This document analyzes the contents pages of several indie rock magazines, including Trace, Spin, Q, NME, Mojo, and Kerrang magazines. It summarizes the layout, design elements, and organization of each magazine's contents page. Key points discussed include the use of color, images, text size and placement, sections/categories, and advertisements on the various contents pages. The document provides details on the visual style and readability of each magazine's table of contents.
2. TRACE MAGAZINE
This is the only one ‘Indie Rock Music Magazine’ that I have
looked at, analysed and researched that does not have a
contents page in – in any issue.
This magazine is merely filled with information, articles and
images like any other magazine but does not tell you what is
featured in it in a seperate page.
3. SPIN MAGAZINE
This contents page is very bold, mainly because
of the use of colours: Red, black, white, grey.
This contents page is very organised and gives
the page a kind of sophisticated, smart look. The photograph
takes up most of the page as it is a full body shot, however
this image would make a reader be more interested if they
were fans of Zoey Deschanel or Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Fans
may be interested if they liked the film that the two actors
filmed together.
This contents page is very simple to read, and find the
information you want – to see what is featured in the
magazine and on what page.
4. Q MAGAZINE
This contents page matches the front cover of
the issue, the colours are the same, however the
layout looks much better on this page, this is
because it is easier to read and more structured.
This magazines contents page looks very plain, the colours
match the magazines constantly used colours: The Red box
that the white or black ‘Q’ sits in as the logo for the magazine.
The subtitles for this page (which are the category names) are
written in white in a red/orange shaded text box.
The image does take up a lot of the page, but this may
interest fans of John Bon Jovi.
If it wasn’t a fan reading this and they didn’t know who the
man was they might read the article to find out.
5. NME MAGAZINE
This contents page is very similar to the cover,
it is very busy and uses the same colours as on
the cover.
NME contents pages are very different to most
Others, this is because NME put a quite sizable image on the
page and then put an article underneath it with a big title.
Also different to many other magazines NME have a
column on the left hand side of the page – from top to bottom
– of the bands mentioned in that weeks issue of the magazine.
Also NME do advertisements at the bottom of their pages,
they are quite big advertisements too, this means that people
will definitely notice it even if they are not interested.
6. MOJO MAGAZINE
This magazine contents page looks so different
To the other types of magazines that I have been
looking at and analysing. This contents page is
very neat and well organised, there is a full body
shot that is looking down on the model – but it still does have
the whole body and outfit in the shot.
This contents page is simple yet effective, it is easy to read
and easy to follow.
The title and page numbers are in orange the other text is
written in smaller black writing.
At the bottom of the page there is a quote written in black,
underneath that there is orange text, this is to break up the
orange and the black text – to stop it looking boring and dull.
7. KERRANG MAGAZINE
This magazine contents page is very similar to
most others, however this page is much busier
than all of the other magazines that I have been
looking at, researching and analysing.
There are a lot more images used in this contents page than
any of the other that I have been looking at.
The main colours used are red, black, white, grey and
yellow. Red, back and white were all used on the cover, yellow
is used on this contents page to break up the page and also to
brighten it up a little bit.
There is text but for the contents pages for Kerrang the
majority of the page is filled up with images and photos of
bands – and things that fit the articles.
