Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04
The fish of these shore grounds, due perhaps to the greater great quantity of food right here, are
thought to be distinctly superior in good quality to those of the same kinds taken on the offshore
banks. The cod and the haddock, particularly, of the Gulf of Maine are notably well conditioned sea
food and are noted for their excellence.
The statistics presented in Kitchen table 2 show only a fraction of the capture from the Inner
Grounds, since they deal fully with the fares of minn kota endura vessels of 5 net lots and over.
There are thousands of the so-called "certified" or "under-tonned" boats, primarily gill-netters, that
take numerous pounds from these seas annually, principally cod and haddock.
In the Maine coast and across the line in New Brunswick there are other than 300 weirs which
furnished to American canners and smokers during the year 1923 (whose figures have been chosen
as which represents an average season) 77,000,000 weight of herring. About the coast of
Massachusetts there are 50 or even more fish and weirs traps, and through the Isle of Shoals to
Pemaquid Point in Maine there are more than 50 floating traps in the various bays, on the points of
offshore islands, or even in the open ocean, and all these take a rich harvest from these waters. ,
there is the lobster fishery, more important from the Gulf of Maine than anywhere else in the
states.Then and way too
Of those various branches of the fisheries industries handful of statistics are available, yet we may
say that the figures of the 1919 census showed that the "under-ton" vessels mentioned landed
5,324,426 lbs of fish with the port of Boston, mostly of cod and haddock, and therefore the same
type of create in 1923 landed at Portland, Me., more than 3,000,000 pounds, primarily of ground
seafood. We also know that each and every small town, town, island and hamlet and city along this
nearly 4,000 'miles of coast line takes its toll from the sea.
Lukes Rock. This rock is placed S. by E. 3 miles from Moosabec Light, spherical in shape, and about
1 mile in size. Depths are from 25 to 35 fathoms; the bottom isrocks and gravel, and mud. There is
some vessel fishing, though this is mainly a small-boat fishing floor. Hake are considered here from
June to September, inclusive; cod are present concerning the rocks the year about. Pollock are
within spring and drop, and haddock from December to Feb, inclusive. Minn Kota Endura is simply
by trawl and fingers line.
Newfound Soil. A small rocky location about 1/4 mile all over with an automatic buoy in the center
for guidance into the Bay of Fundy. This is a small-fishing boat ground having depths averaging 18
fathoms. It lies about 3 miles S. by W. from Moosabec Light. months and Species are as on Lukes
Rock. Fishing is by trawl and fingers line.
Henrys Rock and roll. Five miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light. 1/4 mile in diameter, and 30
fathoms more than a level bottom. Minn Kota Endura is done by hand collection and trawl. Cod are
present the year close to, a few haddock from the fall, hake during the summer time but not in the
fall, and pollock in spring and drop.
Handspike Ground. Eight miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light, nearly spherical in form, and ? mile
across. It comes with a bottom of depths and rocks of from 35 to 40 fathoms. conditions and Species
are identical as on Lukes Rock, but mainly cod and pollock are taken here by hand and trawl line.
Western Egg Rock. This really is SW. from Moosabec Light, 8 mls distant, lying inside a NE. and SW.
direction, 3 miles long by 1 mile wide. The bottom isirregular and sharp, and rocky and has 25 to 30
fathoms. Minn Kota Endura here is mostly yourself line, the ground simply being said to be too hard
for trawling. It is a small-vessel ground, and sportfishing is done mainly during the summer time
season. Cod and pollock are consumed in thesummertime and spring, and fall; haddock can be found
in fall and spring; and cusk in 35 to 40 fathoms in fall and spring season. This is not a hake ground.
Old Ovum Rock. This rock is WSW. from Moosabec Light, 6 miles distant, and running in a NE. and
SW. course. It is 3 mls long by 1 mile wide; features a rocky depths and bottom of 25 to 30 fathoms.
