5. Nail care
Nail care is a service
referring to cosmetic
beauty treatment of
fingernails and toenails
which can be done at
home or in beauty salons.
6. Nail care services
▪ Manicure: it refers to the curation and care of a
clients nail in their hands.
▪ Pedicure: it refers to the curation and care of a
clients nail in their feet.
▪ Nail polish: Also called lacquers or enamels to
provide a pleasing look and to address specific nail
plate conditions, such as soft peeling or brittle nails.
7. Tools, Materials and equipment in nail care
▪ There are several tools and materials and equipment
needed by the nail care attendant. To make her a
successful performer, she has to familiarize herself
with all these tools and materials in giving manicure
and pedicure.
9. NAIL FILE
▪ This is used to shape the
free edge of the nails to
smoothen them.
▪ How to use: With your
dominant hand,hold
firmly the nail file and
position it under the free
edge of the nails.
10. EMERY BOARD
▪ This is a wooden sand
paper like material use to
filesoft and fragile nails.
▪ How to use: This is used
to similar manner with
the nail.

▪ This is used to push
back and loosen dead
cuticle.
▪ How to use: Hold this in
the same manner as you
hold the pencil while
writing. With the dull
spade side, loosen the
cuticle by pushing back
lightly and carefully.

▪ This is used to trim or
shorten finger nails or
toenails.
▪ How to use: hold firmly the
clippers with the cutting edge
downward between your
thumb index and middle
finger.

▪ It is used to trim excess
cuticle found at the base

▪ How to use: position the
thumb on the side of the
handle and the
remaining fingers over
the opposite handle.

▪ It is a tool used to
smoothen and polish the

▪ How to use: Smoothen
the nails by using
downward motion from
the base to the finger tip.

36. Ways of maintaining tools and equipment
▪ 1. Sterilization it is a process of destroying all
microorganism present in an object or place.
▪ 2. Sanitization it is the process of destroying some,
not all microorganism.
37. Preparation of equipment to be sanitize
▪ Read the instructions/direction on the disinfectant and
understand them very well.
▪ Measure and mix the required disinfectant following the
direction.
▪ Saturate a rag or cloth for cleaning with the disinfectant
solution and wipe the entire surface or area of equipment.
▪ Wipe dry the surface area with paper towel or cleaning cloth.
▪ Throw away used sanitizing solution and used towels.
38. Preparation of metal tools/implements for sterilization
▪ Soak the tools in hot soapy water solution to remove
the waste dirt or oil residue.
▪ Soak the tools or implements in 70% to 90%alcohol
solution for 20mins.
▪ Remove the tools/implements from the solution wipe
them and place them into dry sterilizer.
39. Preparation of sanitizing jar
▪ Cleanse first the sanitizing jar with disinfectant .wipe it dry.
▪ Arrange a thin layer of sterile cotton at the bottom of the jar.
▪ From the wet or dry sanitizer remove the tools or implements
and place them into the sanitizing jar with handles except for
metal nail files.
▪ With 70% to 90% alcohol solution fill the jar emough solution
to cover cutting edges and tips of orangewood stick.
40. Keeping the workplace clean and safe
▪ Beauty salons must be in good sanitary condition. It
must be well lighted and well ventilated.
▪ The salon premises should be free from rodents,
vermin, files, and other similar insects
▪ Continues running hot and cold water must be
provided in all salon establishment.
▪ Washable and clean curtains are necessary including
floor coverings which are clean and free form dust.
41. ▪ Hair trimmings on the floor must be kept at frequent
intervals. Cotton and other waste material must
dispose in garbage bin.
▪ The rest rooms should be very well sanitize and
provided with bathroom tissues and other needs of
the clients.

▪ Sanitize properly and keep clean all tools or implements
ready for the next use.
▪ Provide a separate trash bin for empty bottles and containers.
▪ Store arrange use cosmetic products and other chemical in a
proper place. Label them properly.
▪ Clean and sanitize finger bowls before using for the next
patron or client.
▪ Sterilize metal tools and instruments following proper
sterilization procedure.

porous material such as nail files, nail buffers and etc.
▪ Dispose properly materials in enclosed waste
container.
▪ Dispose contaminated wastes following the correct
procedure as prescribed by the local authorities.

▪ Occupational health and safety is a planed system of
working to prevent illness or injury where you work by
recognizing hazards and risk.
▪ Hazards and risk must be identified by the manicurist
evaluate and control or eliminate hazard or modify
the risk it poses.
45. Common hazards in beauty salon
▪ Electrical hazard electrical appliances used in the beauty
salons can create serious health and safety risk especially in
wet condition. Electrical shock can cause electrocution.
▪ Chemical hazard used and/ or produced at work that are
potential harm to health and safety of people at work are
hazardous.
▪ Fire hazard accident may happen like fire since the salon
has its electrical appliances that can create fire.
46. ▪ Biological hazard this refer to substances that pose danger
to living organism primarily the human being.
▪ Ergonomics manicurist/pedicurist uses repetitive
movements with force with tools and materials in nail care.
Holding uncomfortable position for long period of time causes
injurist to the manicurist.
47. Personal protective equipment PPE
▪ PPE refers to clothing equipment design and worm by the
manicurist or salon workers risk of injury or illness.
▪ EXAMPLE of PPE gloves, eyewear, splash proof apron,
and protective mask.

▪ Nails and skin prevented from injury.
▪ Potential harmful chemical to the skin prevented from being
absorbed.
