Advantages Of English As A Global Language
English as a global language is breaking the barrier in communication and exchange of cross–cultural
information. According to David Crystal in the book "English as a Global Language" (2003), he
states that "language has no independent existence, living in some sort of mystical space apart from
the people who speak it. Language exists only in the brains and mouths and ears and hands and eyes
of its users. When they succeed, on the international stage, their language succeeds. When they fail,
their language fails" (p. 7). People around the world choose to speak English for a certain reason.
Countries that are using the English as a global language are more advanced in business, economy,
and internet users.
English is the language of business. Wanted or not a competitive company is the one that can
represent themselves and be competitive internationally. To do that, biggest international companies
are hiring people with good English communication skills that are able to compete globally with
other. For example, in the article "Global Business Speaks English", Neeley (2012) assert that
companies that are not speaking a global language are putting themselves in a disadvantaged
situation. In order to progress and boost the company, you must be able to exchange information
with buyers and potential partners (para. 9). In other words, it is easier to run a business when every
one is sharing the same language. Moreover, is eliminating confusion and misunderstandings when
English is used. In the article "What Global Language?", Barbara Wallraff infers that in some
countries, the English language is having a special place and meaning. For example, in India, the
government gave authorization that the English language to be used in business together with other
languages (para.19). It is clear that government is understanding the benefits of using the English
language in business to grow the economy of the country and the wealth of the population.
In the same way, English is beneficial to the economy. Most people around the world are
understanding the necessity of knowing a lingua franca in special if English is not your first
language. Speaking in English is giving you great job opportunities in your country and abroad.

English As A Global Language Essay
Reestablishing English as a Global Language Abstract Information Technology has brought
forward a new wave of acquiring knowledge worldwide. Since the concept of Globalization came
into existence, the world is in immediate want of a standard language to deal with this high speed
transmitted knowledge. English is one of the sole language that has travelled worldwide and is
known to many. Though it is not the language largely spoken by people, it nevertheless has made
technology, its use and communication possible through its naturally adaptable and flexible
approach. Leaving aside all the barriers of the importance of regional languages, their existence
and extinction, this paper will try attempt and discuss how one common language, English could
contribute significantly to the age of Computer as one world. Keywords : English, technology,
communication, globalization, language, skills,"English is necessary as at present original
works of science are in English. I believe that in two decades times original works of science will
start coming out in our languages. Then we can move over like the Japanese."1 A reality we have
to face worldwide is to accept that the present time indeed is a computer age and the world has
become a global village. Since the boundaries have shrunk with the advance of technology, an
immediate need to have a common language of expression has arisen. Because of the colonies
established by the English at each corner of the world instinctively

English As A Global Language
It is an undeniable fact that English is recognised as a global language and an important lingua
franca in the world. English as a Global Language emphasizes that a language achieves a genuinely
global status when it develops a special role that is recognised in every country (Crystal 2003) (p.3).
In achieving this status, Crystal describes that the language has to use by other countries around the
world and receive a special position within that foreign communities despite of having their own
mother tongue languages. Crystal further added that there are several ways in which a language
can be official for example it may be the sole official language of a country, or it may share this
status with other languages, and it may be in form of 'semi–official' status as it only being used in
certain domains, or taking second place to other languages while still performing certain official
roles. The main reason for this great demand to be proficient in English is because of its dominant
role in current international trade, education, and medium of communication around the globe.
Therefore, it gives huge impact to many non–English speaking countries and it automatically makes
English teaching and learning an important issue in their educational system just to ensure that their
citizen are competent in using this target language. This awareness, has been actively promoted by
the governments of many ESL (English as a second language) and EFL (English as a foreign
language) countries

