1. Task 9
Title of magazine you wish to produce
I have chosen ‘love pop’ as the title of my magazine as it is simple and readers will
relate to the title. I was torn between a few names but with the help of the people in
my focus group, came to a conclusion of the title of my magazine. It is also an easy
going title which would help attract a younger audience because it relates to the text
inside the magazine being a simple read. Love pop gives the impression that many
like pop and it is a fun harmless genre. I think including the word pop singles the
other genres out and has the emphasis all on pop. I will want to spread the title
clearly over the top of the front of the magazine for it to be easy to read and access.
Explanation of choice of genre
I have chosen pop genre as it is a music genre that I am personally interested in and I
know the most about, therefore I will have strong content on my pop music
magazine. The word ‘pop’ comes from ‘popular’ as it is a widely liked genre
appealing to a large group of people. I occasionally purchase music magazine of the
pop genre so I can take inspiration from those and include them in my magazines for
example codes and conventions used. Making a new, fresh magazine can liven up
the genre of pop and modernise it even more. I personally enjoy the pop genre and
the artists that are incorporated and I feel that I can therefore include my inspiration
in my pop music magazine.
Target audience
My target audience is 12-19 mainly female but also males. I feel that although pop is
mainly stereotyped to be for girls, males also enjoy the genre. Due to me not using
the obvious colour of pink, I feel that my music magazine will reach out to both
genders as it is not just reaching out to females. I feel that it can be different to
make certain aspects in the magazine to be attractive to both genders but if there
are aspects for both genders to enjoy, the magazine will reach out to them. I have
picked the age range as this because I think 19 would be the maximum age of
someone wanting to buy the magazine. At 12 years old, people may be starting to
get pocket money and could therefore afford to buy the music magazine.
Initial ideas about front page
As I have touched on the fact that I want a bold, eye catching front cover, I want to
avoid using the common colours lie pink which could only attract to a girl. I feel like I
will use two or three complimenting colours because one colour may be too boring
and not eye catching and more than three colours may be too much and busy
looking. For my main image I will be using a girl around 16 years old who is blowing
bubbles with gum. (prop) I think this is effective as it links into the ‘pop’ sound and
the pop genre. The masthead will be strong and bold for the reader to catch their
eye on. Around my main image, I will have several cover lines that give snippets of
2. the content inside the magazine. Without the audience even reading the magazine
they can see what kind of things will be inside.
Initial ideas about contents page
Just like my front cover, I will want the title of my magazine to be at the top of the
contents page. This follows codes and conventions showing consistency in the
magazine. From the focus group, I have come to the conclusion that I will need to
use mainly text and compliment it with images. This gives more detail that the cover
lines from the front page but not as much as on the full article itself. I will keep the
same kind of theme of bubble gum throughout the front cover and the contents
page as people would speak about it and the magazine would become more popular.
I want the contents page to be just as attractive and eye catching as the front cover
however I want them to be different to show what is what.
Initial ideas about double page spread
For my double page spread, I am going to use a large picture in the centre, being an
artist. I will then use two small pictures to complete the main image and give more
visual information. I want the overall impression of the article to be positive and for
the audience to want to read it and find out more about the artist. I will use the
same or similar colour scheme I will use on my front cover and contents page to
show consistency and branding, one that stands out from the background and allows
the font to be easy to read.
