As a certified life coach I’m well aware of the importance of asking my clients the important
questions on identifying where they are in their life. Most of these questions require them to truly focus
on how they feel deep down inside and in many cases answering the questions can be difficult for some.
Most of the questions I tend to ask are based on the concepts of spirituality and wellness. I choose those
questions because it helps me as a coach identify where they are mentally, emotionally and physically so I
can then develop a path of getting them to where they want to go. I believe that in order to have wellness
you need a broad concept of spirituality and in many cases it is just a belief that there is something greater
within and around you. It’s a belief of some greater force guiding you, or assisting you on this journey we
call life.
For some people it is about finding out their purpose in life, a sense of how they belong and what
they can offer to humanity as a whole. I, however believe that spirituality is all of those things as well as
how we develop as humans. It’s about recognizing how we all fit into this giant puzzle and how we can
further our growth into the next level of awareness and so forth. The term spirituality wasn’t all that
popular until a few years ago, now it is very common to hear people discussing their beliefs out in the
open. Everyone is more aware of the areas in their life that they tend to struggle with and they search for
something outside of themselves to help them deal or cope with those struggles. In the book Health of the
Human Spirit it talks about spiritual hunger and spiritual bankruptcy and I believe this is where true
recognition and self-discovery takes place. The hunger occurs when we are searching and longing for
something deeper and meaningful in our lives. The bankruptcy is “a concept that suggest a sense of moral
decay, perhaps due to an emptiness that cannot be filled with material possession,” (Seward, 2013. Page
6).
We all start out in life in spiritual bankruptcy because we are allsearching for meaning and
purpose. When we discover this we begin moving into a state of awakening and we move into spiritual
hunger, which gives us the drive to keep searching for that deeper meaning and purpose. I find most of
my clients when they fall into spiritual dormancy, which is defined as,“an individual who for one reason

or another chooses not to recognize the importance of the spiritual dimension of health and well-being at
both the individual and societal levels”, (Seaward,2013. Page 6). It is at this point where those people
often times give up and they seek guidance and assistance from others to help them wake up. In order to
help those individuals, wake up I need them to be aware of where they are mentally, emotionally,
physically and spiritually. I have developed twelve questions to help me identify their current state of
well-being, which in turn will help me identify the appropriate steps to help them get past their barriers
and move towards spiritual hunger.
Creating Wellness Questions
1. What do you value most in life?
2. What are your top three values in life and why?
3. What motivates or inspires you in life?
4. Are you happy with your life right now? If not what would you change and why?
5. What does spirituality mean to you?
6. Are there any areas in your life that need improvements? If so, please list them.
7. Why do the areas above need improving? Why are they important to you?
8. What are your biggest challenges in life?
9. What are the things holding you back from facing those challenges?
10. Do you believe you have the resources and capabilities within yourself to face those challenges?
11. What is the most amazing thing that has happened to you this year?
12. What accomplishments are you the proudest of and why?
I chose these twelve specific questions to aid me in determining the following for the client, their
values and its importance to them in their life. Are they currently happy with their life, and if not do they
recognize what needs to change? The motivates and inspires question is about determining if they know
what they need to help them make the necessary changes. Spiritually, I want to know what they

personally think it means to them because everyone has a different meaning and it is about using words
they are familiar with that makes them comfortable. Life improvement questions again focuses on
identifying what needs to change, then can they tell me what is preventing them from making those
changes. What role are they currently in, so I can better determine how to shift them out of their current
state into a movement state. The last few questions help me determine their gratefulness and happiness
level. Can they identify areas in their life that make them happy and or proud?
I interviewed two individuals both who are in different paths in their lives and I felt it was important
to get their answers to help me determine if the questions I asked can be used universally with people on
different paths in their life. They are currently both clients of mine who are each working on overcoming
a few challenges in their life but each one of them has made tremendous progress and growth. For the
purposes of this paper they will be called Interviewee 1 and Interviewee 2. Prior to getting their responses
I asked for their permission to use their answers in this paper and they both agreed.
Interviewee 1
Interviewee 1 is a 39-year old woman who is generally very happy with her life. She is an open-
minded individual who values her freedom to be who she is with no judgements and lives her life with
honesty, compassion and a willingness to adapt to any changes in her life. When she filled out the
questionnaire she realized that the questions were more in-depth than she expected and it was clear that
she needed to really ask herself some deep questions. In reviewing her responses,I discovered that while
she is quite happy with where she is in life, she doesn’t feel challenged. She feels like her life has been
repeating the same circle over and over and that is because she has fallen into spiritual dormancy.
Interviewee 1 lacks the confidence to move into something greater and it is because she believes she isn’t
as good enough to compete for what she wants. In answering the questionnaire, she discovered that she
isn’t growing or expanding so as much as she values freedom to be who she wants to be, she isn’t doing
what is necessary to challenge herself to be more.

Interviewee 2
Interviewee 2 is a 29-year old man who is a completely different person today than he was a year
ago. He is a hard working individual who loves to help people with his gift and he lives his life by helping
others recognize their worth. It is important for me to tell you that Interviewee 2 hasn’t always been this
way. He was actually a very shy, close-minded individual who didn’t want to open up about his life, life’s
challenges or his feelings. He initially came to me to help him with his business but now it is about his
growth and expansion into his well-being as a whole. Interviewee 2 is actually in a very good place in his
life. He really wouldn’t change anything because he is grateful for what he has learned throughout his
life. His willingness to be open, authentic and share his story with those he helps is actually quite
refreshing and enlightening to watch. The one area he tends to struggle with is anger management as it
often times takes on a life of its own so I’m helping him recognize triggers and patterns to aid with
managing his anger. Interviewee 2 values his health and he is aware that anger if not managed
appropriately can be unhealthy for you, so we are working on a few techniques to help him with his
temper.
Overall, after reading both of the interviewees responses to my questions I believe my questions
were well rounded and covered all areas. I can however say that not every client would get the same
questionnaire. I always like to talk to my clients over the phone prior to setting them up for their first
session or providing them with a questionnaire. I like to hear their voice and listen to their words because
it provides me with a sense of where they are emotionally and spiritually. I will be honest and say that I
use my empathic abilities for this because I can often hear the words in between the lines. Depending on
what the client wants to work on will vary the types of questions I send them, so yes my questions will
change from time to time. I feel it is important to deliver a questionnaire to your client based around the
area they want to focus on.
