access to medical assistance, education and other basic services.
Violence broke out in northern Rakhine state on 25 August, when militants attacked government
forces. In response, security forces supported by Buddhist military launched a "clearance operation".
Refugees have spoken of massacres in villages, where they say soldiers raided and burned their
homes. The government claims the Rohingya have burned their own homes and killed Buddhists
and Hindus. It says that the military is targeting terrorists, including the Arakan RohingyaSalvation
Army (Arsa), the group that claimed responsibility for the August attacks.
According to the most recently available data from the United Nations in May, more than 168,000
Rohingya have fledMyanmar since 2012.Following violence

The Failure and Rebirth of Burmese Nationalism Essay
All people in the world strive to find a sense of belonging. This sense is coupled with ethnic
identities, cultural customs, and social implications. The groups that inhabit the corner of the world,
now known as Myanmar, have had great struggles and upheavals through the last century. They
have been stricken with World War, independence struggles, as well as military dictatorship. The
Burmese groups have tried with diligence to establish their own states, but in the end all has fallen
upon them and their tale is one of grief and sadness. The failure of Burmese nationalist movement is
through the conflicting interests of the world, the clashes between Burmese ideology, and the
differences of ethnic acceptance. However badly the movement ... Show more content on

They wanted freedom from British rule and when WWII started Aung San and 29 others, known
collectively as the "Thirty Comrades" left Burma to train in Japan, hoping for liberation ("Burma").
Promises of liberation were made by Japan but after a few years, it was clear that Japan did not wish
for Burmese autonomy. Recognizing this fact, Aung San hurried quickly to negotiate a deal with the
British. He convinced the British to give them their national freedom if they were to fight the
Japanese on behalf of the British. The allied powers won and Britain started the process of halting
its operations in Burma. Aung San was hailed for his achievement of independence from Britain
though the future of Burma was not to be so lucky. Even though he was seen as a controversial
figure due to his communist politics, he was able to unite the minority groups of Burma and secure
the writing of a constitution, agreeing to officially end British control. In July of 1947, a year before
the official "independence" of Burma, Aung San and most of his cabinet were sadly murdered by an
enemy party (Badertscher). That day would be forever marked in Burmese history and San's dreams
were a glimpse at what could have happened if political thought had been more similar and other
resentments were able to be overlooked. Aung San's death and the effects show the power that

Oppressed People Essay
The Oppressed People of Burma
Burma, like many other Southeast Asian nations, is a land of much culture and diversity of ethnic
groups. Unfortunately, unlike the people of other nations, the people of Burma have been stripped of
their human rights. Since the military junta had overtaken the Burmese government in 1988, the
people of Burma have been among the most oppressed people in the world. The continuation of the
government's brutality has caught the attention of many outside nations around the world who
increasingly have been intervening in Burma's issues to help its people. As these occurrences are a
major issue for the people of Burma, these problems are not restricted to its boundaries. They are

Before that time, they had been a British colony since 1885. After fourteen years as an independent
country, they removed their government in 1962 and finally adopted a new constitution in 1974,
becoming a socialist republic. Shortly thereafter in 1988, the country's welfare turned into a brutal
military government and the military established a State Law and Order Resolution Council
(SLORC) to govern the country. Finally, in 1989 the country's name changed from Burma to
Myanmar, a name change that would parallel a change in the way the people of Burma would
appreciate their lives prior to 1988.
The Problem
Ever since Burma's government turned into a military power, the devastation that the people have
had to endure has led to intense oppression. This has become a problematic issue for Burma
including its neighboring countries such as Thailand. The government has acted inhumanely
towards its people. The oppressive acts include forced unpaid labor among its people, including its
children and the elderly. Specifically, children have been forced to labor in the fields of beans,
bricks, chilies, corn, pineapple, rice, rubber, sugarcane, and teak. Also, the government has also
forced nearly half a million of its people to move from their homes so that various projects of
construction and resource extraction can be conducted. An example of such a project is

South Suu Kyi 's Freedom From Fear Speech
Freedom, democracy and human rights were the ideals that Burma is lacking under the reign of the
military junta led by Ne Win and his Socialist Party for fifty years. The socialist ideals have only
brought fear and poverty to the people of Burma and the protests against the military government
were always brutally suppressed. Aung San Suu Kyi, daughter of the national hero, General Aung
San who was assassinated by his rival after he fought for Burmese independence from England, was
filled with the ideals that her father fought for and became a leader for the people to unite them and
challenge the right to rule of the people in power. In Aung San Suu Kyi's Freedom From Fear

The speech reflected Suu Kyi's vision of Burma as a peaceful country and her courage which she
did use it in her favor to rouse the people who have long waited for a change. The purpose of the
speech was to made the people see a future Burma with a democratically elected government that
respects human rights and to take effective actions against the government through non–violent
confrontations. In Freedom from Fear speech, Suu Kyi begins by speaking the truth of how fear
corrupts all those wielding power and those that are being controlled. As Burma is under the
oppressive regime, she claimed that people may not be able to fight back with arms, but what they
can do is to get rid of fear from their minds, and embrace courage to bear a real revolution which
can only be succeeded if it is born of conviction that a change is desperately needed. Truth, justice
and compassion are the only barriers that can stand up against the government as a government that
is established with force and concern with only short term profits can never give the country the
whole democracy and human rights. Freedom from fear is the utmost importance in politics and
personal life as it is the start of a system that can help realize the declaration of human rights and
democracy. According to Suu Kyi, "As long as there are governments whose authority is founded on
coercion rather than on the mandate of the people and interest groups which place

'A text of timeless appeal is marked by effective construction of rhetoric to support its main ideas.'
Discuss this statement, making detailed reference to at least two speeches.
Great speeches are those which timelessly captivate audiences through their integrity and rhetoric
treatment. This is relevant to Margaret Atwood's speech in 1994, Spotty Handed Villainesses
(hereafter referred to as Villainesses), and Aung San Suu Kyi's speech in 1995, Keynote Address at
the Beijing World Conference on Women (hereafter referred to as Keynote). The ability of a speech
to resonate with audiences is dependent on their effective constructive of rhetoric to support the
orator's main ideas.

