“Really Big Show
We knew we’d arrived when we were asked to appear on
The Ed Sullivan Show in New York. I’d seen Elvis Presley and
the Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I remembered from the time
that I was little that if you were really important, you went
on Ed Sullivan.
As show time approached, I was kind of in an altered state,
completely petrified, and for the first time I think Son was, too.
I was wearing a kelly-green, wide-wale corduroy peacoat, with
a matching poor-boy shirt and my Beatle boots from Anello
and David; I wanted to look totally English.
Ed introduced us as his “dear little paisans…the
current sensations of the recording field…Sonny
and Chur.”
Sonny and Chur? We sang three songs on that
show-”I Got You Babe,” “But You’re Mine,” and
“Where Do You Go?”-and the whole time all I kept
thinking was, I’m on national television, and Ed
Sullivan just called me Chur!
