the end of a word, the letters
are called a suffix. Sometimes
the suffix is /ed/, like when we

3. Grammar:
The Doubling Rule
Sometimes when we add the
/ed/ to a short word, with a

the suffix /ed/ works like a
magic /e/ and changes the
word!

The Doubling Rule
We have to build a wall to stop the
bossy /e/ in the suffix /ed/ from
shouting over the consonant
and making the vowel long!
To do this we double the final
consonant – which makes the
wall thick and the bossy /e/ can’t
boss!
hop + p + ed = hopped