Atwood uses the rhetoric device of dirimens copulatio in the extract "what are novels anyway? Only
a very foolish person would attempt to give a definite answer to that", this hints at self–deprecation
and creates a sense of humility and textual integrity as she accept s this flaw in her argument so to
appear unbiased. Atwood argues that the depiction of women in literature ironically prevents
women's advancement, similarly Aung San Suu Kyo argues that the depiction of women in their
traditional roles of carers and nurturers has prevented their advancement in politics. Atwood
employs polyvocality to shift from complex arguments to the seemingly simplistic anecdote of the
eternal breakfast. Her literary knowledge and wit allows her to embody her message and complex
ideas to convey that she as a woman is complex. The speeches timelessness and treatment of
universal concerns through the construction of rhetoric support her argument and captivate the
attention of past and present audiences.
In 'Keynote', the composer effectively constructs rhetoric to addresses the universal issue of gender
inequality to satisfactorily call for social reform. Suu Kyi was a recognised activist for women's
right and was leader of the democracy movement in Burma. Similarly to Atwood, her context
allowed the audience to trust the speaker, enhancing her ability to engage audiences and increasing
the textual integrity of the speech. She argues that women need to gain a

Ethnic Cleansing In The Rohingya
Ethnic cleansing has not been recognized by the United Nations as an independent crime. Although,
it has been recognized as trying to rid one group of people from an area to make the other group
ethnically homogenous. To do this a group can try to promote fear in another group making them
want to leave so they do not feel safe anymore. Some of these acts can include murder, torture, rape,
etc. (Ethnic Cleansing, Un.org) This is exactly what is happening to the Rohingya in Myanmar.
They are being forced to leave their home and escape to neighboring countries because of
persecution by the primarily Buddhist, Myanmar. They are not allowed citizenship, are forced to
relocate, and been attacked by the Myanmar government on several occasions. Recent studies have
shown that over 160,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar and over 1,000 have been killed, including
innocent men, women, and children. (Myanmar: Who are the Rohingya, aljezzera.com) The
Rohingya have been in Myanmar since 1982 and not only have gotten no recognition but are not
even allowed citizenship. This is turn limits them to having no power or say in Myanmar. The
government made the Rohingya get foreign identity cards. This in turn, angered many of the
Rohingya for their families had been there for generations. Some Rohingya had even served in the
government prior to this. All their rights to go to school, work, travel, etc. were prohibited because
they were not able to be recognized as citizens. The Myanmar

Summary Of Martin Luther King And Aung San Suu
The two world known leaders, Martin Luther King, Jr. and India's Aung San Suu, were social
activists who believed that democracy could be achieved through peaceful resistant. Martin Luther
King Jr. believed that its people who sought to stand up against oppressor regimes and fight for
equal rights in the United States of America. On the other hand, the National league for democracy
leader, Aung San Suu Kyi who lived in Burma fought for democracy in her country. Thus, one is
right to argue out that the two world leaders, Martin Luther King Jr. of America and Aung San Suu
of India, believed in the spirit of democracy and equal rights for everybody in their respective
countries. The two leaders wrote articles that have remained to be historical in world politics. The
two wrote letters concerning how their societies looked like and how they wished democracy could
be achieved someday. During his time in jail, Martin Luther King Jr. wrote a letter titled 'The Letter
from Birmingham Jail.' The letter illustrated that he was in jail in Birmingham because of lack of
justice and on how discrimination should not be the order of the day. Comparing Aung San Suu's
article, 'In Quest of Democracy,' she expresses her opinion on democracy and how she has longed to
create democracy. In both articles, the two leaders try to reach out and express their value towards
achieving a democratic state. Aung San Suu Kyi reveals her efforts to achieve a democracy state and
how she had fought against the government through peaceful demonstrations. On the other hand,
Martin Luther King Jr. expresses on how injustices have taken over governance and on how people
should rise against such regimes. In their writings, the two leaders expressed their feelings how they
have fought for equal rights and more rights for their citizens through nonviolent means. They
reveal their own experiences in the fight for justice and democracy without violating the rights of
other people. In his letter, King ascertains that he experienced injustice while he was involved in the
Montgomery Bus Boycott as well as in the Albany Movement. As the head of those movements, Dr.
King wrote what he underwent though. 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice

The Pros And Cons Of Tourism In Myanmar

Democratic League has boycott the activity of "Visit Myanmar year 1996" because they thought
tourism was only financially benefited the regime, but NLD made a new statement in 2011, 15 years

And over two–thirds of the tourists who visited Myanmar in 2012 came from Asia. But a lot of the
customers did not come for vacation but for managing business. Based on the tourists' data of 2012,
the types of tourism that the customers have chosen were like the following: package tours occupied
23%; foreign independent travelers were accounted for 42%, business travelers were 20% and
others had 15%. Here we can see, two–thirds were independent international customers. Miyamoto

the unsound infrastructure in Myanmar; and the amount of independent tourists of 2012 were less

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi is a visionary that fights for Burma, her country, believing that people should
fight for democracy and freedom through non–violent movements. She had a clear knowledge of
her government and the government that she wanted for her people. As Aung Dan Suu said, it is not
power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the
scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it (page 682). In order to bring this matter to the
reader's attention, Aung San Suu employs several rhetorical strategies. She uses the three main
rhetorical devices: ethos, pathos, and logos to provide expert opinions on the subject. Through the
text "Freedom from fear", she made her ideas clear and define for ... Show more content on

Aung San Suu demonstrates ethos in her speech by contrasting her father with the pacifism of
Gandhi by stating: "The words used by Jawaharlal Nehru to describe Mahatma Gandhi could be
applied to Aung San." (page684). She uses that allusion to show her admiration for Gandhi, whom
she identifies as "Abhaya", the absence of fear from the mind. Aung San Suu strongly supports his
immense contribution to human rights, peace, and non–violent resistance to fight oppression. She
uses Gandhi as an example to persuade the reader that, just like him, she is worthy of trust and
respect. She wants to show them that she has the same beliefs, same ideology as Gandhi, whom with
his moral and methods brought down imperialism, colonialism and dictatorships. Kyi even
continues to say that "there is an inevitable sameness" when she compares Gandhi to her father. A
lot of attention focused on her because she is the daughter of once an influential man, so she knows
that if she talks about him they would have no problem as to follow her. When it comes to her
thoughts about Burma's governments, Kyi shows a good amount of planning and knowledge when
talking about economic growth. She states that: "Public dissatisfaction with economic hardships has
been seen as the chief cause of the movement in Burma, sparked off by the student demonstrations
of 1988." (page682).

Here are some of the highlights of the major barriers for each of the strategic option that would
negatively impact trust building with stakeholders.
Option 1: Alliance with Carlsberg
Contextual:
1. Unfamiliar cultures/language: Although both Heineken and Carlsberg are considered foreign
multinational companies, there are still differences in corporate governance and culture between the
two firms, which might create barriers for a successful partnership. Moreover, the difference in
culture between the two local JV company (Alliance Brewery Company and Golden Star Group)
will make the alliance more complicated. The difference in language used for these 4 parties
(English or Dutch for Heineken, Danish/English for Carlsberg, and Burmese for Alliance Brewery
Company and Golden Star Group) will create additional trust barrier during the negotiation process.
Organizational:
1. Personnel turnover: As Carlsberg already has a Bago plant located in the targeted expansion
regions , having a partnership with Carlsberg means the employment of the Carlsberg employees in
the Bago plant might be affected, as Heineken might want to put their own management/workers in
the plant based on the new ownership structure. It is not sure whether the Bago plant management
and workers will trust the new owner.
Option 2: Organic growth

Both are agree that oppressive institutions will only change from struggles of liberation. Austin (47)
argues while appealing to logic, King explained why it was in the leaders' pretext whether religious
or not to sympathize with the masses in their plight highlighting the ugliness of injustice for he says,
"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". By using innuendos, King criticizes those
who turn a blind eye to injustices around them. Suu Kyi also digs deep to the injustices of the
military regimes in Burma that viewed democracy as western ideology and alien to non–Western
world so that they would cling to the reigns of power without opposition (propaganda). Though both
texts appeal for peaceful negotiations, to achieve rights of the people, King implies that if the
oppressive institutions do not give in, the masses should act in a manner which forces for a
resolution. The situation depicted by Suu Kyi in Burma is of political injustices; the rights of the
Burmese to free and fair elections in a democratic nation are negated by despotic leaders who do not
practice the Buddhist traditions. According to Austin (82) Suu Kyi became the voice of the people
and through her the masses have seen the authoritarian rule which is not acting in their best
interests. King presents the social injustices that the blacks and the minorities in American society

