A muchos

8. Slice of Britain

pagar desplazamientos a Inglaterra, alojamiento, manutención etc.

Pedagogical rationale
The Slice of Britain Summer School is a new and exciting course of English Language Learning
for children. Lessons are delivered by native English speakers who have worked in an English
primary school and been carefully trained in the Slice of Britain pedagogical method.
The syllabus is divided into four weekly topics which have been carefully chosen so that they
reflect English life and culture.
The topics are as follows:
Week one: At school in England
Week two: An invitation to an English tea party
Week three: Famous British people
Week four: Getting ready for the Summer holidays
The language used in each of these topics is cumulative which enables the children to build
vocabulary and speaking skills as the course progresses.

The learning environment
Slice of Britain makes every effort to ensure that our classrooms are interesting and
stimulating. We aim to transport a little bit of England to the Spanish classrooms.
We believe that it is important to decorate the classrooms with English posters,
flags and displays which provide a welcoming environment for the children before
they arrive in class.
One of our successes has been the creation of a Language Tree on the wall of each
classroom where the children can place new words or phrases that they have
learnt.
Routines
Slice of Britain establishes very early on routines in the classroom. These routines
help to make the children feel secure and confident and promote cooperation
between pupil and teacher.

“Let England come to you!”
21. Slice of Britain
The characteristic routines which Slice of Britain uses are:
Lining up in the playground after the whistle has been blown at the end of break-
time.
Following the Teacher in a single file into the classroom
Circle time/carpet time at the start and at the end of the day
Taking the register. The weather. Birthdays
Show and Tell
What happened yesterday?
What are we going to do today?
Listening and Speaking skills
The emphasis is very much on developing Listening and Speaking skills and the
Teachers will use a variety of methods to engage the children's attention. The
children will take part in a range of communicative games, story-telling activities,
drama lessons, art and craft and songs and rhymes all conducted in English.

Daily parcels
Slice of Britain encourages the children to achieve a manageable target every day
and to tell their parents about it when they get home. Parcels are something that
the children learn in class and then take home to their parents like a present at the
end of the day. It may be an English song, a poem or a rhyme, a new phrase or
sentence, a playground game or something they have made. These Learning
Parcels are recorded in "MY LOOK WHAT I CAN DO BOOK".
Circle Time
This is a typically English way of starting and finishing the school day in Primary
schools. It gives everyone time to recap what they have learnt that day and is a
good opportunity to use the past tense.

MY ENGLISH BOX
In English Primary Schools the children have a tray in which they store all their
work. We ask the Spanish Parents to provide an empty cardboard box and any
English pictures from magazines or newspapers so that the children can decorate
their box on the first day.
BARNABY the BEAR
Very often Primary School children will have a class Teddy Bear Mascot which they
can take home for the evening to their homes to be part of the family. During Circle
Time the next day, the child recounts what BARNABY the BEAR has been doing! We
often get photos of BARNABY sitting at the dinner table with the family which is
very amusing. This exercise provides a wonderful opportunity to talk in the past
tense. We make this exercise optional, as some of the older children may not want
to take part.

Rewards
In English schools reward systems are very important both at Primary and at
Secondary level.
Rewards are recorded in the "LOOK WHAT I CAN DO BOOK", which parents are
encouraged to look at each evening if possible. Your child may be awarded a Weekly
Star Pupil certificate or a Daily Star of the Day badge which is given out during Circle
Time at the end of the day.
Raffle Ticket awards
All age groups of Children love these. If a child says or does something really well,
the teacher writes their name on a raffle ticket and places it in a box. At the end of
the week Presentation on Friday afternoon the tickets are drawn out of the box and
the child wins a prize.
End of the week presentation
Parents are invited to attend a short Presentation on Friday afternoons to see what
their children have achieved.
