Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10
Apparently there is no reason why this must not be an all-the-year minn kota elements ground, but it
really seems never to be been to much in the winter months. It furnishes, however, a very good
summertime handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring weeks it abounds in cod,
cusk, and hake, all minn kota parts of big size.
Roseway Bank. This bank lies N. of your western component of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne
Light, Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy off of Lockport, Nova Scotia, on the
southeastern edge. It is oblong in shape and of small degree--about 270 square geographical miles.
Its greatest size is 21 miles and its greatest breadth 15 kilometers. It expands from 43? 12' to 43?
33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' to the west longitude as well as the northwest corner
is connected with the shore restrict of 60 fathoms with a narrow throat. Depths are from 33 to 48
fathoms. The bottom is ofsand and gravel, and rocks; in the Northeast Optimum the bottom is of
yellow-colored gravel and mud.
The power and course of both of them are much affected by the wind, although currents in this
region are certainly not nearly so strong as about Cape Browns and Sable Bank, their general
direction being WSW. and ENE the westerly much the stronger.
Hake, pollock and halibut occur, the best minn kota elements months being from May to October,
when the lender is resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia, while the principal sea food
undertaken here arecod and haddock, and cusk. A few New England craft also minn kota elements
here.
La Have Financial institution. Situated eastward of Browns Bank and S. and E. of Roseway Bank. It
extends from 42? 34' to 43? 26' to the north latitude a distance of 52 a long way, and from 63? 50' to
65? 07' western side longitude a distance of around 54 a long way. The bank is almost divided into
two portions, that the eastern (La Have Bank correct) extends N and S. 39 miles and the western
portion virtually E. and W. about 35 kilometers. The total portion of the bank is approximately 1,200
miles.
The base is largely coarsepebbles and pea gravel, and rock, with more compact areas of sand
distributed in some places. Depths manage from 40 to 50 fathoms. This is certainly much relying on
the force and course of the breeze and is generally quite powerful during easterly blows, even
though the general set of the currents is to the westward.
The principal minn kota components upon this bank in past times has been for cod and haddock: and
while previous reports, (1881) speak of this as possessing once been a favorite angling terrain for
halibut and suggest that it was not at time of great importance and importance because fishery, the
figures with this ground for the year 1923 show the halibut catch to have been third in volume and
first in value of the species taken there. In reality, the catch of halibut here makes quite an imposing
shape when the comparatively small size of the ground is regarded as.
Little Los angeles Have along with the La Have Ridges are just continuations of this back towards
the American Bank for the distance of around 45 miles. This locations the eastern limit in
approximately 62? 50' west longitude, the northern and the southern part of boundaries becoming
about as those of La Have Lender. The area of the ridges is approximately 1,575 miles. The base
here is a succession of ridges of gravel and pebbles with occasional spots of rocks. Depths are from
53 to 80 fathoms. The current, sometimes strong, is weaker right here than further W. in the bank
and, except throughout easterly wind, is but little noticed. The general establish is westerly.
"The Ridges" says the report prior to mentioned, "were for many years one of the favorite resort
hotels for halibut catchers in winter, and many very good catches of cod had been taken here at that
season. At present but few halibut are caught except within the deep water along the the southern
area of edge of the soil, where they sometimes have been discovered quite plentiful during almost
the entire 12 months." Seemingly there has not been much improvement in these problems since the
writer's time; minn kota parts are most often present within about the same amounts as in former
years.
1 piece of underside, having depths of 25 to 50 fathoms more than red clay-based, lying roughly in
43? 08' to 43? 10' north latitude and about 81? to 83? west longitude, seems an effective spring and
early summertime ground. Apparently red-clay bottom indicates an excellent halibut soil, as this
varieties is usually current where this kind of bottom is available.
Hake are found in good numbers inside the deep h2o about the ends of the floor and even around
the Ridges.
These waters can be heavily fished from Canadian ports, plus a fair amount of American vessels visit
them each year, most of them hailing from Boston or Gloucester.
Scandinavian Bank. 18 miles SSW. from Shelbourne Light. Nova Scotia. It is actually about 3 miles
extended in an E. and W. direction by about ? distance wide. On the whole, the bottom is level, with
depths from 50 to 70 fathoms; the shoal parts are sharp and rocky, the bottom on the deeper
portions being made up mostly of small dark and yellow pebbles.
This really is a summer halibut ground (July and August) in depths from 45 to 60 fathoms, and
halibut occur in October in the further waters about this. It is also a fair summer cod ground, and
cusk can be found in the deep water about the edges throughout most of the season. In species,
general and seasons are much as on Roseway.
