4. Usami performs at the memorial
celebration in Tohoku Region
“Tohoku Caravan”: special classes at “Namie” school
The demonstrations of the athletes that took
place during “Tohoku” festival in six prefectures
of the region have contributed to the raising of
awareness of karate-do among the population.
The event was held to support the rehabilitation
of infrastructure of six prefectures of Tohoku
Region after the earthquake. This time, Rika Usami,
the Goodwill Ambassador, performed with her kata
on the main stage in Akita Prefecture on May 30.
The event, which lasted two days, was huge success
with the audience and was visited by more than
260 thousand people. But the athletes were able
to demonstrate clearly that karate-do is a discipline
worthy to become an Olympic sport. The children
from the local dojo also joined the acknowledged
masters of karate on the stage.
Four days before the holiday, Usami traveled
the prefectures of Tohoku Region to meet
the journalists. She made great efforts to popularize
karate-do and increase the level of its recognition.
On May 27, Rika visited “Namie” school (the city
of Namie) as the Goodwill Ambassador, where all
the residents of the city have been evacuated after
the earthquake and the explosion at the nuclear
power plant. Classes for the study of martial arts –
Budo are held here in a situation, where the gym has
not even a mat.
A part of “Tohoku Caravan” this year was trainings
and performances involving Goodwill Ambassadors
Rika Usami and Yuri Iwata. Their arrival was widely
covered by the local mass media.
Rika Usami, wherever she performed with kata,
always attracts the attention of viewers by the clarity,
strength and beauty of her demonstrations. We think
that after her performances the audience of karate
fans extended.

5. The first qualifying
round left behind!
Japan karate-do slogan is adopted
The first stage is over!
June 22, 2015, the outcome of the consideration
of the list of optional sports competing for inclusion
in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 was
published. The following sports were selected to
the next round out of 26 sports: karate-do, baseball/
softball, bowling, roller sport, sport climbing, squash,
surfing and Wu-shu.
In the wake of this good news JKF and WKF
leaders held a joint press conference and announced
their intention to continue to work in the same spirit
and make every effort for the successful completion
of the second qualifying round.
Takashi Sasagawa, the President of JKF, and
Antonio Espinosa, the President of WKF, who joined
via conference call from Spain, spoke at the press
conference. There is still much to do – to solve a
number of organizational issues related to the filing
of applications, carrying out of the surveys and
proposals on additional disciplines to IOC.
“Raising Japan” is a moto of Japan
karate-do
June 28, 2015, WKF held presentation in the
district of Roppongi (Tokyo) witnessed by the visitors
of shopping centers and simple passers-by.
The slogan for karate athletes representing Japan
was also adopted: “Raising Japan.” The combination
of characters “raising” was borrowed from the name
of the god of thunder and sword in Japanese
mythology – Takemikadzuchi, and the reading of
the characters was adapted so to be conformable
with the English words “razing” and “raising”. It is
believed that this slogan expresses lightning speed
of techniques of combat in karate, and symbolizes
all Japan as a whole.

