What do lines mean?
                                Five basic types of lines:

           Vertical - Horizontal - Diagonal - Curved - Zigzag

Vertical - static, which means that they are inactive. They appear to be at rest and
express stability, dignity, poise, stiffness or formality.

Horizontal - also static. They often express feelings of peace, rest, quiet, and stability
as well as being comfortable, relaxed and calm.

Diagonal - Active, giving the feeling of action and movement, seeming to be pulled one
way or the other, not at rest.

Curved - Changing directions, active depending on the curve of the line. The less
active the curve the calmer the feeling. All curved lines are graceful.

Zigzag - Extremely active, create confusion, express feeling of excitement.
• In the following visual examples, what types
  of lines do you see?
• The following vocabulary words will help
you create your next art work and will
show up on the final exam. Please take the
time to learn and understand them,
practice them in your art work, and be able
  to define them on paper.
surreal
adjective
having the qualities of surrealism; bizarre : a surreal mix of fact and fantasy.

surrealism
noun
a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature that sought to
releasethe creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrationaljuxtaposition of images.

Launched in 1924 by a manifesto of André Breton and having a strong political content, the movement grew out of
symbolism and Dada and was strongly influenced by Sigmund Freud. In the visual arts its most notable exponents were
André Masson, Jean Arp, Joan Miró, René Magritte, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Man Ray, and Luis Buñuel.

abstract
adjective
existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence :abstract concepts such as love or beauty.
• dealing with ideas rather than events : the novel was too abstract and esoteric to sustain much attention.
• not based on a particular instance; theoretical : we have been discussing the problem in a very abstract manner.
• (of a word, esp. a noun) denoting an idea, quality, or state rather than a concrete object : abstract words like truth or
equality.
• of or relating to abstract art : abstract pictures that look like commercial color charts.

abstract expressionism
noun
a development of abstract art that originated in New York in the 1940s and 1950s and aimed at subjective emotional
expression with particular emphasis on thecreative spontaneous act (e.g., action painting). Leading figures were Jackson
Pollock and Willem de Kooning.
After having viewed numerous examples of the works of artists such as Joan Miro and Wassily
Kandinsky, you

should have a basic understanding of what surrealist and abstract art is.

Using Pen & Ink, watercolors/colored pencils, create a piece of art work that demonstrates

understanding of what both surreal and abstract art is while incorporating line expression and

what lines mean into your work.