American Bank. This is one of the most critical minn kota elements grounds in the western Atlantic,
whether as regards dimension or the large quantity of its merchandise. It is S. of Cape Breton Island
as well as the eastern element of Nova Scotia between the parallels of 42? 55' and 44? 46' northern
latitude as well as the meridians of 59? 04' and 62? 35' west longitude. It has a length of 156 a long
way and a width, including the Center Ground, of 76 a long way. It is about 420 miles E. ? S. from
Boston to the southwestern edge, which implies about 48 hours' steaming for the otter-trawl fleet.
The typical contour of your bank within the 65-fathom range, as set down on the Admiralty graph or
chart, approaches fairly a very elongated ellipse, the more time axis jogging NE. by E. and SW. by
W.; but over a wide area to eastward of the center of the financial institution, soundings of less than
50 fathoms hook it up directly together with the Middle Terrain, which we certainly have here
included in the some financial institution. The total level of the financial institution thus outlined is
about 7,000 sq geographical a long way. Off its eastern finish lies Banquereau (the Quereau of the
anglers) with The Gully between, plus a short distance of the american edge would be the La Have
Ridges.
The depths off the southern fringe of the bank improve rapidly from 80 to1 and 700,200, and also
1,400 fathoms. In the eastern conclusion is Sable Island, [16] "graveyard of ships", aslim and
lengthy, crescent-shaped elevation seemingly reducing in place each year, shaped entirely of sand
that has been blown Into innumerable dunes and hummocks. Off of both comes to an end of the
island are lengthy and risky sand bars. The size of the island is 20 mls; its finest width is
approximately 1? mls. It is said that this Northwest Light has been shifted three times because of the
fact that the traditional western end in the island has been literally mesmerised. It is based on an E.
and W. direction, and the depth of water over the night clubs for a length of 7 to 10 miles out does
not surpass 2 fathoms, and even 10 miles further out the depths do not go beyond 10 to 11 fathoms.
Within recent years fishermen have reported the look of a sand shoal about 5 or 6 a long way SE.
from your Northeast Lighting. This is said to appear at low drinking water.
In general, the financial institution slopes S. and W. from the tropical island, depths ranging from 18
to 60 fathoms. The bottom is usually sandy with patches of pebbles and gravel. Currents are often
very strong about Sable Tropical isle and are considerably irregular; seemingly they are much
influenced by the winds. On the other parts of the bank usually there is but little current, whatever
there exists usually tending toward the west.
Formerly the cod and halibut were the food fishes most taken here, but with the changed
approaches in the fishery (as the development of the otter-trawl fleet) along with a changed flavor in
our open public the haddock catch has become the second most significant in the invoices of minn
kota parts readily available waters. The halibut fishery stands next in the checklist. Other bottom
feeders occur in less figures, the pollock and the cusk perhaps becoming next as a way of
importance, with hake and a great deal of the various flatfishes in the otter trawls. These latter are
marketed as sole.
Remembering the tiny amount of haddock within the fares removed from these oceans in previous
years, the writer asked a number of old-time anglers as to its abundance in the old days. The
respond was generally yes and Oh, there was always haddock there; sometimes they concerned us a
lot." Then, noting my surprise at so adding it, "You know, the haddock isn't much as being a salt
species of fish."
Not so valuable proportionately, though it will likely be noted that in 1923 the haddock catch in this
article was an excellent second to the cod capture in poundage. In the otter-trawl catch from this
ground it will be noted that the positions of the two species are reversed. As a rule, these steamers
certainly acquire more than 2 pounds of haddock to 1 of cod on other offshore grounds--maybe the
result of operating in the shoaler waters and on the smoother bottom as a result of difficulty of
dragging on the rocky and kelp-covered ground, which the cod seems to favor. If it is so desired,
nevertheless the bottom on the Western Banking institution is of those nature as to offer small
obstruction for the passage of the net, in order that virtually all areas of it may be fished by this
approach; and this, added to the known movements of your cod universities makes it possible at
certain seasons of the season to catch a bigger proportion of the species.
Haddock are found in regards to the bars at both comes to an end of the tropical island in Mar and
from that time to around June 1 in from 15 to 22 fathoms. They are also numerous 18 mls W. from
your Northwest Light-weight at the same seasons and at the same depths. DuringCould and Apr, and
June they come in close to the island in from 10 to 17 fathoms--even going to 1 fathom. Through the
other year (apart from the cold months, if they have moved off of into deeper water) they might be
found throughout the bank on sandy base in 28 to 30 fathoms, exactly where most of the beam trawl
sportfishing is carried on.
