Evaluation Question 3- What kind of media instituion might distribute your media product and why?
1. What kind of media
institution might distribute
your media product and
why?
2. What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
An institution is a company that disperses a media product for audience consumption. A film
would go to cinemas either nationally or internationally. How-ever after being at the cinema for
a while it would the get dispersed to shops to sell merchandise either DVD or soundtrack etc.
Before making the film, the directors or producers can go to the institution to pitch their idea for
the fil and could also ask if the institution would fund the project. Popular institutions; BBC, The
UK Film Council, Vertigo Films, Film 4. Due to them being the most popular institutions I decided
to research further about them. I did this to find out if they would be suitable to distribute my
film.
3. The UK Film Council
The institution has backed more than 900 films of which include feature and short films. Their
goal is to make the UK a global centre for films amongst the world’s competitive film industry.
They support many upcoming film directors, by funding their British films to attract a wider
audience. The UK Film Council is backed lead agency. It ensures that the economic,, cultural and
educational aspects of film are represented effectively throughout the UK and abroad.
Lottery funding; The National Lottery is an intrinsic part of improving vulture throughout the UK
and is often used to fund various institutions throughout the UK of which film is one. The
government department for culture, media and sport will decide and how much of the lottery
money will be provided to the different industries. The UK Film Council provides funding in
relation to the following areas; script development, film production, short films, film distribution
and export, film education, culture and archives, festivals and audience support schemes, skills
and national and regional films.
The UK Film Council is also in partnership with BFI, which I have already researched into.
4. BBC Films
BBC Films are the forefront in producing British independent films. They produce many feature films. They
are committed in finding and developing new talent. How-ever they are picky about the films that they
back.
5. Vertigo Films
Vertigo Films is a UK media company which creates and distributes commercially driven
independent cinema. They use new technology and they pay attention to the budgets, this is to
address their audience in the most care to produce films that the audience approves off; that
they are authentic to what is trying to be represented.
6. Film 4
Film 4 showcases a wide-range of British made films and international films that come from all
over the world. They don’t just show films they are also produces many films. Some of their
award winning films include "This is England" by Shane Meadows. Film 4 is patterned with Warp
X films where they challenge British and International films creating new ones for a lower
budget, with the intention of expanding the niche audience.
A niche film appeals to certain audience; people of a certain race, religion, age or lifestyle.
7. What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
Due to our film being low budget, the media institution that would most likely distribute our film
would be"Vertigo Films" because they specialize in distributing low-budget films and are UK
based.
