How to Build Open Distributed Social Networks with no central point of control. Displays an OpenSource application that can browse and edit that network. Shows how it works, how it can do simple firewall based security. It then looks at how to add fine grained security in such a network that would be equivalent to Social Networking applications such as LinkedIn or Facebook.

Keynote presentation for the eLearning Consortium of Colorado 2014 conference -- their 25th year of the conference; the firs took place a month after Tim Berners-Lee got approval for his World Wide Web project. A Victorian era book represented the best technology of its time to organize, via a crude hypertext system, a collection of world knowledge. In the hands of a young boy growing up in the 1960s, it inspired a spirit of magic, wonder, and the vision of an open portal to the world of information. As an adult, he invented the World Wide Web. Tim Berners-Lee's original vision was of "the Web being so generally used that it became a realistic mirror of the ways in which we work and play and socialize. That was that once the state of our interactions was on line, we could then use computers to help us analyse it, make sense of what we are doing, where we individually fit in, and how we can better work together." As an open, connected space, the web remains a near infinite place we ought to revel that same wonder. Our educational careers begin in kindergarten, knowing intrinsically the value of sharing. Somewhere between there and graduate school, we lose track of this simple concept, be it worrying about theft of intellectual property or questioning the value of what we do. The open ecology of an Enquire Within Upon Everything web can undermine this limiting attitude and rekindle that sense of wonder. It's all about creating more potential serendipity. Let's celebrate the True Stories of what happens when educators share something openly on the web. Links and more at http://go.cogdog.it/elcc2014

There are currently more than 555 million unique domains for surface level websites that the average internet user can access. But there are 500 times that number of hidden sites that aren’t obvious to most. These sites are referred to as the Deep Web, which often gets a negative connotation in our modern media. The real illegal activities happen on the Dark Web, which is a region of the internet only accessible through anonymized browsers such as Tor. This presentation will explain the differences between the surface, deep, and dark webs and explain what each contains.

Who provides your e-mail service? Where do you post your photos? Do you download music still? When all of our data is spread amongst multiple devices between multiple locations – home, office, and mobile – then it becomes clear why on-line network services rule supreme over managing personal computers in providing synchronized capable services that don't require us to update software or hack-in fixes. The modern person's primary concern in using a computer is to get things done and stay connected with others globally in the most effective ways possible. The shift to on-line network services, often partnered with cloud computing, requires us all to question whose cloud our data is in, what can the cloud owner do with it, and what rights are we forking over to be on cloud nine. For example, if I use Google's Gmail service, what can Google do with my e-mail data? This last summer 2008 a great example emerged when the mega-popular micro-blogging service Twitter failed regularly resulting in pop-culture fall-out with sightings of the fail whale. Open Source hero Evan Prodromou of WikiTravel-fame stepped up and realized the shortcomings of Twitter's locked approach and created Identi.ca, an Open Software Service based micro-blogging web service that both worked solidly, replicated common functionality from similar services, and allowed for others to hack on the project, or set-up their own connected site if so desired. This presentation looks at the landscape of services like Identi.ca which are adapting the Free and Open Source Software approach to on-line network services publicly championed from the Autonomo.us blog. This is timely because the personal computing shift from the desktop to the web is a hot topic with the Gnome Online Desktop and Gnome 3.0 initiatives. However, with long development cycles, arduous community learning curves and reliance upon cranky software languages, the simple accessible nature of web application development is thriving. This presentation instigates increased development on web services that protect user autonomy by commonly using the GNU Affero GPL 3.0 software license, creating free services to replace popular non-free alternatives, and by replacing centralized services with open distributed ones when possible. This presentation emphasizes the role of the Gnome Desktop to be a lean mean on-line desktop machine and what role Chinese businesses can play in accelerating this next dynamic wave of the FLOSS movement.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/why-teams-call-analytics-is-critical-to-your-entire-business Nothing is as frustrating and noticeable as being in an important call and being unable to see or hear the other person. Not surprising then, that issues with Teams calls are among the most common problems users call their helpdesk for. Having in depth insight into everything relevant going on at the user’s device, local network, ISP and Microsoft itself during the call is crucial for good Microsoft Teams Call quality support. To ensure a quick and adequate solution and to ensure your users get the most out of their Microsoft 365. But did you know that ‘bad calls’ are also an excellent indicator of other problems arising? Precisely because it is so noticeable!? Like the canary in the mine, bad calls can be early indicators of problems. Problems that might otherwise not have been noticed for a while but can have a big impact on productivity and satisfaction. Join this session by Christoph Adler to learn how true Microsoft Teams call quality analytics helped other organizations troubleshoot bad calls and identify and fix problems that impacted Teams calls or the use of Microsoft365 in general. See what it can do to keep your users happy and productive! In this session we will cover - Why CQD data alone is not enough to troubleshoot call problems - The importance of attributing call problems to the right call participant - What call quality analytics can do to help you quickly find, fix-, and prevent problems - Why having retrospective detailed insights matters - Real life examples of how others have used Microsoft Teams call quality monitoring to problem shoot problems with their ISP, network, device health and more.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