There is a good cod school annually on the fairly level base along the traditional western and
southwestern sides of the terrain in 70 fathoms and a lot more from Feb 1 to May 1, and in most
years a certain amount of this types is adopted this area. In May this school seems to have moved on
to a piece of bottom part about 20 miles lengthy lying SW. from the Northwest Light and having
depths averaging 27 fathoms. With fair fishing for cod on the European Bank while in most of the
year, they seem to be most abundant from the first of March to June. The wintertime school in this
article appears to be smaller compared to that on Georges, but apparently this species appointments
this ground in sizeable numbers through the spawning time of year. In the winter months the cod
are mainly identified upon the western part of the bank, getting into the shoaler waters toward
Sable Tropical island as the springtime advances (during March and April), the "Bend" in the island
along with the neighborhood from the bars in 2 to 4 fathoms, where they are often seen taking the
hook or can be "jigged." being favored grounds. The floor lying W. from the Northwest on, about and
Light the Northwest Bar (18 miles W, from the light-weight), is a beloved cod ground in May and
June. The shoal water on the rocky base WNW from the Northwest Light furnishes very good cod
angling from June 10 to July 1. This piece begins just beyond the 3-mile expand of breakers running
out from the land and extends offshore in a usually westerly direction to 24 fathoms. A lot hand-
lining is performed here.
Within the shoal water, in Apr and May, the fish seem to be feeding on the "lant," (Ammodytes
americanus). It is said the fish taken at the base close to the tropical isle are small compared to
those found farther west. The shoal water in the northern shore of the tropical island is said to
possess good cod grounds and favorite places for "dory hands-lining." The cod schools seem to show
up on the Upper Peak (SE. from the Northeast Light 40 miles to SE ? S. from same point 28 miles) in
late March and the first of April, relocating N. and W. for the island. The cod of Sable Tropical island
are reported to be fine, business minn kota elements, perhaps because of the abundance of your
"reddish colored clams" (bank clams) on these grounds.
The haddock and cod fishery is carried on by American and Canadian sailing vessels and otter
trawlers, a lot more English and French vessels of the second option class performing the fishery of
this terrain each year.
Halibut are located on the Western Financial institution virtually all the year at depths varying with
the seasons. As a halibut lender, this, using the Gully and Quereau--in fact, all 1 piece of soil--ranks
second only to the Grand Lender Itself. The most effective fishing here for halibut is found from
January to October. There are numerous places on and about the bank that the halibut seems to
favor, as the Peak of Pike, 85 kilometers W. by S. through the Northwest Gentle of Sable Island; S.
and SW. of Sable Island from 12 to 38 miles; SW. 20 miles in 60 fathoms in Might; thence out into
150 and 100 fathoms in June; in fact, pursuing the 100--fathom curve over the edge of this bank,
past the Northeast Maximum (40 kilometers SE. through the Northeast Light-weight), into the Gully
and around the Southern Prong of Quereau towards the Middle Prong. Apparently they leave this
piece of bottom part in July. Where the drinking water is so shoal that they can be seen taking the
bait or having fun with the hook before taking, most of the minn kota components are near to the
island in the spring. InMight and April, and June a good halibut ground is at 18 fathoms 24 mls
WNW. from Sable Island.
The Traditional western Bank appears to be a good giving ground for cod and halibut mainly
because it abounds in shellfish and crustaceans, as well as at certain periods there are many more
compact species of minn kota parts with it, such as the lant and herring, where these varieties and
the haddock, also, especially prey. A large amount of swordfish is taken in August and September,
mainly by American vessels.
Banquereau. Divided from the European Bank with the Gully, it has a very abnormal form--the
principle bank approximately rectangular, using a narrow westerly extension of comparatively
normal form. Its length, E. and W., is about 120 miles, its greatest breadth about 47 miles, along
with its total location about 2,800 miles.
The main portion of the banking institution lies involving 44? 45 and 04'? 01' north latitude and 67?
59 and 10'? 00' western longitude, along with the western prolongation lies among 44? 24' and 44?
42' north latitude and 69? 80 and 00'? 05' western longitude. In accordance with the places that
measurements are taken, to the north of Banquereau lies Artimon, distant 3 miles, and Misaine,
distant from 2 to 15 miles. If any current, the currents listed here are of diverse force, significantly
influenced by the wind, to ensure several days of strong tides may be combined with intervals when
there is little.
About the eastern component of Quereau is an area of shoal ground referred to as the Rocky Bottom,
having a degree of about 18 fathoms; somewhere else depths work from 18 to 50 fathoms. There are
scattered spots of yellow sand and pea gravel, even though most of the time the bottom is rocky.
Cod and halibut are the primary food fish hake, haddock and taken and cusk being taken in small
figures. The Rocky Bottom, a shoal ground of 20 to 25 fathom depths on the eastern part, was much
resorted to by dory handliners in summertime. Occasional good fares are taken to the west, even
though the cod are most plentiful in the eastern section of the bank. The ideal cod minn kota parts
for this bank is produced by May till September, as soon as the schools get to feed upon the lant,
squid, crustaceans, and shellfish, then extremely abundant.