Questions:
1) What key event happened in 1947, as depicted early in the film, and how do you feel this may
have affected the young Aung San Suu Kyi's attitude toward politics in her later life?
In 1947, Kyi was only 2 years old when her father led a movement for the independence of Burma.
Named Aung San, her father paved the way for the independence of Burma. However, shortly after
the independence, he was assassinated along with his several colleagues. The people who
assassinated him were masked and in proper uniforms.
After the incident, Kyi was sent to England, however, this incident would have made her revengeful
that she used in a positive sense to support democracy and betterment of Burma.

many people in hospital and surroundings who not only praised and remembered her father but also

which leader to research for my final paper I looked to find someone who possessed Bennis' stated
traits of a great leader. I chose the activist and political leader from the country of Burma
(Myanmar), Aung San Suu Kyi.
Biography (Early Life)
Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Burma on June 19, 1945. She was raised in Burma through her early
years then eventually joined her mother, Daw Khin Kyi in India. Both of her parents were heavily
involved in politics. Her mother, Daw Khin Kyi, was appointed as the Burmese ambassador to India
in 1960. Her father, General Aung San was a revered national hero in Burma, well known for
leading the Burmese people to independence. She was partly educated in India and eventually
attended St. Hugh's College and Oxford University, where she received her bachelor's and master's
degree in politics, economics and philosophy. Afterward, she worked in the United Nations
Secretariat in New York for two years. In 1972 she married a well–known scholar named Michael
Vaillancourt Aris. The pair went on to have two sons, Alexander and Kim. (BOOK BIOGRAPHY
OF HER LIFE) In 1988 Suu Kyi had just returned to Burma from studying abroad to tend to her ill
mother. She came home to find that chaos had erupted in Burma. Burma was in the midst of

The Political Engagement Of Burma
As Burma seeks to distance itself from China, despite Burma's failed engagement on the energy
front, India may very well be destined to be the major beneficiary. Burma has been grateful that
India has focused on education, provision of technology and services, and infrastructure just as
much as it has focused on energy (Maini, 2014). With all things considered, China virtually has
monopoly over Burma's offshore gas fields. Its economic and political engagement in Burma is
greater than any other country in the world beyond comparison.
Tribal Rights Approximately 33% of Burma's population consists of tribal groups. The population
ranges from the Wa and Kachins in the North, to the Chins in the Northwest, to the Rohingya

Contrary to popular belief, the tribes are weary of Burma becoming a democracy too soon. "Suu Kyi
is little more than a symbol of the wrong issue – democracy first! Ethnic rights and the balance of
ethnic power are preconditions for democracy (Kaplan, 2011). The granddaughter of famous
military general Aung San, Aung San Suu Kyi, has led Burma's National League of Democracy.
India has a strong relationship with Suu Kyi, as India supported Burma's democracy leader prior to
changing its policy to engagement with the regime. Suu Kyi studied in India, won the Nehru Award
for International Peace in 1982, and her family has strong ties to Jawaharlal Nehru (Myint–U,
2011). Although Suu Kyi and the tribes are against the same military, their visions for the order are
different by which a transition to a civilian government must to occur. The major concern of the
tribes is their rights through a federation that grants them self–rule. Suu Kyi specifically desires
elections, with less regard for the distinctive approach that will be necessary in order to satisfy the
tribes. India and Suu Kyi have distanced from each other, creating an opportunity for India to
advocate for the tribes. The tribes may very well look to India as a model to follow given India's

The Genocide in Myanmar Essay
Super Biased Research Paper In the past two years, a genocide has been going on in Myanmar that
little people around the world know about. The victims that have been affected by this mass murder
are the Rohingya Muslims, who originated from the subcontinent of India and are a minority group
that makes up 5% of the country's population. Today, the physical and emotional abuse endured by
the Rohingya Muslims prevails a prominent issue in the Middle East. Over in Burma, many of the
Muslims are murdered, beaten, or attacked by various religious groups, while government officials
either stand and watch or occasionally help. The Rohingya Muslims is a small Muslim group that

Aung San Suu Kyi. The two groups comprise of the Sangha, which is a community of Buddhist

Myanmar. In 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize for forming the National League
for Democracy and coincidently disapproved of violence and hoped that all ethnic groups could
"cooperate in harmony." Since then, she has denied any evidence of an ethnic cleansing, when asked
about it in an interview and she has talked about the Rohingya Muslims, stating that "They are not
our citizens." The president, Thein Sein, has done many things to contribute to the ethnic cleansing.
He has come up with ideas to end the ethnic cleansing, such as "expelling" the muslims from the
country or getting the United Nations to "resettle" them somewhere else.
The Rohingya Muslims have tried many things to cope with these attacks, resulting in both good
and bad outcomes. For most of the Rohingyas, they were either kicked

Analysis Of The Article ' Ralph Waldo Emerson '
Nhan Chau
Ms.Patton

10 September 2015 Aung San Suu Kyi Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American essayist,
philosopher, and poet, most of his philosophy is different from the real world. In the article "Self–
Reliance", Emerson's view of the non–conformist is important for each individual in order for them
to be independent and follow their own thoughts. Each individual should believe in themselves,
value their own experience, and share with society. Based on Emerson's belief, Aung San Suu Kyi is
a non– conformist because she is independent, has no fear, and believes what she does is right. It is
important for each individual to value their own self reliance, opinion, experience, believe in
themselves and be brave to do what they think is right. Believing in ourselves is the key to being
successful. Emerson comments, "To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in
private heart is true for all men – that is genius." (01). Emerson encouraged people to believe in
themselves, no matter what others thought. Each individual's mind has value and society has no
power to control us. We were born to enjoy life, so we have the power to do what we think is right.
Emerson also states, "It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to
live after our own, but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect
sweetness the independence of solitude." (05). People should stand up for themselves and

Pepsi Co Essay
PepsiCo gained entry to India in 1988 by creating a joint venture with the Punjab government–
owned Punjab Agro Industrial Corporation (PAIC) and Voltas India Limited. This joint venture
marketed and sold Lehar Pepsi until 1991 when the use of foreign brands was allowed; PepsiCo
bought out its partners and ended the joint venture in 1994. [1] Others claim that firstly Pepsi was
banned from import in India, in 1970, for having refused to release the list of its ingredients and in
1993, the ban was lifted, with Pepsi arriving on the market shortly afterwards. These controversies

But an Indian parliamentary committee, in 2004, backed up CSE's findings and a government–

Coke and PepsiCo opposed the move, arguing that lab tests aren't reliable enough to detect minute
traces of pesticides in complex drinks. On December 7, 2004, India's Supreme Court ruled that both
PepsiCo and competitor The Coca–Cola Company must label all cans and bottles of the respective
soft drinks with a consumer warning after tests showed unacceptable levels of residual pesticides.