This is also a small-boat ground, where minn kota endura is done mainly by hand lines, but trawls
also are employed. This ground is fished by the greater vessels in the fall months when the weather
conditions are too rough for minn kota endura on the outside grounds. , and a few pollock are taken
in spring and fall; hake in fair number in the fall months.Cod and haddock
Midst Ridge This is W. by S. from Moosabec Light 3 miles. It is in a NE. and SW. direction which is
about 1 mile long by ? distance wide. The depths are from 18 to 25 fathoms and also the bottom is
rough and rocky. It is actually a small-fishing boat ground mostly and of little importance like a
fishing ground. Cod are present the year about haddock in late summer and spring season with a
smaller quantity in the fall. Cusk are here the season around. A few pollock are here in the fall and
early spring.
Broken Ground. This lies S by E from Moosabec light, 15 mls, whence the ground extends WSW to
inside of 4 miles of Mount Desert Rock with an average size of 1 distance. The depths operate from
15 to 100 fathoms. The shallows are razor-sharp and rocky; the pea gravel, clay and deeps. There
are places ? mile long and others 3 miles long possessing depths of 70 fathoms. Several of these
spots have special names: Crawley's Rocks, Puzzling Rock, The Ridges. The grounds talked about
here and those earlier mentioned are known to the fishermen as the Moosabec Ridges. All these
seem to be minn kota endura spots cropping out upon the 50 fathom curve. On the Broken Ground
the minn kota endura season is from June 1 through September. Herring normally are abundant in
this article from May to September. Cod are taken outside of the reasons in fall and spring. Pollock
and small cod are taken on the shoals in summer and fall, and hake on the mud base in fall and
summer and hake on the mud underside in fall and summer.
Tibbetts' Ledge. This lies east from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Schoodic Island over
Natural Island of Petit Manan and the Ladle over Nash's Island. This ledge contains two rocky shoals
with depths of three to 3? fathoms, about one acre apiece in degree and 1/4 mile separate lying NW
and SE from each other. To the westward of such is broken floor nearly to Petit Manan. These are
beloved small-vessel grounds. The eastern ledge drops abruptly into the mud. In May large cod.
Make certain a person verify and keep your current boat’s fuel, fuel along with electrical
systems about a normal basisare caught within the muddy bottom just E of the ledge in 27 to 30
fathoms. Hake and haddock are taken in late spring (May) and tumble. Minn Kota Endura is by
fingers trawl and range.
Ben's Ground. Lies ESE from Petit Manan 4 or 5 a long way. The marks are Petit Manan Lighting to
northward of Middle Hill of Mount Desert and Humpback Mountain about the west side of Trafton's
Island or Pond Island Light-weight to the eastward of Jordan's Delight. The earth is circular fit,
about 3/4 mile over, having 14 to 30 fathoms water. The bottom is of mud and stones. This ground is
of little importance except as a little-boat floor in summer for haddock and cod. Hake are taken on
the muddy bottom part near it, It is actually a winter haddock soil in calm conditions, these fish
leaving behind it in the storms, the water being fairly too shallow to allow them to "ride out a blow"
in comfort, This kind of at least is the reason the fishermen give for the sudden cessation of their
taking on shoal grounds after a period of heavy weather.
Southeast Rock. This is a ledge, nearly uncovered at low tide on its shoalest place, SSE from Petit
Manan and 4? miles distant, The shoal portions slope toward the NE a distance of 4 miles around an
irregular base, Depths vary from 17 to 30 fathoms, The shoals are rocky, and the deeps are Cod,
muddy and haddock are used here in June and may even, hake from July to September, It is a good
lobster soil, also, Minn Kota Endura this is by handline and trawl operated from vessels and small
boats from in close proximity to-by Maine ports.
Broken Ridges aka Joe Roy Ground. This lies SSE from Petit Manan 7 mls to the center. It really is 2
miles long NE and SW and one mile wide and from 27 to 33 fathoms, and the bottom of mud and
rocks is very uneven, The shoalest portion is nearby the center. Some vessel fishing is carried on
here in the spring, though it is said as a good haddock and cod ground, and is also mainly a small
boat ground.
