This document provides an assessment checklist for early emergent reading strategies. It lists reading strategies and behaviors teachers can observe in students to determine if students are beginning to use, sometimes use, often use, or have mastered each strategy. The strategies include one-to-one word matching, using pictures to identify unknown words, identifying parts of a book, recognizing patterns in books, checking initial letters, turning pages correctly, and more. The checklist contains over 25 reading strategies and can be used to track individual student progress through guided reading Levels A through B.