English as a Global Language
English is fast becoming the dominant means by which the world is able to communicate. It is
being referred to as the global language as it is seen as a common means for interaction between
different countries. This new phenomena can be seen in a positive light because the use of English
as a common language brings efficiency and greater understanding. Growth and development are not
tolerant of differences and English becomes a means for international expansion. Nonetheless this
also brings with it a development which "gobbles up cultures and traditions".
In South East Asia, as a result of English becoming a kind of global currency, there is a large turn
towards acquiring language skills not in any language...show more content...
With the growth of English and globalization, small communities are becoming inundated with
English media. This media results in people hearing more English than other languages. There are
more English translations than any other languages. Increasingly people are writing in English in
order to appeal to a world market and in doing so producing writing which is more western and
does not encapsulate the different experiences of story telling which differ so considerably from
culture to culture. World literature, because of the increased use of English as a global language
becomes English literature
In sum the global nature of English is linked with a loss of individuality. The unique nature of
language, culture, tradition and literature can become lost in response to the wave of western
English culture and language. Personally I have no idea where this new movement may leave
us. It is a great shame that individuality may be lost, as is alluded to in this article, in the strive for
a growth and a more convenient world. Nonetheless I do see advantages gathered from the use of
English as a dominant medium. I do believe that there is room in all this for a compromise
between local culture and language and that the global use of English which does not necessarily
mean the loss of one and gain of the other. As an English teacher and a native English speaker it is
important to bear in mind these aspects of the

A Global Language English Language
In the article (A Global Language English Language Essay) the author explained what a global
language, and what makes a certain language to be a global language. The author believes that
English is a global language. There are many factors that coincide with the author's opinion. The
author had a lot of points that proved that English truly is a global language. The author demonstrated
his facts with a cohesive argument, using logos and ethos, however due to this being a more
research–based article, there is little to no pathos. In the following paragraphs I will analyze the
article and show what kind of rhetorical appeals the author used to further prove his argument.
A global language is a language that is spoken universally throughout many countries. A language
is considered to be a global language when it is learned by a plethora of people. The most popular
one being English. A wide range of English vocabulary was taken from other European countries.
Famous linguist David Crystal argues that languages have a strong relation between dominance and
cultural power. The main reason that the languages exist is because of a strong power–base, political
and military or economic. (A Global Language, 2016). The author uses logos to persuade the reader
through historical facts and by quoting famous linguists. He is explaining that the reason for the
English language being so prominent throughout the world is due its dominance worldwide, this will
be explained in greater detail in

Pros And Cons Of English As A Global Language
A global language is a language that is spoken internationally and used for communication between
people with different mother tongue. It is a language which is common as a first or a second
language that many people speak or understand. English is one of the most common global
languages and it has evolved naturally. It is used and understood in different degrees by over a
billion people, and it seems like it's spreading more and more. English came to Britain from northern
Europe during the fifth century and the language spread to the Asian, African and American
continents with the expeditions and colorizations. Through one of the expeditions, they found

We live in a global world where it's very important that we are able to communicate with people that
have another mother tongue than us. Since English is a global language, and used as a second
language by many people, it can be used to communicate across borders, to exchange information,
for working together and to understand each other. English can then be used to spread
technology and information to later generations so that it can be understood and used later.
English is also an easy language to learn and understand compared to for example Russian,
Chinese, and Japanese. Because it is easy, we can begin early to learn English. The English we
learn at school doesn't help us to communicate fluently in English, but it surely helps to understand
and make ourselves understood. English has become a big part when it comes to different
occupations. If you can use it well within your occupation, you'll get better opportunities and you'll
be able to work everywhere. On the other hand, English as a global language can be negative for
those who don't know it that well. Many people from the older generations have difficulties when it
comes to jobs, because they don't understand or speak it well. There are less opportunities for them
when it comes to jobs. English is spreading all over the world, and I think therefore that other
languages disappear. The English is "taking over" and the other languages don't get the possibility to
develop. I also think that English makes cultures disappear because we can only know cultures
through learning the language. And when we don't learn other languages than English, we don't
learn about the culture, and the culture disappears more and

Language spoken by different people of different nations is an international language. Society is
made by a group of people who share the common values and culture. The process in which they

spoken in this world is estimated to be in between three to eight thousand. English language ranks
only behind Spanish and Chinese Mandarin in terms of the first language used by people. However,

Mr. Crystal starts his informational book about English as a Global Language by giving
examples of how often we see the english language around our daily lives in the United States
and other countries around the world. He proves this by saying, "Wherever you travel, you see
English signs and advertisements. Whenever you enter a hotel or restaurant in a foreign city,
they will understand English, and there will always be an English manu." I personally think this
is an awesome example of how English is a global language and it is a great way to get his audience

