2. 2. Me as.. .. An older sister What it means to be.. ... Looked up to
 3. 3. Key Concepts

Power-The ability or capacity to perform or act effectively. 1

My two key concepts when looking at myself as an older sister and what it means to be looked up to are:

Value- To highly regard something. 1

 4. 5. Who am I as a sister ?

I see myself as a role model, someone who can be an influence on my younger siblings. I value this role as it allows me to be someone who my brothers and sister can say they look up to. I aim to always be an example to them, and try not to abuse the power of being and older sister.

When around my siblings, I tend to put on a mask in certain situations. My 13year old brother Eleyjah said

“ When I get in trouble with dad to do with school, you always turn into an adult like role and lecture me. Whereas normally you’re so different like laughing and joking around with us.”

 5. 6. How the media portrays older siblings.

When looking at how the media shows older siblings, I paid particular attention to the television programme ‘Eastenders’.

I looked at how the character ‘Whitney’ (the eldest of her siblings) influences her younger brothers and sister ‘Liam, Tiffany and Morgan’.

I concentrated mainly on Whitney’s relationship with her younger sister Tiffany. She looks up to her older sister she says ‘ you are my best friend Whit. The best big sister in the world’. In many episodes Whitney’s unhappiness and teenage troubles have rubbed off onto Tiffany, worrying her and causing her to tell her mother about what’s going on. However most of the time Whitney continues to put on a front, (‘performance’) for Tiffany so she doesn’t end up making the same mistakes like herself.

 6. 7.

In this short clip, you can see an example of the sisters relationship.

Tiffany is asking her sister about her current boyfriend ‘Billie’. You can see in this clip that Whitney is a huge role model in Tiffany’s life.

Click on this link. http:// =3-nkdkRBMzo Continued
 7. 8. Goffman’s theory

In regard to Goffman’s theory of self presentation, how I change my role as a sister, is called my ‘performance’ or ‘playing the game’ . This performance is constantly changing in order to fulfil my role and again not abuse the power I hold as an older sister .

 8. 9. Additional thoughts

Finally I asked some of my peers who have younger siblings and older siblings . I wanted to find out their views on how they value their role as the eldest sibling and how they look up to their older siblings.
