1. Inter-disciplinary partnerships
Engineering is a head-centric discipline where respect is earned and given based on one’s intellectual capabilities; engineers are often brutal in delivering criticism of less intelligent solutions which is essential for arriving at best-in-class solutions. On the other hand, Marketing and Sales appear to be relationship- centric, where people go to great lengths to ensure that relationships don’t suffer and hence avoid direct criticism. Healthy partnerships between Engineering and Marketing/Sales should be based on common ethical interests for the betterment of the organization without giving room for prejudice nor malice within a division or between divisions, while rewarding merit relevant to the specific discipline (Engineering, Marketing, Sales, etc.) by giving due importance to one’s relevant and demonstrated capabilities in terms of academic qualifications and work experience; such partnerships succeed when interdependence is acknowledged and a healthy mutual respect is maintained without loss of one’s individual self-respect.