David Crystal traces the movement of English with start of the the movement of English into
English and how it spread out from there. The first major movement of English was the colonization
of the original 13 colonies across the Atlantic but would be know as the United States. The most
important detail that I got from this topic was, " Within one or two generations of arrival, most of
these immigrant faiise had come to speak English through a natural process of assimilation. Crystal
is referring the massive immigrants that came in the 19th century that came from various European
background and most of the immigrants learned English leading to a massive spike in English
speaking. The United States affected multiple countries with it's English speaking, including Canada.
After the colonist won the American Revolution in 1776, the Loyalist British moved north to
Canada. This brought influx of English speakers to Canada and led the spread of English into
Canada. Every where the English sailed and colonized it brought the English Language, and it was
important to the local economy to learn that language so it could communicate back to England.
This happened around the world including South Africa, Australia, some Caribbean Islands, and
New Zealand. According to Crystal's Book, you can describe the spread of the English Language in

In why a Global Language, author David Crystal explains what a global language is, how English
has become the global language of today, and also why it is important for the world to have a global

The article begins with David Crystal going explaining how English is the global language today.
He explains how English is everywhere, it can be found all around the world, even headlines in
other countries are written in English. From here David switches views and shows the reader that

This is known as the trading language for this area. He then talks about the UN and how it was
started using 5 official languages and that there is a widespread view that it would make sense to
reduce the number of languages in the UN. This is to try and reduce the cost of translations and
clerical work. But who could it offend? What language should be removed? This would cause
problems as countries are proud to have their own language and be allowed to use it freely. So
people decided to come together and have a 'working language.' English is becoming this language.
David then talks about the dangers of a global language. People who have English as their native
language could use this manipulate someone who has English as their second language. They can
think quicker and maybe use some words that they know the other person wouldn't know. He also
says that maybe with the presence of a global language, people may get lazy to learn another one or
even to learn English properly. A global language could also help to wipe out smaller languages as
the younger people would be using English more than their native language. David then gives
examples that a global language doesn't automatically mean harmony among the people or
understanding. As also with countries that have mixed languages, it doesn't automatically mean they
have problems. In the next part of the book, David talks about linguistic power, linguistic
complacency and

Is English a Global Language? Essay
English is the Global Language of today. There is great controversy circumventing this view.
Although there are positive outcomes, the negatives outbalance them to some extent as it means that
many languages will die out as a result. As a global lingua franca, English has the puissance to
enhance communication between individuals, being particularly favourable and propitious in the
area of economics and trade. Despite this, it has persistently been the substratum for the death of
numerous other languages, consequently posing a threat to identity, and the value of language and
culture. English is the only Global Language and other languages cannot compete with it. Thus,

another significant advantage of the death of all languages, except English, is the improvement of
business. This is highlighted in the statement by Hale and Basides, "English is...considered to be an
asset, economically (for instance)" (2013, Pg.7). In economics, English is the main language and
the more advanced an individuals understanding of the language is, the more business opportunities
they will encompass. Additionally, international investments from wealthy, developed countries
may include less wealthy countries, as they will be able to understand each other and
communicate to collaborate on ideas for new ventures and schemes. International trade will also
be broadened if the English Language were to cause the death of all other languages. Trade
prospects and opportunities will also increase, as one language spoken globally would be
beneficial to an efficient form of communication among nations. As economics and trade will
accordingly benefit from only one Global Language, being English, conflicts and warfare between
countries may cease for this reason and also if language barriers were no longer an issue. Therefore,
it is clear that the death of languages, caused by English,

In this paper, I argue if our modern–day society needs a global language such as English. English as
a global language is necessary because it is more efficient, globalization, and most people already
have some knowledge of English. English is of great importance in many places around the world,
for this reason, it would be an excellent candidate to be the world's lingua franca, or a global

English is of importance to become our universal language, because with the globalized society we
live in, communication among different groups of people, has become increasingly important in the
last 25 years. According to Statista.com, "1,500 million people worldwide speak English, of whom
only 375 million are native speakers" 1.5 billion people speak English, that's 20% of the world that
can already communicate with each other. One of the biggest reasons for English to be the world's

mankind have humans been more interconnected than they are right now due to the internet. With
the rise of the internet in the past 20 years, English quickly became the dominant language of the
World Wide Web. Due to this, if everyone had the ability to have one common language, it would