Black Ledges Ground. This ground lies between Jordan's Delight and the Halibut Ledges.
Alternatively, Dark Ledges. It is a great haddock ground for a brief season in the spring and early
summertime when the fish are following the herring colleges. In general it is a small-boat ground on
which chiefly palm lines and trawls are operated, A number of cod and cusk are taken here in the
fall, which is a good lobster terrain.
Bakers Island Ridge. This is a narrow ledge making out from Bakers Island E, by N. The eastern part
bears S. by E. from Schoodic Island 3/4 distance distant The ridge is much broken, its average width
becoming ? mile, and it has depths of from 20 to 25 fathoms over a rocky and gravelly bottom. In 30
to 35 fathoms, with a muddy bottom, hake are abundant from July to October, inclusive, although it
is really not much fished around the shoaler spots. Cod and cusk are located here in the fall and
spring; haddock from October to January, inclusive. Sport fishing here is done by small boats and
modest vessels mainly from Bass Harbor and Southwest Harbor by hand and trawl line. It is a
excellent lobster ground.
Martins Ground; Hillards Reef. The center bears WSW. from Schoodic Point, distant 3 miles. It is a
difficult patch of 4 to 5 acres and has depths of from 15 to 25 fathoms. It is not important with the
exception of its hand-lining for cod and haddock inside the fall and springtime months and for hake
in the fall. It really is a good lobster terrain.
Egg Rock Shattered Ground. This is a rocky ridge making out S. by W. from Egg Rock and roll
Ledges and is a couple of miles long by 14 miles wide. It has an unusual bottom, with depths from 9
to 15 fathoms. This ridge, with Martins and Seaveys Grounds, divides the traditional western or
Bakers Island mud channel from Schoodic mud route. Both these were formerly considered very
good hake grounds but, while still good, are certainly not as profitable for hake minn kota endura as
with past years. Haddock are taken on the ridge in the spring and then inNovember and October,
and December. A number of cod are consumed in the spring and fall. Fishing is simply by hand and
trawl line. It is a good lobster ground.
Interior Schoodic Ridge. This ridge bears SE. by S. from Bakers Island, the center distant 12 miles.
This ground is nearly circular in form, about 4 miles in size, and has depths running from 18 to 60
fathoms. The base is ofrocks and gravel, and mud; the shoaler portions are difficult and sharp.
Vessels from Maine plug-ins use this ground, minn kota endura by hand line and trawl. haddock and
Cod are abundant here in spring and fall, and hake fishing is good through the summer. It is a great
lobster ground.
Exterior Schoodic Ridge. The northwest part of this soil bears SE. from Bakers Island, from which it
is distant 22 miles. It is 7 miles outside Inner Schoodic, has long been considered one of the best
shoreline minn kota endura grounds of your Maine coast, but still seems to deserve the reputation.
The ridge is about 8 mls long in a NE. and SW. path, lying nearly parallel with the adjacent
coastline. Its greatest breadth is 6 kilometers. The bottom is cracked and irregular and it has depths
from 22 to 80 fathoms over gravel and rocks on the shoaler parts and mud on the deeps. Primarily
Maine vessels sea food this ground, employing hand line and trawl. Cod, haddock, pollock and cusk
and hake are present here from June to December, and a few large halibut, up to 300 weight in
weight, are taken here in June and July.
Attach Desert Outer Ridge. This ridge is placed SE. by E. from the Big Slope of Mount Desert Island.
From Schoodic Island to the core of this ground is about 25 miles. Its length E. by N. and W. by S, is
2 miles; its breadth 3/4 mile. Depths are from 45 to 60 fathoms; the shoals are rocky, but on the
sides sand and clay predominate. This is a comparatively tiny ground, but it furnishes good cod minn
kota endura in the spring (April to July) and fall. Cusk are consumed the spring and fall. Virtually no
haddock are taken in this article. Hake are based in the deep water in the W. and SW. insummer
time and spring, and fall; trawl outlines principally are used here. It is a good lobster ground but is
way too distant for provide minn kota endura methods.
