Evaluation q1
1. Evaluation Q1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products.
This shot is 0:02 seconds in to the
Limitless opening sequence
This shot is 0:02 seconds in to my thriller
opening sequence.
You can clearly identify the difference between each shot. As it shows Limitless have already started to show
their credits, whereas, in my product I am showing the flash back scene. This shows how in comparison, I am
already trying to target the audiences attention and have introduced one character, whereas in Limitless they
have only just started to show the production credits. This demonstrates how I want my audience to be attached
to the film from the very start.
This shot is one of the first shots shown
after Limitless’ opening credits. This shot
establishes the first location in which the
audience gets to see.
This shot is about 0:10 seconds into my
opening product. This shot starts the
establish more about the area and the
character present.
Although both shots are at different times, they would be of equal timings if Limitless’ credits were removed.
This is because I need it to be equal (as my sequence doesn’t have opening credits). Even though different
angled shots are used, they both create similar meanings such as letting the audience know more about the
locations used, and this is where the 2 products are similar.
This shot is showing the first sign of
danger / a systematic error within
Limitless’ opening sequence.
This shot introduces a second character, as
it shows 2 characters. This shot gives the
audience an understanding of what is
happening / the characters involved.
2. Even though both shots concern different scenarios, they both intensify the audience with the idea that
something ‘is not quite right’ and is involved with danger. When comparing the shot from my opening
sequence to Limitless’ shot, it shows I have challenged but also used the conventions of real media products.
This is because I have used a convention within this shot of danger and this is a common convention of
thriller genre and thriller genre within real media products.
This scene in Limitless, is the first shot
showing a character to the audience,
although the audience do not get to see the
audiences face.
This shot is about 0:30 seconds into my
opening sequence. This is one of the first
credit scenes.
These scenes (without Limitless opening credits) would be around the same timing. Comparing these two, it
shows how, so far, in just 30 seconds, my sequence is moving a lot faster as it has already introduced 2
characters. Although, the differences would be that Limitless has introduced more than 1 location, and in
comparison to my product, mine has only introduced one (title sequence not counted for).
This scene is the first shot to show/
introduce a character. The audience are
able to make connections of him being a
protagonist (due to him standing on a a
tall building).
These scenes when compared are quite similar; they both show to the audience a main character and a clear
view of the location in which the scene is set (even though each scene has different lighting, it is still clear). The
location in which the characters are shown to be in helps the audience identify each characters situation and
character type.
This scene in my product shows one
character more clearly/in-depth whereas
before, the audience may not of.
3. This shot shows a close up of the
characters feet when stood on the
building. This helps create/extend the idea
of how dangerous it is and this creates
representations for the character such as
being daring/ vulnerable…
This shot shows the characters feet when
just getting out of bed. This shot helps the
audience have an insight on the character
(age/interests) and this is due to the
choice of costume (Minnie mouse
slippers)- doesn’t represent a psycho
antagonist, but a teenage girl who is most
probably the victim.
These two shots are very similar and show how my product uses forms and conventions of real media products.
Both of these shots are able to target the audience. These shots are able to target the audience although my shot
reflects more onto the audiences perspective of character type, limitless reflects on the danger of
location/character.
This scene is of the same character (as
above scene), but shown at a different
angle. A birds eye view is used to show
how high up the building is. A birds eye
view is used for two reasons:
1) Showing the danger the character
is in, (emphasis on the drop).
2) Creating the representation that he
could be the protagonist (heights-
superior).
This scene is also of the same character from
the previous shot (above) but at a different
angle. A close up/ birds eye view shot is
used to allow the audience to truly identify
the character and help the audience allocate
the characters aspects (age, race..).
Both of these shots when in comparison help support the idea that my media product uses but also challenges
forms of real media products. This is because both shots have the same idea (shot positioning/ showing of
characters) but extend that idea in different ways.
4. In this scene, it shows the first scene of
Limitless’ title sequence. This title
sequence is set through a series of tracks
shown to be throughout New York City
cabs.
This scene is the second to last scene with
my sequence before my voiceover ends. This
scene is also second to last before the
audience are introduced to both the
Protagonist and Antagonist.
When comparing these two shots, it’s clear to show the difference between the progress and to show that my
product moves more fast than the real media product: Limitless. Overall, this comparison between my
product and a real media product shows how my product does challenge, use and develop forms and
conventions from real media products. This is because it is clear to show that my product uses similar shot
types that are used in Limitless. Another reason to support the fact that my product challenges the forms and
conventions is due to within the first minute, my product only introduces 1 character but various locations,
whereas challenging against Limitless, in the first minute, the audience are introduced to different locations
and a variety of characters. My product is similar to Limitless in some ways, for example: the shot of the feet,
my product uses the same camera angle and positioning as in Limitless, this shows how my product conforms
to the use of forms/ conventions of real media products.
