created?

2. The exact origin, or invention, of hockey is
uncertain. But many historians have theory's
on who, what, when, and where the sport of
hockey came to be.
3. The sport of hockey developed by combining
several games, including 1) lacrosse on ice, 2)
field hockey, played with a ball, and 3) hurley
on ice.

4. Who, Where, and When?
• In 1866, ice skates were first patented.
• In 1872, James Creighton moved to Montreal and brought skates
and curved sticks with him.
• Hockey was initially only played outside on ponds, with a ball.
Creighton invented a wood disk to play inside.
• In 1875 Creighton and his friends staged the first public indoor
exhibition of ice hockey, at the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal.
5. • Nov. 26, 1917: The NHL was founded. Teams included the Montreal
Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas, and
Quebec Bulldogs.
• Oct. 11, 1924: Bruins and Montreal Maroons granted franchises
• Dec. 1, 1924: Boston hosts Montreal in 1st U.S. game
• May 15, 1926: New York Rangers granted franchise
• Feb. 25, 1940: 1st televised hockey game in U.S.
• Aug. 26, 1961: Hockey Hall of Fame opens in Toronto
• June 5, 1967: NHL expands with six new franchises

6. Why the phrase “The Original Six?”
• The Original Six is a term for the group of six teams that made
up the NHL for the 25 seasons between 1942 and the1967 NHL
Expansion.
• The 6 teams were the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black
Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, New York
Rangers, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
• All of the Original Six are still active franchises in the league.
• Only the Montreal and Toronto franchises existed in the NHL's
inaugural 1917 season.
7. Fun Facts!
• The earliest games of hockey were played using chunks
of cow manure as pucks.
• The first rubber hockey pucks were made from sliced up
lacrosse balls.
• You can celebrate the hockey pucks “birthday” on
February 7th.
• Fox television once tried a florescent hockey puck during
a season.
