Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10
It seems to not be frequented much in the winter months, though apparently there is no reason why
this should not be an all-the-calendar year minn kota elements ground. It furnishes, even so, a very
good summer handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring weeks it abounds in cod,
cusk, and hake, all minn kota components of big size.
Roseway Bank. This bank is placed N. from the western part of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne
Light, Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy off Lockport, Nova Scotia, for the
southeastern benefit. It is oblong in shape as well as small degree--about 270 square geographic
miles. Its greatest size is 21 miles and its particular greatest breadth 15 kilometers. It runs from 43?
12' to 43? 33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' to the west longitude and at the north west
corner is connected with the shore restrict of 60 fathoms from a narrow neck. Depths are from 33 to
48 fathoms. The bottom is ofgravel and sand, and rocks; in the Northeast Maximum the bottom is of
discolored mud and gravel.
The push and direction of both of them are much relying on the winds, although currents in this
region usually are not nearly so strong as about Cape Browns and Sable Bank, their general route
being WSW. and ENE the westerly much the stronger.
Hake, pollock and halibut occur, the ideal fishing months being from Might to October, when the
lender is resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia, although the principal seafood considered
here arehaddock and cod, and cusk. Several New England craft also fish here.
Los angeles Have Banking institution. Situated eastward of Browns S and Banking institution. and E.
of Roseway Bank. It extends from 42? 34' to 43? 26' to the north latitude a distance of 52 kilometers,
and from 63? 50' to 65? 07' west longitude a distance of about 54 mls. The bank is almost divided
into two portions, of which the eastern (La Have Bank suitable) extends N and S. 39 mls and the
traditional western portion almost E. and W. about 35 kilometers. The total part of the bank is all
about 1,200 miles.
The base is largely coarsegravel and pebbles, and rock and roll, with smaller areas of fine sand
distributed from time to time. Depths work from 40 to 50 fathoms. The general set of the currents is
to the westward, but this can be much influenced by the pressure and path of the wind flow and is
generally quite strong during easterly blows.
The principal minn kota components upon this bank before has been for haddock and cod: and while
former reports, (1881) speak of this as experiencing once been a favorite sportfishing floor for
halibut and state that it was not at time of great importance and importance in this fishery, the
figures for this ground for your year 1923 show the halibut get to have been third in volume and first
in value of the species used there. The truth is, the capture of halibut here helps make quite an
imposing body when the somewhat small measurements of the ground is regarded as.
Little Los angeles Have and the La Have Ridges are just continuations on this back toward the
American Bank for a distance of approximately 45 a long way. This spots the eastern limit in about
62? 50' west longitude, the upper and southern boundaries being about as those of La Have
Financial institution. The section of the ridges is approximately 1,575 miles. The bottom here is a
succession of ridges of gravel and pebbles with occasional sections of stones. Depths are from 53 to
80 fathoms. The current, sometimes strong, is weaker on this page than even farther W. around the
bank and, except while in easterly winds, is but little observed. The general established is westerly.
"The Ridges" says the report just before mentioned, "were for several years among the favorite
accommodations for halibut catchers in the winter months, and many great catches of cod were
taken at that season. At present but few halibut are caught except inside the deep water along the
southern edge of the ground, where they sometimes have been discovered quite plentiful during
virtually the entire 12 months." Seemingly there is not much change in these conditions since the
writer's time; sea food are most often present within about the same volumes as in past years.
A single piece of bottom, having depths of 25 to 50 fathoms above red clay-based, lying around in
43? 08' to 43? 10' north latitude and about 81? to 83? west longitude, seems an effective spring and
early summer ground. Evidently red-clay bottom part indicates an excellent halibut floor, as this
types is usually current where this kind of bottom is found.
Hake are found in very good numbers within the deep normal water about the corners of the terrain
and even around the Ridges.
These waters can be heavily fished from Canadian ports, and a fair quantity of American vessels visit
them each year, many of them hailing from Boston or Gloucester.
Scandinavian Bank. Eighteen miles SSW. from Shelbourne Light. Nova Scotia. It is about 3 miles
extended in an E. and W. direction by about ? distance wide. On the whole, the bottom is level, with
depths from 50 to 70 fathoms; the shoal parts are rocky and sharp, the bottom across the deeper
amounts being created mostly of small black and yellow pebbles.
This is a summer halibut ground (August and July) in depths from 45 to 60 fathoms, and halibut
occur in October in the further waters regarding it. It is also a decent summer cod ground, and cusk
can be found in the deeply water in regards to the edges throughout most of the year. In standard,
seasons and species tend to be as on Roseway.
