Question 2
How does your media product represent
particular social groups?- How do you
attract your target audience?
Front cover image
My model is
wearing makeup.
This is typical of
older teenage
females.
The pale blue
background is simple
and neutral, appealing to
both males and females
within my target age
range.
The model’s clothes
subverts the typical
expectations of a female
although are typical of
the genre of music I am
representing.
The model is making
direct eye contact with
the reader, this
represents her
confidence and the fact
she is female artist in a
male dominated genre
My magazine Is aimed
at a mixed race.
Although I have not
established this through
this image I hope not to
have narrowed my
audience.
The model I have
chosen is young and
so suits my target
audience.
Recognisable brand
attracts older
teenagers.

images
The variety of
gender’s portrayed
on this page
represents my target
audience.
Including specific equipment
suggests a middle class
audience as this is
expensive.
The use of a
recognisable brand
of headphones
appeals to an older
teenage audience.
I have asked the model I
used to pose slightly. This
makes him look like he has
confidence suggesting a
male audience can relate to
him
A grey background gives
connotations of night time,
when most DJ-ing is done.
Double Page Spread
Image A comfortable
pose suggests
confidence and
empowers the
female members
of my target
market.
A recognisable
brand establishes a
relationship with the
age range I am
aiming towards.
Eye contact
creates synthetic
personalisation
and allows the
narrative voice to
be more direct.
The colour connotations
associated with white are that
of purity and neutrality; linking
in with the fact that the article
features a new artist. This
also reflects women bringing
a fresh side to a mostly male
dominated genre
The slight shadow
across the models face
implies she is going to
totally expose herself
but does have
something to say
Fonts
• I incorporated 2 main fonts in my magazine design.
• Star Jedi – This establishes the techno side of the genre I am
portraying and the bold, capitalised nature appeals to older,
male teenagers. They might also associate it with star wars.
• Harabara - This font is slightly more subtle then the one
above and balances the sharpness with a more rounded
shape. It appeals more to a female audience.
• Together the fonts attract both males and females.
• They are both sans-serif and this reflects the genre of music
my magazine portrays.
• Levenim MT – I used this font for the article on my double
page spread as it was more conventional to use a plain font
and also appeared more feminine, mirroring the female artist
featured.
Colours
This colour is more feminine. I chose it
because it is vibrant and ties in with
the name of my magazine, ‘Intensity’.
It gives connotations of wealth.
The blue attracts a more male
audience. I chose it because along
with the pink the colours now attract
males and females.
Yellow contrasts nicely with the blue
and pink and is more sexually neutral
then the other two, so balances the
page nicely. It gives connotations of
summer and happiness.
All of the colours are
very bright and striking.
They are bold and can
be associated with my
chosen genre. This
range appeals to a
variety of social
classes, sexualities and
genders
Language Choices
• Front Page- “life’s a beach”, “awesomeness” and “
DJ demon” appeal to the age group I am
marketing my product towards.
• Contents Page- “awesome”, “love of techno”
appeal not only to a young audience but to fans of
the genre. Specific vocabulary like “Pioneer midi-
controller” establishes appeal the artists
themselves suggesting my magazine can inspire
young people.
• Double Page Spread- “blew the roof off with her
epic set”, “shit load” and “bassbin bustin” are uses
of hyperbole and express the artists talent. They
appeal to a mostly teenage audience. The use of
taboo language ,“shit”, creates a division between
a young and old audience.
Question 3
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
I would choose to
use billboards. . .
The
radio. . .“Have you heard of
intensity magazine?
The Latest magazine
for all you dance
music fans?” The internet.
. .
Advertising
Development Hell Ltd
• Based in London, this company would be
ideal for publishing and distributing my
magazine.
• It currently distributes Mixmag; the worlds
leading dance music magazine, selling about
20,000 copies each time.
• It also owns don’t stay in.
• They have the technology to develop an app
and have done with Mixmag.
• It was founded over 10 years ago so they
must have established contacts in the
industry.
Question 5
How did you attract/address your audience?
What did they want?
• A definite, bright colour scheme
• Not overly crowded with information
• An image dominated article
• An image that attracts the reader
• Information both current and up and
coming artists
• A mix of interview questions and
information

• Inform readers
• Enlighten reader on new

• Advise artists
Question 6
What have you learnt about technologies
from the process of constructing this
product?
Photoshop
Photoshop allowed me to alter images:
1. I used the Magnetic lasso
tool to cut the image out
from the background.
2. Using the healing brush i
was then able to patch over
the branch going through the
hat.
3. I used the eye
dropper tool to
select a pale
blue.
4. The
paintbrush tool
then enabled me
to apply this
colour to the new
background.
Tip: use the normal lasso
tool to neaten up the
work done with the
magnetic one
Photoshop
Photoshop
By adjusting the contrast, brightness and colour levels I was able
to make the image more vibrant and sharp. I then used the crop
tool to make it seem wider.
Photoshop
Layers can be used to control what aspect on an image you are
working on. For each change you make it is suggesting you add
a layer so any mistakes can be easily retraceable.
In Design
This tool is used to create a
frame. A frame can contain text,
image or simply just colour. I
used this tool to design the
layout of my magazine.
This tool is used to add text.
This mouse is used for
selecting and editing frames.
This mouse is used for selecting
and editing images within a
frame.
By using the pen tool I was able
to create new anchor points
from which I could fit a frame
around an image.
Using the eye dropper tool
allowed me to select colours
and add them to my ‘swatches’
list. From here I could then
apply the same shade of each
colour to where I needed it.
By showing the
paragraph settings
I could take the
hyphens out of my
article.
When I had finished I exported
my final design as a JPEG.

Camera Work
Rule of thirds- Images
should be divided into
three and each third
should be proportional to
the others
Aperture- This is a setting
on the camera. It effects the
depth of field and lighting.
Narrow aperture= deep
focus. Wide aperture=
shallow focus.
Shutter Speed- This is a setting
on the camera. It effects
lighting. A fast shutter speed is
suitable for bright light and a
long shutter speed exposes the
image for longer, allowing more
light in.
Medium close up is used on
the front cover and two are
used on the contents page
along with a mid-shot. A
wide shot has been used on
my double page spread.
I used natural light for my
front cover photo, double
page spread photo and one
image on the contents page.
The other two were shot
using artificial lighting.
PowerPoint
PowerPoint has been used to
produce my evaluation along
with windows movie maker and
my iPhone.
Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what
do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full product?
Front CoversI have used a
bolder title.
The image is
more
conventional-
being a medium
close up
I have made the
main feature
more
noticeable.I have improved my use
of Photoshop and the
image has been cut out
smoother.
I have established more
of a brand style.
A conventional 3
colour scheme makes
it look more typical of
a magazine.
Through improving my
use of inDesign I was
able to wrap text
around the image.
I have made my points
less lengthy.
Contents PagesMy have followed a
more blocky style,
more conventional of
music magazines.
My general design is
neater
My title is bolder and I
have continued on the
brand style.
Clearer navigation has
been achieved through
colour divisions and
number associating with
I have
improved
my use of
Photosho
p and the
images
have
been cut
out
smoother
.
Colours contrast with each
other better and make the
page look more vibrant.

Editor's Notes

  1. The radio and billboards- nationally. The internet- internationally.
  2. Don't stay in- the world's biggest clubbing social network. Created in 2003,DontStayIn.com, which is active in the UK, USA, Spain, Ireland, Australia and France , has 1 million unique visitors per month and 20 million monthly page impressions , making it one the biggest destinations for active 18 to 24 year olds on the web .