Both companies continue to maintain that their products meet all international safety standards

also been alleged to practice "water piracy" due to its role in exploitation of ground water resources
resulting in scarcity of drinking water for the natives of Puthussery panchayat in the Palakkad

PepsiCo unit in the village.

Film Analysis Of The Lady
The Lady details the political upheavals that rocked Burma (also known as "Myanmar") during the
second half of the 20th century. The Lady is set primarily in Burma. However, many scenes are set
in England. The film, as a biopic, makes many claims about the events that occurred during Ang San
Suu Kyi's rise to power. It also prompts questions about the causes and effects of the events in the
movie. Additionally, the film creates an experience for the viewer that written history cannot

Suu Kyi did the same. Some in their country were concerned that both these leaders were too far
influenced by their time in the west. In order to disaffirm these concerns, Gandhi dressed like a
common Indian civilian. In this way, he was displaying his love for India over his love for England.
Suu kyi acted similarly. Suu Kyi was the daughter of the former leader of the country. She could
have dressed in all the opulence and affluence of royalty. Rather, in the film she dressed simply, and
elegantly. This dress choice reflected her graceful character. This costuming decision gave us insight
into Ang Suu's character. As Michelle Yeoh (the actress who played Suu Kyi) told Pagesix, a branch
of the NYTimes, the silk and cotton costumes are all Burmese. (Pagesix.com Staff) Additionally, the
movie pictured Suu Kyi in key scenes with flowers in her hair. These flowers made Kyi look
angelic.. To many westerners, these flowers represented the hope for a greater life that Ang San Suu
Kyi offered her nation. However, others viewed these flowers as a threat. Hannah Beech of
time.com writes about the real–life military dictators of Burma, "But they still act as if there is no
greater enemy than this slight woman with flowers in her hair" (Beech). The director made sure that
we noticed these flowers in Kyi's hair. There was a close–up shot of her placing the flowers in her
hair. There was a tracking shot that seemed to zoom in on the blossoms.

Burm A Military Dictatorship Country For Many Years
Burma used to be a military dictatorship country for several years. The military dictatorship system
was initially led by General Ne Win, who ruled the country with brutality since 1962. In 1974, the
government forced people to approve a new constitution for establishing a one–party (Burma
Socialist Program Party or BSPP) government with 415 members. General Ne Win changed the
name of the country to the Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma. They held a one–party

In September, during the congress meeting, a multi–party system was voted by 75% of the

and police forces also began to support the protestors (The protests of "8888"). Using excessive
brutal measures, the Burmese military made the protests stop and took the power again on
September 18, 1988. General Saw Maung abolished the 1974 constitution and established the "State
Law and Order Restoration Council(SLORC)". However, in 1997, the SLORC was broken down

Aung San Suu Kyi And The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
Different people make the world go round Human clones may make an exceptional story line for a
mainstream science fiction movie. However if we all were clones, our world would lack the
diversity it thrives on. We would be stuck in a humdrum cycle without the diversity others bring.
Barbara Johnson expresses acceptance of diversity by saying "We, as human beings, must be willing
to accept people who are different from ourselves." Discrimination, acceptance and tolerance toward
diverse people are values that today's society's struggles with the most. "American Flag stands for

Allowing people to flourish by their own means gives them the power to dictate their own beliefs.
Whatever these beliefs may be we must learn to accept them through ways presented in Aung San
Suu Kyi's speech in order to avoid disarray. She states "the only way out of an impasse of hate ,
bloodshed and social and economic chaos credited by men is for those men to get together to find a
peaceful solution"( Suu Kyi CR 12). The answer to peace and acceptance is within the place it was
loss, ourselves. We have to change our instinct to judge people to an instinct of acceptance. Society
must make this change through interaction and conversation, ways brought up in Suu Kyi's speech,
with one another to ultimately understand and accept people different from ourselves. In order for
society to accept people unlike ourselves, we must learn to have tolerance for their views. Emphasis
on differing views and the importance of tolerating them is shown when Ronald J. Allen wrote "with
controversy comes debate, enlightenment, and renewed commitment" (Allen 20). Tolerating
contrasting ideas to our own brings new arguments and

on contradictory views opens society up to learn and continue to grow from one another. Without

Fighting for Equality and Freedom Essays
Across all nations and cultures, the enduring pursuit of equality in life seems global and timeless.
Some would believe that their own country has achieved a true democracy with no residual
inequalities of which to speak, while others know they are at the other end of the spectrum, enduring
unjust laws that should not be bestowed on any human. Through the course of history many
countries have fought for that democracy and all the equality that it implies. While some believe
they have reached that goal, others continue to fight for the most basic human rights, even in this
time of enlightenment. The journey each country takes on its road to that place may vary by
origination, length, severity and outcome, but the goal seems to be the ... Show more content on

In more recent history, King reminds readers of the fundamental values that the United States were
built on as written in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, showing once again that
equality was the intention of the forefathers from the beginning. His vivid examples of the daily
injustices still endured by the Negro society despite written law against such behaviors put a visual
image to the term "injustice" that could not be ignored. In one example, King writes, "your speech
stammering as you seek to explain to your six year old daughter why she can't go to the public
amusement park...and you see tears welling up in her little eyes when she is told that Funtown is
closed to colored children," appealing to all people on a different level – that of a mother or father,
instead of black or white (177). While imprisoned by an unjust law for leading a peaceful
demonstration, a blatant violation of his First Amendment right, King's thoughtful and thorough
response to the eight clergymen's letter conveyed patience and love while steadfastly demanding
equality long overdue. Although decades after King, Aung San Suu Kyi's agenda was basically the
same; however, her attempts to gain general equality in a democracy for all citizens of Burma have
not been as successful. The excerpt "From In Quest of Democracy" seems a more formal approach
seeking to remind both the junta in charge and the ordinary citizens of the goodness, compassion,

Suu Kyi 's Story Is One That Will Never Be Forgotten
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma is a country located in South– East Asia. It is here, from the
years 1962 onwards, that we have used as our example of a breach of humans rights, as a
government abuses its power and brings a country to ashes, and how one individual has made an
astounding impact to change the lives of those affected for the better. Aung San Suu Kyi's story is
one that will never be forgotten. This is a woman, who sacrificed her freedom, for the country
Burma's rights for a non–violent democratic government. And so the story goes.
In Burma, 1962, a dictator, U Ne Win, carried out a coup d'état, or an "overtake", of the ruling

When she returned she found widespread slaughter of protestors rallying against the brutal dictator
U Ne Win. Outraged by this violence she spoke out against him and initiated a nonviolent
movement toward achieving democracy and human rights. Soon, her efforts were noticed and in
July 1989 the Junta military government placed Suu Kyi under house arrest and cut off any
communication she might have had with the outside world. The Union military told Suu Kyi that
she would be set free under the conditions that she agreed to leave the country, but she refused to do
so – insisting that she would continue her struggle until the junta released the country to a civilian
government and freed their political prisoners.
This was the first sacrifice Aung San Suu Kyi made for her country. Instead of leaving, and
pretending that Burma's troubles were no longer hers, she stayed. She stayed to make a difference.
For 6 years, she stayed in house arrest.
In 1990 a parliamentary election was held, and the party that Aung San Suu Kyi was associated,
called the National League for Democracy, won with 80% votes in their favour. However, the Junta
military government overruled these results, and 20 years later declared them invalid.
Although she was unable to personally stand up to the government while she was in house arrest,
people all across the globe were beginning to take note of her. Suu Kyi was awarded a human rights
prize, known as the Rafto Prize in 1990.

