1. Benchmarks end marginally down; Power top losing sector

Extending yesterdayโs southward journey, Indian indices made a gap down start amidst weak global cues. Pessimistic
sentiments persisted as investors took note of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's concern over the failure in controlling
inflation. Markets trimmed some losses to end marginally down. Among BSE sectorials, Power topped the laggards
followed by Capital Goods.
On global front, US markets traded negative on the first trading day of 2014 on the back of data indicating a slowdown
in manufacturing expansion in China. This is the first time markets started the year on a negative note since 2008.
Asian and European benchmarks traded weak tracking weak cues from US peers.
Back home, after making a steep hike of Rs 220 per cylinder for non-subsidized LPG cylinder, Government is now
considering to increase subsidized LPG cylinder quota to 12 per household from present quota of 9 cylinders. (Read

while 182 scrips remained unmoved.
The S&P BSE Sensex ended at 20851.33, down 37.00 points or 0.18%. The 30 share index touched a high and a
low of 20885.18 and 20731.33 respectively. 11 stocks advanced against 19 declining ones on the benchmark index.
The CNX Nifty lost 10.00 points or 0.16% to settle at 6211.15. The index touched high and low of 6221.70 and
6171.25 respectively. 19 stocks advanced against 31 declining ones on the index.

The S&P BSE Mid-cap index moved up to 6659.18 and gained 0.63% while S&P BSE Small-cap index jumped up by
0.60% to 6553.00.
The broader S&P BSE 500 index increased to 7732.57 (up 0.09%) and CNX 500 index rose to 4850.65 (up 0.04%).
The volatility as denoted by INDIA VIX lost 4.11% at 15.87 from its previous close of 16.55 on Thursday.

On the BSE Sectorial front, Information Technology (up 2.19%), Real Estate (up 0.86%) and Healthcare (up 0.70%)
were the top gainers.
Power (down 1.74%), Capital Goods (down 1.71%) and Oil & Gas (down 1.27%) were the top losers.

Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (up 2.76%), Infosys Ltd (up 2.61%), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (up 1.65%), Sun
Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd (up 1.05%) and HDFC Bank (up 0.99%) were the top gainers on the Sensex.
Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd (down 3.85%), Tata Power Company Ltd (down 3.83%), Tata Motors Ltd (down 2.49%),
Larsen And Toubro Ltd (down 2.33%) and NTPC Ltd (down 2.22%) were the top losers on the Sensex.