Traditional western Bank. This is one of the most significant fishing grounds from the western
Atlantic, whether as regards sizing or the great quantity of its product or service. It is placed S. of
Cape Breton Island as well as the eastern a part of Nova Scotia between the parallels of 42? 44 and
55'? 46' northern latitude as well as the meridians of 59? 62 and 04'? 35' west longitude. It has a
duration of 156 a long way and a thickness, including the Midsection Ground, of 76 mls. It is about
420 mls E. ? S. from Boston to the southwestern edge, which means about 48 hours' steaming for
the otter-trawl fleet.
The normal contour of the bank within the 65-fathom range, as laid down on the Admiralty chart,
approaches considerably a very elongated ellipse, the more time axis operating NE. by E. and SW.
by W.; but over a broad area to eastward of the center of your budget, soundings of less than 50
fathoms connect it directly with all the Middle Floor, which we now have here included in the some
financial institution. The total degree of the financial institution thus described is about 7,000 sq .
geographical miles. Off its eastern stop lies Banquereau (the Quereau of the fishermen) with The
Gully between, along with a short extended distance of the american edge are the La Have Ridges.
The depths minnkota parts from the southern edge of the bank increase rapidly from 80 to700 and
1,200, as well as 1,400 fathoms. At the eastern end is Sable Island, [16] "graveyard of ships", aslim
and long, crescent-shaped height seemingly lessening in place each year, formed entirely of sand
which has been blown Into innumerable hummocks and dunes. Away from both stops of the isle are
very long and dangerous sand bars. The length of the island is 20 a long way; its greatest width is
approximately 1? a long way. It is said how the Northwest Light-weight has been relocated three
times due to the fact that the american end of your island continues to be literally mesmerised. It is
in an E. and W. direction, along with the depth of water over the bars for a extended distance of 7 to
10 miles out does not exceed 2 fathoms, and even 10 miles farther out the depths do not go over 10
to 11 fathoms. Within recent years fishermen have reported the appearance of a sand shoal about 5
or 6 a long way SE. in the Northeast Light-weight. This is thought to appear at low water.
In general, your budget slopes S. and W. from the tropical isle, depths which range from 18 to 60
fathoms. The bottom is usually sandy with patches of pebbles and gravel. Currents are occasionally
very strong about Sable Island and are fairly irregular; apparently they are much influenced by the
winds. On the other parts of your bank typically there is but little recent, whatever there may be
usually tending toward the west.
Previously the cod and halibut were the food fishes most taken on this page, but with the changed
techniques in the fishery (as the growth of the otter-trawl fleet) and a changed flavor in our general
public the haddock catch has become the second most significant in the invoices of species of fish
from these waters. The halibut fishery stands next in the collection. Other underside feeders appear
in less amounts, the pollock and the cusk perhaps being next to be able of significance, with hake
and a considerable amount of the various flatfishes in the otter trawls. These latter are marketed as
sole.
Remembering the small amount of haddock in the fares taken from these waters in past years, the
writer asked a variety of old-time fishermen as to its abundance in the old days. The response was
normally yes and Oh, there were always haddock there; often they concerned us a whole lot." Then,
noting my surprise at so placing it, "You know, the haddock isn't much like a salt species of fish."
Not too valuable proportionately, though it will likely be noted that in 1923 the haddock catch on
this page was a really good second towards the cod catch in poundage. In the otter-trawl catch out
of this ground it will be noted that this positions of the two species are reversed. These steamers
certainly take more than 2 pounds of haddock to 1 of cod on other offshore grounds--possibly the
result of running in the shoaler waters and on the easier bottom due to difficulty of dragging on the
rocky and kelp-covered terrain, which the cod seems to choose, as a rule. Nevertheless the bottom
about the Western Bank is of the nature concerning offer small obstruction on the passage of the
net, in order that virtually all parts of it may be fished by this method; and this, put into the
acknowledged movements of your cod schools makes it feasible at a number of seasons of the year
to catch a larger proportion with this species if it is so preferred.
Haddock are found about the bars at both comes to an end of the isle in Mar and from that time to
around June 1 in from 15 to 22 fathoms. They are also ample 18 a long way W. from the Northwest
Light at the same seasons and at the same depths. DuringCould and April, and June they come in
next to the island in from 10 to 17 fathoms--even going to 1 fathom. Through the other year (with the
exception of the cooler months, if they have moved away from into greater water) they may be found
everywhere in the bank on sandy bottom in 28 to 30 fathoms, where by most of the beam trawl
sportfishing is carried on.