The Freedom Of Burm Kyi Suu Kyi
"S is for Suu Kyi, fearless voice of Burma" (Cynthia 22). Aung San Suu Kyi has sacrificed a lot for
Burma, or Myanmar, and its people. Suu Kyi has done a lot of fearless things for Myanmar, and its
people, and she proves that you can do pretty much anything you want to in this world, when
fighting for the right cause. Doing what is right, no matter the circumstance has brought Aung San
Suu Kyi to do fearless things. In 1820 Burma was taken under British rule, and in 1886 was
considered part of India thanks to the British (Baderstcher, "Our world: Myanmar"). In 1937, is
when Burma got its official title as Burma, and became its own colony (Baderstcher, "Our world:
Myanmar"; Schraff 1994:84). Suu Kyi 's father, Aung San , ran the "1940 's nationalist movement",
that secured Burma 's freedom, from Britten, and in 1948, Burma got its independence from Britten
( Ashby, Gore Ohrn 1995: 285; Schraff 1994:84). But Suu Kyi 's Father, wasn't there to see that day,
he was assassinated in 1947, "just months" before he was going to be the "leader of the new
independent state", but they still considered him as the "Father of Modern Burma" ( Ashby, Gore

Disadvantages Of Rohingya
Rohingya's are a Muslim ethnic minority group that has lived as an inhabitance in Mayanmar for
centuries, Today more than a million of them lives in the country, most in the western coastal state

which is not recognized by the state. It is one of the poorest states in the country with ghetto– like
camps and a lack of basic service and opportunities due to ongoing violence persecution, hundreds
and thousands of Rohingya have fled to neighbouring Countries either land or boat over the course
of many decades. Muslim have lived in the area now known as Myanmar since as early as the 12th

organization has said Rohingya have been living in Arakan from time immemorial referring to the
area known as Rakhine. After independence the government viewed the migration that look place
during British rule as illegal , and it is on this basis that they refuse citizenship to the majority of
Rohingya. This has led many Buddhists to consider the Rohingya to be Bengali, rejecting the term
Rohingya as a recent invention, created for
Political reasons. In 2010, when the military leaders released pro – democracy leader of Mayanmar

of desperate Rohingya people are fleeing a vicious military purage in Myanmar. Troops have burned
scores of villages, beheading men raping women, and even killing children. In some place, Buddhist
militias and people have joined in the attacks against the Muslim majority Rohingya. The Myanmar
army and government call their assault a counterterrorist operation, but the U,N, has labeled it a text

Democracy Was Not Suitable For Burma
From 1948 – 1962, the country existed as a democratic republic, but was largely dysfunctional as
there were continued insurgencies by different ethnic and political factions, such as the Red Flag
Communists, the White Flag Communists, the Thirty Comrades, the Revolutionary Burma Army,
and the Karen National Union. In 1962 General Ne Win and the Revolutionary Council led a
military Junta that seized control of the Government. They deposed of Prime Minister U Nu and
openly declared that "Parliamentary democracy was not suitable for Burma." (Hoare 2015) The
highly superstitious and oppressive leadership of Ne Win can be observed in what was labeled The
Burmese Path to Socialism – a guiding ethos to the government of the time that was largely
oppressive. The key tenants to this path included a totalitarian military rule, which gave no freedoms
to its people. Like many other communist dictatorships, it embraced an attitude of authoritarian
socialism, anti–western sentiment, and anti–intellectual fervor. In Beyond Rangoon we bear witness
to the story of Aung Ko, a University Professor who was fired for housing student protestors,
despite not being involved in any other way. (Boorman 1995) Anti–intellectualism is a key for
oppressive regimes to retain power, as they must succeed in silencing all criticism and dissent. More
than just being anti–western, the country adopted a militant Burmese nationalism that led to a
xenophobic exclusion of "the other." This, some ways, was a relic

Oppresship In Frederick Douglass
Paulo Freire once said, "No one can be authentically human while he prevents others from being
so." To me this quote means that no one can call themselves human while dehumanizing others. The
Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass takes us on Douglass' journey
growing up during slavery. His story shows us the forms of oppression he was faced with, like the
violence not only he had to endure but also witness. Similarly the Myanmar: Who are the Rohingya?
By Al Jazeera Staff discusses how this group of people are being displaced and targeted by violence.
This violence and displacement is the main form of oppression the Rohingya people have to deal
with and fight against. Both Frederick Douglass and the Staff of The New York Time and Al Jazeera
argue that oppression is perpetuated by violence and power. However, Frederick Douglass argues
oppression is overcome by education, while the Al Jazeera and The New York Times say that
oppression is overcome by Aung San Suu Kyi fighting for over 1 million rohingyan people's rights.
Both Frederick Douglass and the Al Jazeera Staff argue that oppression is perpetuated through
violence and power. An example of this violence and power is in The narrative of the life of
Frederick Douglass, he takes us on his own real life experiences coming face to face with this
violence since he was a slave. Douglass says "Whom he used to tie up to a joist, and whip upon her
naked back till she was literally covered with blood." This shows exactly how the oppression of
slaves was perpetuated, making slaves so scared by abusing them and treating them less than human
so they would not fight back. Another example of oppression being perpetuated through violence
and power can be found in Myanmar: Who are the Rohingya? This article discusses the
displacement of this "ethnic group" and not only the violence they also experience, but how difficult
their lives are for being who they are. The author says, "During such crackdowns, refugees have
often reported rape, torture, arson, and murder by Myanmar security forces. " The phrase "reported
rape, torture, arson, and murder by Myanmar security forces" shows exactly how violence and
power is being used against the Rohingya

On 4 September, the UN said its aid agencies had been blocked from supplying life–saving supplies

background to the story? For decades ethnic tensions have simmered in Rakhine state, with frequent
outbreaks of violence. In October 2016 nine police officers were killed by armed men, believed by

Common Themes in Speeches by Passionate Leaders
An effective and enthralling speech does not only relate to the content or context, but to the
appropriate utilisation of rhetorical techniques and structure that contest universal requisite ideas,
past, present and future that captivate and engage audiences. Since the beginning of time, society
has been presented with inspirational and passionate leaders who deliver speeches that remain
invaluable due to their themes regarding peace, security, prejudice, equality and basic human rights.
These themes are explored in Anwar Sadat's, Aung San Suu Kyi and Faith Bandlers unique speeches
"Statement to the Knesset" (1977), "Keynote Address at the Beijing World Conference on Women"
(1995) and "Hope, Faith and Reconciliation" (1999) which allow the memory of the past and a
reminder of who we are today.
Continuous battles and terrorism between Israel and Egypt had been occurring four years preceding
to Anwar Sadat's "Statement to the Knesset" (1977). Anwar Sadat, the Prime Minister of Egypt,
address to the Israeli Knesset was presented to an audience which involved both parties and persons
who supported and resented him. Sadat draws upon religious, political and personal values to
motivate and propose to the Israeli Knesset a solution for peace to the extremity of an age long