English Essay: English As A Global Language
The English Language
A language that is spoken internationally is called "Global" or "World" language. A global language
is a language in which people speak internationally on a daily basis, in international organizations
and diplomatic relations. It is a "lingua franca", a language that helps people from different
backgrounds to communicate with each other. Not many languages that have been established in
human history have reached to the point in which they are called a global language, amongst those
few languages is English. Approximately 2 billion people around the world use English as a native
language, a second language or a foreign language. English is used for many causes, such as;
technical and scientific communication, education and employment.
The reason why English is a global language is because people tend to learn easier languages.
English is a language that doesn't use complex grammar and can be consumed relatively easy.
Moreover, there are no grammatical differences between different genders and it consists of less

but to my surprise English language is not the same all over the world. I was lost in English
translation when I arrived in the United States of America from Nigeria.
I was born and raised in the Eastern part of Nigeria. Nigeria is located in the western part of Africa
and it is the most populous country in Africa lined with trees to create a beautiful landscape. Nigeria
has about twenty different dialects and native languages. People with different native languages have
to communicate in English language to understand each other.
In 1960, Nigeria gained its independence from the British government. English became the official
language of Nigeria after the colonial rule of the British government. There are different dialects of
English language in Nigeria. The pigeon English (broken English) is the commonly used language.
Those that were not educated were able to speak the pigeon English. Then, there is the correct
English which are spoken by those who were educated. As a high school graduate, I belong to the
correct English group.
I earned my high school diploma when I graduated from high school in Nigeria. For one to earn a

Essay Of English As A Global Language
Language is an apparatus enabling people to interact with each other (Wright, 1999). Education,
trade and economics all contribute to the development of a language, being globally recognised.
Linguistics enables individuals to learn, teach and to develop their own unique dialect that would
help them to communicate with people. Due to globalization, English is the only global language
used internationally for economic, political and business reasons and no other languages can
compete against it due to having military, economic and political power. Despite English as a global

However, linguist mixed the community and people did not rely on people translating anymore.
Hence this issue was solved by Pidgin and Lingua Franca. The term Pidgin is defined as a mixture
of distinct languages being able to communicate with another. Furthermore, the advancement and
growth of English expands globally. For example, English dominates academic books, media and
technology. Even though languages are being wiped off due to having one global language, people
choose to learn English; for example most popular and awaited movies are from English films even
though Bollywood tries to compete with Hollywood – Hollywood is still coming first in the ladder
for best film production. Moreover, due to the increasing usage of internet, the strength of English
language becomes enforceable in the computer. The economic and trade amongst countries is also
accomplished by English, also Food packages that individuals eat and gadget that people use all have

population is "reasonably competent" as it is helpful in the fields of economy, politics and commerce
allowing individuals to gain employment opportunities when fluent in English. Political bodies,
economic power and many commercial institutions all use English language as a source of
communication. Trudgill, (2000) stated that more than 80% of academic, scientific and technological

English as a Global Language English is a lingua franca (ELF) where the use of English language is
a "common language between speakers whose native languages are different" (Merriam–Webster
Dictionary 2015). However, this does not mean that ELF interactions are speaking what is
considered proper English, but whether or not they effectively communicate. This does not exclude
native speakers, but rather it places emphasis on the interactions between persons of different mother
tongues and cultural backgrounds. While other scholars argue that ELF neutrality is cultural free or
not (House 2003), HГјlmbauer (2007) views it as multicultural because "it seems likely that the ELF
users develop their own markers of identity (be they of a common 'European' or 'international' nature
or more individual ones which are created online, depending on the community of practice they are
emerging in)." More often than not, ELF interactions stay between non–native speakers where native
speakers make up the minority (Paradowski 2008). When discussing ELF interactions, there is this
notion that that speakers of ELF feel as though they do not have to adhere to native speaker norms,
but only use it accommodate to their communicative needs (Firth 1996). Linguistic expert Braj

