The document discusses four examples of racism found in media. In a Family Guy episode, the black character Cleveland is beaten when arrested by a vehicle, while the white character Peter is gently arrested. A political cartoon depicted Obama as an ape-like figure. In a math class, a boy commented on Asian students' test scores. A South Park episode portrayed middle-class residents trying to force rich black residents out of town by pretending to be ghosts.
Racism in Media Discussed: TV, Cartoons, Classroom Examples
1. Racism on Media Discussion
In society today there is racism everywhere we look; in the magazines, on the television,
in the music we listen to, ect. Whether we realize it or not, we face discrimination and racism
on a daily basis. I went home after class today and found a series of places where discrimination
and racism took place:
1. Family Guy: In this episode, Lois meets up with her old boyfriend who happens
to have a super vehicle that can arrest people. He tries it on peter as the car
gently arrests him. When Cleveland (who is black) tries it, he then gets beaten.
2. Political Cartoon in the weekly newspaper: A cartoon of Obama, drawn as an
ape-like cartoon character. This cartoon was comparing an African American
man to an ape.
3. Today in math class: I witnessed an act of racism today myself in math class
when a Caucasian boy looked at an Asian girls test score and said “Figures, I bet
all the Asians in here got A’s.” Although the girl didn’t seem to take the comment
to heart and the boy probably didn’t mean too much by it, but its comments like
these that make racism and discrimination made ‘okay’ in today’s society.
4. South Park: In episode 12 of the 5th season, Here Comes the Neighborhood, The
title is a play on the expression ‘There Goes the Neighborhood.’ The middle class
people of South Park do not like the rich people (who all happen to be black). So
they try ways to get them out of town such as pretending to be ghosts (kkk), it
spoofs the whole racial movement of the 1960's only with rich people (even
though the rich people are black).
