‘Khadi, a symbol of self respect... connects rich & poor’
First India News
Jaipur: Chief Minis-
ter Ashok Gehlot said
that khadi has im-
mense power. It re-
moves differences be-
tween the rich and
poor. He exhorted
need to promote kha-
di and connect young
generation with it.
The CM was ad-
dressing inaugural
session of two-day in-
ternational confer-
ence on globalization
of khadi in HCMRIPA
on Thursday.
“Khadi removes dif-
ferences between rich
and poor as well as caste
and religion. Khadi is
embodiment of Gandhi
ji’s principles of truth,
renunciation, non-vio-
lence and simplicity,”
he said.
According to Gehlot,
khadi should not be
considered just a cloth
but a symbol of self-re-
spect. He expressed
hope that this would
give a new identity to
khadi and attract young
generation towards it.
He promised to imple-
ment whatever sugges-
tions came from delib-
erations in the confer-
ence.
The CM said in ru-
ral areas, khadi is a
major source of em-
ployment besides a
powerful tool for
women empower-
ment. He said that the
state government’s
decision of 50% re-
bate on khadi prod-
ucts in the 150th birth
anniversary year of
Mahatma Gandhi has
brought encouraging
results.
Gehlot said that
young generation has
little interest in work-
ing in khadi industries.
“Employment is dwin-
dling in rural areas.
The number of weavers
and spinners too has
been constantly declin-
ing. Therefore, the state
government would try
to bring in policies that
would increase employ-
ment opportunities as
well as number of weav-
ers and spinners,” he
added.
Gehlot said, “Our en-
deavour should be to
connect young genera-
tion with khadi. The
aim of organising year
long programme to com-
memorate 150th birth
anniversary of Gandhi
ji was to popularize his
thoughts so that young
people can take inspira-
tion from him.
Industry Minister
Parsadi Lal Meena
said that khadi is very
dear to the CM, which
is why for the first
time 50% rebate was
implemented.
Chief Secretary D B
Gupta said that khadi
is linked to our his-
tory and traditions.
He said that Gandhi ji
made khadi synony-
mous with independ-
ent struggle.
Additional chief sec-
retary (industry) Sub-
odh Agarwal informed
that the state govern-
ment has increased re-
volving fund from Rs
three to Rs 10 crore for
khadi promotion. Kha-
di Plaza is being con-
structed in Bikaner be-

form for branding and

Coronavirus: First case confirmed in Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram:
A person from Kerala,
who was studying at
Wuhan University in
China and had re-
turned to India, has
been detected positive
for coronavirus, the
Ministry of Health con-
firmed on January 30.
Posting from their of-
ficial Twitter handle,
the Ministry also said
that the condition of
the patient is stable and
is being closely moni-
tored by doctors.
Kerala Health Minis-
ter KK Shailaja has
also assured that the
student’s condition is
not serious, and he is
being taken care of,
stating there is no need
to panic.
Giving out further
details about the detec-
tion of the coronavirus
in the China-return
student, Shailaja said:
We learnt early on Jan-
uary 30 that 10 of the 20
samples we had sent to
NIV tested negative,
while six were marked
as suspected. Of these
six, one was confirmed
as positive, which is
the sample of the stu-
dent now admitted in a
medical care facility.

Jaipur: In a major de-
velopment towards
fight against the deadly
‘coronavirus’, the SMS
Hospital will start test-
ing for the virus from
Friday. With this now
there will not be any
need to send the sam-
ples to Pune for test.
The tests will now be
conducted in SMS and
other big laboratories
in state.
Union Health Minis-
try officials held a video
conferencing with
health officials of all
the states including Ra-
jasthan and asked them
to begin ‘coronavirus’
tests locally.
Subsequently, health
minister Dr Raghu
Sharma sought report
from the health officials
about preparations for
‘coronavirus’ testing.
He also asked them to
follow protocols while
testing the samples.
After the video con-
ferencing, additional
chief secretary (medi-
cal & health) Rohit Ku-
mar Singh informed
that the Central govern-
ment has launched a
new system regarding
‘coronavirus’ under
which samples will now
be tested at the SMS
Hospital and other big
laboratories. For this,
the Central government
will provide ‘reagent’.
Since, samples were
being sent to Pune till
now, crucial days were
lost in the process.
Singh also informed
that screening facility
has been enhanced at
the Jaipur Airport and
so far 1,100 passengers
have been screened but
no one was found posi-
tive. He also said that
updated reports are be-
ing received frequently
from the districts
through video confer-
encing.
Meanwhile, the state
government on Thurs-
day said it will identify
all travellers arriving
in the state from China
and get them examined
in view of the novel
coronavirus outbreak.
Singh said instruc-
tions have been given to
identify all passengers
coming from China to
Rajasthan and to get in-
formation about those
staying in various ho-
tels with the help of po-
lice department.
He said 18 passen-
gers from China ar-
rived in Rajasthan in
January and two of
them with initial coro-
navirus-like symptoms
were screened and ex-
amined.
30 Barmer students stuck in China
First India News
Jaipur: More than 50
families in Barmer are

Among them are 30
MBBS students who
belonged to Barmer.
They are in universi-

been denied permis-
sion to leave China.
These students are
confined to their hos-
tels and not allowed to
go out. The students
who have undergone
tests to check if they
are infected by the vi-
rus or not seemed wor-
ried but their parents
are more worried and
constantly calling
them to check if they
are fine.

has gone up but he and
his friends are safe.