Halibut are found on this page all the calendar year off the ends in 100 to 400 fathoms. Seemingly
these are breeding and feeding grounds for this kinds, and it is not unusual to get a school to stay
for months and even several weeks in one area, though many of these may be minn kota parts in
migration northward.
The primary halibut grounds are along the southern and eastern borders in the bank--the Southwest
Prong and the South west Cove (in about 44? N. lat. and between 58? 30' and 58? 55' W. long), the
Middle Prong (44? 14' N. lat. and 58? W. long.), along with the Eastern Slope (44? 28' to 45? 00' N.
lat.)--in depths of 150 to 400 fathoms. These deeply-drinking water areas are rocky and support a
really rich development ofgorgonians and corals, sea anemones, etc. The Eastern Slope has an
abundance of bank clams in depths of 25 fathoms. These beds are excellent hand-line reasons for
cod. The halibut, too, feeds to a sizeable extent after these red-colored clams.
The Stone Fence off the eastern slope of Quereau is an extremely rocky component of ground full of
"trees" (corals) in 250 fathoms. This is an excellent halibut terrain although it is practically
impossible to haul the gear by hand and the use of the "gurdy" (a curler turned with a fastened and
crank to the dory's bow for winding in the trawl) becomes necessary. Infrequent fares of halibut are
taken about and on the Rocky Base in 20 to 25 fathoms from July 1 to August 1.
The Gully. Here is the deep waterway between Banquereau and Sable Island or Western Banking
institution. It runs in an WNW. and an ESE. direction north of Sable Island, turning somewhat
abruptly S. at its eastern end and continuing down between the eastern end of Western Lender and
the South west Prong of Banquereau. The complete length is approximately 80 mls, the greatest
width about 20 miles. Depths range from 68 to 145 fathoms across a bottom of rocks, fine sand and
gravel and mud. The difficult and gravelly portions form several ridges separated by areas of finer
materials, except in the eastern section, where intervals between are mostly covered by pebbles and
sharp stones. Ocean currents are generally westerly, of varying strength, a lot affected by the
easterly wind.
The Gully is a very important halibut ground. The halibut are not present in great phone numbers all
over the ground, perhaps the best of the sport fishing becoming on the rocky and gravelly ridges and
slopes included in between the meridians of 69? and 80? west longitude. This rocky bottom part is
loaded with food, and the lant and herring are generally plentiful within their period. In the spring
the halibut are especially several in the northwestern and northern parts of the bank, in the future,
in June and July, moving farther out. Some, are found in winter. It does not seem to be of regular
incidence; and obviously there are very little haddock in this article, probably due to the depth in the
water and the nature from the bottom, whilst the cod may also be found in The Gully in 60 to 90
fathoms.
Artimon Bank. Has a area of some 120 sq miles with a bottom of gravel and rocksdepths and stones
of 38 to 50 fathoms. It really is but unknown because of the tendency of the anglers to use the
greater grounds shut at hand. Cod are known to be present in this article, however. The lender lies
N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated from it by a filter, deep-water station.
Misaine Bank. In general financial institutions are split up by some 20 miles of serious water, even
though lies N. of the european two-thirds of Quereau, at one spot very around. Its best length is 80
kilometers and its best width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms across a bottom shattered
and difficult. It is not of much importance as a fishing ground, despite the fact that a few halibut
trips are landed from this in most yrs.
Canso Financial institution. A long, narrow extension of Misaine Financial institution, lying within an
E, and W. direction; its length is 45 miles and its particular greatest breadth 13 mls, its place being
about 425 rectangular miles. Depths range from 30 to 65 fathoms over a bottom of sand, with spots
of gravel and pebbles. It is not of much importance as a sport fishing ground, especially as judged
using it by the American fleet, though far more fished by vessels from Nova Scotia; perhaps it really
is overshadowed by the presence of its larger neighborhood friends, Western and Quereau Banking
institutions, with which reasons it kinds virtually one particular piece of bottom, only slim, deep-
water stations separating them. These larger grounds are heavily fished the two by Us vessels and
through those from Nova Scotia ports along with by French and The english language otter trawlers.
The statistics given here and someplace else within this report are taken from the published
bulletins of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include only the landings of vessels of 5 loads
net, or older, at the plug-ins of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me.

[Footnote 16: "Pedro Reinel, a Portuguese pilot of much fame" (Herrera) made a map in 1505
exhibiting Sable Tropical isle, dreadful and feared by all fishermen even in those days, where he
called it "Santa Cruz." Jacamo Gastaldi, an Italian cartographer, in 1548 shows it "Isolla de Arena."