Level Ground. This terrain lies between Install Desert and Swan Island, SW. from Long Island. In 50
fathoms, on the hard mud underside, there is good minn kota endura for hake during the summer.
Fishing is by fingers line and trawl.
Enoch's Shoal. This shoal lies ENE. 3 miles from Great Duck Island. This is a small hummock on the
outer areas of a ridge stretching out to it from Great Duck isle. It has a sharp, difficult bottom with
depths of about 18 fathoms. Hand lining and trawling are the methods employed to take a number of
cod in early spring; haddock are in small numbers in the summertime as well as a small volume of
hake. It is a great lobster ground.
Banking companies Ground. The
centre bears SE. by S. from Great
Duck Island, remote about 5
kilometers. It is about 1? miles long
within a NE. and SW. direction by 1/4
mile wide and has a mud bottom with
depths from 35 to 50 fathoms. It is
mainly a compact-boat terrain, fished
mostly during the summer time, when
hake are fairly abundant and there are
a few haddock and cod. It is a lobster
ground, also.
Casing Ground. This is SE. from Very long island Head, that the center of the ground is distant 6
miles. It is 2 mls long, in a NE. and SW. course and about ? mile wide. In the middle portion can be a
shoal of 25 fathoms, its bottom sharp rocks. On all sides of this shoal the bottom is quite abnormal,
consisting of pebbles and mud. The greatest level, near the edge of the lender, is 50 fathoms.
haddock and Cod, together with a few cusk and pollock, are taken here in June, July, and August and
even into the delayed fall, but it is generally a hake minn kota endura ground for little boats and an
the occasional larger craft, all using hand range and trawl. This is a good lobster ground.
Abner Ground. This ground is SSE. from Gott's Island,
distant 8 a long way. It extends 1? miles in a NE. and SW.
direction and is about 1/4 distance wide. The bottom is
damaged, mud and stones, with depths of from 25 to 50
fathoms. This can be principally a haddock ground, the
best time of year being in July and August, and is resorted
to mostly by small craft.
Grumpy. Extends from SE. 4? miles from Eastern Ear of
Isle au Haute to SE. 1/4 E. from the western head of Isle au Haute, distant 7 miles. This terrain is 2?
kilometers long by 3/4 distance wide and has a compact shoal of 14 fathoms on the northeast part.
Over the remainder of the ground the average depths run from 35 to 40 fathoms over a gravelly
base. Though not of great importance of later years, this was earlier considered one of the best
inshore grounds for cod for the entire year and also for haddock in winter. Hake usually are ample
just off the southeast edge in summer season. There is considerable hand-coating for cod in 25
fathoms in June and July, although this bank is mainly fished by craft from ports of eastern Maine-
-small boats as a rule--and the principal method is by trawling. Spots: Big Camden Mountain / hill
over the Eastern Hearing of Isle au Haute; Fog Tropical isle in Jericho Bay, touching on the eastern
part of Big Spoon Island; Brimstone involving Isle au Haute and the Western Ear canal.
Hatchell Ground. This ground lies SE. by E 3/4 E. 9? miles from your western head of Isle au Haute.
Marks are eastern Mount Desert Hillside in the Middle Saddle of Long island, and Little Spoon
Tropical isle in the great or center Saddle of Isle au Haute.
Blue Hill Ground. This ground is placed approximately E: by S. ? S from the western head of Isle au
Haute, distant 7 mls. The bottom consists of pea gravel and pebbles. Represents: Brimstone Island
out by the western head of Isle au Haute and Azure Hill on the west side of Marshall Island. These
represents lead to a depth of 25 fathoms in the northeast part of the floor, deepening southwest to
40 fathoms in 1 mile in the shoaler part, which can be about ? mile large, part of the ground,
deepening southwest to 40 fathoms in 1 mile from the shoaler part, which is about ? mile wide. This
is a good ground for cod in the spring and fall but is perfect for haddock during the whole winter.
