Presentation | Jury 1 - Proposal
Design Brief

Aim of the project:

To design an educational tool-kit,
taking inspiration from the concept
of Shreyas and Preyas from the
Kathupanishad, to teach the kids
how to make choices and hone their
power of discrimination through the
medium of story-telling.
Process | Using SCAMPER Tool
Using the Modify Tool and Substitute
Tool:

So I used the modify tool and the
substitute tool to alter the subject
and modify it’s purpose. I changed
my subject from “kids” to “me” and the
purpose from “to learn how to make
decisions” to “learn how to make
dosa”
so I wrote down how would I make
dosa step by step. By doing so, it
triggered off a basic process, a basic
line of thought.

                                    Learn how to cook dosas           Learn how to make choices

                                    1.   Buy batter                   1.   Take a situation in a story
                                    2.   Add salt                     2.   Identify the dilemma
                                    3.   Leave it                     3.   Identify the easy way out of the situation
                                    4.   Take a spoonful of           4.   The other way would be not the easy way
                                         batter & put it on the pan         out of the situation
                                    5.   Add oil                      5.   Choose the easy way out
                                    6.   Roast it                     6.   Track the events and see where the protagonist ends up
                                    7.   Serve it                     7.   See if the ultimate event is really beneficial to the

While making choices, the kids did
fact and opinion where the character
of the story was in a dilemma to
make a choice. After hearing out
everyone’s opinion - the kids labeled
every opinion to be :
1) Easy way out of the situation
2) Right way out of the situation
 3) Difficult choice (something the
kids came up with themselves)

I have this exercise written down on
paper by the kids for every kid. It also
became a writing exercise for them.

The final ending was modified from Shekhar’s opinion from “becoming
another animal” to “another animal helping Hansika” and that’s when
Prakash had the idea of butterflies as Hansika’s friends and they helping her
at the end. And in this way, Hansika would get her chain and the tiger would
not be harmed.

Why the technique of stop motion
animation?

It is the cost effective, gives scope
for imagination, one need not worry
about location. Finally. It is the most
effective and fun way to tell any kind
of story.
Critique | Reflecting upon the process
•	 The intention was to explore the technique of stop motion animation as a
   fun and engaging way of story telling.

•	 Knowing ‘why‘ you do ‘what‘ you do at the beginning instead of summing
   it up towards the end.

•	 The choice making activity did not seem to have the lasting effect on the
   kids.

•	 Necessary to bring the point of making choices into the childrens lives and
   then assessing how their lives would then be different.

•	 The children should have had some role in the compilation of the final
   animation.
Change in Context | Redesigning the process
•	 Clear intention of facilitating choice making.

•	 Knowing ‘why‘ you do ‘what‘ you do at the beginning instead of summing
   it up towards the end.

•	 The choice making activity did not seem to have the lasting effect on the
   kids.

•	 Necessary to bring the point of making choices into the childrens lives and
   then assessing how their lives would then be different.

•	 The children should have had some role in the compilation of the final
   animation.
