Those designed without a conscious attempt to mimic current fashion.
Many are built by their occupants or by non-professional builders
Relatively simple houses meant to provide basic shelter with little concern for presenting
a stylish face

4.  Windows aligned horizontally and vertically in symmetrical rows, never
in adjacent pairs, usually 5 ranked on front facade.

2 Stages 1900-1940: First Arts and Crafts Movement - Ornamentation not eliminated but modernized, low pitched roofs, wide 
eave overhangs. Prairie Style (1900-1920) - Chicago Frank Lloyd Wright Second Style Craftsman (1905-1930), Sourthern CA
Second Phase post WWI - Machine Age, standardized part, absence of all non-functional decoration and structural honesty.
Flat roofs, smooth wall surface.

Many are built by their occupants or by non-professional builders Relatively simple houses meant to provide basic shelter with little concern for presenting a stylish face Folk Houses* Built with at least some attempt at being fashionable.  They show the influence of shapes, materials, detailing, or other features that make up an architectual style that is currently in vogue.