Introduction & Background of the study English as the foreign language in Kurdistan is taught from
the first year of School up to the university level. The Audio–Lingual system, which was proposed by
American etymologists in 1950s, was created from the guideline that a dialect is most importantly an
arrangement of correspondence; sounds for social composing is an optional subsidiary framework
for the recording of communicates dialect (Carroll, 1963). Consequently, the reason for the
Audio–Lingual strategy is to utilize the target dialect openly. As for each this strategy, discourse is
given need in outside dialect educating. The Audio Lingual method shows dialect through dialogues

propensities for their local dialect). The Audio–Lingual system considered dialect basically as
appearance of conduct to be learned through the arrangement of right discourse propensities
(Thornbury, 2000). As such, the objective of this technique is to frame local dialect propensities in
learners (Dendrinos, 1992). Likewise Richards and Rodgers push that outside dialect learning is
essentially a procedure of mechanical propensity arrangement, and great propensities are shaped by
giving right reactions rather than by committing errors (2001). Dialogues and example bores that

English As A World Language Essay

  • 1. Advantages Of English As A Global Language English as a global language is breaking the barrier in communication and exchange of cross–cultural information. According to David Crystal in the book "English as a Global Language" (2003), he states that "language has no independent existence, living in some sort of mystical space apart from the people who speak it. Language exists only in the brains and mouths and ears and hands and eyes of its users. When they succeed, on the international stage, their language succeeds. When they fail, their language fails" (p. 7). People around the world choose to speak English for a certain reason. Countries that are using the English as a global language are more advanced in business, economy, and internet users. English is the language of business. Wanted or not a competitive company is the one that can represent themselves and be competitive internationally. To do that, biggest international companies are hiring people with good English communication skills that are able to compete globally with other. For example, in the article "Global Business Speaks English", Neeley (2012) assert that companies that are not speaking a global language are putting themselves in a disadvantaged situation. In order to progress and boost the company, you must be able to exchange information with buyers and potential partners (para. 9). In other words, it is easier to run a business when every one is sharing the same language. Moreover, is eliminating confusion and misunderstandings when English is used. In the article "What Global Language?", Barbara Wallraff infers that in some countries, the English language is having a special place and meaning. For example, in India, the government gave authorization that the English language to be used in business together with other languages (para.19). It is clear that government is understanding the benefits of using the English language in business to grow the economy of the country and the wealth of the population. In the same way, English is beneficial to the economy. Most people around the world are understanding the necessity of knowing a lingua franca in special if English is not your first language. Speaking in English is giving you great job opportunities in your country and abroad. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 3. English As A Global Language Essay Reestablishing English as a Global Language Abstract Information Technology has brought forward a new wave of acquiring knowledge worldwide. Since the concept of Globalization came into existence, the world is in immediate want of a standard language to deal with this high speed transmitted knowledge. English is one of the sole language that has travelled worldwide and is known to many. Though it is not the language largely spoken by people, it nevertheless has made technology, its use and communication possible through its naturally adaptable and flexible approach. Leaving aside all the barriers of the importance of regional languages, their existence and extinction, this paper will try attempt and discuss how one common language, English could contribute significantly to the age of Computer as one world. Keywords : English, technology, communication, globalization, language, skills,"English is necessary as at present original works of science are in English. I believe that in two decades times original works of science will start coming out in our languages. Then we can move over like the Japanese."1 A reality we have to face worldwide is to accept that the present time indeed is a computer age and the world has become a global village. Since the boundaries have shrunk with the advance of technology, an immediate need to have a common language of expression has arisen. Because of the colonies established by the English at each corner of the world instinctively Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. English As A Global Language It is an undeniable fact that English is recognised as a global language and an important lingua franca in the world. English as a Global Language emphasizes that a language achieves a genuinely global status when it develops a special role that is recognised in every country (Crystal 2003) (p.3). In achieving this status, Crystal describes that the language has to use by other countries around the world and receive a special position within that foreign communities despite of having their own mother tongue languages. Crystal further added that there are several ways in which a language can be official for example it may be the sole official language of a country, or it may share this status with other languages, and it may be in form of 'semi–official' status as it only being used in certain domains, or taking second place to other languages while still performing certain official roles. The main reason for this great demand to be proficient in English is because of its dominant role in current international trade, education, and medium of communication around the globe. Therefore, it gives huge impact to many