THIS TIGER MAM IS
LIFE OF THE PARTY!
One ‘Tiger mam’ has been
labeled ‘life of the party’ by her
staff and junior officials posted in
the PHQ. The mam, who sits in
her plush office on the fourth floor
of the seven-storey building has
been recently promoted, however
since her promotion, the ‘tigress’
has stayed away from work! While
she chooses to vanish from office,
she regularly attends parties
thrown in her honor on being
promoted. While a few officials are
questioning her attitude, there are
those too who claim that since she
does not have any major work on
her hands, she can afford to ‘let
her hair down’.
RAJ POLICE IN FOR
IMAGE MAKEOVER!
At a time when a person’s
‘image’ in public domain
counts more than actual work
done by him, the state police is
looking for an ‘image makeover’.
There are those who work
diligently through their careers
and bring about a change in
society and then there are some
who diligently work but not for
the society rather for themselves.
However, not for long. Word is that
senior cops at PHQ have made a
list of 18 officials against whom
accusation of irregularities and
corruption have been levelled and
have also been charge-sheeted.
PHQ has decided to ‘let go’ of
these to better the khaki’s image.
A GAMA FAMOUS AS LIQUOR
MAFIA DUE TO HIS ‘DEEDS’
While a ‘Gama’ holds ultimate sway over his
‘territory’, it also means that he/she could use
this ‘power’ to facilitate miscreants or carry out a
morally wrong act. Well, one ‘Gama Sahab’ from
the Jaipur Commissionerate has been nick-named
‘Liquor Mafia’ as it is in his area that liquor ‘flows
freely’ in more than a dozen restaurants anytime of
the day! Moreover, even during dry days, liquor is
readily available here and till late night people throng
these restaurants. Interestingly, the Gama has
given responsibility to PCR and other officials from
the station of ‘managing accounts’ each day and
promptly the staff gets into the ‘recovery’ act as the
restaurants close down. While on one hand the DGP
is trying to rein in mafia, on the other hand there
are cops like this Gama who are involved in such
activities. Interestingly, the Gama has been recently
promoted and is awaiting a transfer.

BHANWARI CASE: STATEMENTS BEING RECORD
‘GOVT TO PROVIDE FACILITIES TO HOLD ALL HOME
MATCHES OF RAJ ROYALS IN STATE DURING IPL’
Jaipur: After the order of Rajasthan High Court in the infamous ANM Bhanwari Devi
kidnapping and murder case, the process of recording the accused statement was
started in the SC/ST court on Thursday. The Rajasthan High Court had ordered the
commencement of judicial statement recording after the statement of American DNA
expert Amber B Carr was not recorded for a long time. The process was started in
the court of Peethaseen Officer Anima Dadhich in the SC/ST court. The statements
of the accused Sohanlal were taken on record on the first day. Advocate Birbal Bish-
noi represented Sohanlal, while Advocates SP Sharma and Pramod Dutt were there
on behalf of the CBI. The statement of Amber B Carr was not being recorded for a
long time, due to which the process was stuck.
Jaipur: The state government is ready to provide all the required facilities for organ-
ising all the home matches of Rajasthan Royals in the state during the 13th edition
of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Not only this, but the government is also ready
to conduct cricket matches in the stadiums of Udaipur and Jodhpur, along with the
SMS Stadium in Jaipur. AAG Satyendra Raghav provided this information on behalf
of government in a PIL filed by former Ranji players Rahul Kanwat, Shailendra
Kaushik and Younus Ali in HC. The division bench of CJ Indrajit Mahanty has sought
a response from the Royals on organising home matches of the team outside the
state. At the same time, HC has kept the decision of BCCI to finalise the matches of
the Royals elsewhere under the petition. During the hearing, Raj Royals sought time
to present their reply, on which the bench granted them two weeks. Now, the matter
will be heard on February 13. Advocate Vimal Chaudhary represented the petitioners.

DETERIORATING
LAW & ORDER
ou must not lose faith in hu-
manity. Humanity is like an
ocean; if a few drops of the
ocean are dirty, the ocean does