Sir Humphrey Gilbert or his historian, says that the Portuguese had manufactured an interesting
resolution here for shipwrecked mariners. This, "After intelligence we had of a Portugal who has
been himself provide when the Portugals, above 40 years past (thus before 1551) did put after the
island neat and swine to particular breed of dog, which were because exceedingly increased."]

Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10

  • 1. Fishing Grounds of the Gulf 1 10 Apparently there is no reason why this must not be an all-the-year minn kota elements ground, but it really seems never to be been to much in the winter months. It furnishes, however, a very good summertime handline fishery for cod at dogfish time, and in the spring weeks it abounds in cod, cusk, and hake, all minn kota parts of big size. Roseway Bank. This bank lies N. of your western component of La Have and SE. of Shelbourne Light, Nova Scotia: 31 miles SSE. from the whistling buoy off of Lockport, Nova Scotia, on the southeastern edge. It is oblong in shape and of small degree--about 270 square geographical miles. Its greatest size is 21 miles and its greatest breadth 15 kilometers. It expands from 43? 12' to 43? 33' north latitude, and from 64? 25' to 64? 52' to the west longitude as well as the northwest corner is connected with the shore restrict of 60 fathoms with a narrow throat. Depths are from 33 to 48 fathoms. The bottom is ofsand and gravel, and rocks; in the Northeast Optimum the bottom is of yellow-colored gravel and mud. The power and course of both of them are much affected by the wind, although currents in this region are certainly not nearly so strong as about Cape Browns and Sable Bank, their general direction being WSW. and ENE the westerly much the stronger. Hake, pollock and halibut occur, the best minn kota elements months being from May to October, when the lender is resorted to by craft from western Nova Scotia, while the principal sea food undertaken here arecod and haddock, and cusk. A few New England craft also minn kota elements here. La Have Financial institution. Situated eastward of Browns Bank and S. and E. of Roseway Bank. It extends from 42? 34' to 43? 26' to the north latitude a distance of 52 a long way, and from 63? 50' to 65? 07' western side longitude a distance of around 54 a long way. The bank is almost divided into two portions, that the eastern (La Have Bank correct) extends N and S. 39 miles and the western portion virtually E. and W. about 35 kilometers. The total portion of the bank is approximately 1,200 miles. The base is largely coarsepebbles and pea gravel, and rock, with more compact areas of sand distributed in some places. Depths manage from 40 to 50 fathoms. This is certainly much relying on the force and course of the breeze and is generally quite powerful during easterly blows, even though the general set of the currents is to the westward. The principal minn kota components upon this bank in past times has been for cod and haddock: and while previous reports, (1881) speak of this as possessing once been a favorite angling terrain for halibut and suggest that it was not at time of great importance and importance because fishery, the figures with this ground for the year 1923 show the halibut catch to have been third in volume and first in value of the species taken there. In reality, the catch of halibut here makes quite an imposing shape when the comparatively small size of the ground is regarded as. Little Los angeles Have along with the La Have Ridges are just continuations of this back towards the American Bank for the distance of around 45 miles. This locations the eastern limit in approximately 62? 50' west longitude, the northern and the southern part of boundaries becoming about as those of La Have Lender. The area of the ridges is approximately 1,575 miles. The base here is a succession of ridges of gravel and pebbles with occasional spots of rocks. Depths are from
  • 2. 53 to 80 fathoms. The current, sometimes strong, is weaker right here than further W. in the bank and, except throughout easterly wind, is but little noticed. The general establish is westerly. "The Ridges" says the report prior to mentioned, "were for many years one of the favorite resort hotels for halibut catchers in winter, and many very good catches of cod had been taken here at that season. At present but few halibut are caught except within the deep water along the the southern area of edge of the soil, where they sometimes have been discovered quite plentiful during almost the entire 12 months." Seemingly there has not been much improvement in these problems since the writer's time; minn kota parts are most often present within about the same amounts as in former years. 1 piece of underside, having depths of 25 to 50 fathoms more than red clay-based, lying roughly in 43? 08' to 43? 10' north latitude and about 81? to 83? west longitude, seems an effective spring and early summertime ground. Apparently red-clay bottom indicates an excellent halibut soil, as this varieties is usually current where this kind of bottom is available. Hake are found in good numbers inside the deep h2o about the ends of the floor and even around the Ridges. These waters can be heavily fished from Canadian ports, plus a fair amount of American vessels visit them each year, most of them hailing from Boston or Gloucester. Scandinavian Bank. 18 miles SSW. from Shelbourne Light. Nova Scotia. It is actually about 3 miles extended in an E. and W. direction by about ? distance wide. On the whole, the bottom is level, with depths from 50 to 70 fathoms; the shoal parts are sharp and rocky, the bottom on the deeper portions being made up mostly of small dark and yellow pebbles. This really is a summer halibut ground (July and August) in depths from 45 to 60 fathoms, and halibut occur in October in the further waters about this. It is also a fair summer cod ground, and cusk can be found in the deep water about the edges throughout most of the season. In species, general and seasons are much as on Roseway. American Bank. This is one of the most critical minn kota elements grounds in the western Atlantic, whether as regards dimension or the large quantity of its merchandise. It is S. of Cape Breton Island as well as the eastern element of Nova Scotia between the parallels of 42? 