2. INTRODUCTION
Personal and professional development is very essential in
developing abilities and skills which are very essential for the
sustaining in the company. Development in personal and
professional areas are helpful to overcoming barriers which occur
on the path of achieving goals and objectives. In addition to this, it
is also helps in setting up objectives, goals and strategies which
helps in improving knowledge and skills for better performance.
Professional and personal development is only possible when
individual identify the areas in which improvement is required.
Further, it is also helpful in know the skills which will be required in
order to improve the performance of work. Following ppt covers the
areas in personal and professional development is required.
Moreover, it also covers the Gibbs reflective cycle which would
help in knowing the once own learning and understanding and
experience.
3. Areas which will be focuses in personal and professional development
As I am working as a psychiatrist there are many areas in which I
need improvement. There are many skills required for providing
proper care to the mental patients. Following are the areas in which
I need improvement:
Listening skills: Being a psychiatrist, this skills is very essential as
only when one listen carefully understanding the issue will become
easy. In order to know the problem or issue one should have
listening skills. For listening properly, concentration and focus is
very important. One of the problems which I face is when I get
multiple orders form by superiors. In addition to this, in order to
understand patients listening skills are very important. For example,
when my superiors ask me to perform many tasks, I fail in
remembering all the task given to me. As a result, I fail in
completing the tasks on time and effectively. This problem occurs
because of lack of proper listening.
4. Cont...
Time management: There are many mental patients to whom I
have to look after. I find it very difficult look after all the patient
then to find time for myself. This happens because of lack in time
management. I have to manage time in such a way that I could
look after all the patients effectively and could also find time for
myself. According to the work base experience there are many
patients under me and each one has to given proper time so that
their issues could be cured. Because of lack in time
management, I am not able to perform my role effectively.
5. Stress management: As it was said above, I have to look after
many mental patients and there are cases where apart from my
patient I have to look after other patients also when other
professional take leave. In such situation I am not able to manage
stress. This happens because of lack in time management and
ultimately it also results in stress. In addition to this, there are
patients who need more attention and care who can not perform
any of their personal work. In order to perform the work in
continuous basis I feel myself in the stage of stress.

7. Cont...
Problem solving: The understanding level of mental patients is
very less. As a result, there are many problems which has to be
solved by me. In such condition, I find difficulty in taking
appropriate steps in problem solving. As a psychiatrist, it is very
important for me to solve problem effectively and that also with
other hurting anyone's feelings.
Decision making: There are situations where I have to take
immediate decisions related with patients or other health
professional. In this context, I fail in taking appropriate decision
which would be beneficial for all. According to the experience
which I have working with the mental patients, there are situations
when patients get violent and it becomes very difficult to control
them in such case immediate decisions are very important in order
to control them.
8. Cont...
Team work: Team work is very important in controlling mental
patients. At times when patients get violent, for me alone it
becomes very difficult to control them. In such situations, team
work is very important so that patients could be controlled easily.
Further, team work is also important in providing proper treatment
to the patient. It is not possible for me also to handle all the
patients at a time. Therefore, proper coordination and
communication is very essential in providing proper treatment to
the mental patients. Communication plays major role in scheduling
time for each patient properly and in providing them proving them
timely medicine and meditation.
9. Model for Reflective Theory
Gibbs reflective cycle was developed in 1988. In reflection
processes there are six stages involved. According to this cycle,
situation has to be reflected by me, which took place as working as
a psychiatrist of mental patients. Gibbs reflective will be helpful in
doing so. It would be helpful in improving my practices as a
psychiatrist.
.
10. Cont...
Stage1: Description: Working as a psychiatrist, I was on my
routine rounds. I was checking on the patients, both male and
female. Most of the patients were gone to have lunch. When I was
crossing in front of female ward, I found that the patient was
shouting loudly and was taking to herself. After some time her tone
changes and she started taking something else and after some
time she did the same thing. In total she spoke in three different
voices and all different topics. Then I went near her, next to her a
lunch box was kept. Her age was 66 years and she had no
strength of her own to get up and have her meal. I helped her in
having her lunch. When I read her report, I got know that she had
multiple personality disorder. In this disease patient will have
different characters and patient can take up any character at any
time.
11. Cont...
She was not able to communicate properly on account of her poor
mental state. She was fumbling form time to time thereby making it
difficult to have an understanding of what was she trying to say
Stage 2: Feelings: In this stage, Feelings would be discussed by me.
When I went near her, the first thing which I did was to introduce myself.
This way I was aiming at building up relation, I did not want her to feel
strange. I had a doubt, whether she was deaf. So I use my hands to
express myself. In order to feed her, I took permission. As a response she
nodded her head. I touched her shoulder and kept telling her and asking
her about her problems. I used different body gestures so as to express
myself and I also had a doubt whether she had hearing problem or not. It
helped be a lot in making her understand easily. Further, I also maintained
eye contact so that she feel comfortable.
12. Stage 3: Evaluation: For this situation, my evaluation is that, I
have done a right thing by accompanying her and in helping her
to have her lunch. I was not able to understand what she was
trying to convey. Body gesture helped me to make her
understand easily. After reading her report, I tried to find out from
how and what could have been the reason that she had multiple
personality disorder.
13. Cont...
Stage 4: Analysis: From this I analysed that, understanding is very
important in order to provide patient proper care. If understanding is
there, only then problem could be solved effectively. Further, non-verbal
skills did help me in communicating my feelings. Understanding and
problem are very essential for helping the patient effectively.
Stage 5: Conclusion:Through this model I was able to discuss the
situation more easily and was able to understand the areas in which I lack
and in areas in which I need improvement. I need more improvement in
developing my understanding towards the patients and have to work hard
in problem solving and decision making.
14. Cont...
Stage 6: Action plan: If I face similar situation like this, at that time I
would be more prepared and would focus on understanding patients issues
and try to come up with solutions through which they could be cured.
According to a survey it was found that mental patients can be cured
easily when they are given more attention and care. I would make proper
scheduling of time so that all the patients could be given proper time and
they could be given better treatment.

16. CONCLUSION
From this ppt, it can be articulated that as a psychiatrist it is very
essential to possess skills like understanding, decision making,
team work, stress management, time management, etc. These
skills should be improved so that mental patients could be treated
more effectively. Further, Gibbs reflective model was very helpful in
explaining the situations easily and in identifying the areas in which
I lack. This type of situation which I faced was helpful in developing
my understanding. Thus, it can be concluded that in any king of job
skills are very helpful in performing the given job effectively and
efficiently.