Healthcare Should Be Suu Kyi 's First Priority For...
Introduction Than Aung is the current minister for the Ministry of Health in Burma. Than Aung is
fairly new to this job; he assumed office 1 August 2014. Than Aung is preceded by Pe Thet Khin
who was the minister from March 2011– July 2014. Before Aung became minister, he was the
Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Health in Burma. He was also a member of the Naypidaw
Council and was the Director of the Myanmar Army Medical Corps. Having such a successful
career so far, his opinion is taken very seriously with issues of healthcare.
Topic 1: The Platform of Aung San Suu Kyi
Aung San Suu Kyi states, "If suffering were an unavoidable part of our existence, we should try to
alleviate it as far as possible in practical, earthly ways." Healthcare should be Suu Kyi's first priority
for reforming Burma. Burmese citizens, namely children, are not getting the healthcare that they
deserve. Although Burma is striving for universal healthcare, the amount of money allotted is not
enough for people to get the proper care that they need. As of 2014, Burma allotted approximately
$USD18 per capita while the regional average of south–east Asia was approximately $USD70 per
capita. Burma needs to budget more money for healthcare. The mortality rate of children under the
age of five in Burma is 9.3% higher than the global average, and children are not the only place
where issues arise. Almost 1 in 4 Burmese citizens between 30–70 die from a noncommunicable
disease (NCD) of either a cancer,

Aung San Suu Kyi Essay Questions
Question No. 1 Answer:
The movie is remarkable story of Aung San Suu Kyi (Michelle Yeoh) and her husband, Michael Aris
(David Thewlis). It is likewise the story of the peaceful mission of the woman who is at the center
of Burma's democracy movement. Notwithstanding separation, long separations, and a hazardously
threatening administration, their affection perseveres until the very end. In 1947, when Aung San
Suu Kyi is two years of age, her father Aung San drives Burma to independence. Be that as it may,
soon subsequently, on 19 July 1947, he alongside a gathering of his partners is killed by a gathering
of armed men in uniform. As a grown–up Suu Kyi goes to England, discovers an adoring husband,
and has an upbeat family life. Yet, in 1988 her mom's weakness compels her to come back to Burma
where her father, Aung San, is still generally recollected. Movie synopsis likewise uncovers that in

Suu's vicinity causes distress for the heartless, distrustful and superstitious officers who standard the
nation. They might want to be freed of her; however her unmistakable quality, her global
associations and the hesitance to make another saint like Aung San keep them from utilizing the
standard fierce routines. Rather, Suu is welcome to leave the nation and afterward, when she won't,
is set under a house arrest that will extend, in different structures, more than two decades. Moreover
when she visits her mom in the healing center in 1988, she meets a large portion of the individuals
who were injured amid the Tatmadaw's crackdown in the 8888 Uprising. She understands that
political change is required in Burma and is soon attracted into the movement to advance change.
She acknowledges the part of symbol in backing of self–determination by the Burmese individuals

Aung San Suu Kyi influenced the people of Myanmar or Burma, which is East of India. The People
of Myanmar were influenced by her because she spoke up against the harsh rule of dictator U Ne
Win without using violent actions. Suu Kyi became the General Secretary of a new democratic party
called "National League of Democracy (NLD)." This position helped Suu Kyi speak up against U
Ne Win because of her political power. Being the daughter of someone who influenced Myanmar,
former Commander of the Burma (Myanmar) Independence Army, Aung San, she has gained much

Also known as "The Lady" as she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991; also an outstanding example
of the power of the powerless. Suu Kyi spent her time between 1989–2010 in some sort of detention
because of her efforts to bring democracy to the military which ruled Myanmar. This made her an
international symbol of peaceful resistance in the face of cruelty. She didn't use violent actions to
accomplish her goals which is one of the reasons why she is a great example to many people. Suu
Kyi spoke out to help many people who don't have rights; and also to achieve democracy for
Myanmar, her hometown. Aung San Suu Kyi still today, is fighting for democracy and human rights
because she believes in human rights and will always help and fight for these things. Aung San Suu

