UNIX access control specifies file access for only three broad groups - the owner, the group at file creation, and others. In contrast, Windows access control allows specifying permissions for individual users and groups, and offers finer-grained permissions. The paper "Windows access control demystified" provides more details on the differences between UNIX and Windows access control models.

Compare the UNIX access control with the Windows access control. The paper "Windows access control demystified" by Govindavjahala and Appel may help: (accessible from https://www.cs.princeton.edu/~appel/papers/winval.pdf) Solution UNIX access control is much more "coarse". I say that because an administrator can only specify access for three broad sets of people on UNIX (the owner, the group specified at file creation time, and "others"). In Windows, by contrast, you can specify permissions for individual users, individual groups or any combination of the two. Second, the permissions are also less coarse on Windows as well.
