12. Research Data Management
Goal: Addingvalueandmaintainingaccess toresearch data over the course of itsscholarlylifecycle.
Componentsof a Research Data Management Plan:
•
Descriptionof the data tobecollected/ created(i.e. content, type, format, volume…)
•
Applicablestandards/ methodologiesfordata collection& management;
•
EthicsandIntellectualProperty
•
Plansfordata sharingand(open) access
•
Strategyforlong-term preservation

19. DesignatedCommunity
An
identifiedgroupof potentialConsumerswhoshouldbeabletounderstanda particularset of information. The DesignatedCommunity maybecomposedof multiple user communities. A DesignatedCommunity is definedbythe Archiveandthisdefinitionmaychange over time.
20. RepresentationInformation
The information thatmapsa Data Object intomore meaningfulconcepts. An exampleof RepresentationInformation fora bit sequencewhichis a FITS file mightconsistof the FITS standard whichdefinesthe format plus a dictionarywhichdefinesthe meaningin the file of keywordswhichare notpart of the standard.
Anotherexampleis JPEG software whichis usedtorendera JPEG file; renderingthe JPEG file as bits is notverymeaningfultohumansbut the software, whichembodiesanunderstandingof the JPEG standard, mapsthe bits intopixels whichcanthenberenderedas animage forhuman viewing.
21. Example
Digital object: Digitized Mediaeval charter
Designated community: historians (mediaevalists)
Representation information:
•
Digital image in PDF -> JPEG standard ; JPEG software
•
Transcription in PDF -> PDF standard ; PDF viewer
•
Content in Latin -> English –Latin Dictionary
•
Annotations in XML -> ASCII Standard
•
….
22. Hands on
Take a digital object as anexample
Thisobject has tobepreserved
•
First givea descriptionof the digital object
•
Describethe DesignatedCommunity (whichassumptionsdo youmake?)
•
WhichRepresentationInformation is requiredin order forthe DesignatedCommunity tobeableto understandthe digital object?