—Mahatma Gandhi
On Thursday, a man opened fire at anti-
CAA protestors outside Jamia Millia Islamia
University, injuring one student, Shadab Fa-
rooq in the arm. Fortunately, Shadab is out of
danger. The firing took place despite heavy
police presence in the area and the man
was later overpowered by protesters. The
students were heading from Jamia to Ma-
hatma Gandhi’s memorial Rajghat. The
march was stopped at the Holy Family Hospi-
tal near the university. Students squatted in
the area, asking the police to go back.
The entire incident was caught on camera
in which the shooter dressed in light coloured
pants and a dark jacket, can be seen walking
away on an empty road barricaded by police,
then turning around and firing shots.
He supposedly shouted something like
“yeh lo azaadi” before firing. He is said to
be a minor which is even more worrying.
The incident today is not just a reflec-
tion of deteriorating law and order in
the capital but far worse. It is a state-
ment of what the CAA and NRC are do-
ing this nation. The elections in Delhi
are fuelling the divide. Elections might be
won or lost but will this hatred also go away?
Toxic speeches add to the bitter environ-
ment and twist the mind of the impression-
able youth.
The leaders of this nation need to think
about why the youth of India is sitting in pro-
tests on the roads and focusing on or worry-
ing about grades, courses, employment and
the hundreds of things that youth suppos-
edly are apt to do. Why does a minor take up
arms and indulge in an act of extreme vio-
lence against people he does not even know?
That a serious point of view has been taken
by the government and strictest action or-
dered is fine but this does not solve the issue
at hand. After such an incident the protests
will intensify and so will marginalisation.
The protest against the shooting lasted
more than seven hours with protestors
being detained and later released.
An attempt to murder case has been filed
against the shooter, supposedly his FB ac-
count which had hate posts has been deleted
and his mark-sheet showing that he is a mi-
nor is doing the rounds on social media.
It is poignant that the incident occurred on
Martyr’s Day. When the entire nation (hope-
fully) was remembering the teachings of Ma-
hatma Gandhi of non- violence and peaceful
protest and also how he died, this entire inci-
dent echoes that fateful day.
It was yesterday when Gandhiji was re-
membered more than ever through speeches,
functions, commemorations and much more
by the political leaders. They should also re-
member his teachings.
IN-DEPTH
“
Y
wo crucial developments in in-
ternational arena including
British prime minister Boris
Johnson’svictoryinparliament
leading to passing of legislation
to Brexit European union on
Jan 31 coupled with American
president Donald Trump Im-
peachment and subsequent
high-level tension with Iran
may have fallout on India hence
Prime Minister Narender Modi
will have to tread cautiously to
protect interests of the nation.
Prime Minister, Johnson
while increasing working
permit for Indian students
for 24 months had sent clear
signal that he will favour
policies which will enhance
intake in British universi-
ties and the equal playing
field will be created when
compared with Non-European
students and they will fill the
void which will be fallout of
leaving EU.
Similarly, Trump has sup-
ported India on crucial is-
sues like aberration of 370
article, acts of terrorism vis
a vis Pakistan etc and chanc-
es of his Impeachment by
Senate are being ruled out.
NEGATIVE IMPACT OF
BREXIT ON INDIA
An important impact would be
visible on currency volatility
as there wou ld be devolution
of Pound and Euro due to Brex-
it. Indian companies with a siz-
able presence will have to bear
the brunt.
The UK has always been a
gateway for Indian firms to en-
ter the EU single market. After
Brexit, this may cause short
term distress on Indian firms.
Brexit can affect the Indian
flagship IT market sector, giv-
en that EU accounts for 17 %
of the global market and UK
accounts for solely 3% out of
that 17%. Brexit will increase
overhead cost and setting up of
new headquarters perhaps, in
both EU and UK separately
With Brexit, there will be a
considerable spike in the price
of imports, foods and other eve-
ryday commodities, which will
impact Indian firms.
Automobile, Pharma and
IT might be the most affected.
NASSCOM has predicted that
the effect of Brexit will be
felt on the $108 Billion Indian
IT sector in the short term.
POSITIVE IMPACT OF
BREXIT ON INDIA
Free trade agreement: After
losing access to the EU single
market, the UK would want to
develop trade relations with
emerging markets around the
world. India, with strong eco-
nomic fundamentals and a
large domestic market, is in a
better position.
Easy market access: India
is a significant Foreign Direct
Investment (FDI) source for the
UK because many Indian firms
have used it as a gateway to the
EU single market. Initially, af-
ter divorcing from the EU,
the UK wouldn’t like to miss
Indian investment. It will at-
tract Indian firms by offer-
ing more incentives.
EFFECT ON EDUCATION
SECTOR/STUDENTS &
TRAVEL
Britain is one of the most
sought after education destina-
tion for Indians. Brexit frees up
funds for the other students and
more Indian students might be
able to get scholarships.
INVESTORS MOVING TO
SAFE HAVEN
Approximately 38,000 Indian
students came to the UK to
pursue higher education in
2010. The number fell to
16,550 in 2016.
The reason was stricter stu-
dent immigration laws. It made
getting a student visa and find-
ing work post-study hard. As a
result, students from India
and non-EU nations opted for
more welcoming countries.
Last year, however, the tides
changed. Brexit made a positive
impact on Indian immigrants
hoping to study in the UK.
21,165 students got the visa
required for higher education
in the UK in 2018, while in 2017
only 15,161 students got it.
That’s a 40% increase.
AN EQUAL PLAYING
GROUND FOR INDIAN
STUDENTS
Until now, a non-EU student
faced more restrictions than an
EU student while applying to
Britishcolleges.AEuropeanUn-
ion resident was far more likely
to get admission. It’s the reason
why there are approximately
1,30,000 international students
from EU studying in the UK.
Owing to Brexit, EU student
enrolments are already slow-
ing down and now EU students
will stop getting any special
treatment, levelling the playing
field for all overseas applicants.
MORE TIME TO GET
WORK PERMITS IN UK
All students will get 2 years to
find employment after com-
pleting the studies.
Moreover, Indian students
can work temporarily during
this period making Brexit a
hidden boon for them.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
OPEN UP IN BIG WAY
The benefits of Brexit aren’t
limited to the higher odds of
admission or an extended time
period to get a job. The chance
of obtaining employment will
also enhance.
IMPACT IS VISIBLE
The job prospects for Indian
students in the UK, after Brex-
it, may grow exponentially.
House of Representatives of
America has passed a resolu-
tion with 224 to 194 majority
which has stopped President
Trump from starting any war
with Iran after killing an army
general who was closest to
Khomeini. India may benefit In-
dia which has got close ties with
Iran which is major source of
importof crudeoil.Theconflict
between America and Iran may
cripple the Indian economy
which is already in bad shape.
Now as per indications, there
are fewer chances of war which
may protect our ties with Iran.