Hand trawl and lines are used.
Inner Horse Reef. This reef lies SE. ? E 1? miles from the eastern ear of isle au Haute. You will
discover a shoal here of 25 fathoms about 1/8 mile in diameter. From this the water progressively
deepens to NE. for ? mile, in which it drops off of into the mud. Depths on this northeast section are
about 35 fathoms. The bottom is of pebbles and gravel. In slip and spring this is an excellent cod
ground. Hake are found close to the advantage in summer. Minn Kota Endura is by small art,
generally, using trawl and handline. It is a good lobster terrain. Marks: Bring Blue Hill Mountain
from the saddle of White Horse; Brimstone demonstrating between Western Isle and Ear au Haute.
Outer Horse Reef. This is a short distance SW. through the Inner Reef, with only a narrow gully
between. The small shoal falls off speedily on all sides. It features a depths of 30 fathoms. Over a
space 1/4 mile in size the bottom is gravelly. species and Seasons are as on Inner Horse Reef.
Hake Ground. The first brand because of the abundance of hake taken on this page during June, July,
and August, to the north of Monhegan tropical island lies a area called the Hake Floor or Mud Route.
It extends from just outside White Head to abreast of Monhegan Island on the upper side. The
depths vary from 20 to 45 fathoms, as well as the ground is still regarded as one of the best hake
reasons alongshore. It is fished by small vessels and vessels as soon as the dogfish are on the outer
grounds. This is an excellent haddock ground in December and Jan, as well as a good lobster ground.
Southwest Soil. This lies 2 miles SW. through the western head of Isle au Haute. It is circular in
form, ? mile in diameter and has a gravelly bottom with depths varying from 35 to 40 fathoms. It is a
cod ground from Apr to June and from September to November, inclusive. A few pollock and
haddock are taken using the cod. Hake are abundant in summer season close to Isle au Haute.
Handlines and trawls are used in the minn kota endura. It is also a great lobster ground.
Barley Hill Ground. This ground lies NNE. from Seal Tropical island and SSW through the western
head of Isle au Haute directly in line between the two, about 3? miles distant from each position. It is
circular in form, has 28 to 30 fathoms of water, and the http://maine.gov/ifw/fishing/index.htm base
is mixed stones and mud. This really is a ground much resorted to by sloops and larger vessels, and
the minn kota endura is simply by hand line and trawls. It is a good cod ground in spring and tumble
and a hake floor on the mud and rocks in summer time. Occasionally a few halibut are taken in this
article during July and June. It is also a lobster ground.
Gilkey Ground. This bears S. from the european head of Isle au Haute. 4 miles distant. It extends
ENE. and WSW about 1? miles long by 1/3 mile wide. The bottom is rocky around the shoals where
depths are about 23 fathoms sloping to 35 fathoms on the southwest part., the location where the
bottom is gravelly and comparatively smooth.
Rock Cod Ledge. This ledge lies NE. of Close Island 1 distance. It has a depth of 3? fathoms on the
shoalest part, deepening gradually on all sides to get a considerable distance. The base is of razor-
sharp rocks and is damaged in places. Rock cod area within fair numbers in fall and early spring,
and this is a herring and mackerel ground in their seasons. Haddock are abundant from the fall close
into the rocks of Seal off Island in 6 to 15 fathoms. This is not a hake ground, although there are
some cusk to be had on this page on the deeper pieces and an occasional tiny halibut is consumed in
the kelp in the shoal in June and July. It is a excellent lobster ground.
Pea gravel Southeast and Bottom part Ground. These lie S. of Close off Island. forming a substantial
piece of fairly degree ground extensive part of fairly level soil. The western that bears a little E. of S.
and the eastern part about ESE. from the tropical isle. It is about 5 or 10 mls in diameter. Although
this is really but one piece of ground, the eastern part is called the Southeast Ground along with the
western part, through the nature of its underside.
