Personal skills and knowledge gained as a result of course
undertaking
New practice approaches that I have learned
There are three new nursing practices approach that I have been
able to achieve in the nursing course. The first one is the use of
economical staffing models and simple electronic applications
as a way of educating primary care givers and patients on the
conditions that they have. The second one is the use of
psychological methodologies and techniques to help in patient
care and nursing. As much as patients might have ailments the
first battle that should be won to ensure that they are effectively
treated is dealing with their mental state; if the mind battle is
won, half the medical battle is already won (Townsend &
Morgan, 2017). The third approach is the use of evidence based
nursing. The approach combines personal clinical expertise and
the most relevant and current research available when it comes
to patient care.
Knowledge acquired on intra-professional collaboration
In almost all professions, the only way to better the profession
is through intra-professional collaboration and nursing is not an
exception of this. In my undertaking of this course, I have
learned that we need other people to achieve more so people
who are in the same profession as you are. There are people
who are more knowledgeable than others in certain fields and
having interactions and collaborations with such people can
better those who are less knowledgeable. Intra-professional
collaboration is important as it aids in the sharing of vital
information. In my path to become a nurse, I have learnt to seek
the advice of those superior to me as their advice always betters
me. For example, by interacting with experienced RN I get to
know of the best nursing practices that will ensure that I
administer quality and meaningful patient care to my patients.
Knowledge acquired on clinical and Health care delivery system
Most hospitals and healthcare care centers have procedures or
steps of carrying out medical treatments or healthcare delivery.
The success of healthcare delivery is fully dependent on the
procedures and the steps that the centers prescribe to. In my
interactions with various health care and delivery systems
throughout my course, I have learned that it is completely
necessary to stick to the laid down procedures in healthcare
centers as the procedures play a vital role in how healthcare is
delivered. The systems are in place to guide medical procedures
as well as patient care provision. I have also acquired the
knowledge that clinical and health care delivery systems dictate
the chain of commands in medical situations. For example, lead
physicians dictate the kind of patient care that should be
administered to a patient and all that is captured in the clinical
and healthcare delivery systems. Furthermore, I have also learnt
that the systems do not consist only of computerized systems
but they also consist of human capital.
Ethical considerations learnt in the course
Throughout this course, I have acquired knowledge of ethical
considerations in the medical sector that I initially did not have.
There are six ethical principles that I have learnt and the first
principle is on autonomy; at all times, the wishes of patients
should be respected even if I do not agree with them. The
second principle is on justice; all patients should be treated
equally and fairly regardless of their gender, race and social
status. The third principle is on beneficence; nurses should have
compassion at all times and should always take positive actions
to better the conditions of the patients.
The fourth principle is on nonmaleficence; nurses should always
be competent in their field and should not by shy of stating or
reporting any abuse of misdeeds in their field (Runciman, Merry
& Walton, 2017). The fifth principle is that nurses should at all
times be guided by the virtue of caring. The last ethical
principle that I have learned while undertaking this course is on
integrity and totality; nurses should always consider the entire
patient when deciding on the best therapies and medications for
a patient.
Knowledge acquired on population health concerns
In my undertaking of the nursing course, I have come to learn
that it is the primary goal of nurses to improve the health of a
certain population. It is not only the duty to ensure that health
populations get relevant and efficient patient care when in
hospitals and health centers but it is also the duty of nurses to
ensure that communities are aware of the best health practices.
If communities are aware and practice the best health care
practices then the general health of that community or that
population will improve and as a result, people will only visit
hospitals and healthcare centers to get treatment and care on
complex health conditions.
Knowledge acquired on the role of technology in improving
healthcare
Advancements in technology generally have brought many
benefits to all sectors of life and the health sector has not been
left behind. At the moment there are superior chemotherapy and
radiotherapy technologies that are in use compared to ten years
ago and this is as a result of advancements in technology. In my
learning, I have acquired that technology helps in the
administering of healthcare. It is easier for nurses to monitor
patients in their centers than before because of advanced
monitoring technology (Jensen et al., 2015). I have also learnt
that technology helps in the delivery of precise healthcare as
technology makes carrying out medical procedures easier and
faster. I have learnt that technology plays a major role in
improving outcomes in health and for that reason accepted that
technology should not be shunned away from the medical
sector.