There exists a good cod school each and every year on the comparatively level underside along the
southwestern and western ends of the floor in 70 fathoms and a lot more from Feb 1 to May 1, and
in most years some this kinds is adopted this area. In May this school appears to have moved on to a
piece of base about 20 miles lengthy lying SW. from the Northwest Light and achieving depths
averaging 27 fathoms. With fair fishing for cod on the European Bank throughout most of the year,
they seem to be most abundant in the first of March to June. The wintertime school right here
appears to be smaller compared to that on Georges, but apparently this species trips this terrain in
considerable numbers in the spawning year. During winter the cod are mainly found upon the
western portion of the bank, stepping into the shoaler waters towards Sable Isle as the spring
season advances (in the course of March and April), the "Bend" of your island and also the
neighborhood of your bars in 2 to 4 fathoms, where they are often seen using the hook or can be
"jigged." being favorite grounds. The ground lying W. from the Northwest Light, about and on the
North west Bar (18 miles W, from the light-weight), is a favorite cod ground in June and might. The
shoal water on the rocky underside WNW from the Northwest Gentle furnishes very good cod minn
kota parts from June 10 to July 1. This piece starts just outside the 3-mile stretch of breakers
running outside the land and extends overseas in a generally westerly path to 24 fathoms.
Significantly hand-lining is completed here.
From the shoal h2o, in April and May, the fish seem to be giving on the "lant," (Ammodytes
americanus). It is said that this fish taken on the bottom close to the tropical isle are small compared
to those located farther western. The shoal water from the northern shore of the island is said to get
good cod grounds and favorite spots for "dory hand-upholster." The cod educational institutions
seem to show up on the Northern Peak (SE. from the Northeast Light 40 miles to SE ? S. from same
point 28 miles) in late March and also the first of April, moving N. and W. on the island. The cod of
Sable Tropical island are said to be fine, organization fish, perhaps due to abundance from the
"reddish clams" (bank clams) on these grounds.
The cod and haddock fishery is carried on by American and Canadian sailing otter and vessels
trawlers, a lot more English and French http://mdc.mo.gov/fishing vessels of the latter class
undertaking the fishery of this soil each year.
Halibut are found on the Western Banking institution virtually all the season at depths varying with
all the seasons. Like a halibut bank, this, with all the Gully and Quereau--the truth is, all one piece of
ground--ranks secondly only to the Grand Bank Itself. The ideal fishing here for halibut is found from
January to October. There are various places on and about the bank that the halibut seems to
choose, as the Optimum of Pike, 85 a long way W. by S. in the Northwest Light-weight of Sable
Island; S. and SW. of Sable Island from 12 to 38 miles; SW. 20 miles in 60 fathoms in May possibly;
thence out into 150 and 100 fathoms in June; in fact, after the 100--fathom curve over the edge of
this bank, beyond the Northeast Optimum (40 a long way SE. from your Northeast Lighting), into the
Gully and around the The southern part of Prong of Quereau towards the Middle Prong. Apparently
they leave this piece of base in July. Where the normal water is so shoal that they can be observed
taking the bait or tinkering with the catch before taking, usually the minn kota components are close
to the island in the spring. InApr and May, and June a good halibut ground is at 18 fathoms 24 miles
WNW. from Sable Island.
The European Bank is apparently a good serving ground for cod and halibut mainly because it
abounds in shellfish and crustaceans, as well as certain times there are many small species of minn
kota parts after it, such as the lant and herring, on what these species and the haddock, also,
specially prey. Plenty of swordfish is taken here in August and September, mainly by American
vessels.
Banquereau. Segregated from the Western Bank from the Gully, it has a very unnatural form--the
main bank close to rectangular, having a narrow westerly extension of comparatively typical form.
Its length, E. and W., is about 120 miles, its greatest width about 47 miles, as well as its total
location about 2,800 miles.
The main portion of the bank lies in between 44? 45 and 04'? 01' north latitude and 67? 10' and 59?
00' western longitude, and the western prolongation lies involving 44? 24' and 44? 42' north latitude
and 69? 80 and 00'? 05' western longitude. Northern of Banquereau lies Artimon, distant 3 miles,
and Misaine, remote from 2 to 15 miles in accordance with the places from where measurements are
taken. The currents here are of diverse force, very much influenced by the wind, to ensure several
days of strong tides may be followed by intervals should there be little if any present.
Around the eastern part of Quereau is surely an area of shoal ground referred to as Rocky Bottom,
having a range of about 18 fathoms; elsewhere depths work from 18 to 50 fathoms. There are
scattered spots of sand and pea gravel, even though typically the bottom is rocky.
Cod and halibut are the main food fish hake, haddock and taken and cusk being taken in small
numbers. The Difficult Bottom, a shoal soil of 20 to 25 fathom depths on the eastern part, was much
resorted to by dory handliners in summertime. Occasional very good fares are taken towards the
western, even though the cod are most plentiful about the eastern portion of the bank. The very best
cod angling on this bank comes from May until finally September, if the schools gather to feed with
the lant, squid, crustaceans, and shellfish, then really abundant.
Halibut are found on this page all the 12 months off the edges in 100 to 400 fathoms. Seemingly
these are providing and breeding grounds for this species, and it is not unusual for any school to
keep for weeks and even weeks in one area, though a few of these may be minn kota parts in
migration northward.
