1. “Life is not always easy, but it can be ecstatic. How to manage the difficulties and
taste the ecstasy is a central challenge of life and a goal of any spiritual practice.”
(Walsh, 1999). Learning to handle tough situations and how to ensure your
psychological health is not affected by stress is very important throughout life. Some
people may not realize the importance, or the different options that are available to
help with these things. Formulating a questionnaire can be used as a great tool to
find out where your client is when it comes to spirituality or complementary
medicine. Below is an example of a questionnaire that could be used for a client.
Questionnaire
1.) What do you think the importance of psychological health is?
2.) What is your definition of Complementary Medicine?
3.) What benefits do you believe Complementary Medicine can have on a
person?
4.) How would you define a meditation session?
5.) In your opinion, how can meditation be beneficial to a person?
6.) Define the word optimism.
7.) Describe a scenario in your life when it was important to remain optimistic.
8.) How would you define spirituality?
9.) What are some examples of how spirituality could be beneficial in a person’s
life?
10.) Explain the importance of spirituality in your life.
Descriptions of the pertinence of the questionnaire
2. 1.) This question could be used to determine where at the client is when it
comes to psychological health. This question will also help to see if the client
needs better understanding to psychological health. It can help to better
understand if psychological health is something that is important to this
person or not. Some people may no care about their psychological health, so
this question could be use as a building block to help them realize how
important it really is.
2.) This question is important because some people may have no idea what
complementary medicine really consists of. By asking this question, it will
help to better understand if the client knows what exactly complementary
medicine is and if not, then it will allow you to explain what it consists of.
3.) This question can be important because even though people may understand
what complementary medicine is, they still may be a little skeptical about it.
Some people think it is a waste of time and doesn’t work, and some people
think it is wonderful and practice some form of complementary medicine a
couple times a week. By asking this question, it can help to learn what kind of
beliefs the client has to complementary medicine and if he or she may be
willing to try it out for themselves.
4.) This question is important because some people do not know the proper way
to perform meditation. In order to get the full benefits of meditation, a
person needs to be aware of the proper techniques and the proper tools such
as a quiet room and something to concentrate on. By asking this question it
3. will help to get a feel for what the client knows about meditation and if he or
she knows how to properly perform a meditation session.
5.) This question is important because some people may not be familiar with
meditation and its benefits. Again, there may also be skeptics that do not
believe meditation can have any benefits, but by asking this question it will
allow you to see how familiar the client is with meditation and its benefits.
6.) Learning how a person defines the word optimism can be a great way to
figure out the importance of optimism to that person. By asking this question
you will be able to see the importance of optimism in the clients life by his or
her description.
7.) By asking for a scenario regarding optimism from the clients personal life
will help to ensure if the client is optimistic or not. If the client is unsure of a
situation, chances are they may not be very optimistic or maybe the person
gives a couple of scenarios where he or she remained optimistic; this shows
that the client is very optimistic.
8.) Asking a client how he or she would define spirituality can help you to
understand if the client really knows what it means and if they need more of
an explanation to better understand what spirituality really is.
9.) This question is important because some people may not be familiar with the
benefits of spirituality and how it can actually help people mentally. Buy
asking this question it will tell you if the client understands what spirituality
is. If the client cannot provide any examples, it will tell you that he or she
probably doesn’t know much about being spiritual or the benefits. This will
4. allow you to be able to educate the client on the benefits if he or she is willing
to learn more about them.
10.) This question is important because it will allow you to see how spiritual
your client is. It may also tell you if the client may want to become more
spiritual, but does not know where he or she should start the process.
Interviewee Results
The person I chose to interview was my boyfriend, Ryan. His response to the
above questions are listed below:
1.) Ryan stated that psychological is important because if you are not
psychologically healthy, not only can it affect your own health, but it may
affect others by the way you treat them.
2.) When asked to define complementary medicine, Ryan responded that it is an
alternative type of medicine that can be used to complement another form of
medicine.
3.) Ryan stated that one of the benefits of complementary medicine is that it
could possibly eliminate the use of medications. A person could turn to
different exercises or therapy for pain instead of taking medications such as
Advil, which could become harmful to the liver if used too much.
4.) When asked to define a meditation session, Ryan described it as sitting in a
quiet room with your eyes closed.
5.) Ryan describes the benefits of meditation being stress relieving, calming and
it allows a person to clear their mind.
5. 6.) The definition of optimism that Ryan gave is that it means to always look at
the brighter side of the situation instead of the negative.
7.) A scenario that Ryan used when he was optimistic was when he had a
deadline at work to be done by the end of the week, while everyone else was
saying the job wouldn’t get done it time, he advised everyone to remain
positive and that it will get done in time.
8.) When asked to define spirituality, Ryan kind of hesitated a little, and then
defined it as believing in a higher power.
9.) Ryan stated the benefits of being spiritual could be that believing in a higher
power may give people hope in certain situations.
10.) When asked to explain the importance of spirituality in his life, Ryan stated
that it is somewhat important to him. He believes there is a higher power,
and in tough times he likes to think that the higher power will take matters in
to his own hands to provide the best outcome.
Additions/Subtractions to inventory
I think I could add some additional questions regarding different types of
complementary medicine. By adding a couple of these questions it would allow to
try and get a feel for how much a client may know about a couple of the different
kinds of complementary medicine such as aromatherapy or acupuncture. I’m am
overall happy with the questions that I formulated for my questionnaire.
