Editor's Notes
Season 13 of The Friday Zone has been very exciting! We’ve grown the brand of both the show, but also of WTIU Kids.
We’ve been extremely busy over 26 episodes, meeting dozens of local businesses and organizations and featuring over a hundred kids on-screen.
Season 13 has seen a significant expansion of WTIU Kids and The Friday Zone online.
The mission of The Friday Zone is to serve Indiana’s kids, but we’re also a valuable part of Indiana University, offering students practical experience in television production and integrating our content creation into student coursework. In addition, we provide thousands of hours experience to E&PS paid hourly crew.
One of our most exciting developments during Season 13 is a partnership with the IUB School of Nursing. We will grow this partnership in Season 14…
“Feel Good Felix” segments were written and performed by over 80 IUB School of Nursing students – integrating The Friday Zone into their curriculum.Joyce Splann Krothe PhD RNProfessor & Assistant DeanDesiree Hensel, PhD, RN, CNS, CNEAssistant Professor
We had a wonderful experience with new production supporter IU Health Southern Indiana Pediatrics, resulting in a renewal of support for Season 14. These production support dollars haveallowed The Friday Zone to really make an impact in outreach and awareness for the show and for WTIU in general…
Production Support dollars and student involvement have enabled us to create and staff a “booth” that can promote The Friday Zone at area events.Photo:Book Patrol –Children’s Programming on WTIU is moving beyond just FZ - helping brand our entire PBS Kids schedule with local content that will include our local kids.
What’s happening next for WTIU Children’s Programming (hint: It’s more than just The Friday Zone)?Joke Time with Davy and Jack – a new series of 26 interstitialsBook Patrol – a new series of interstitials coming to the WTIU Kids’ line up that will feature kid book reviews a’la Reading RainbowPBS Kids GO! Writers Contest – animating student stories from elementary schools across the stateMartin and the Alien Mice – a recurring FZ series teaching story structure and theatre terminologyWord Songs – original music videos that define fun vocabulary wordsIU College Mentors – a partnership to bring at-risk kids into the studio, creating brand loyalty in Hoosier kids who most need a positive media influence.
We’ve had a great year in The Friday Zone and everyone in RTVS should be proud to be a part of Indiana’s only kids series! And Next year is sure to be even better, so please come down to room 186 anytime to talk about our plans or if you have ideas you’d like to share!