Health policy knowledge acquired
Throughout my learning, I have come to learn that the medical
sector is governed by strict laws and policies. The policies and
laws are in place not only to protect the interests of the patients
but also to protect the interests of the nurses and centers that
they work for (Brener & Demissie, 2018). A policy that I did
not know that existed before I started the course was that nurses
and other medical practitioners are under the law to protect the
health information of patients not only from other patients but
also from unauthorized healthcare professionals. Failure to do
so or comply with policies and health laws can land a nurse in
hot soup; they can lose their practicing licenses and they can
face law suits.
Economic models and leadership knowledge and skills acquired
Before I enrolled for this course, I always believed that the only
responsibility or duty of a nurse was to offer patient care. I,
however, came to learn that that is not entirely the case. Nurses
have leadership roles and responsibilities as well as economic
duties. Throughout my undertaking of the course, I have come
to learn that nursing leadership styles can impact and influence
patient outcomes as well as organizational performance. The
success of a nurse is pegged on their leadership skills and
organizational performance is pegged on the services that
nurses offer.
Knowledge acquired on health disparities
For a long time, I had always believed that all Americans have
access and receive equal health care; however, that notion was
done away with when I started this course. There is a health
care provision disparity; the less fortunate members of the
society do not get equal health treatment to the more fortunate
members of the society as much as healthcare is a basic and a
universal need. The disparity in health care provision is brought
about by the disparity in economic status in the nation and in
the world (Pearcy & Keppel, 2016). The more a person is better
financially the higher the likelihood that they will receive better
healthcare compared to those who are not well off financially.

Running Head NURSING CAPSTONE .docx

  • 1. Running Head: NURSING CAPSTONE 1 NURSING CAPSTONE 2 Student’s name: Professor’s name: Topic: Institution: Date: Personal skills and knowledge gained as a result of course undertaking New practice approaches that I have learned There are three new nursing practices approach that I have been able to achieve in the nursing course. The first one is the use of economical staffing models and simple electronic applications as a way of educating primary care givers and patients on the conditions that they have. The second one is the use of psychological methodologies and techniques to help in patient care and nursing. As much as patients might have ailments the first battle that should be won to ensure that they are effectively treated is dealing with their mental state; if the mind battle is
  • 2. won, half the medical battle is already won (Townsend & Morgan, 2017). The third approach is the use of evidence based nursing. The approach combines personal clinical expertise and the most relevant and current research available when it comes to patient care. Knowledge acquired on intra-professional collaboration In almost all professions, the only way to better the profession is through intra-professional collaboration and nursing is not an exception of this. In my undertaking of this course, I have learned that we need other people to achieve more so people who are in the same profession as you are. There are people who are more knowledgeable than others in certain fields and having interactions and collaborations with such people can better those who are less knowledgeable. Intra-professional collaboration is important as it aids in the sharing of vital information. In my path to become a nurse, I have learnt to seek the advice of those superior to me as their advice always betters me. For example, by interacting with experienced RN I get to know of the best nursing practices that will ensure that I administer quality and meaningful patient care to my patients. Knowledge acquired on clinical and Health care delivery system Most hospitals and healthcare care centers have procedures or steps of carrying out medical treatments or healthcare delivery. The success of healthcare delivery is fully dependent on the procedures and the steps that the centers prescribe to. In my interactions with various health care and delivery systems throughout my course, I have learned that it is completely necessary to stick to the laid down procedures in healthcare centers as the procedures play a vital role in how healthcare is delivered. The systems are in place to guide medical procedures as well as patient care provision. I have also acquired the knowledge that clinical and health care delivery systems dictate the chain of commands in medical situations. For example, lead physicians dictate the kind of patient care that should be administered to a patient and all that is captured in the clinical and healthcare delivery systems. Furthermore, I have also learnt