overly preoccupied with
reactions to online posts
and messages.
Our new research has
identified the main trig-
gers of this psychological
phenomenon, the contexts
in which it happens and the
types of fears involved in it.
We have also suggested
new design features which
social media platforms
could introduce to mini-
mise this most modern
form of social anxiety.
Humans are funda-
mentally social crea-
tures. Our identity, be-
liefs and behaviours
come from and are
shaped by our interac-
tions with others. From
those we know well, to
fleeting moments of eye
contact with the stran-
gers we walk past on the
street. Previous genera-
tions may have had periods
of respite from the social
world. But the emergence
of social media platforms
andsmartphonesmeansac-
cess to social information
and interaction, 24 hours a
day, has never been easier.
This constant flow of in-
teraction has an effect, and
despite the adage that noth-
ing on the internet ever
goes away, social informa-
tion can expire and become
less meaningful after time.
For example, ongoing
group chats, live streaming
and direct messages which
expect an immediate an-
swer. When people fail to
keep up with all these bat-
tlingmessagesandstreams,
FoMO rears its ugly head.
FOMO
SUB-CATEGORIES
FoMO as a singular con-
cept is an oversimplifica-
tion. In contrast to the
common idea of FoMO
happening due to discon-
nection from the inter-
net and social media
(like losing signal or a
dead battery), we found
that it often happens
when people are indeed
connected. For example,
when people have multiple
devices and social media
accounts and have little
time or desire to check
them all, they may fear
missing important mes-
sages and events.
FoMO can also happen
when people get frus-
trated by others not re-
sponding, despite receiv-
ing and reading messag-
es. They may fear that
they have missed out on
previous interactions
and missed out on the
chance to show empathy.
Tech companies are con-
flicted between their goal
of having as many users as
possible on the one hand
and their need to balance
that with user wellbeing on
the other. As an alterna-
tive, we propose a liberal
and open model that al-
lows applications and
services – developed by
third parties that are
trusted and authorised
by the user – to access
their social media ac-
counts and online usage
data with the aim of
helping them to regulate
FoMO and the problem-
atic attachment to digi-
tal media in general.

SC STAYS PROCEEDINGS AGAINST
KANIMOZHI IN MADRAS HC
New Delhi: The SC on
Thursday stayed the
proceedings against DMK
MP Kanimozhi Karuna-
nidhi in Madras HC in
connection with a petition
alleging that she did not
show proper IT returns of
her husband in election
affidavit. The petitioner,
Santhanakumar, had
challenged Kanimozhi’s
election victory in the Ma-
dras High Court last year
for allegedly not show-
ing proper income tax
returns of her husband in
her election nomination.
Earlier the Madras HC had
dismissed Kanimozhi’s
petition seeking stay for
proceedings in the case,
following which she
moved the top court chal-
lenging the Madras High
Court order.
A

takes, advo-
cate AP Singh, who is
the lawyer of the Nirb-
haya gang-rape and
murder convicts, on
Thursday said that Su-
preme Court judges and
President of India are
not gods.
The statement came
after a five-judge bench
of the apex court dis-
missed the curative pe-
tition of Nirbhaya con-
vict Akshay Thakur in
the matter and rejected
an application seeking
a stay on the convicts’
execution, which is
scheduled for February
1. “Be it five senior
judges of the SC or the
President of India, they
are not gods. It is not
like they cannot make a
mistake,” Singh told re-
porters. He said that the
apex court did not agree
with the grounds for the
curative petition.
Informing that he has
also filed a petition in
the Patiala House Court
seeking a stay on the ex-
ecution of the convicts,
Singh said that he “will
also file a review peti-
tion pertaining to the
juvenility of Pawan Ku-
mar Gupta,” who is also
a convict in the matter.
Nirbhaya’s lawyer
Seema Kushwaha said
that the only legal rem-
edy the convicts’ are left
with is the mercy peti-
tion. “We have come
very close to the date of
the execution. Now,
they will not get any re-
lief from anyone. The
only legal remedy they
have now is the mercy
petition, which I don’t
think they should be al-
lowed. I hope that the
convicts are hanged on
February 1,” Kushwaha
told. —ANI
ADelhi court on Thursday issued a notice to the
Tihar jail authorities seeking its response of a
petition filed by the convicts in Nirbhaya gang-rape
and murder case seeking a stay on the execution,
which is scheduled for February 1. Session Judge
AK Jain asked Tihar Jail authorities to submit a
status report before 10 am tomorrow. The hearing in
the matter will be heard tomorrow. “This is clearly a
mockery of justice. Convicts’ lawyers are taking too
much time to use their legal remedies. Convict Vinay
filed his mercy plea yesterday,” public prosecutor
Irfan Ahmad told the court.
The dismissal of the curative petition of Akshay
Thakur by the SC has brought the convicts closer
to their execution and now without any delay, they
should be hanged on February 1, said Nirbhaya’s
mother Asha Devi on Thursday. “They have moved a
step forward towards their execution. Now, noth-
ing is left to provide them as they were given all
the time. All that is left is to hang them. Now, they
should be hanged without any delay,” Devi told. “It’s
not only me but everyone has understood that they
are trying to delay the execution. They have made a
mockery of the system,” she added.
Advocate for the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder
convicts, AP Singh on Thursday moved a peti-
tion in a Delhi court seeking a stay on the execution
of the convicts, scheduled on February 1. Singh, who
is representing convicts Akshay Thakur and Vinay
Sharma said, none of those convicted can be
hanged untill all of them have exhausted all legal op-
tions including the mercy petition. The matter will be
heard by Additional Sessions Judge AK Jain today
at 2 pm. Earlier this month, a Delhi court had issued
the death warrant for Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh,
Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Kumar Sharma.
The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the
curative petition of Akshay Thakur, one of the
four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape
and murder case and also rejected an application
seeking a stay on the convicts’ execution, which is
scheduled for February 1. “The application for an
oral hearing is rejected,” a five-judge bench headed
by Justice NV Ramana and also comprising justices
Arun Mishra, RF Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok
Bhushan said dismissing the petition, which sought
commutation of the convict’s death sentence to life
imprisonment.