9. TAKASHI
The memorandum was signed!
Common position of Japan Karate-do Federation (JKF) and
the International Karate Kyokushinkai Organization (IKO)
Today, the mass media write that the inclusion of karate-do in the Olympic sports
is almost fait accompli. The memorandum signed recently by the Japan Karate-do
Federation (JKF) and the International Karate Kyokushinkai Organization (IKO) played
significant role in creating a positive atmosphere.
This event strengthened the confidence of millions of karate-do fans that their dream
is closer as ever to be realized.
Mr. Sasagawa, the President of Japan Karate-Do Federation, told us what preceded
truly epochal meeting.
T. Sasagawa: It is not necessary to create
so much fuss and hype around this event. What
happened had to happen eventually. Any karate
athlete wants to participate in the Olympic Games.
Today, it is quite feasible desire; the probability of
its performance is greater than ever. However, our
athletes should take certain steps for that, first
of all, in the direction of changes in their training
system. They need to start to carry out their trainings
in accordance with the rules of WKF.
JKF has always been open to all athletes who
are ready to compete according to the rules of
WKF. World of karate is so different, it has so many
organizations, people… And they are divided among
themselves. But it is difficult to call for cooperation
and collaboration without any common goal. Now,
such a goal appeared.
We met Mr. Matsui, the President of IKO, several
times. Neither he nor I had a grudge against each
other, and our conversation was constructive.
9
10. SASAGAWA
Q: How do you suppose, what should be your
cooperation? How do you plan to interact?
T. Sasagawa: The goal of the cooperation
between our organizations is the inclusion of karate-
do in the Olympics, and our joint efforts aimed at it.
For the sake of this goal, we maintain friendly and
equal partnership.
JKF includes the organizations we are working
closely together such as Wado-kai, Goju-kai, Shito-
kai, Rengo-kai, Renbu-kai and Shotokan. As for IKO,
our cooperation will be built a little differently –
according to the principle of non-interference in each
other’s affairs. In the future, each of us is going to
move independently. The main thing now is mutual
support in solving the “Olympic issue.” We cannot
allow that the dream of children about the Olympics to
be broken. It is necessary to create the conditions for
everyone who wishes to take part in the tournaments
held by JKF.
Q: Problems with the adoption of the rules will
always remain…
T. Sasagawa: JKF is open to all karate athletes
regardless of the fact the followers of which flow
they are and what are their differences in the
rules of the fight. This is the basic principle of our
activity. Another thing is that the international rules
are the same for everyone. If karate becomes an
Olympic sport, then the rules of WKF will start
to work.
We have made this moment clear during
the conversation with Mr. Matsui. He readily
agreed with our position and realized, and the most
important thing is he accepted it.
The organizations are free to hold the national
championships or competitions within the country
according to their own rules and laws. However,
when it comes to the World Championships or other
international competitions, everyone should follow
the rules of WKF.
Q: How difficult, in your opinion, will it be for
the karate athletes to undergo retraining, in order
to hold the fights according to the rules of WKF?
T. Sasagawa: Assuming that IOC included karate
in the Olympics, the indispensable condition, which
cannot be neglected in any case, will be holding of
the tournaments in accordance with the international
rules. There is no other way but to teach the rules
of WKF for those who want to perform at the
Olympic Games.
JKF is ready to provide full support in this
matter: for example, we can provide instructors for
the retraining of the athletes. This point was also
raised in a conversation with Mr. Matsui. We have
time to use all the opportunities for cooperation.
Q: Tell us more about your activities. What
specific steps are taken to include karate-do in the
Olympics?
T. Sasagawa: We have repeatedly applied for
the inclusion of karate in the Olympics, but the result
was not in our favor.
When the list of additional disciplines, which may
be included in the program of the Olympic Games
in Tokyo, was announced, we were disappointed, as
karate was not listed. Nevertheless, hope appeared,
when IOC made the decision according to which
the host country may recommend the disciplines for
the inclusion. This was our chance.
If we have previously applied for the inclusion of
only kumite, but this time we decided to apply also
kata, given the scale of the campaign and the opinion
of the people.
A huge number of people around the world are
waiting and hoping that karate will be finally included
into the Olympics. Recently I visited the European
Championships in Azerbaijan, where karate is very
popular sport. Rafael Aghayev, Azerbaijani karate
athlete, won in the male kumite for the fighters in the
weight category up to 75 kg, and the President of this
country congratulated him personally.
Karate as a sport originated in Okinawa, spread
throughout Japan and conquered the world. Moreover,
karate is more popular worldwide than in Japan.
Our kind of martial arts does not need things like
any additional equipment or special areas, so
the representatives of even small country can claim
for the “gold” at the tournaments. The competition
is very high. Athletes from Japan will need to work
even harder to keep up with the competition.
In addition, we must not forget that today
the Karate-do World Championship includes
competitions for the disabled persons. If karate enters
the Olympic Programme, it implies its automatic
inclusion in the Paralympic Games. Be that as it may,
karate-do as a sport will benefit and become more
interesting of this situation.