  • 3. that the systems do not consist only of computerized systems but they also consist of human capital. Ethical considerations learnt in the course Throughout this course, I have acquired knowledge of ethical considerations in the medical sector that I initially did not have. There are six ethical principles that I have learnt and the first principle is on autonomy; at all times, the wishes of patients should be respected even if I do not agree with them. The second principle is on justice; all patients should be treated equally and fairly regardless of their gender, race and social status. The third principle is on beneficence; nurses should have compassion at all times and should always take positive actions to better the conditions of the patients. The fourth principle is on nonmaleficence; nurses should always be competent in their field and should not by shy of stating or reporting any abuse of misdeeds in their field (Runciman, Merry & Walton, 2017). The fifth principle is that nurses should at all times be guided by the virtue of caring. The last ethical principle that I have learned while undertaking this course is on integrity and totality; nurses should always consider the entire patient when deciding on the best therapies and medications for a patient. Knowledge acquired on population health concerns In my undertaking of the nursing course, I have come to learn that it is the primary goal of nurses to improve the health of a certain population. It is not only the duty to ensure that health populations get relevant and efficient patient care when in hospitals and health centers but it is also the duty of nurses to ensure that communities are aware of the best health practices. If communities are aware and practice the best health care practices then the general health of that community or that population will improve and as a result, people will only visit hospitals and healthcare centers to get treatment and care on complex health conditions. Knowledge acquired on the role of technology in improving healthcare
  • 4. Advancements in technology generally have brought many benefits to all sectors of life and the health sector has not been left behind. At the moment there are superior chemotherapy and radiotherapy technologies that are in use compared to ten years ago and this is as a result of advancements in technology. In my learning, I have acquired that technology helps in the administering of healthcare. It is easier for nurses to monitor patients in their centers than before because of advanced monitoring technology (Jensen et al., 2015). I have also learnt that technology helps in the delivery of precise healthcare as technology makes carrying out medical procedures easier and faster. I have learnt that technology plays a major role in improving outcomes in health and for that reason accepted that technology should not be shunned away from the medical sector. Health policy knowledge acquired Throughout my learning, I have come to learn that the medical sector is governed by strict laws and policies. The policies and laws are in place not only to protect the interests of the patients but also to protect the interests of the nurses and centers that they work for (Brener & Demissie, 2018). A policy that I did not know that existed before I started the course was that nurses and other medical practitioners are under the law to protect the health information of patients not only from other patients but also from unauthorized healthcare professionals. Failure to do so or comply with policies and health laws can land a nurse in hot soup; they can lose their practicing licenses and they can face law suits. Economic models and leadership knowledge and skills acquired Before I enrolled for this course, I always believed that the only responsibility or duty of a nurse was to offer patient care. I, however, came to learn that that is not entirely the case. Nurses have leadership roles and responsibilities as well as economic duties. Throughout my undertaking of the course, I have come to learn that nursing leadership styles can impact and influence patient outcomes as well as organizational performance. The
  • 5. success of a nurse is pegged on their leadership skills and organizational performance is pegged on the services that nurses offer. Knowledge acquired on health disparities For a long time, I had always believed that all Americans have access and receive equal health care; however, that notion was done away with when I started this course. There is a health care provision disparity; the less fortunate members of the society do not get equal health treatment to the more fortunate members of the society as much as healthcare is a basic and a universal need. The disparity in health care provision is brought about by the disparity in economic status in the nation and in the world (Pearcy & Keppel, 2016). The more a person is better financially the higher the likelihood that they will receive better healthcare compared to those who are not well off financially. References Brener, N., & Demissie, Z. The second one is the use of

As much as patients might have ailments the first battle that should be won to ensure that they are effectively treated is dealing with their mental state; if the mind battle is won, half the medical battle is already won (Townsend & Morgan, 2017). I have also acquired the knowledge that clinical and health care delivery systems dictate
  • 13. the chain of commands in medical situations. For example, lead physicians dictate the kind of patient care that should be administered to a patient and all that is captured in the clinical and healthcare delivery systems. Furthermore, I have also learnt that the systems do not consist only of computerized systems but they also consist of human capital. If communities are aware and practice the best health care practices then the general health of that community or that population will improve and as a result, people will only visit

Knowledge acquired on the role of technology in improving healthcare Advancements in technology generally have brought many benefits to all sectors of life and the health sector has not been left behind. Nurses
  • 15. have leadership roles and responsibilities as well as economic duties. Throughout my undertaking of the course, I have come to learn that nursing leadership styles can impact and influence patient outcomes as well as organizational performance. The success of a nurse is pegged on their leadership skills and organizational performance is pegged on the services that nurses offer.