Over 4,800 weapons,

Thanking the Prime

been purchased at New Fatehpura
at Udaipur for a price of fifteen
crore rupees. The deal is most
talked about deal of Udaipur.
BUILDERS’ NEW VENTURE TO
LAND OF TIGER
After a sluggish business in Jaipur, several
builders from the Pink City have turned
their heads toward the ‘land of the tiger’ -
Sawai Madhopur. In a bid to expand and
diverge their
businesses,
the builders
have
invested
crores of
rupees in
the past
two years in construction of palatial resorts.
Interestingly, for the purpose, land has been
purchased at throw away prices. However the
‘inside story’ of these ‘palaces’ is that they
have been constructed by part investment of
senior politicians from the state!
BANKRUPT BUILDER CRASH OFFICIALS’ HIGH HOPES
The Jaipur real-estate market is brimming with a ‘dispute’ between a builder and
few senior police officials. The builder conducted a fraud which had shocked the
senior officials and even after years after the bank fraud, the officials have continued
their ‘relationship’ with the builder in the hope that one day he would return their
‘investment’. However, their ‘dreams’ were shattered when during a meeting the builder
informed that he is bankrupt and doesn’t have a single penny to his name. The cops are
now confused whether to use ‘force’ to extract their money or to forgo the investment.

Jaipur: It was day of
mixed fortunes for the
Indians at the opening
day of SRFI Indian
Tour Jaipur Leg 2020
on Thursday. India’s
Abhishek Pradhan liv-
ing up to his top billing
made easy work of
Egypt’s Roger Baddour
11-6, 12-10, 11-4 to enter
pre-quarterfinals.
Kulvir Sharma, who
was given the wild
card entry in the
men’s section, was
no match for second
seeded Abhishek Agar-
wal in the opening
round. Abhishek made
short work of Kulvir
winning 11-7, 11-2, 11-6.
Abhishek beat Amir
Amirul (Malaysia) in
70-minute long 11-8,
8-11, 7-11, 11-5, 13-11. Ra-
hul Baitha (India) also
made it to the next
round beating Khanav
Nanavati (India) 11-3,
11-6, 11-2. In women’s
section, India’s Sunay-
na Kuruvilla made it to
last eight by beating
South Korea’s Hwayeo-
ng Eum 11-5, 13-11, 11-3.
Meanwhile, India’s
Riya Sisodia, Uditi
Mishra and Maansha
Bohra were also in the
fray and none of them
could clear the hurdle
of the first round. Riya
went down in straight
games to Urwashi Joshi
5-11, 5-11, 4-11. On the
opening day 32 matches
were played.
Injury-hit Federer said
he had no plans to
retire and still in good
shape to win Grand
Slams. He admitted
he only had “a three
percent” chance as he
nursed a groin injury
picked up in his quar-
terfinal epic against
Tennys Sandgren,
where he saved 7
match points.
FEDERER HAS NO
PLANS TO RETIRE
Sofia Kenin stunned
world number one
Ashleigh Barty 7-6 (8/6),
7-5 to end home hopes
at the Australian Open.
Kenin looked stunned at
reaching her first Grand
Slam final, at a tourna-
ment where she has
often gone unnoticed
while fellow Americans
Serena Williams and
15-year-old Coco
Gauff hogged
the headlines.
Melbourne: Novak
Djokovic continued
his winning streak
against Roger Federer
with a straight sets
victory in the semi-fi-
nals of the Australian
Open. 7-time champi-
on Djokovic came
back from being down
1-4 in the first set to
defeat the 6-time win-
ner Federer 7-6, 6-4,
6-3, and will now meet
the winner of the sec-
ond semi-final be-
tween Alexander
Zverev and Dominic
Thiem.
This will be Djoko-
vic’s 8th final appear-
ance at the Australian
Open. He is yet to lose
one till date and is one
win away from ex-
tending another
streak - he has won all
7 finals he has played
here. With this win,
defending champion
Djokovic stretched his
head-to-head record
against Federer to 27-
23. Djokovic has met
Federer 5 times at the
Australian Open, win-
ning 5 of them. The
Serbian hasn’t lost to
Federer at Melbourne
Park since 2007 and
hasn’t lost to him in
Grand Slams since
2012. Djokovic also
maintained his un-
beaten record in the
semi-finals of the
Australian Open.
Federer had a
chance to serve for
the first set at 5-4 but
Djokovic broke him at
love and then domi-
nated the tiebreaker.
There were doubts
over Federer’s fitness
after a five-set win
over Tennys Sand-
gren in the
quarterfinals.
The 20-time
major cham-
pion took a
brief medical
timeout after
Djokovic won the
first set 7-6 (1).

