Transition Task 2 for my media A2 project. This shows the process I went through to make a more modernised version of Hitchcock's Mr & Mrs Smith film poster.
2. MR. AND MRS. SMITH
Director- Alfred Hitchcock
Year- 1941
Genre- Comedy | Romance
3. STORYLINE
Sophisticated New York couple David and Annie Smith have an unusual
marriage with an inordinate number of rules and regulations. One rule entitles
them to ask each other one question per month which the other must answer
completely honestly. Annie asks David if he would marry her again if he could
have the time over again and David confides that he misses his freedom and
so probably wouldn't. Later that day, an official from the town where they got
married calls to see David. He explains that owing to a state boundary dispute,
all couples married between 1936 and 1939 in the county were not legally
married. David decides to have fun with this fact, but unbeknown to him, the
county official calls to see Annie too and disaster results.
4. POSTERS
Mr & Mrs Smith had
two film posters.
Within these posters
they use a lot of
colour, bold text
and show stills
from the film. I
took this into
consideration
while making my
own poster.
5. ROM-COM POSTERS
While looking at modern rom-com film posters, I noticed that
they all incorporate the couple. They also give some hint into
what will happen within the film with tag lines and props that
they use. The posters also are quite simple and follow their
own colour schemes. I though I would use these points in my
own poster.
7. POSTER MOCK-UP 1
With this poster I followed
the features of the
modern day examples. I
kept the colours plain
but with a main colour of
yellow, as I felt like it
stood out. I also gave a
insight into the film by
using the hands,
signifying the males in
the film both wanting to
marry the female. I also
took the bold font
feature from the original
poster.
8. POSTER MOCK-UP 2
With this poster I again used
the idea of a bold font. I
also incorporated more
colour, and tried to make
the title pop out with the
red colour. In this mock-up
I also used the
characters like they do in
modern posters. For this,
I made the characters
silhouette to again show
you don’t know who ends
up with who.

10. FINAL MOCK-UP
POSTER
In the end I used the frame idea
as it represents a family
home as the start off married,
but again you don’t know the
couple. The features I liked
on this poster were:
• Darker tone of colours
• Silhouettes stand out
• Bold title
• Connotes key part of the film