The principal halibut reasons are down the eastern and the southern part of borders of your bank-
-the Southwest Prong and the Southwest Cove (within 44? N. lat. and between 58? 30' and 58? 55'
W. long), the center Prong (44? 14' N. lat. and 58? W. long.), along with the Eastern Slope (44? 28'
to 45? 00' N. lat.)--in depths of 150 to 400 fathoms. These serious-water areas are rocky and support
a really rich growth and development ofcorals and gorgonians, sea anemones, etc. The Eastern
Slope has an abundance of bank clams in depths of 25 fathoms. These beds are perfect hand-line
grounds for cod. The halibut, too, rss feeds to. Minn Kota is the oldest company regarding electric
fishing motors in the world together with nearly 70 many years of hard-earned experience.a
considerable extent with these reddish clams.
The Stone Fencing off the eastern slope of Quereau is certainly a rocky bit of ground packed with
"trees" (corals) in 250 fathoms. This is a great halibut ground although it is nearly impossible to haul
the gear by hand and using the "gurdy" (a roller turned from a crank and fastened to the dory's bow
for winding up the trawl) becomes necessary. Occasional fares of halibut are taken on and about the
Rocky Bottom part in 20 to 25 fathoms from July 1 to August 1.
The Gully. This is basically the deep waterway between Banquereau and Sable Island or Western
Bank. It stretches in an WNW. and an ESE. direction north of Sable Island, transforming somewhat
unexpectedly S. at its eastern end and continuing lower between the eastern end of Western Lender
and the South west Prong of Banquereau. The entire length is around 80 mls, the greatest thickness
about 20 miles. Depths range from 68 to 145 fathoms spanning a bottom of gravel, rocks and beach
sand and mud. The difficult and gravelly portions develop several ridges separated by areas of better
materials, apart from in the eastern section, where intervals in between are mostly covered by
pebbles and sharp stones. Ocean currents are generally westerly, of varying strength, a lot affected
by the easterly winds.
The Gully is a very important halibut floor. The halibut are not present in great amounts all over the
ground, perhaps the very best of the fishing simply being on the difficult and gravelly slopes and
ridges included between the meridians of 69? and 80? western longitude. This rocky base is rich in
food, as well as the lant and herring are generally plentiful within their period. In the spring the
halibut appear to be especially numerous in the northern and northwestern aspects of the bank,
afterwards, in June and July, moving further out. Some, are found within winter. Engine
Maintenance
• Don’t permit oil or even debris build-up
in the actual bilges.
• Inspect the particular lagging regarding engine
and heater exhausts regarding
damage and deterioration as well as
nearby objects pertaining to heat damage
or charring.
• Verify exhaust techniques regarding
inboard engines for leaks.
• check regarding loose fuel joints,
damaged gasoline tanks or perhaps
deteriorating hoses.Even though the cod may also be found in The Gully in 60 to 90 fathoms, it can
do not are of regular occurrence; and apparently there are almost no haddock here, possibly
because of the level of the h2o and the character of the base.
Artimon Bank. Posseses an area of some 120 rectangular miles using a bottom of stones and pea
gravelrocks and depths of 38 to 50 fathoms. It can be but little known because of the habit of the
anglers to use the larger grounds close at hand. Cod are known to be present on this page, however.
The lender lies N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated from this by a thin, deep-water station.
Misaine Lender. In general banking institutions are divided by some 20 mls of deeply water, though
lies N. of the european two-thirds of Quereau, at one spot very in close proximity to. Its best length
is 80 mls and its greatest width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms more than a bottom
shattered and rocky. A few halibut trips are landed from it in most several years, even though it is
not of much value as a sport fishing soil.
Canso Lender. A long, narrow extension of Misaine Bank, lying in an E, and W. course; its span is 45
miles and its greatest thickness 13 mls, its location being about 425 square miles. Depths range
from 30 to 65 fathoms across a bottom of sand, with spots of gravel and pebbles. More fished by
vessels from Nova Scotia; possibly it is overshadowed by the existence of its larger sized Quereau,
neighbors and Western Banks, in which grounds it forms essentially one piece of bottom, only
narrow, deeply-normal water channels splitting them, even though it is not of much importance
being a fishing ground, particularly as judged by the use of it by the United states fleet. These larger
reasons are heavily fished the two by Us vessels and through those from Nova Scotia ports as well as
by French and English otter trawlers.
The statistics given right here and somewhere else within this report are taken from the published
bulletins of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include simply the landings of vessels of 5
plenty net, or older, at the ports of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me.

