GLOBAL ISSUES
THAT CONCERN
SCHOOLS AND
SOCIETY
Presented by:
FRITZIE D. DAYOT
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
 At the end of this Chapter, you should be able to:
 discuss at least two global issues in society; and
 explain proposed solutions to the social problems.
THE WORLD HAS BECOME A
GLOBAL VILLAGE. WE HAVE
BECOME A CITIZEN OF A
GLOBAL COMMUNITY.
 Climate change is a long-term change in the
average weather patterns that have come
define Earth's local, regional and global
climates. These changes have a broad range
observed effects that are synonymous with the
term (NASA).
The effects of climate change include:
 Rising sea levels
 Water and food scarcity
 Drought
 Extreme Weather conditions

Climate Change
 Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials
into the environment. These harmful materials
are called pollutants. Pollutants can be natural,
such as volcanic ash. They can also be created
by human activity, such as trash
or runoff produced by
factories. Pollutants damage the quality of air,
water, and land.
 Many things that are useful to people
produce pollution. Cars spew pollutants from
their exhaust pipes. Burning coal to
create electricity pollutes the air. Industries and
homes generate garbage and sewage that can
pollute the land and water. Pesticides—
chemical poisons used to kill weeds and
insects—seep into waterways and harm wildlife

Pollution
VIOLENCE - AN ACT OF PHYSICAL FORCE THAT CAUSES OR IS INTENDED TO CAUSE
HARM. THE DAMAGE INFLICTED BY VIOLENCE MAY BE PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, OR BOTH
(BRITANNICA ENCYCLOPEDIA).
VARIOUS FORMS OF VIOLENCE
 PHYSICAL VIOLENCE – OCCURS
WHEN SOMEONE USES A PART OF
THEIR BODY OR AN OBJECT TO
CONTROL A PERSON’S ACTIONS
 SEXUAL VIOLENCE – OCCURS
WHEN A PERSON IS FORCED TO
UNWILLINGLY TAKE PART IN
SEXUAL ACTIVITY.
VARIOUS FORMS OF VIOLENCE
 EMOTIONAL VIOLENCE – OCCURS
WHEN SOMEONE SAYS OR DOES
SOMETHING TO MAKE A PERSON
FEEL STUPID OR WORTHLESS
 PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE –
OCCURS WHEN SOMEONE USES
THREATS AND CAUSES FEAR IN
AN INDIVIDUAL TO GAIN
CONTROL.
VARIOUS FORMS OF VIOLENCE
 SPIRITUAL VIOLENCE – OCCURS
WHEN SOMEONE USES AN
INDIVIDUAL’S SPIRITUAL BELIEFS TO
MANIPULATE, DOMINATE OR
CONTROL ANOTHER PERSON.
 CULTURAL VIOLENCE – OCCURS
WHEN AN INDIVIDUAL IS HARMED
AS A RESULT OF PRACTICES THAT
ARE PART OF HER OR HIS CULTURE,
RELIGION, OR TRADITION.
 Racism - prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism
directed against a person or people on the basis of
their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group,
typically one that is a minority or marginalized.
SECURITY AND WELL-BEING
LACK OF EDUCATION
LACK OF EDUCATION - CAN BE DEFINED AS A STATE WHERE PEOPLE HAVE A BELOW-
AVERAGE LEVEL OF COMMON KNOWLEDGE ABOUT BASIC THINGS THAT THEY WOULD URGENTLY NEED
IN THEIR DAILY LIFE. FOR INSTANCE, THIS COULD INCLUDE BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN MATH, WRITING,
SPELLING, ETC.
 More than 72 million children throughout the globe that are of the age to be in primary education are not enrolled in
school.
 This can be attributed to inequality and marginalization as well as poverty. Fortunately, there are many organizations
that work directly with the issue of education in providing the proper tools and resources to aid schools.
In the Philippines, the lack of education is attributed to:
 Social divide – There is no fair learning access in the country. Lack of resources – Large-scale shortfalls in classrooms,
teachers, and other tools to sustain sound learning also make up a big issue.
 Also reported in Inquirer.net MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday
acknowledged that the country has been suffering from “learning poverty” following a report from the World Bank
(WB) that 90 percent of children with age 10 years old could not read (2021).
UNEMPLOYEMENT
UNEMPLOYMENT
 Without the necessary
education and skills for
employment, many people
struggle to find jobs and create
proper living for themselves
and their families.
 This leads to a lack of
necessary resources, such as
enough food, clothing,
transportation, and proper
living conditions.
GOVERNMENT CORRUPTION – INCLUDE GRAFT, BRIBERY,
EMBEZZLEMENT, BACKDOOR DEALS, NEPOTISM, PATRONAGE.
Corruption is a major cause of poverty considering how it affects the poor and the economic development. It can
be detrimental to the safety and well being of citizens living within the corrupted vicinity and can cause increase of
violence and physical threats.
MALNOURISHMENT AND HUNGER
MALNOURISHMENT AND HUNGER
 Currently, there a re 795 million people who do not have enough to eat.
 Long-term success to ending world hunger starts with ending poverty.
 By fighting poverty through proper training for employment, education and the teaching of
cooking and gardening skills, people who are suffering will be more likely to get jobs, earn
enough money to buy food and even learn how to make their own food to save money.
 Malnutrition includes undernutrition (wasting, stunting, underweight), inadequate vitamins or
minerals, overweight, obesity, and resulting diet-related noncommunicable diseases.
SUBSTANCE ABUSE – IS THE HARMFUL OR HAZARDOUS USE OF
PSYCHOACTIVE SUBSTANCES, INCLUDING ALCOHOL AND ILLICIT
DRUGS (WHO).
 The United Nations reports that, by the
beginning of the 21st century, an estimated
185 million people over the age of 15 were
consuming drugs globally.
 Different classes of people both rich and poor
partake in substance abuse but the developing
world, marginalized groups and communities
are the most vulnerable to this reality.
TERRORISM – IS AN ISSUE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD THAT
CAUSES FEAR AND INSECURITY, VIOLENCE AND DEATH.
 Across the globe, terrorists attack
defenseless and innocent people without
warning.
 This makes national security a higher
priority for combating terrorism as well as
promoting justice in wrongdoings to
illustrate the enforcement of the law and
the serious punishments for terror crimes.

Reflection Questions:
 Do I contribute to any of the global issues?
 Am I part of the problem?
 Can I be a part of the solution? How?
