Pasig River – Our Story
Unit Summary
An enrichment activity focuses on environmental issues and awareness specifically water pollution. By using the Pasig River as the concrete example, it is the aim of this activity to promote understanding and create awareness about the problem besetting the Pasig River. The students will observe and research on the problems of the Pasig river, synthesize the problem, assess the programs implemented to restore the river, observe the lifestyle of the community along the river and finally come up with possible solutions to the problem of water pollution. It is also the task of the students to promote awareness to the community about the problem by conducting community outreach.

Assessment Summary
The students will be documenting and journaling the events of all the learning activities they are tasked to do. All group plan must be submitted to the teacher for approval. Rubrics for every learning tasks is given to each group for proper guidance. Each group will present in class their finished output at the culmination of the learning activity.

Instructional Procedures
Prior to Instruction:
Students are assigned into five groups with six-eight members each.
Familiarization of the Microsoft Office applications.
Rubrics for the different learning tasks is given to each group for proper guidance.
Setting the Stage
Begin the activity by asking the Essential Question, How can you make a difference about the issue concerning the Pasig River? How important is the Pasig River to the Metro Manila community?
Ask students to think individually about the question and then discuss their responses with each other. Ask for volunteers to share their responses with the whole class.
3. Introduce the learning activity to the class. Enumerate the learning tasks and explain the objectives, what it aimed to accomplish. The learning tasks for the activity are the following
1. Photostory of the problem faced by the Pasig River.
2. Documentary/Multimedia presentation of the history of Pasig River.
3. Powerpoint presentation about water pollution.
4. Music video depicting the Pasig River
5. Project proposal for the rehabilitation of the Pasig River.
6. Collage/Poster
*each group is required to have a project proposal and pick the other task (1-4) through lottery.
Gathering Information
Organize the different groups by assigning specific role like leader, secretary, planner, photographer, and encoder. Explain that every plan of the group must be approved by the teacher. The leader is in-charge of giving development regarding the learning tasks. The final product of this activity is the group presentation of their assigned tasks and everyone is allowed to give reflection after every presentation.
Organizing the Information
Have the students gather information about the task given. Let them work in their respective group and together work on the blueprint on how they will do their assigned task. Conduct class discussion to share students’ observation and unlock their difficulties. Give sample output for each learning tasks in order to have smooth student working. Schedule a working time in the computer laboratory for students to use computer.
Presenting the Product
The culmination of the activity will be the presentation of each group tasks. Assess the final product using the rubrics. Have the student enough time to present. The students must reflect in other group’s work. Focused group discussion (FGD) is used to discuss the following questions
What have you learned about the activity?
Is the learning activity made you appreciate the Pasig River?
How is technology important in promoting awareness to people regarding a certain problem?
As student, what would you suggest to improve the Pasig River?
Celebrate success with the school principal and the community you worked with. Upload the video presentation in the social networking site for awareness campaign.