showing Sable Tropical isle, feared and dreaded by all fishermen even in those days, in which he
called it "Santa Cruz." Jacamo Gastaldi, an Italian cartographer, in 1548 shows it "Isolla de
Industry." Sir Humphrey Gilbert or his historian, says that the Portuguese had manufactured an
interesting resolution here for shipwrecked mariners. This, "Upon intelligence we had of a Portugal

Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10

  • 1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10 It seems to not be frequented much in the winter months, though apparently there is no reason why this should not be an all-the-calendar year minn kota elements ground. It furnishes, even so, a very good summer handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring weeks it abounds in cod, cusk, and hake, all minn kota components of big size. Roseway Bank. This bank is placed N. from the western part of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne Light, Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy off Lockport, Nova Scotia, for the southeastern benefit. It is oblong in shape as well as small degree--about 270 square geographic miles. Its greatest size is 21 miles and its particular greatest breadth 15 kilometers. It runs from 43? 12' to 43? 33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' to the west longitude and at the north west corner is connected with the shore restrict of 60 fathoms from a narrow neck. Depths are from 33 to 48 fathoms. The bottom is ofgravel and sand, and rocks; in the Northeast Maximum the bottom is of discolored mud and gravel. The push and direction of both of them are much relying on the winds, although currents in this region usually are not nearly so strong as about Cape Browns and Sable Bank, their general route being WSW. and ENE the westerly much the stronger. Hake, pollock and halibut occur, the ideal fishing months being from Might to October, when the lender is resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia, although the principal seafood considered here arehaddock and cod, and cusk. Several New England craft also fish here. Los angeles Have Banking institution. Situated eastward of Browns S and Banking institution. and E. of Roseway Bank. It extends from 42? 34' to 43? 26' to the north latitude a distance of 52 kilometers, and from 63? 50' to 65? 07' west longitude a distance of about 54 mls. The bank is almost divided into two portions, of which the eastern (La Have Bank suitable) extends N and S. 39 mls and the traditional western portion almost E. and W. about 35 kilometers. The total part of the bank is all about 1,200 miles. The base is largely coarsegravel and pebbles, and rock and roll, with smaller areas of fine sand distributed from time to time. Depths work from 40 to 50 fathoms. The general set of the currents is to the westward, but this can be much influenced by the pressure and path of the wind flow and is generally quite strong during easterly blows. The principal minn kota components upon this bank before has been for haddock and cod: and while former reports, (1881) speak of this as experiencing once been a favorite sportfishing floor for halibut and state that it was not at time of great importance and importance in this fishery, the figures for this ground for your year 1923 show the halibut get to have been third in volume and first in value of the species used there. The truth is, the capture of halibut here helps make quite an imposing body when the somewhat small measurements of the ground is regarded as. Little Los angeles Have and the La Have Ridges are just continuations on this back toward the American Bank for a distance of approximately 45 a long way. This spots the eastern limit in about 62? 50' west longitude, the upper and southern boundaries being about as those of La Have Financial institution. The section of the ridges is approximately 1,575 miles. The bottom here is a succession of ridges of gravel and pebbles with occasional sections of stones. Depths are from 53 to 80 fathoms. The current, sometimes strong, is weaker on this page than even farther W. around the
  • 2. bank and, except while in easterly winds, is but little observed. The general established is westerly. "The Ridges" says the report just before mentioned, "were for several years among the favorite accommodations for halibut catchers in the winter months, and many great catches of cod were taken at that season. At present but few halibut are caught except inside the deep water along the southern edge of the ground, where they sometimes have been discovered quite plentiful during virtually the entire 12 months." Seemingly there is not much change in these conditions since the writer's time; sea food are most often present within about the same volumes as in past years. A single piece of bottom, having depths of 25 to 50 fathoms above red clay-based, lying around in 43? 08' to 43? 10' north latitude and about 81? to 83? west longitude, seems an effective spring and early summer ground. Evidently red-clay bottom part indicates an excellent halibut floor, as this types is usually current where this kind of bottom is found. Hake are found in very good numbers within the deep normal water about the corners of the terrain and even around the Ridges. These waters can be heavily fished from Canadian ports, and a fair quantity of American vessels visit them each year, many of them hailing from Boston or Gloucester. Scandinavian Bank. Eighteen miles SSW. from Shelbourne Light. Nova Scotia. It is about 3 miles extended in an E. and W. direction by about ? distance wide. On the whole, the bottom is level, with depths from 50 to 70 fathoms; the shoal parts are rocky and sharp, the bottom across the deeper amounts being created mostly of small black and yellow pebbles. This is a summer halibut ground (August and July) in depths from 45 to 60 fathoms, and halibut occur in October in the further waters regarding it. It is also a decent summer cod ground, and cusk can be found in the deeply water in regards to the edges throughout most of the year. In standard, seasons and species tend to be as on Roseway. Traditional western Bank. This is one of the most significant fishing grounds from the western Atlantic, whether as regards sizing or the great quantity of its product or service. It is placed S. of Cape Breton Island as well as the eastern a part of Nova Scotia between the parallels of 42? 