non–English speaking countries and it automatically makes English teaching and learning an important issue in their educational system just to ensure that their citizen are competent in using this target language. This awareness, has been actively promoted by the governments of many ESL (English as a second language) and EFL (English as a foreign language) countries Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. English as a Global Language English as a Global Language English is fast becoming the dominant means by which the world is able to communicate. It is being referred to as the global language as it is seen as a common means for interaction between different countries. This new phenomena can be seen in a positive light because the use of English as a common language brings efficiency and greater understanding. Growth and development are not tolerant of differences and English becomes a means for international expansion. Nonetheless this also brings with it a development which "gobbles up cultures and traditions". In South East Asia, as a result of English becoming a kind of global currency, there is a large turn towards acquiring language skills not in any language...show more content... With the growth of English and globalization, small communities are becoming inundated with English media. This media results in people hearing more English than other languages. There are more English translations than any other languages. Increasingly people are writing in English in order to appeal to a world market and in doing so producing writing which is more western and does not encapsulate the different experiences of story telling which differ so considerably from culture to culture. World literature, because of the increased use of English as a global language becomes English literature In sum the global nature of English is linked with a loss of individuality. The unique nature of language, culture, tradition and literature can become lost in response to the wave of western English culture and language. Personally I have no idea where this new movement may leave us. It is a great shame that individuality may be lost, as is alluded to in this article, in the strive for a growth and a more convenient world. Nonetheless I do see advantages gathered from the use of English as a dominant medium. I do believe that there is room in all this for a compromise between local culture and language and that the global use of English which does not necessarily mean the loss of one and gain of the other. As an English teacher and a native English speaker it is important to bear in mind these aspects of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. A Global Language English Language In the article (A Global Language English Language Essay) the author explained what a global language, and what makes a certain language to be a global language. The author believes that English is a global language. There are many factors that coincide with the author's opinion. The author had a lot of points that proved that English truly is a global language. The author demonstrated his facts with a cohesive argument, using logos and ethos, however due to this being a more research–based article, there is little to no pathos. In the following paragraphs I will analyze the article and show what kind of rhetorical appeals the author used to further prove his argument. A global language is a language that is spoken universally throughout many countries. A language is considered to be a global language when it is learned by a plethora of people. The most popular one being English. A wide range of English vocabulary was taken from other European countries. Famous linguist David Crystal argues that languages have a strong relation between dominance and cultural power. The main reason that the languages exist is because of a strong power–base, political and military or economic. (A Global Language, 2016). The author uses logos to persuade the reader through historical facts and by quoting famous linguists. He is explaining that the reason for the English language being so prominent throughout the world is due its dominance worldwide, this will be explained in greater detail in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Pros And Cons Of English As A Global Language A global language is a language that is spoken internationally and used for communication between people with different mother tongue. It is a language which is common as a first or a second language that many people speak or understand. English is one of the most common global languages and it has evolved naturally. It is used and understood in different degrees by over a billion people, and it seems like it's spreading more and more. English came to Britain from northern Europe during the fifth century and the language spread to the Asian, African and American continents with the expeditions and colorizations. Through one of the expeditions, they found Australia. The found of Australia couldn't have been discovered at a better time....show more content... We live in a global world where it's very important that we are able to communicate with people that have another mother tongue than us. Since English is a global language, and used as a second language by many people, it can be used to communicate across borders, to exchange information, for working together and to understand each other. English can then be used to spread technology and information to later generations so that it can be understood and used later. English is also an easy language to learn and understand compared to for example Russian, Chinese, and Japanese. Because it is easy, we can begin early to learn English. The English we learn at school doesn't help us to communicate fluently in English, but it surely helps to understand and make ourselves understood. English has become a big part when it comes to different occupations. If you can use it well within your occupation, you'll get better opportunities and you'll be able to work everywhere. On the other hand, English as a global language can be negative for those who don't know it that well. Many people from the older generations have difficulties when it comes to jobs, because they don't understand or speak it well. There are less opportunities for them when it comes to jobs. English is spreading all over the