U.S. Military Regime And Its Policies

  • 1. U.s. Military Regime And Its Policies Since General Ne Win's seizure of power in 1962, the military regime controlling Myanmar has called itself many things. Throughout the 1960s to 80s, it was the Burmese Socialist Programme Party; during the late 80s to 90s, it was State Peace and Development Council; and in the present day they're known as the State Law and Order Restoration Council. Though each of these different names represent a different era of Burmese military control, with different policies and different political dynamics, one thing is for certain: no matter the name, figurative political head, or purported change in objectives, the military regime is still firmly entrenched into the country's political workings – and they wish to keep it this way. As the Burmese people look to the future, this is the biggest and most obvious obstacle standing in the way of progress. There is much debate and discussion amongst the international community and within Myanmar itself as to how the Burmese should move forward, but it is unanimous that the problem lies fundamentally with the military regime and its policies. Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy seek to solve this problem through the ousting of the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC). She chooses to do this not through an insurgency–lead coup d'etat or mass uprising, but rather through political maneuvership that promotes democratization (i.e. meaningful citizen representation in parliament), constitutional reforms, and ... Burm AAnd Strong People Leigh Lyter October 22, 2016 Period 1 Myanmar Research Paper In 1989 the country formerly known as Burma switched its name to Myanmar, meaning the "fast and strong people". Burma or Myanmar, began as individual states with several powerful monarchs, over time the British government took over. This resulted in the First Anglo–Burmese War that lasted from 1824–1826. The British went on to win the war and separate Myanmar into separate colonies in favor of certain ethnicities. Burma gained its independence when a group called the "Thirty Comrades" created the Burmese Independence Army and fought with Japan in World War II. The Army believed that if Japan won then they would grant their country freedom, however when Japan began to weaken the group immediately informed the British Military and agreed to help the British win the war. Aung San was the leader of Burma at the time, and he establish the Burmese Independence Army and later went on to see Burma separate from Britain, however when he assumed the position of leader of his new country he and his cabinet members were assassinated by an opposition group. Aung San Suu Kyi's father, Aung San, was a student, devoted in fighting for independence from the British. Britain seized Burma and abolished the monarchy. • 5. Argumentative Essay On Rohingya Described as the world's most persecuted people, 1.1 million Rohingya people live in Myanmar. They live predominately in Rakhine state, where they have co–existed uneasily alongside Buddhists for decades.Rohingya people say they are descendants of Muslims, perhaps Persian and Arab traders, who came to Myanmar generations ago. Unlike the Buddhist community, they speak a language similar to the Bengali dialect of Chittagong in Bangladesh. The Rohingya are reviled by many in Myanmar as illegal immigrants and they suffer from systematic discrimination. The Myanmar government treats them as stateless people, denying them citizenship. Stringent restrictions have been placed on Rohingya people's freedom of movement, access to medical assistance, education and other basic services. Violence broke out in northern Rakhine state on 25 August, when militants attacked government forces. In response, security forces supported by Buddhist military launched a "clearance operation". Refugees have spoken of massacres in villages, where they say soldiers raided and burned their homes. The government claims the Rohingya have burned their own homes and killed Buddhists and Hindus. It says that the military is targeting terrorists, including the Arakan RohingyaSalvation Army (Arsa), the group that claimed responsibility for the August attacks. They have been stricken with World War, independence struggles, as well as military dictatorship. The Burmese groups have tried with diligence to establish their own states, but in the end all has fallen upon them and their tale is one of grief and sadness. Promises of liberation were made by Japan but after a few years, it was clear that Japan did not wish for Burmese autonomy. Recognizing this fact, Aung San hurried quickly to negotiate a deal with the British. He convinced the British to give them their national freedom if they were to fight the Japanese on behalf of the British. The allied powers won and Britain started the process of halting its operations in Burma. Aung San was hailed for his achievement of independence from Britain though the future of Burma was not to be so lucky. Even though he was seen as a controversial figure due to his communist politics, he was able to unite the minority groups of Burma and secure the writing of a constitution, agreeing to officially end British control. In July of 1947, a year before the official "independence" of Burma, Aung San and most of his cabinet were sadly murdered by an enemy party (Badertscher). South Suu Kyi 's Freedom From Fear Speech Freedom, democracy and human rights were the ideals that Burma is lacking under the reign of the military junta led by Ne Win and his Socialist Party for fifty years. The socialist ideals have only brought fear and poverty to the people of Burma and the protests against the military government were always brutally suppressed. Aung San Suu Kyi, daughter of the national hero, General Aung San who was assassinated by his rival after he fought for Burmese independence from England, was filled with the ideals that her father fought for and became a leader for the people to unite them and challenge the right to rule of the people in power. The speech reflected Suu Kyi's vision of Burma as a peaceful country and her courage which she did use it in her favor to rouse the people who have long waited for a change. The purpose of the speech was to made the people see a future Burma with a democratically elected government that respects human rights and to take effective actions against the government through non–violent confrontations. In Freedom from Fear speech, Suu Kyi begins by speaking the truth of how fear corrupts all those wielding power and those that are being controlled. As Burma is under the oppressive regime, she claimed that people may not be able to fight back with arms, but what they can do is to get rid of fear from their minds, and embrace courage to bear a real revolution which can only be succeeded if it is born of conviction that a change is desperately needed. Truth, justice and compassion are the only barriers that can stand up against the government as a government that is established with force and concern with only short term profits can never give the country the whole democracy and human rights. Freedom from fear is the utmost importance in politics and personal life as it is the start of a system that can help realize the declaration of human rights and democracy. Atwood argues that the depiction of women in literature ironically prevents women's advancement, similarly Aung San Suu Kyo argues that the depiction of women in their traditional roles of carers and nurturers has prevented their advancement in politics. Atwood employs polyvocality to shift from complex arguments to the seemingly simplistic anecdote of the eternal breakfast. Her literary knowledge and wit allows her to embody her message and complex ideas to convey that she as a woman is complex. The speeches timelessness and treatment of universal concerns through the construction of rhetoric support her argument and captivate the attention of past and present audiences. In 'Keynote', the composer effectively constructs rhetoric to addresses the universal issue of gender inequality to satisfactorily call for social reform. Suu Kyi was a recognised activist for women's right and was leader of the democracy movement in Burma. Unfamiliar cultures/language: Although both Heineken and Carlsberg are considered foreign multinational companies, there are still differences in corporate governance and culture between the two firms, which might create barriers for a successful partnership. Moreover, the difference in culture between the two local JV company (Alliance Brewery Company and Golden Star Group) will make the alliance more complicated. The difference in language used for these 4 parties (English or Dutch for Heineken, Danish/English for Carlsberg, and Burmese for Alliance Brewery Company and Golden Star Group) will create additional trust barrier during the negotiation process. Organizational: 1. Personnel turnover: As Carlsberg already has a Bago plant located in the targeted expansion regions , having a partnership with Carlsberg means the employment of the Carlsberg employees in the Bago plant might be affected, as Heineken might want to put their own management/workers in the plant based on the new ownership structure. It is not sure whether the Bago plant management and workers will trust the new owner. Option 2: Organic growth

