This shot shows straight away
what HellBoy is and is allowing
the audience to create
automatic representations of
HellBoy. The representations
which could be created of this
HellBoy character would be
that he is spine-chilling and his
looks associate to his title
name (HELLboy)
This scene shows a man who
makes sure HellBoy is in bed,
shutting a curtain on him. This
creates representations of
HellBoy being so easily hidden
and perceived as of being a
troublesome character which
shouldn’t be known, he is also
being displayed as a kind of
secret and this easily links to
the thriller genre as
undisclosed information is a
main factor throughout many
thriller films and this helps link
to the representations.
This shot shows HellBoy going
to sleep holding a knife. This
shot is important as it creates
a representation of danger
which the audience can clearly
identify, this action links to
HellBoy as a character overall
and helps the audience
understand his mannerisms as
a character.
This this scene shows when
an array of cogs is first
present. These cogs are
shown to be in an in-depth line
and shown as if they are going
“down into hell”. This links to
the title of the thriller film and
the thriller genre as a whole
and evil is a connotation of hell
and evil is a common concept
of thriller films.
This scene and the following show how the cogs/hell like location is
carried on through over 20 different shots. This fact could make the
audience feel tedious about the opening sequence as it is a repeat
of a location which could make it quite boring. The reason in which
these shots are still effective is because the shots are displayed in
so it looks like each cog is removed and then the’ audience’ go
further into ‘hell’. This use of shot techniques makes it more
enthusiastic and entertaining for the audience, which thus enthrals
them more into the film.

2. This scene shows how all the
cogs come together and piece
the title sequence in order for
it to say “HellBoy”. The use of
cogs shows how each cog has
a specific roe into making sure
everything comes together,
this can clearly link to the fact
that all the small pieces of
information in a thriller film
actually come together in the
end in order to create the
resolution.
This shot shows the films main
logo/name. This shot
intertwines the titles of the film
with the introduction as they
both link to hell themes. This
shows intertextuality within the
opening sequence and creates
representations that hell and
purgatory will be present
throughout the whole film.
These representations then
automatically make the
audience think about what the
characters link to the themes
of hell will will.
This is the end of the
opening sequence for
HellBoy. This shot shows
how the title “HellBoy” is
going from a form back inot
the hell like state, this could
create connotations of te
“hell” like place being the
‘homeland’ for HellBoy and
this clearly creates
representations for HellBoy
to be deeply associated with
hell and this reflects with his
character type and also the
themes which will clearly be
present throughout the whole
film.