Jaipur: The executive
committee of Jaipur
District Cricket Asso-
ciation (JDCA) has
been dissolved and an
ad hoc committee
formed where Chief
Whip Mahesh Joshi
was the president of
the association and Dr
Bimal Soni was the sec-
retary.
The registrar coop-
erative institutions
Jaipur Murar Singh
Jadawat has ordered
fresh elections to be
held in 3 months. There
was a dispute in the
JDCA for the last two
years and the investi-
gating officer also
found that Secretary
Bimal Soni and Treas-
urer Sameer Sharma
were taking decisions
without bringing it to
the executive and
chairman’s notice.
The investigating of-
ficer has written in re-
port that there is no
coordination among
the JDCA officials. The
Secretary & Treasurer
are not fulfilling their
duties. They have also
been convicted in fi-
nancial matters. The
five-member ad hoc
committee includes
Amitraj, Zakir Khan,
Arun Garg, Mahesh
Saini and Mukesh Ver-
ma. Amitraj has been
appointed as the com-
mittee’s convener.
On November 6, First
India had published the
news that JDCA’s exec-
utive would be dis-
solved anytime and, fi-
nally, it was done on
Thursday.

that’s what I was doing. Very excited to be in the final, it’s a long
way to go. I have one more match on Saturday. Muguruza is