world, and I think therefore that other languages disappear. The English is "taking over" and the other languages don't get the possibility to develop. I also think that English makes cultures disappear because we can only know cultures through learning the language. And when we don't learn other languages than English, we don't learn about the culture, and the culture disappears more and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. English As An International Language Essay Language spoken by different people of different nations is an international language. Society is made by a group of people who share the common values and culture. The process in which they interact and they relate information to each other to create a value in terms of efficiency and understanding is communication; through a common language. The total number of languages spoken in this world is estimated to be in between three to eight thousand. English language ranks only behind Spanish and Chinese Mandarin in terms of the first language used by people. However, the number of people who understand and can communicate in English is probably among the highest in the world leaving any languages far behind. • 9. English As A Global Language Chapter One Summary Mr. Crystal starts his informational book about English as a Global Language by giving examples of how often we see the english language around our daily lives in the United States and other countries around the world. He proves this by saying, "Wherever you travel, you see English signs and advertisements. Whenever you enter a hotel or restaurant in a foreign city, they will understand English, and there will always be an English manu." I personally think this is an awesome example of how English is a global language and it is a great way to get his audience to relate to his book. David Crystal traces the movement of English with start of the the movement of English into English and how it spread out from there. The first major movement of English was the colonization of the original 13 colonies across the Atlantic but would be know as the United States. The most important detail that I got from this topic was, " Within one or two generations of arrival, most of these immigrant faiise had come to speak English through a natural process of assimilation. Crystal is referring the massive immigrants that came in the 19th century that came from various European background and most of the immigrants learned English leading to a massive spike in English speaking. The United States affected multiple countries with it's English speaking, including Canada. After the colonist won the American Revolution in 1776, the Loyalist British moved north to Canada. This brought influx of English speakers to Canada and led the spread of English into Canada. Every where the English sailed and colonized it brought the English Language, and it was important to the local economy to learn that language so it could communicate back to England. This happened around the world including South Africa, Australia, some Caribbean Islands, and New Zealand. English as a global language – 2nd edition – David Crystal Chapter 1 summary In why a Global Language, author David Crystal explains what a global language is, how English has become the global language of today, and also why it is important for the world to have a global language. The article begins with David Crystal going explaining how English is the global language today. He explains how English is everywhere, it can be found all around the world, even headlines in other countries are written in English. From here David switches views and shows the reader that not everyone understands English, others all around the world, view English differently. He then talks about the UN and how it was started using 5 official languages and that there is a widespread view that it would make sense to reduce the number of languages in the UN. This is to try and reduce the cost of translations and clerical work. But who could it offend? What language should be removed? This would cause problems as countries are proud to have their own language and be allowed to use it freely. So people decided to come together and have a 'working language.' English is becoming this language. David then talks about the dangers of a global language. People who have English as their native language could use this manipulate someone who has English as their second language. They can think quicker and maybe use some words that they know the other person wouldn't know. He also says that maybe with the presence of a global language, people may get lazy to learn another one or even to learn English properly. A global language could also help to wipe out smaller languages as the younger people would be using English more than their native language. David then gives examples that a global language doesn't automatically mean harmony among the people or understanding. As also with countries that have mixed languages, it doesn't automatically mean they have problems. • 11. Is English a Global Language? Essay English is the Global Language of today. There is great controversy circumventing this view. Although there are positive outcomes, the negatives outbalance them to some extent as it means that many languages will die out as a result. As a global lingua franca, English has the puissance to enhance communication between individuals, being particularly favourable and propitious in the area of economics and trade. Despite this, it has persistently been the substratum for the death of numerous other languages, consequently posing a threat to identity, and the value of language and culture. English is the Global language of today and will continue to eradicate other languages. Furthermore, another significant advantage of the death of all languages, except English, is the improvement of business. This is highlighted in the statement by Hale and Basides, "English is...considered to be an asset, economically (for instance)" (2013, Pg.7). In economics, English is the main language and the more advanced an individuals understanding of the language is, the more business opportunities they will encompass. Additionally, international investments from wealthy, developed countries may include less wealthy countries, as they will be able to understand each other and communicate