7. What Is Data Journalism?
“Data Journalism is telling stories that are based on
concrete data. Even though it is not something new and
journalists have been reporting using data for quite some
time, recent technological advancements have made it
easier to do data journalism using a plethora of new open
source tools available to us all.” – Data Journalism Handbook

8. What Is Data Journalism?
Data journalism is a journalism specialty reflecting the
increased role that numerical data is used in the production
and distribution of information in the digital era. It reflects
the increased interaction between content producers
(journalist) and several other fields such as design,
computer science and statistics.

10. • Journalism done with data,
• New possibilities that open up when you combine the
traditional ‘nose for news’ and ability to tell a compelling
story, with the sheer scale and range of digital information
now available,
• Can help explain how a story relates to an individual
• Data can be the source of data journalism, or it can be the
tool with which the story is told — or it can be both.

14. Data and journalism
Data journalism roughly divides into three broad types that
often overlap:
1. Traditional investigative data journalism, finding stories in
the data – with or without visualizations.
2. Using the data to tell a story or explain a complex
problem – this will involve graphics or ‘visualizations’
3. Providing a service or a tool that tells the reader
something personally relevant - school score cards / tables
or simple financial tools and calculators

19. Data Journalism as it is
known now is just over 7
years old.
BUT
It has its roots in Computer
Assisted reporting (CAR),
which goes back to 1960s.

20. Around 2010- 2011 data journalism was a buzz concept
which raised discussion among journalists, researchers and
media executives.
The Guardian, The New York Times were showing the way.
First introductory courses in data journalism were arranged
in universities and some other institutions.