It re- moves differences be- tween the rich and poor. He exhorted need to promote kha- di and connect young generation with it. The CM was ad- dressing inaugural session of two-day in- ternational confer- ence on globalization of khadi in HCMRIPA on Thursday. “Khadi removes dif- ferences between rich and poor as well as caste and religion. Khadi is embodiment of Gandhi ji’s principles of truth, renunciation, non-vio- lence and simplicity,” he said. According to Gehlot, khadi should not be considered just a cloth but a symbol of self-re- spect. He expressed hope that this would give a new identity to khadi and attract young generation towards it. He promised to imple- ment whatever sugges- tions came from delib- erations in the confer- ence. The CM said in ru- ral areas, khadi is a major source of em- ployment besides a powerful tool for women empower- ment. He said that the state government’s decision of 50% re- bate on khadi prod- ucts in the 150th birth anniversary year of Mahatma Gandhi has brought encouraging results. Gehlot said that young generation has little interest in work- ing in khadi industries. “Employment is dwin- dling in rural areas. The number of weavers and spinners too has been constantly declin- ing. Therefore, the state government would try to bring in policies that would increase employ- ment opportunities as well as number of weav- ers and spinners,” he added. Gehlot said, “Our en- deavour should be to connect young genera- tion with khadi. The aim of organising year long programme to com- memorate 150th birth anniversary of Gandhi ji was to popularize his thoughts so that young people can take inspira- tion from him. Industry Minister Parsadi Lal Meena said that khadi is very dear to the CM, which is why for the first time 50% rebate was implemented. Chief Secretary D B Gupta said that khadi is linked to our his- tory and traditions. He said that Gandhi ji made khadi synony- mous with independ- ent struggle. One ‘Tiger mam’ has been labeled ‘life of the party’ by her staff and junior officials posted in the PHQ. The mam, who sits in her plush office on the fourth floor of the seven-storey building has been recently promoted, however since her promotion, the ‘tigress’ has stayed away from work! While she chooses to vanish from office, she regularly attends parties thrown in her honor on being promoted. While a few officials are questioning her attitude, there are those too who claim that since she does not have any major work on her hands, she can afford to ‘let her hair down’. RAJ POLICE IN FOR IMAGE MAKEOVER! At a time when a person’s ‘image’ in public domain counts more than actual work done by him, the state police is looking for an ‘image makeover’. Humanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.” —Mahatma Gandhi On Thursday, a man opened fire at anti- CAA protestors outside Jamia Millia Islamia University, injuring one student, Shadab Fa- rooq in the arm. Fortunately, Shadab is out of danger. The firing took place despite heavy police presence in the area and the man was later overpowered by protesters. The students were heading from Jamia to Ma- hatma Gandhi’s memorial Rajghat. The march was stopped at the Holy Family Hospi- tal near the university. Students squatted in the area, asking the police to go back. The entire incident was caught on camera in which the shooter dressed in light coloured pants and a dark jacket, can be seen walking away on an empty road barricaded by police, then turning around and firing shots. He supposedly shouted something like “yeh lo azaadi” before firing. He is said to be a minor which is even more worrying. The incident today is not just a reflec- tion of deteriorating law and order in the capital but far worse. It is a state- ment of what the CAA and NRC are do- ing this nation. The elections in Delhi are fuelling the divide. Elections might be won or lost but will this hatred also go away? Toxic speeches add to the bitter environ- ment and twist the mind of the impression- able youth. The leaders of this nation need to think about why the youth of India is sitting in pro- tests on the roads and focusing on or worry- ing about grades, courses, employment and the hundreds of things that youth suppos- edly are apt to do. Why does a minor take up arms and indulge in an act of extreme vio- lence against people he does not even know? That a serious point of view has been taken by the government and strictest action or- dered is fine but this does not solve the issue at hand. After such an incident the protests will intensify and so will marginalisation. The protest against the shooting lasted more than seven hours with protestors being detained and later released. An attempt to murder case has been filed against the shooter, supposedly his FB ac- count which had hate posts has been deleted and his mark-sheet showing that he is a mi- nor is doing the rounds on social media. It is poignant that the incident occurred on Martyr’s Day. When the entire nation (hope- fully) was remembering the teachings of Ma- hatma Gandhi of non- violence and peaceful protest and also how he died, this entire inci- dent echoes that fateful day. It was yesterday when Gandhiji was re- membered more than ever through speeches, functions, commemorations and much more by the political leaders. They should also re- member his teachings. IN-DEPTH “ Y wo crucial developments in in- ternational arena including British prime minister Boris Johnson’svictoryinparliament leading to passing of legislation to Brexit European union on Jan 31 coupled with American president Donald Trump Im- peachment and subsequent high-level tension with Iran may have fallout on India hence Prime Minister Narender Modi will have to tread cautiously to protect interests of the nation. Prime Minister, Johnson while increasing working permit for Indian students for 24 months had sent clear signal that he will favour policies which will enhance intake in British universi- ties and the equal playing field will be created when compared with Non-European students and they will fill the void which will be fallout of leaving EU. Similarly, Trump has sup- ported India on crucial is- sues like aberration of 370 article, acts of terrorism vis a vis Pakistan etc and chanc- es of his Impeachment by Senate are being ruled out. NEGATIVE IMPACT OF BREXIT ON INDIA An important impact would be visible on currency volatility as there wou ld be devolution of Pound and Euro due to Brex- it. Indian companies with a siz- able presence will have to bear the brunt. The UK has always been a gateway for Indian firms to en- ter the EU single market. After Brexit, this may cause short term distress on Indian firms. Brexit can affect the Indian flagship IT market sector, giv- en that EU accounts for 17 % of the global market and UK accounts for solely 3% out of that 17%. Brexit will increase overhead cost and setting up of new headquarters perhaps, in both EU and UK separately With Brexit, there will be a considerable spike in the price of imports, foods and other eve- ryday commodities, which will impact Indian firms. Automobile, Pharma and IT might be the most affected. NASSCOM has predicted that the effect of Brexit will be felt on the $108 Billion Indian IT sector in the short term. POSITIVE IMPACT OF BREXIT ON INDIA Free trade agreement: After losing access to the EU single market, the UK would want to develop trade relations with emerging markets around the world. India, with strong eco- nomic fundamentals and a large domestic market, is in a better position. Easy market access: India is a significant Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) source for the UK because many Indian firms have used it as a gateway to the EU single market. Initially, af- ter divorcing from the EU, the UK wouldn’t like to miss Indian investment. It will at- tract Indian firms by offer- ing more incentives. EFFECT ON EDUCATION SECTOR/STUDENTS & TRAVEL Britain is one of the most sought after education destina- tion for Indians. Brexit frees up funds for the other students and more Indian students might be able to get scholarships. INVESTORS MOVING TO SAFE HAVEN Approximately 38,000 Indian students came to the UK to pursue higher education in 2010. The number fell to 16,550 in 2016. The reason was stricter stu- dent immigration laws. It made getting a student visa and find- ing work post-study hard. As a result, students from India and non-EU nations opted for more welcoming countries. Last year, however, the tides changed. Brexit made a positive impact on Indian immigrants hoping to study in the UK. 21,165 students got the visa required for higher education in the UK in 2018, while in 2017 only 15,161 students got it. That’s a 40% increase. AN EQUAL PLAYING GROUND FOR INDIAN STUDENTS Until now, a non-EU student faced more restrictions than an EU student while applying to Britishcolleges.AEuropeanUn- ion