55' and 44? 46' northern latitude as well as the meridians of 59? 04' and 62? 35' west longitude. It has a length of 156 a long way and a width, including the Center Ground, of 76 a long way. It is about 420 miles E. ? S. from Boston to the southwestern edge, which implies about 48 hours' steaming for the otter-trawl fleet. The typical contour of your bank within the 65-fathom range, as set down on the Admiralty graph or chart, approaches fairly a very elongated ellipse, the more time axis jogging NE. by E. and SW. by W.; but over a wide area to eastward of the center of the financial institution, soundings of less than 50 fathoms hook it up directly together with the Middle Terrain, which we certainly have here included in the some financial institution. The total level of the financial institution thus outlined is about 7,000 sq geographical a long way. Off its eastern finish lies Banquereau (the Quereau of the anglers) with The Gully between, plus a short distance of the american edge would be the La Have Ridges. The depths off the southern fringe of the bank improve rapidly from 80 to1 and 700,200, and also 1,400 fathoms. In the eastern conclusion is Sable Island, [16] "graveyard of ships", aslim and lengthy, crescent-shaped elevation seemingly reducing in place each year, shaped entirely of sand
  • 3. that has been blown Into innumerable dunes and hummocks. Off of both comes to an end of the island are lengthy and risky sand bars. The size of the island is 20 mls; its finest width is approximately 1? mls. It is said that this Northwest Light has been shifted three times because of the fact that the traditional western end in the island has been literally mesmerised. It is based on an E. and W. direction, and the depth of water over the night clubs for a length of 7 to 10 miles out does not surpass 2 fathoms, and even 10 miles further out the depths do not go beyond 10 to 11 fathoms. Within recent years fishermen have reported the look of a sand shoal about 5 or 6 a long way SE. from your Northeast Lighting. This is said to appear at low drinking water. In general, the financial institution slopes S. and W. from the tropical island, depths ranging from 18 to 60 fathoms. The bottom is usually sandy with patches of pebbles and gravel. Currents are often very strong about Sable Tropical isle and are considerably irregular; seemingly they are much influenced by the winds. On the other parts of the bank usually there is but little current, whatever there exists usually tending toward the west. Formerly the cod and halibut were the food fishes most taken here, but with the changed approaches in the fishery (as the development of the otter-trawl fleet) along with a changed flavor in our open public the haddock catch has become the second most significant in the invoices of minn kota parts readily available waters. The halibut fishery stands next in the checklist. Other bottom feeders occur in less figures, the pollock and the cusk perhaps becoming next as a way of importance, with hake and a great deal of the various flatfishes in the otter trawls. These latter are marketed as sole. Remembering the tiny amount of haddock within the fares removed from these oceans in previous years, the writer asked a number of old-time anglers as to its abundance in the old days. The respond was generally yes and Oh, there was always haddock there; sometimes they concerned us a lot." Then, noting my surprise at so adding it, "You know, the haddock isn't much as being a salt species of fish." Not so valuable proportionately, though it will likely be noted that in 1923 the haddock catch in this article was an excellent second to the cod capture in poundage. In the otter-trawl catch from this ground it will be noted that the positions of the two species are reversed. As a rule, these steamers certainly acquire more than 2 pounds of haddock to 1 of cod on other offshore grounds--maybe the result of operating in the shoaler waters and on the smoother bottom as a result of difficulty of dragging on the rocky and kelp-covered ground, which the cod seems to favor. If it is so desired, nevertheless the bottom on the Western Banking institution is of those nature as to offer small obstruction for the passage of the net, in order that virtually all areas of it may be fished by this approach; and this, added to the known movements of your cod universities makes it possible at certain seasons of the season to catch a bigger proportion of the species. Haddock are found in regards to the bars at both comes to an end of the tropical island in Mar and from that time to around June 1 in from 15 to 22 fathoms. They are also numerous 18 mls W. from your Northwest Light-weight at the same seasons and at the same depths. DuringCould and Apr, and June they come in close to the island in from 10 to 17 fathoms--even going to 1 fathom. Through the other year (apart from the cold months, if they have moved off of into deeper water) they might be found throughout the bank on sandy base in 28 to 30 fathoms, exactly where most of the beam trawl sportfishing is carried on. There is a good cod school annually on the fairly level base along the traditional western and southwestern sides of the terrain in 70 fathoms and a lot more from Feb 1 to May 1, and in most years a certain amount of this types is adopted this area. In May this school seems to have moved on