General Saw Maung abolished the 1974 constitution and established the "State Law and Order Restoration Council(SLORC)". However, in 1997, the SLORC was broken down and changed to the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) which continued to rule until 2010 by General Than Shwe. National League for Democracy (NLD) party was one of the notable political parties in 1988 and 1989. It was led by Aung San Suu Kyi. Since she was very popular like today, the SLORC put her under house arrest in July 1989 (Background Information). The government made her remain under house arrest in Rangoon for six years. However if we all were clones, our world would lack the diversity it thrives on. We would be stuck in a humdrum cycle without the diversity others bring. Barbara Johnson expresses acceptance of diversity by saying "We, as human beings, must be willing to accept people who are different from ourselves." Discrimination, acceptance and tolerance toward diverse people are values that today's society's struggles with the most. "American Flag stands for Tolerance" newspaper editorial by Ronald J. Allowing people to flourish by their own means gives them the power to dictate their own beliefs. Whatever these beliefs may be we must learn to accept them through ways presented in Aung San Suu Kyi's speech in order to avoid disarray. She states "the only way out of an impasse of hate , bloodshed and social and economic chaos credited by men is for those men to get together to find a peaceful solution"( Suu Kyi CR 12). The answer to peace and acceptance is within the place it was loss, ourselves. We have to change our instinct to judge people to an instinct of acceptance. Society must make this change through interaction and conversation, ways brought up in Suu Kyi's speech, with one another to ultimately understand and accept people different from ourselves. In order for society to accept people unlike ourselves, we must learn to have tolerance for their views. Emphasis on differing views and the importance of tolerating them is shown when Ronald J. Allen wrote "with controversy comes debate, enlightenment, and renewed commitment" (Allen 20). Tolerating contrasting ideas to our own brings new arguments and Sears 3 points to the surface that would have otherwise been left unaddressed. Some would believe that their own country has achieved a true democracy with no residual inequalities of which to speak, while others know they are at the other end of the spectrum, enduring unjust laws that should not be bestowed on any human. Through the course of history many countries have fought for that democracy and all the equality that it implies. While some believe they have reached that goal, others continue to fight for the most basic human rights, even in this time of enlightenment. The journey each country takes on its road to that place may vary by origination, length, severity and outcome, but the goal seems to be the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In more recent history, King reminds readers of the fundamental values that the United States were built on as written in the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, showing once again that equality was the intention of the forefathers from the beginning. His vivid examples of the daily injustices still endured by the Negro society despite written law against such behaviors put a visual image to the term "injustice" that could not be ignored. In one example, King writes, "your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six year old daughter why she can't go to the public amusement park...and you see tears welling up in her little eyes when she is told that Funtown is closed to colored children," appealing to all people on a different level – that of a mother or father, instead of black or white (177). While imprisoned by an unjust law for leading a peaceful demonstration, a blatant violation of his First Amendment right, King's thoughtful and thorough response to the eight clergymen's letter conveyed patience and love while steadfastly demanding equality long overdue. Although decades after King, Aung San Suu Kyi's agenda was basically the same; however, her attempts to gain general equality in a democracy for all citizens of Burma have not been as successful. It is here, from the years 1962 onwards, that we have used as our example of a breach of humans rights, as a government abuses its power and brings a country to ashes, and how one individual has made an astounding impact to change the lives of those affected for the better. Aung San Suu Kyi's story is one that will never be forgotten. This is a woman, who sacrificed her freedom, for the country Burma's rights for a non–violent democratic government. And so the story goes. In Burma, 1962, a dictator, U Ne Win, carried out a coup d'état, or an "overtake", of the ruling government party. When she returned she found widespread slaughter of protestors rallying against the brutal dictator U Ne Win. Outraged by this violence she spoke out against him and initiated a nonviolent movement toward achieving democracy and human rights. Soon, her efforts were noticed and in July 1989 the Junta military government placed Suu Kyi under house arrest and cut off any communication she might have had with the outside world. The Union military told Suu Kyi that she would be set free under the conditions that she agreed to leave the country, but she refused to do so – insisting that she would continue her struggle until the junta released the country to a civilian government and freed their political prisoners. This was the first sacrifice Aung San Suu Kyi made for her country. Instead of leaving, and pretending that Burma's troubles were no longer hers, she stayed. She stayed to make a difference. For 6 years, she stayed in house arrest. In 1990 a parliamentary election was held, and the party that Aung San Suu Kyi was associated, called the National League for Democracy, won with 80% votes in their favour. However, the Junta military government overruled these results, and 20 years later declared them invalid. Although she was unable to personally stand up to the government while she was in house arrest, people all across the globe were beginning to take note of her. • 31. The Freedom Of Burm Kyi Suu Kyi "S is for Suu Kyi, fearless voice of Burma" (Cynthia 22). Aung San Suu Kyi has sacrificed a lot for Burma, or Myanmar, and its people. Suu Kyi has done a lot of fearless things for Myanmar, and its people, and she proves that you can do pretty much anything you want to in this world, when fighting for the right cause. Doing what is right, no matter the circumstance has brought Aung San Suu Kyi to do fearless things. In 1820 Burma was taken under British rule, and in 1886 was considered part of India thanks to the British (Baderstcher, "Our world: Myanmar"). In 1937, is when Burma got its official title as Burma, and became its own colony (Baderstcher, "Our world: Myanmar"; Schraff 1994:84). Suu Kyi 's father, Aung San , ran the "1940 's nationalist movement", that secured Burma 's freedom, from Britten, and in 1948, Burma got its independence from Britten ( Ashby, Gore Ohrn 1995: 285; Schraff 1994:84). But Suu Kyi 's Father, wasn't there to see that day, he was assassinated in 1947, "just months" before he was going to be the "leader of the new independent state", but they still considered him as the "Father of Modern Burma" ( Ashby, Gore Ohrn 1995: 285; Victor 1998: 8). Aung San Suu Kyi was just 2 years old, when he was assassinated (Schraff 1994:84). After independence the government viewed the migration that look place during British rule as illegal , and it is on this basis that they refuse citizenship to the majority of Rohingya. This has led many Buddhists to consider the Rohingya to be Bengali, rejecting the term Rohingya as a recent invention, created for Political reasons. In 2010, when the military leaders released pro – democracy leader of Mayanmar Ayng San Suu Kyi from house arrest, Most of the political leaders thought Burma was beginning to change for the better. When they demanded citizenship they also asked for the state that had been promised to them. Ultimately the army crushed the resistance movement. • 34. Democracy Was Not Suitable For Burma From 1948 – 1962, the country existed as a democratic republic, but was largely dysfunctional as there were continued insurgencies by different ethnic and political factions, such as the Red Flag Communists, the White Flag Communists, the Thirty Comrades, the Revolutionary Burma Army, and the Karen National Union. In 1962 General Ne Win and the Revolutionary Council led a military Junta that seized control of the Government. They deposed of Prime Minister U Nu and openly declared that "Parliamentary democracy was not suitable for Burma." (Hoare 2015) The highly superstitious and oppressive leadership of Ne Win can be observed in what was labeled The Burmese Path to Socialism – a guiding ethos to the government of the time that was largely oppressive. The key tenants to this path included a totalitarian military rule, which gave no freedoms to its people. Like many other communist dictatorships, it embraced an attitude of authoritarian socialism, anti–western sentiment, and anti–intellectual fervor. In Beyond Rangoon we bear witness to the story of Aung Ko, a University Professor who was fired for housing student protestors, despite not being involved in any other way. (Boorman 1995) Anti–intellectualism is a key for oppressive regimes to retain power, as they must succeed in silencing all criticism and dissent. More than just being anti–western, the country adopted a militant Burmese nationalism that led to a xenophobic exclusion of "the other." This, some ways, was a relic ... • 35. Oppresship In Frederick Douglass Paulo Freire once said, "No one can be authentically human while he prevents others from being so." To me this quote means that no one can call themselves human while dehumanizing others. The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass takes us on Douglass' journey growing up during slavery. His story shows us the forms of oppression he was faced with, like the violence not only he had to endure but also witness. Similarly the Myanmar: Who are the Rohingya? By Al Jazeera Staff discusses how this group of people are being displaced and targeted by violence. This violence and displacement is the main form of oppression the Rohingya people have to deal with and fight against. Both Frederick Douglass and the Staff of The New York Time and Al Jazeera argue that oppression is perpetuated by violence and power. However, Frederick Douglass argues oppression is overcome by education, while the Al Jazeera and The New York Times say that oppression is overcome by Aung San Suu Kyi fighting for over 1 million rohingyan people's rights. Both Frederick Douglass and the Al Jazeera Staff argue that oppression is perpetuated through violence and power. An example of this violence and power is in The narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, he takes us on his own real life experiences coming face to face with this violence since he was a slave. Douglass says "Whom he used to tie up to a joist, and whip upon her naked back till she was literally covered with blood." This shows exactly how the oppression of slaves was perpetuated, making slaves so scared by abusing them and treating them less than human so they would not fight back. Another example of oppression being perpetuated through violence and power can be found in Myanmar: Who are the Rohingya? This article discusses the displacement of this "ethnic group" and not only the violence they also experience, but how difficult their lives are for being who they are. The author says, "During such crackdowns, refugees have often reported rape, torture, arson, and murder by Myanmar security forces. Common Themes in Speeches by Passionate Leaders An effective and enthralling speech does not only relate to the content or context, but to the appropriate utilisation of rhetorical techniques and structure that contest universal requisite ideas, past, present and future that captivate and engage audiences. Since the beginning of time, society has been presented with inspirational and passionate leaders who deliver speeches that remain invaluable due to their themes regarding peace, security, prejudice, equality and basic human rights. These themes are explored in Anwar Sadat's, Aung San Suu Kyi and Faith Bandlers unique speeches "Statement to the Knesset" (1977), "Keynote Address at the Beijing World Conference on Women" (1995) and "Hope, Faith and Reconciliation" (1999) which allow the memory of the past and a reminder of who we are today.