to collaborate on ideas for new ventures and schemes. International trade will also be broadened if the English Language were to cause the death of all other languages. Trade prospects and opportunities will also increase, as one language spoken globally would be beneficial to an efficient form of communication among nations. As economics and trade will accordingly benefit from only one Global Language, being English, conflicts and warfare between countries may cease for this reason and also if language barriers were no longer an issue. English as a Global Language English as a global language English is spoken in most parts of the world, for instance in Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and in many more countries. Moreover in African states English serves as main form of communication. English is, after the Chinese one, the language most people speak and it is the most popular second language and foreign language pupils learn in school. The English language is often named as a "killer language" that wipes out smaller languages and their cultures by exclusive use (f. e.: media, economy). The leaders followed the French or English only (or mainly) language policies after formal independence from the colonial rule. Most of these countries returned to their mother – tongue within. Prof. Alexander Neville thinks, that if additive bilingualism is carried out systematically but flexibly, there should be a high level of literacy in Africa in the course of the next century (1 African language and at least some fluency in English for all Africans). African schools could normalise (competent language teachers like most countries of the world). We think this is a rather optimistic view. But what is the right way to learn a language? In the Internet Research there are some conditions quoted as important to learn a 2nd language: Teachers' language proficiency Teachers' competence as teachers (understand and overcome pupils' problems) Exposure to the language outside the classroom Adequate textbooks and material There's a need for one or two world languages in the fields of trade, technology and diplomacy. English as a global language is necessary because it is more efficient, globalization, and most people already have some knowledge of English. English is of great importance in many places around the world, for this reason, it would be an excellent candidate to be the world's lingua franca, or a global language. English is of importance to become our universal language, because with the globalized society we live in, communication among different groups of people, has become increasingly important in the last 25 years. According to Statista.com, "1,500 million people worldwide speak English, of whom only 375 million are native speakers" 1.5 billion people speak English, that's 20% of the world that can already communicate with each other. One of the biggest reasons for English to be the world's lingua franca, is because of media, such as phones, tv, books, and the internet. Never in the history of mankind have humans been more interconnected than they are right now due to the internet. With the rise of the internet in the past 20 years, English quickly became the dominant language of the World Wide Web. • 17. English As A Universal Language Lost in Translation Coming to United States of America have changed my conception about English being a universal language. I was taught that English language is the same English Language anywhere in the world, but to my surprise English language is not the same all over the world. I was lost in English translation when I arrived in the United States of America from Nigeria. I was born and raised in the Eastern part of Nigeria. Nigeria is located in the western part of Africa and it is the most populous country in Africa lined with trees to create a beautiful landscape. Nigeria has about twenty different dialects and native languages. People with different native languages have to communicate in English language to understand each other. In 1960, Nigeria gained its independence from the British government. English became the official language of Nigeria after the colonial rule of the British government. There are different dialects of English language in Nigeria. The pigeon English (broken English) is the commonly used language. Those that were not educated were able to speak the pigeon English. Then, there is the correct English which are spoken by those who were educated. As a high school graduate, I belong to the correct English group. I earned my high school diploma when I graduated from high school in Nigeria. Education, trade and economics all contribute to the development of a language, being globally recognised. Due to globalization, English is the only global language used internationally for economic, political and business reasons and no other languages can compete against it due to having military, economic and political power. • 19. English As A Global Language English as a Global Language English is a lingua franca (ELF) where the use of English language is a "common language between speakers whose native languages are different" (Merriam–Webster Dictionary 2015). However, this does not mean that ELF interactions are speaking what is considered proper English, but whether or not they effectively communicate. This does not exclude native speakers, but rather it places emphasis on the interactions between persons of different mother tongues and cultural backgrounds. While other scholars argue that ELF neutrality is cultural free or not (House 2003), HГјlmbauer (2007) views it as multicultural because "it seems likely that the ELF users develop their own markers of identity (be they of a common 'European' or 'international' nature or more individual ones which are created online, depending on the community of practice they are emerging in)." More often than not, ELF interactions stay between non–native speakers where native speakers make up the minority (Paradowski 2008). When discussing ELF interactions, there is this notion that that speakers of ELF feel as though they do not have to adhere to native speaker norms, but only use it accommodate to their communicative needs (Firth 1996). Linguistic expert Braj Kachru (1985) integrates ELF into a model of circles: the Inner Circle, Outer Circle, and the Expanding Circle.