  • 4. to a piece of bottom part about 20 miles lengthy lying SW. from the Northwest Light and having depths averaging 27 fathoms. With fair fishing for cod on the European Bank while in most of the year, they seem to be most abundant from the first of March to June. The wintertime school in this article appears to be smaller compared to that on Georges, but apparently this species appointments this ground in sizeable numbers through the spawning time of year. In the winter months the cod are mainly identified upon the western part of the bank, getting into the shoaler waters toward Sable Tropical island as the springtime advances (during March and April), the "Bend" in the island along with the neighborhood from the bars in 2 to 4 fathoms, where they are often seen taking the hook or can be "jigged." being favored grounds. The floor lying W. from the Northwest on, about and Light the Northwest Bar (18 miles W, from the light-weight), is a beloved cod ground in May and June. The shoal water on the rocky base WNW from the Northwest Light furnishes very good cod angling from June 10 to July 1. This piece begins just beyond the 3-mile expand of breakers running out from the land and extends offshore in a usually westerly direction to 24 fathoms. A lot hand- lining is performed here. Within the shoal water, in Apr and May, the fish seem to be feeding on the "lant," (Ammodytes americanus). It is said the fish taken at the base close to the tropical isle are small compared to those found farther west. The shoal water in the northern shore of the tropical island is said to possess good cod grounds and favorite places for "dory hands-lining." The cod schools seem to show up on the Upper Peak (SE. from the Northeast Light 40 miles to SE ? S. from same point 28 miles) in late March and the first of April, relocating N. and W. for the island. The cod of Sable Tropical island are reported to be fine, business minn kota elements, perhaps because of the abundance of your "reddish colored clams" (bank clams) on these grounds. The haddock and cod fishery is carried on by American and Canadian sailing vessels and otter trawlers, a lot more English and French vessels of the second option class performing the fishery of this terrain each year. Halibut are located on the Western Financial institution virtually all the year at depths varying with the seasons. As a halibut lender, this, using the Gully and Quereau--in fact, all 1 piece of soil--ranks second only to the Grand Lender Itself. The most effective fishing here for halibut is found from January to October. There are numerous places on and about the bank that the halibut seems to favor, as the Peak of Pike, 85 kilometers W. by S. through the Northwest Gentle of Sable Island; S. and SW. of Sable Island from 12 to 38 miles; SW. 20 miles in 60 fathoms in Might; thence out into 150 and 100 fathoms in June; in fact, pursuing the 100--fathom curve over the edge of this bank, past the Northeast Maximum (40 kilometers SE. through the Northeast Light-weight), into the Gully and around the Southern Prong of Quereau towards the Middle Prong. Apparently they leave this piece of bottom part in July. Where the drinking water is so shoal that they can be seen taking the bait or having fun with the hook before taking, most of the minn kota components are near to the island in the spring. InMight and April, and June a good halibut ground is at 18 fathoms 24 mls WNW. from Sable Island. The Traditional western Bank appears to be a good giving ground for cod and halibut mainly because it abounds in shellfish and crustaceans, as well as at certain periods there are many more compact species of minn kota parts with it, such as the lant and herring, where these varieties and the haddock, also, especially prey. A large amount of swordfish is taken in August and September, mainly by American vessels. Banquereau. Divided from the European Bank with the Gully, it has a very abnormal form--the principle bank approximately rectangular, using a narrow westerly extension of comparatively normal form. Its length, E. and W., is about 120 miles, its greatest breadth about 47 miles, along
  • 5. with its total location about 2,800 miles. In accordance with the places that measurements are taken, to the north of Banquereau lies Artimon, distant 3 miles, and Misaine, distant from 2 to 15 miles. If any current, the currents listed here are of diverse force, significantly influenced by the wind, to ensure several days of strong tides may be combined with intervals when there is little. About the eastern component of Quereau is an area of shoal ground referred to as the Rocky Bottom, having a degree of about 18 fathoms; somewhere else depths work from 18 to 50 fathoms. There are scattered spots of yellow sand and pea gravel, even though most of the time the bottom is rocky. Cod and halibut are the primary food fish hake, haddock and taken and cusk being taken in small figures. The Rocky Bottom, a shoal ground of 20 to 25 fathom depths on the eastern part, was much resorted to by dory handliners in summertime. Occasional good fares are taken to the west, even though the cod are most plentiful in the eastern section of the bank. The ideal cod minn kota parts for this bank is produced by May till September, as soon as the schools get to feed upon the lant, squid, crustaceans, and shellfish, then extremely abundant. Halibut are found on this page all the calendar year off the ends in 100 to 400 fathoms. Seemingly these are breeding and feeding grounds for this kinds, and it is not unusual to get a school to stay for months and even several weeks in one area, though many of these may be minn kota parts in migration northward. The primary halibut grounds are along the southern and eastern borders in the bank--the Southwest Prong and the South west Cove (in about 44? N. lat. and between 58? 