44 and 55'? 46' northern latitude as well as the meridians of 59? 62 and 04'? 35' west longitude. It has a duration of 156 a long way and a thickness, including the Midsection Ground, of 76 mls. It is about 420 mls E. ? S. from Boston to the southwestern edge, which means about 48 hours' steaming for the otter-trawl fleet. The normal contour of the bank within the 65-fathom range, as laid down on the Admiralty chart, approaches considerably a very elongated ellipse, the more time axis operating NE. by E. and SW. by W.; but over a broad area to eastward of the center of your budget, soundings of less than 50 fathoms connect it directly with all the Middle Floor, which we now have here included in the some financial institution. The total degree of the financial institution thus described is about 7,000 sq . geographical miles. Off its eastern stop lies Banquereau (the Quereau of the fishermen) with The Gully between, along with a short extended distance of the american edge are the La Have Ridges. The depths minnkota parts from the southern edge of the bank increase rapidly from 80 to700 and 1,200, as well as 1,400 fathoms. At the eastern end is Sable Island, [16] "graveyard of ships", aslim and long, crescent-shaped height seemingly lessening in place each year, formed entirely of sand which has been blown Into innumerable hummocks and dunes. Away from both stops of the isle are very long and dangerous sand bars. The length of the island is 20 a long way; its greatest width is
  • 3. approximately 1? a long way. It is said how the Northwest Light-weight has been relocated three times due to the fact that the american end of your island continues to be literally mesmerised. It is in an E. and W. direction, along with the depth of water over the bars for a extended distance of 7 to 10 miles out does not exceed 2 fathoms, and even 10 miles farther out the depths do not go over 10 to 11 fathoms. Within recent years fishermen have reported the appearance of a sand shoal about 5 or 6 a long way SE. in the Northeast Light-weight. This is thought to appear at low water. In general, your budget slopes S. and W. from the tropical isle, depths which range from 18 to 60 fathoms. The bottom is usually sandy with patches of pebbles and gravel. Currents are occasionally very strong about Sable Island and are fairly irregular; apparently they are much influenced by the winds. On the other parts of your bank typically there is but little recent, whatever there may be usually tending toward the west. Previously the cod and halibut were the food fishes most taken on this page, but with the changed techniques in the fishery (as the growth of the otter-trawl fleet) and a changed flavor in our general public the haddock catch has become the second most significant in the invoices of species of fish from these waters. The halibut fishery stands next in the collection. Other underside feeders appear in less amounts, the pollock and the cusk perhaps being next to be able of significance, with hake and a considerable amount of the various flatfishes in the otter trawls. These latter are marketed as sole. Remembering the small amount of haddock in the fares taken from these waters in past years, the writer asked a variety of old-time fishermen as to its abundance in the old days. The response was normally yes and Oh, there were always haddock there; often they concerned us a whole lot." Then, noting my surprise at so placing it, "You know, the haddock isn't much like a salt species of fish." Not too valuable proportionately, though it will likely be noted that in 1923 the haddock catch on this page was a really good second towards the cod catch in poundage. In the otter-trawl catch out of this ground it will be noted that this positions of the two species are reversed. These steamers certainly take more than 2 pounds of haddock to 1 of cod on other offshore grounds--possibly the result of running in the shoaler waters and on the easier bottom due to difficulty of dragging on the rocky and kelp-covered terrain, which the cod seems to choose, as a rule. Nevertheless the bottom about the Western Bank is of the nature concerning offer small obstruction on the passage of the net, in order that virtually all parts of it may be fished by this method; and this, put into the acknowledged movements of your cod schools makes it feasible at a number of seasons of the year to catch a larger proportion with this species if it is so preferred. Haddock are found about the bars at both comes to an end of the isle in Mar and from that time to around June 1 in from 15 to 22 fathoms. They are also ample 18 a long way W. from the Northwest Light at the same seasons and at the same depths. DuringCould and April, and June they come in next to the island in from 10 to 17 fathoms--even going to 1 fathom. Through the other year (with the exception of the cooler months, if they have moved away from into greater water) they may be found everywhere in the bank on sandy bottom in 28 to 30 fathoms, where by most of the beam trawl sportfishing is carried on. There exists a good cod school each and every year on the comparatively level underside along the southwestern and western ends of the floor in 70 fathoms and a lot more from Feb 1 to May 1, and in most years some this kinds is adopted this area. In May this school appears to have moved on to a piece of base about 20 miles lengthy lying SW. from the Northwest Light and achieving depths averaging 27 fathoms. With fair fishing for cod on the European Bank throughout most of the year, they seem to be most abundant in the first of March to June. The wintertime school right here