The Gravel Base. The eastern portion is muddy and contains 40 to 60 fathoms. The european has 35
to 40 fathoms. It is actually a good cod soil in winter and spring. Haddock can be found from
November to March, inclusive; hake in summer. Minn Kota Endura is done mainly by trawling by
sloops and vessels.
Laisdells Ground. This is a little, rocky spot away from Brandy Ledges. It is actually about 1/4 acre in
extent and has a sharp rocky base with 20 fathoms of water over it. It is the best haddock and cod
floor in Isle au Haute Bay. This is chiefly a small boat ground and is also a lobster ground.
Saddleback Reef. This reef lies S. from Saddle-back Ledge, 3/4 mile remote. It is about 2/3 mile
lengthy S and N by 1/4 mile broad. Depths are from 15 to 35 fathoms over a broken and rocky
bottom. Cod are taken on this page by hand line in May and June; haddock and cod by trawling in
tumble and winter (December to January 1). It is a good lobster ground and chiefly a small-
motorboat ground.
Otter Island Reef; Snipper Shin; Western Reef. These are generally names applied to various
sections of an unusual, broken piece of rocky ground about halfway between Vinalhaven and Seal
Island. Otter Island Reef is definitely the eastern section, being untruthful 4 miles W. by S. by 1/4 S.
from the traditional western head of Isle au Haute. Depths here are from 10 to 25 fathoms over a
rocky base. The trawl, formerly not much used on this page, is now in general use. This is a cod and
haddock ground at seasons when these fish are in shoal water, but it is perfect for cod in winter and
spring and for haddock in the fall, from November 1 to January 1.
Aged Ripper. This is S. from the Western Ground (Western Reef) and 10 mls WSW. from Criehaven
or Ragged Tropical isle. Apparently this is an element of the Western Ground. In the deep-drinking
water mud bottom among these (Ripper and Western Reef) is great hake minn kota endura in
summer, and cusk are abundant from May to the time when the dogfish attack the ground, usually
about July 5 to 10.
Crie Ridges. These lay 4 miles NW. from Matinicus Rock and roll, 4 miles WSW. from Criehaven or
Ragged Island, and run SE. from Western Ground in the direction of Matinicus, distant 4? to 5 a long
way. Cod, pollock, and cusk are right here in the spring, and haddock are abundant from the fall.
Bald Ridges. These begin just outside Wooden Ball Island and manage off in a nearly direct line for
Matinicus Rock. They are each from 1/4 to ? mile wide, can be close together, the distances between
them getting not over ? distance, and they are almost parallel with each other. Engine Maintenance
• Don’t permit oil or even debris build-up
in the bilges.
• Inspect the actual lagging associated with engine
and heater exhausts regarding
damage along with deterioration and
nearby objects pertaining to heat damage
or charring.
• Verify exhaust systems associated with
inboard engines for leaks.
• check regarding free gasoline joints,
damaged gasoline tanks or
deteriorating hoses.Soundings display from 15 to 30 fathoms on them, with a shattered, rocky
bottom. The shoalest water is around 1 mile from Wooden Ball Isle, the depth improving toward the
southern end.
Henry Marshalls Ground. This floor lies S. by W. from Matinicus Rock about 3 miles; its place is
about 2 acres. The shoaler segment has a depth of 35 fathoms and a gravelly bottom; in the edge the
level is 45 fathoms and the bottom is of rocks and mud. Cod are taken here early in the year,
haddock in Jan and February, and hake in the summer a few months. It is a good lobster ground.
The Bounties (The Bowdies). This ground bears SE. by S ? S distant 6 a long way from Wooden Ball
Island. It is virtually circular in kind, about 4 miles across, and has depths from 40 to 60 fathoms.