30' and 58? 55' W. long), the Middle Prong (44? 14' N. lat. and 58? W. long.), along with the Eastern Slope (44? 28' to 45? 00' N. lat.)--in depths of 150 to 400 fathoms. These deeply-drinking water areas are rocky and support a really rich development ofgorgonians and corals, sea anemones, etc. The Eastern Slope has an abundance of bank clams in depths of 25 fathoms. These beds are excellent hand-line reasons for cod. The halibut, too, feeds to a sizeable extent after these red-colored clams. The Stone Fence off the eastern slope of Quereau is an extremely rocky component of ground full of "trees" (corals) in 250 fathoms. This is an excellent halibut terrain although it is practically impossible to haul the gear by hand and the use of the "gurdy" (a curler turned with a fastened and crank to the dory's bow for winding in the trawl) becomes necessary. Infrequent fares of halibut are taken about and on the Rocky Base in 20 to 25 fathoms from July 1 to August 1. The Gully. Here is the deep waterway between Banquereau and Sable Island or Western Banking institution. It runs in an WNW. and an ESE. direction north of Sable Island, turning somewhat abruptly S. at its eastern end and continuing down between the eastern end of Western Lender and the South west Prong of Banquereau. The complete length is approximately 80 mls, the greatest width about 20 miles. Depths range from 68 to 145 fathoms across a bottom of rocks, fine sand and gravel and mud. The difficult and gravelly portions form several ridges separated by areas of finer materials, except in the eastern section, where intervals between are mostly covered by pebbles and sharp stones. Ocean currents are generally westerly, of varying strength, a lot affected by the easterly wind.
  • 6. The Gully is a very important halibut ground. The halibut are not present in great phone numbers all over the ground, perhaps the best of the sport fishing becoming on the rocky and gravelly ridges and slopes included in between the meridians of 69? and 80? west longitude. This rocky bottom part is loaded with food, and the lant and herring are generally plentiful within their period. In the spring the halibut are especially several in the northwestern and northern parts of the bank, in the future, in June and July, moving farther out. Some, are found in winter. It does not seem to be of regular incidence; and obviously there are very little haddock in this article, probably due to the depth in the water and the nature from the bottom, whilst the cod may also be found in The Gully in 60 to 90 fathoms. Artimon Bank. Has a area of some 120 sq miles with a bottom of gravel and rocksdepths and stones of 38 to 50 fathoms. It really is but unknown because of the tendency of the anglers to use the greater grounds shut at hand. Cod are known to be present in this article, however. The lender lies N. of the eastern part of Quereau, separated from it by a filter, deep-water station. Misaine Bank. In general financial institutions are split up by some 20 miles of serious water, even though lies N. of the european two-thirds of Quereau, at one spot very around. Its best length is 80 kilometers and its best width 40 miles. Depths are from 40 to 60 fathoms across a bottom shattered and difficult. It is not of much importance as a fishing ground, despite the fact that a few halibut trips are landed from this in most yrs. Canso Financial institution. A long, narrow extension of Misaine Financial institution, lying within an E, and W. direction; its length is 45 miles and its particular greatest breadth 13 mls, its place being about 425 rectangular miles. Depths range from 30 to 65 fathoms over a bottom of sand, with spots of gravel and pebbles. It is not of much importance as a sport fishing ground, especially as judged using it by the American fleet, though far more fished by vessels from Nova Scotia; perhaps it really is overshadowed by the presence of its larger neighborhood friends, Western and Quereau Banking institutions, with which reasons it kinds virtually one particular piece of bottom, only slim, deep- water stations separating them. These larger grounds are heavily fished the two by Us vessels and through those from Nova Scotia ports along with by French and The english language otter trawlers. The statistics given here and someplace else within this report are taken from the published bulletins of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and include only the landings of vessels of 5 loads net, or older, at the plug-ins of Boston and Glouscester, Mass., and Portland, Me. [Dinner table 5--Sportfishing grounds from the offshore Northern Atlantic, displaying the principal types taken on them] [Footnote 16: "Pedro Reinel, a Portuguese pilot of much fame" (Herrera) made a map in 1505 exhibiting Sable Tropical isle, dreadful and feared by all fishermen even in those days, where he called it "Santa Cruz." Jacamo Gastaldi, an Italian cartographer, in 1548 shows it "Isolla de Arena." Sir Humphrey Gilbert or his historian, says that the Portuguese had manufactured an interesting resolution here for shipwrecked mariners.