resident was far more likely to get admission. It’s the reason why there are approximately 1,30,000 international students from EU studying in the UK. Owing to Brexit, EU student enrolments are already slow- ing down and now EU students will stop getting any special treatment, levelling the playing field for all overseas applicants. MORE TIME TO GET WORK PERMITS IN UK All students will get 2 years to find employment after com- pleting the studies. Moreover, Indian students can work temporarily during this period making Brexit a hidden boon for them. JOB OPPORTUNITIES OPEN UP IN BIG WAY The benefits of Brexit aren’t limited to the higher odds of admission or an extended time period to get a job. The chance of obtaining employment will also enhance. IMPACT IS VISIBLE The job prospects for Indian students in the UK, after Brex- it, may grow exponentially. House of Representatives of America has passed a resolu- tion with 224 to 194 majority which has stopped President Trump from starting any war with Iran after killing an army general who was closest to Khomeini. India may benefit In- dia which has got close ties with Iran which is major source of importof crudeoil.Theconflict between America and Iran may cripple the Indian economy which is already in bad shape. Now as per indications, there are fewer chances of war which may protect our ties with Iran. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL UK FORMALLY LEAVES THE EU TODAY Britain is one of the most sought after education destination for Indians T India is a significant Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) source for the UK because many Indian firms have used it as a gateway to the EU single market KS TOMAR The UK has always been a gateway for Indian firms to enter the EU single market. After Brexit, this may cause short term distress on Indian firms The author is a Political Analyst ear of missing out, or FoMO, is commonly de- scribed as that anxious feeling you get when you think other people might be hav- ing a good time without you. Excessive FoMO is closely related to symp- toms of behavioural ad- diction. It often leads to undesirable behaviour such as the constant checking of social me- dia, even in an inappro- priate context, like while driving, and becoming overly preoccupied with reactions to online posts and messages. Our new research has identified the main trig- gers of this psychological phenomenon, the contexts in which it happens and the types of fears involved in it. We have also suggested new design features which social media platforms could introduce to mini- mise this most modern form of social anxiety. Humans are funda- mentally social crea- tures. Our identity, be- liefs and behaviours come from and are shaped by our interac- tions with others. From those we know well, to fleeting moments of eye contact with the stran- gers we walk past on the street. Previous genera- tions may have had periods of respite from the social world. But the emergence of social media platforms andsmartphonesmeansac- cess to social information and interaction, 24 hours a day, has never been easier. This constant flow of in- teraction has an effect, and despite the adage that noth- ing on the internet ever goes away, social informa- tion can expire and become less meaningful after time. For example, ongoing group chats, live streaming and direct messages which expect an immediate an- swer. When people fail to keep up with all these bat- tlingmessagesandstreams, FoMO rears its ugly head. FOMO SUB-CATEGORIES FoMO as a singular con- cept is an oversimplifica- tion. In contrast to the common idea of FoMO happening due to discon- nection from the inter- net and social media (like losing signal or a dead battery), we found that it often happens when people are indeed connected. For example, when people have multiple devices and social media accounts and have little time or desire to check them all, they may fear missing important mes- sages and events. FoMO can also happen when people get frus- trated by others not re- sponding, despite receiv- ing and reading messag- es. They may fear that they have missed out on previous interactions and missed out on the chance to show empathy. Tech companies are con- flicted between their goal of having as many users as possible on the one hand and their need to balance that with user wellbeing on the other. As an alterna- tive, we propose a liberal and open model that al- lows applications and services – developed by third parties that are trusted and authorised by the user – to access their social media ac- counts and online usage data with the aim of helping them to regulate FoMO and the problem- atic attachment to digi- tal media in general. It is not like they cannot make a mistake,” Singh told re- porters. He said that the apex court did not agree with the grounds for the curative petition. Informing that he has also filed a petition in the Patiala House Court seeking a stay on the ex- ecution of the convicts, Singh said that he “will also file a review peti- tion pertaining to the juvenility of Pawan Ku- mar Gupta,” who is also a convict in the matter. Nirbhaya’s lawyer Seema Kushwaha said that the only legal rem- edy the convicts’ are left with is the mercy peti- tion. “We have come very close to the date of the execution. Now, they will not get any re- lief from anyone. The only legal remedy they have now is the mercy petition, which I don’t think they should be al- lowed. I hope that the convicts are hanged on February 1,” Kushwaha told. —ANI ADelhi court on Thursday issued a notice to the Tihar jail authorities seeking its response of a petition filed by the convicts in Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case seeking a stay on the execution, which is scheduled for February 1. Session Judge AK Jain asked Tihar Jail authorities to submit a status report before 10 am tomorrow. The hearing in the matter will be heard tomorrow. “This is clearly a mockery of justice. Convicts’ lawyers are taking too much time to use their legal remedies. Convict Vinay filed his mercy plea yesterday,” public prosecutor Irfan Ahmad told the court. The dismissal of the curative petition of Akshay Thakur by the SC has brought the convicts closer to their execution and now without any delay, they should be hanged on February 1, said Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi on Thursday. “They have moved a step forward towards their execution. Now, noth- ing is left to provide them as they were given all the time. All that is left is to hang them. Now, they should be hanged without any delay,” Devi told. “It’s not only me but everyone has understood that they are trying to delay the execution. They have made a mockery of the system,” she added. Advocate for the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder convicts, AP Singh on Thursday moved a peti- tion in a Delhi court seeking a stay on the execution of the convicts, scheduled on February 1. Singh, who is representing convicts Akshay Thakur and Vinay Sharma said, none of those convicted can be hanged untill all of them have exhausted all legal op- tions including the mercy petition. The matter will be heard by Additional Sessions Judge AK Jain today at 2 pm. Earlier this month, a Delhi court had issued the death warrant for Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, and Vinay Kumar Sharma. The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed the curative petition of Akshay Thakur, one of the four death row convicts in the Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case and also rejected an application seeking a stay on the convicts’ execution, which is scheduled for February 1. “The application for an oral hearing is rejected,” a five-judge bench headed by Justice NV Ramana and also comprising justices Arun Mishra, RF Nariman, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan said dismissing the petition, which sought commutation of the convict’s death sentence to life imprisonment. In a bid to expand and diverge their businesses, the builders have invested crores of rupees in the past two years in construction of palatial resorts. Interestingly, for the purpose, land has been purchased at throw away prices. However the ‘inside story’ of these ‘palaces’ is that they have been constructed by part investment of senior politicians from the state! BANKRUPT BUILDER CRASH OFFICIALS’ HIGH HOPES The Jaipur real-estate market is brimming with a ‘dispute’ between a builder and few senior police officials. The builder conducted a fraud which had shocked the senior officials and even after years after the bank fraud, the officials have continued their ‘relationship’ with the builder in the hope that one day he would return their ‘investment’. However, their ‘dreams’ were shattered when during a meeting the builder informed that he is bankrupt and doesn’t have a single penny to his name.