The bottom, of gravel and rocks, is somewhat cracked. It is a good cod and cusk floor in spring and
fall and a haddock ground in winter which is fished by vessels and sloops, primarily by trawling
although with a certain amount of hand coating, in May and June. A summer hake ground extends
from 3 miles ESE. of Seal Isle to 4 miles SSE of the Wooden Ball, thus it is all about 7? miles long by
some 2? miles wide. The depths here are from 35 to 60 fathoms.
Summer Hake Ground. A summer time hake ground runs from 8 miles SE. of the eastern Ear of Isle
au Haute to 3 miles SE. of Long Island in 35 to 60 fathoms with a bottom of tough mud. This bit of
ground is about 15 miles long by 4 miles wide.
Minerva Hub. This bears SSE. from Matinicus Rock, remote 6 miles. This is a small, gravelly spot
about 1/4 mile in diameter and with a depth of 35 fathoms, abounding with cod in spring season and
fall. This is a summer ground for hake and cusk. Hand lines and trawls are used.

Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04

  • 1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 04 The fish of these shore grounds, due perhaps to the greater great quantity of food right here, are thought to be distinctly superior in good quality to those of the same kinds taken on the offshore banks. The cod and the haddock, particularly, of the Gulf of Maine are notably well conditioned sea food and are noted for their excellence. The statistics presented in Kitchen table 2 show only a fraction of the capture from the Inner Grounds, since they deal fully with the fares of minn kota endura vessels of 5 net lots and over. There are thousands of the so-called "certified" or "under-tonned" boats, primarily gill-netters, that take numerous pounds from these seas annually, principally cod and haddock. In the Maine coast and across the line in New Brunswick there are other than 300 weirs which furnished to American canners and smokers during the year 1923 (whose figures have been chosen as which represents an average season) 77,000,000 weight of herring. About the coast of Massachusetts there are 50 or even more fish and weirs traps, and through the Isle of Shoals to Pemaquid Point in Maine there are more than 50 floating traps in the various bays, on the points of offshore islands, or even in the open ocean, and all these take a rich harvest from these waters. , there is the lobster fishery, more important from the Gulf of Maine than anywhere else in the states. Then and way too Of those various branches of the fisheries industries handful of statistics are available, yet we may say that the figures of the 1919 census showed that the "under-ton" vessels mentioned landed 5,324,426 lbs of fish with the port of Boston, mostly of cod and haddock, and therefore the same type of create in 1923 landed at Portland, Me., more than 3,000,000 pounds, primarily of ground seafood. We also know that each and every small town, town, island and hamlet and city along this nearly 4,000 'miles of coast line takes its toll from the sea. Lukes Rock. This rock is placed S. by E. 3 miles from Moosabec Light, spherical in shape, and about 1 mile in size. Depths are from 25 to 35 fathoms; the bottom isrocks and gravel, and mud. There is some vessel fishing, though this is mainly a small-boat fishing floor. Hake are considered here from June to September, inclusive; cod are present concerning the rocks the year about. Pollock are within spring and drop, and haddock from December to Feb, inclusive. Minn Kota Endura is simply by trawl and fingers line. Newfound Soil. A small rocky location about 1/4 mile all over with an automatic buoy in the center for guidance into the Bay of Fundy. This is a small-fishing boat ground having depths averaging 18 fathoms. It lies about 3 miles S. by W. from Moosabec Light. months and Species are as on Lukes Rock. Fishing is by trawl and fingers line. Henrys Rock and roll. Five miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light. 1/4 mile in diameter, and 30 fathoms more than a level bottom. Minn Kota Endura is done by hand collection and trawl. Cod are present the year close to, a few haddock from the fall, hake during the summer time but not in the fall, and pollock in spring and drop. Handspike Ground. Eight miles SW. by S. from Moosabec Light, nearly spherical in form, and ? mile across. It comes with a bottom of depths and rocks of from 35 to 40 fathoms. conditions and Species are identical as on Lukes Rock, but mainly cod and pollock are taken here by hand and trawl line.