  • 4. appears to be smaller compared to that on Georges, but apparently this species trips this terrain in considerable numbers in the spawning year. During winter the cod are mainly found upon the western portion of the bank, stepping into the shoaler waters towards Sable Isle as the spring season advances (in the course of March and April), the "Bend" of your island and also the neighborhood of your bars in 2 to 4 fathoms, where they are often seen using the hook or can be "jigged." being favorite grounds. The ground lying W. from the Northwest Light, about and on the North west Bar (18 miles W, from the light-weight), is a favorite cod ground in June and might. The shoal water on the rocky underside WNW from the Northwest Gentle furnishes very good cod minn kota parts from June 10 to July 1. This piece starts just outside the 3-mile stretch of breakers running outside the land and extends overseas in a generally westerly path to 24 fathoms. Significantly hand-lining is completed here. From the shoal h2o, in April and May, the fish seem to be giving on the "lant," (Ammodytes americanus). It is said that this fish taken on the bottom close to the tropical isle are small compared to those located farther western. The shoal water from the northern shore of the island is said to get good cod grounds and favorite spots for "dory hand-upholster." The cod educational institutions seem to show up on the Northern Peak (SE. from the Northeast Light 40 miles to SE ? S. from same point 28 miles) in late March and also the first of April, moving N. and W. on the island. The cod of Sable Tropical island are said to be fine, organization fish, perhaps due to abundance from the "reddish clams" (bank clams) on these grounds. The cod and haddock fishery is carried on by American and Canadian sailing otter and vessels trawlers, a lot more English and French http://mdc.mo.gov/fishing vessels of the latter class undertaking the fishery of this soil each year. Halibut are found on the Western Banking institution virtually all the season at depths varying with all the seasons. Like a halibut bank, this, with all the Gully and Quereau--the truth is, all one piece of ground--ranks secondly only to the Grand Bank Itself. The ideal fishing here for halibut is found from January to October. There are various places on and about the bank that the halibut seems to choose, as the Optimum of Pike, 85 a long way W. by S. in the Northwest Light-weight of Sable Island; S. and SW. of Sable Island from 12 to 38 miles; SW. 20 miles in 60 fathoms in May possibly; thence out into 150 and 100 fathoms in June; in fact, after the 100--fathom curve over the edge of this bank, beyond the Northeast Optimum (40 a long way SE. from your Northeast Lighting), into the Gully and around the The southern part of Prong of Quereau towards the Middle Prong. Apparently they leave this piece of base in July. Where the normal water is so shoal that they can be observed taking the bait or tinkering with the catch before taking, usually the minn kota components are close to the island in the spring. InApr and May, and June a good halibut ground is at 18 fathoms 24 miles WNW. from Sable Island. The European Bank is apparently a good serving ground for cod and halibut mainly because it abounds in shellfish and crustaceans, as well as certain times there are many small species of minn kota parts after it, such as the lant and herring, on what these species and the haddock, also, specially prey. Plenty of swordfish is taken here in August and September, mainly by American vessels. Banquereau. Segregated from the Western Bank from the Gully, it has a very unnatural form--the main bank close to rectangular, having a narrow westerly extension of comparatively typical form. Its length, E. and W., is about 120 miles, its greatest width about 47 miles, as well as its total location about 2,800 miles.
  • 5. The main portion of the bank lies in between 44? 45 and 04'? 01' north latitude and 67? 10' and 59? 00' western longitude, and the western prolongation lies involving 44? 24' and 44? 42' north latitude and 69? 80 and 00'? 05' western longitude. Northern of Banquereau lies Artimon, distant 3 miles, and Misaine, remote from 2 to 15 miles in accordance with the places from where measurements are taken. The currents here are of diverse force, very much influenced by the wind, to ensure several days of strong tides may be followed by intervals should there be little if any present. Around the eastern part of Quereau is surely an area of shoal ground referred to as Rocky Bottom, having a range of about 18 fathoms; elsewhere depths work from 18 to 50 fathoms. There are scattered spots of sand and pea gravel, even though typically the bottom is rocky. Cod and halibut are the main food fish hake, haddock and taken and cusk being taken in small numbers. The Difficult Bottom, a shoal soil of 20 to 25 fathom depths on the eastern part, was much resorted to by dory handliners in summertime. Occasional very good fares are taken towards the western, even though the cod are most plentiful about the eastern portion of the bank. The very best cod angling on this bank comes from May until finally September, if the schools gather to feed with the lant, squid, crustaceans, and shellfish, then really abundant. Halibut are found on this page all the 12 months off the edges in 100 to 400 fathoms. Seemingly these are providing and breeding grounds for this species, and it is not unusual for any school to keep for weeks and even weeks in one area, though a few of these may be minn kota parts in migration northward. The principal halibut reasons are down the eastern and the southern part of borders of your bank- -the Southwest Prong and the Southwest Cove (within 44? N. lat. and between 58? 