I. CONTEXTUAL FACTORS
MDD Standard
1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or owner and school
factors:
The institution’s name is Catholic University of the most holy Concepcion; it is located in
Concepcion, Bio bio. The institution consists of classrooms, computer laboratories, offices,
sport facilities, cafeterias, auditorium and green areas. Currently, there are about nine thousand
young adults studying at this university. The pupils that we are observing, whose teacher is Mr.
Jaime Hernandez, are studying engineering. The class is composed of thirty students from which
three are girls and twenty seven are boys. The results of the first quiz show that the 36 % of the
students obtained a score below the passing score (4.0) between 1.0 and 3.7. This result
changed in the second evaluation where the 23% of the students had a low score between
1.0and 3.9.
1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons:
The facts mentioned above may have a high impact on our lessons. The good quality
infrastructure of this institution gives students the confidence to be studying there. Also the
facilities this university has would help to set a good class scenario for students giving us tools
for teaching and creating knowledge on students. For instance the laboratories are one of the
facts that make the learning process easier. However, what could impact the most our lessons
are the students’ scores. This is an issue that may help us to know how much students know and
if they are really willing to learn what is being taught.
1.2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications:
As mentioned before this class consists of thirty students, we have observed two classes in
which the attendance was not high, about fifteen out of thirty attended to both lessons. This
course is elementary English for engineers; therefore this subject is not of high importance for
their major. In spite of that, we believe that teacher’s attitude may change students’ point of
view of this subject. What have caught our attention is that always the same students
participate during the lessons. Also the teacher’s attitude gave us a good feeling, from what we
were able to observe he has a close relation with students and he encourages them to work and
participate. We have chosen two students from this class to be observed and analyzed; their
names are Eladio Hernan Flores Diaz and Pedro Esteban Henriquez Gonzalez. We have chosen
them because of their classwork and participation.
2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:
The first student we will describe is Eladio Hernan Flores Diaz. He has been present in both
lessons. His attitude toward this class is positive, he pays attention to the teacher when
presenting the class and he also works on the given exercises. One of his best characteristic is
that he asks the teacher whenever he does not understand something.
2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
We believe that his characteristics would highly impact our lesson because his attitude may
motivate other students to learn and to participate. Also, it may help us for our lesson plans.
Having a student which is willing to work and to participate would make our planning more
reliable because we will be sure of the motivation that these student could give to his
classmates. Moreover, the fact that he asks many questions will help the learning of the rest of
the class that is not confident enough to ask.
2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:
The second student we chose is Pedro Esteban Henriquez Gonzalez. As well as the first student
his attitude toward this lesson is positive. In contrast with the first student Pedro’s marks are
high which shows that he spends a good amount of time studying for this subject. His classwork
and participation is good, but also he helps his classmates around him. He contributes to what
the teacher teaches and as Eladio he asks many questions.
2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
To have a student with those characteristics may help us when teaching. In our opinion when a
student that knows the topics helps other students make the teacher’s work easier. This means,
we can rely on him when needing someone to help other students. Moreover, to have a student
which really studies and give significance to what is being taught would give us as teacher a
better opportunity to construct knowledge because we will have a better chance to personalize
or contextualize the lesson by using him as an example or a point of reference.
3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:
The classroom consists of a structure of 6 m long and 4 m wide, which is one of the smallest
rooms in Aulas building. It has 2 lamps and a capacity for approximately 30 students; in addition
there are no windows or any ventilation system, which was very unusual for us. This room was
implemented with a board, a computer and a data projector, the last one does not function in
its better conditions. This place is cold, the same as the whole building; and the colours chosen
for this space also contributes to this sensation, which are light blue and white.
3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:
The first physical aspect which we consider relevant for students’ learning is the structure of the
classroom. This space is approximately 6 m long and 4 m wide, and it was built without windows
or any entrance of natural light. To begin with, the room named before is very narrow and
short, that makes difficult the transit through one side to the other; and in addition,
3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
We believe that this type of structure is likely to increase the level of anxiety in students, which
have an incidence in their concentration towards the class. First, the space to move through the
seats is much reduced if we have complete assistance; therefore it contributes to the sensation
of feeling constricted. Also, the lack of windows could make feel students depressed because of
the lack of natural light, and the lack of a source of fresh air can makes them falling asleep.
3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:
The second relevant physical aspect of the classroom is the technology implemented in it. The
data projector used in class differs in quality from the rest of equipment. The images which are
shown in the screen appear in tones rose and black, a feature that makes pictures difficult to
understand.
3.2.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
University students are accustomed to the use of this technology during their daily classes, and
the lack of fidelity of this projector creates the need of another engaging visual tool, or at least a
challenge to take into account just the board to perform that function, which sometimes is
considered by students as boring or too common to be interesting.
4. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context to provide quality
teaching
In our opinion, this is an important part of the lesson plan, because contextualization helps us
enormously in the challenge of being aware of details that are essential if we want to teach
effectively. Details, such as interest in learning English, current level of the language,
characteristics of the physical space of the classroom should be considered in order to shape
our style of teaching to the actual restrictions present in this group. It contributes to make us an
idea of our purpose to teach, the activities and tasks that could be better in certain situations,
and also, what our role as teachers should be, considering that we have not had any formal
experience before.