  • 2. Western Egg Rock. This really is SW. from Moosabec Light, 8 mls distant, lying inside a NE. and SW. direction, 3 miles long by 1 mile wide. The bottom isirregular and sharp, and rocky and has 25 to 30 fathoms. Minn Kota Endura here is mostly yourself line, the ground simply being said to be too hard for trawling. It is a small-vessel ground, and sportfishing is done mainly during the summer time season. Cod and pollock are consumed in thesummertime and spring, and fall; haddock can be found in fall and spring; and cusk in 35 to 40 fathoms in fall and spring season. This is not a hake ground. Old Ovum Rock. This rock is WSW. from Moosabec Light, 6 miles distant, and running in a NE. and SW. course. It is 3 mls long by 1 mile wide; features a rocky depths and bottom of 25 to 30 fathoms. This is also a small-boat ground, where minn kota endura is done mainly by hand lines, but trawls also are employed. This ground is fished by the greater vessels in the fall months when the weather conditions are too rough for minn kota endura on the outside grounds. , and a few pollock are taken in spring and fall; hake in fair number in the fall months.Cod and haddock Midst Ridge This is W. by S. from Moosabec Light 3 miles. It is in a NE. and SW. direction which is about 1 mile long by ? distance wide. The depths are from 18 to 25 fathoms and also the bottom is rough and rocky. It is actually a small-fishing boat ground mostly and of little importance like a fishing ground. Cod are present the year about haddock in late summer and spring season with a smaller quantity in the fall. Cusk are here the season around. A few pollock are here in the fall and early spring. Broken Ground. This lies S by E from Moosabec light, 15 mls, whence the ground extends WSW to inside of 4 miles of Mount Desert Rock with an average size of 1 distance. The depths operate from 15 to 100 fathoms. The shallows are razor-sharp and rocky; the pea gravel, clay and deeps. There are places ? mile long and others 3 miles long possessing depths of 70 fathoms. Several of these spots have special names: Crawley's Rocks, Puzzling Rock, The Ridges. The grounds talked about here and those earlier mentioned are known to the fishermen as the Moosabec Ridges. All these seem to be minn kota endura spots cropping out upon the 50 fathom curve. On the Broken Ground the minn kota endura season is from June 1 through September. Herring normally are abundant in this article from May to September. Cod are taken outside of the reasons in fall and spring. Pollock and small cod are taken on the shoals in summer and fall, and hake on the mud base in fall and summer and hake on the mud underside in fall and summer. Tibbetts' Ledge. This lies east from Petit Manan 4 or 5 miles. The marks are Schoodic Island over Natural Island of Petit Manan and the Ladle over Nash's Island. This ledge contains two rocky shoals with depths of three to 3? fathoms, about one acre apiece in degree and 1/4 mile separate lying NW and SE from each other. To the westward of such is broken floor nearly to Petit Manan. These are beloved small-vessel grounds. The eastern ledge drops abruptly into the mud. In May large cod. Make certain a person verify and keep your current boat’s fuel, fuel along with electrical systems about a normal basisare caught within the muddy bottom just E of the ledge in 27 to 30 fathoms. Hake and haddock are taken in late spring (May) and tumble. Minn Kota Endura is by fingers trawl and range. Ben's Ground. Lies ESE from Petit Manan 4 or 5 a long way. The marks are Petit Manan Lighting to northward of Middle Hill of Mount Desert and Humpback Mountain about the west side of Trafton's Island or Pond Island Light-weight to the eastward of Jordan's Delight. The earth is circular fit, about 3/4 mile over, having 14 to 30 fathoms water. The bottom is of mud and stones. This ground is of little importance except as a little-boat floor in summer for haddock and cod. Hake are taken on the muddy bottom part near it, It is actually a winter haddock soil in calm conditions, these fish leaving behind it in the storms, the water being fairly too shallow to allow them to "ride out a blow" in comfort, This kind of at least is the reason the fishermen give for the sudden cessation of their