30' and 58? 55' W. long), the center Prong (44? 14' N. lat. and 58? W. long.), along with the Eastern Slope (44? 28' to 45? 00' N. lat.)--in depths of 150 to 400 fathoms. These serious-water areas are rocky and support a really rich growth and development ofcorals and gorgonians, sea anemones, etc. The Eastern Slope has an abundance of bank clams in depths of 25 fathoms. These beds are perfect hand-line grounds for cod. The halibut, too, rss feeds to. Minn Kota is the oldest company regarding electric fishing motors in the world together with nearly 70 many years of hard-earned experience.a considerable extent with these reddish clams. The Stone Fencing off the eastern slope of Quereau is certainly a rocky bit of ground packed with "trees" (corals) in 250 fathoms. This is a great halibut ground although it is nearly impossible to haul the gear by hand and using the "gurdy" (a roller turned from a crank and fastened to the dory's bow for winding up the trawl) becomes necessary. Occasional fares of halibut are taken on and about the Rocky Bottom part in 20 to 25 fathoms from July 1 to August 1. The Gully. This is basically the deep waterway between Banquereau and Sable Island or Western Bank. It stretches in an WNW. and an ESE. direction north of Sable Island, transforming somewhat unexpectedly S. at its eastern end and continuing lower between the eastern end of Western Lender and the South west Prong of Banquereau. The entire length is around 80 mls, the greatest thickness about 20 miles. Depths range from 68 to 145 fathoms spanning a bottom of gravel, rocks and beach sand and mud. The difficult and gravelly portions develop several ridges separated by areas of better materials, apart from in the eastern section, where intervals in between are mostly covered by pebbles and sharp stones. Ocean currents are generally westerly, of varying strength, a lot affected by the easterly winds. The Gully is a very important halibut floor. The halibut are not present in great amounts all over the ground, perhaps the very best of the fishing simply being on the difficult and gravelly slopes and
  • 6. ridges included between the meridians of 69? and 80? western longitude. This rocky base is rich in food, as well as the lant and herring are generally plentiful within their period. In the spring the halibut appear to be especially numerous in the northern and northwestern aspects of the bank, afterwards, in June and July, moving further out. Some, are found within winter. Engine Maintenance • Don’t permit oil or even debris build-up in the actual bilges. • Inspect the particular lagging regarding engine and heater exhausts regarding damage and deterioration as well as nearby objects pertaining to heat damage or charring. • Verify exhaust techniques regarding inboard engines for leaks. • check regarding loose fuel joints, damaged gasoline tanks or perhaps deteriorating hoses.Even though the cod may also be found in The Gully in 60 to 90 fathoms, it can do not are of regular occurrence; and apparently there are almost no haddock here, possibly because of the level of the h2o and the character of the base. Artimon Bank. Posseses an area of some 120 rectangular miles using a bottom of stones and pea gravelrocks and depths of 38 to 50 fathoms. It can be but little known because of the habit of the anglers to use the larger grounds close at hand. Cod are known to be present on this page, however. The lender lies N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated from this by a thin, deep-water station. Misaine Lender. In general banking institutions are divided by some 20 mls of deeply water, though lies N. of the european two-thirds of Quereau, at one spot very in close proximity to. Its best length is 80 mls and its greatest width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms more than a bottom shattered and rocky. A few halibut trips are landed from it in most several years, even though it is not of much value as a sport fishing soil. Canso Lender. A long, narrow extension of Misaine Bank, lying in an E, and W. course; its span is 45 miles and its greatest thickness 13 mls, its location being about 425 square miles. Depths range from 30 to 65 fathoms across a bottom of sand, with spots of gravel and pebbles. More fished by vessels from Nova Scotia; possibly it is overshadowed by the existence of its larger sized Quereau, neighbors and Western Banks, in which grounds it forms essentially one piece of bottom, only narrow, deeply-normal water channels splitting them, even though it is not of much importance being a fishing ground, particularly as judged by the use of it by the United states fleet. These larger reasons are heavily fished the two by Us vessels and through those from Nova Scotia ports as well as
  • 7. by French and English otter trawlers. The statistics given right here and somewhere else within this report are taken from the published bulletins of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include simply the landings of vessels of 5 plenty net, or older, at the ports of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me. [Table 5--Angling grounds from the offshore To the north Atlantic, demonstrating the principal kinds taken with them] [Footnote 16: "Pedro Reinel, a Portuguese pilot of much fame" (Herrera) produced a map in 1505 showing Sable Tropical isle, feared and dreaded by all fishermen even in those days, in which he called it "Santa Cruz." Jacamo Gastaldi, an Italian cartographer, in 1548 shows it "Isolla de Industry." Sir Humphrey Gilbert or his historian, says that the Portuguese had manufactured an interesting resolution here for shipwrecked mariners.