questions

Seminar for referees
What if the opinions
of the referees about
successive waza
divided?
In this situation, it is necessary to act according
to the principle “take the smallest indicator.”
When the referees’ opinions were divided, and
two and more referees show different points: yuko,
waza ari, ippon, etc., and the majority of the referees
cannot come to the consensus, the lowest rate
shall be taken.
Considering an example where two referees
gave ippon, while two other gave yuko, it shall be
noted that in this situation the Chief Referee must
be guided by the abovementioned principle of
the lowest rate. In this case, the Chief Referee must
announce the following decision: “Red” is chudan
tsuki, yuko.”
Why is the smallest indicator taken?
Due to the fact that the number of referees
who raised red flags is more than two, the Chief
Referee will estimate the technique of the “red.”
However, the referees who awarded only yuko,
could not recognize jodan geri. In such situations,
the referees’ opinions are divided; the recognition
of the smallest indicator has less influence on the
game, because this moment is fixed in the rules.
The same method is applied also in respect
of violations (Rules of sports karate of the World
Karate-do Federation, explanation V, p. 18).
If a majority of the referees have taken the same
decisions, the principle of the least indicator is not
applicable. As well as in case, if two Side Referees
gave ippon and one gave yuko. In both cases,
the Chief Referee who guided by the opinion of
the majority of referees must declare: “Red” – jodan
geri, ippon” (Rules of sports karate of the World
Karate-do Federation, explanation V1, p. 19).
The “red” fulfilled series of waza (he transferred from chudan tsuki
to jodan geri) and the referee gave “Yame” command. Two referees
gave ippon, while other two awarded yuko.
What should be the response of the Chief Referee: awarding of ippon
or yuko?
12
13. * If the majority of the Side Referees
gave the same assessments, the principle
of the least indicator is not applicable.
(For instance) Two referees gave ippon
to the “red”, and one referee gave yuko.
According to the opinion of the majority,
ippon is scored to the “red”.
April 1, 2013 All-Japan Karate Federation has introduced new rules
of the competition. Despite the fact that many members of the referee
committees study and successfully master the new rules in practice,
misunderstandings arise quite often because the new regulations are
markedly different from the old in part of the refereeing.
The assessment is given to the highest
technique in successive waza.
Chapter 6 of the “Rules of the sports karate”,
which determines the order of assignment of
scores in the sports kumite, contains the following
explanation (p.8, explanations XV).
In the case of assessment of consecutive waza
of the athlete before “Yame” command, the highest
technique must be assessed regardless of the order
of one or another technique. For example: if geri
was performed after tsuki, despite the fact that
tsuki was the first technique, higher technique –
geri should be evaluated.
Previous rules restricted the number of
techniques that could be applied during a fight. As
soon as one of the rivals performed a blow, the main
referee must stop the fight immediately. Therefore,
the athletes could not perform several techniques.
For example, when tsuki was performed, “Yame”
command sounded immediately and it was not
possible to perform geri. Accordingly, only tsuki
was subject to assessment, thus an athlete was
deprived of the possibility to get ippon for the next
blow, which could be geri.
The new rules are focused to present the fight
as spectacular show which is interesting for
the fans and the journalists, therefore they
contain the standard according to which not
the first techniques is evaluated, but the highest
of the series of attacks carried out. In this regard,
the role of the Side Referees significantly increased:
they need to see clearly this high technique in a
series of blows, and take decision before “Yame”
command and define appropriate assessment.
Chief Referee has no less important role:
according to the rules, he must ensure that
the athlete has fully complied one or another
technique, and only then give “Yame” command.
Then he should be familiar with the assessments
of the Side Referees and announce his decision.
(To be continued)
In this case we take the lowest indicator, so the referee takes
the following decision: “red” – yuko. However, if the majority of
the Side Referees have put the same assessment, the principle of
the least indicator is not applicable.
The lowest
indicator is taken

14. Summer 2015 has left a bright
trace in the history of the world
sports. Baku hosted the first
European Games… What is this event
remarkable for? Baku Games gave a
powerful impetus to the development
of European sport, which lagged
behind the other continents for years
in this regard, curiously enough…
Pan American, Asian and many other
games – they all are successfully held
for a long time. And finally Europe
joined them.
Sports results of the Games
are not that important, the events
that accompanied them are more
interesting, for example, such as
attending of karate competitions by
Mr. Bach, the President of the IOC.
Incidentally, this is the first time
when the head of major international
sports organization was among
the observers of the karate fights.
Given the situation, which is currently
developed around karate entry into
the Olympic family, the news takes
on different meaning. This is a kind
of a signal to all the stakeholders that
the chances of karate to become an
official Olympic sport are as high as
ever. Especially, in light of numerous
activities to support the martial art
loved by millions of fans around
the world held under the motto
“Karate-do to the Olympics!”
Each of us tries to approximate
this dream as far as possible.
Undoubtedly, the ideological
mastermind of the movement is JKF
and personally Mr. Sasagawa. Our
Japanese colleagues are making
every effort karate-do to become
full participant of the forthcoming
Olympic Games in Tokyo. Past
European Games added confidence
to us that this ambitious project will
be a success!

16. At the awards ceremony at the Asian Games
Shigeo Kurihara was born in a
family, which was indifferent to the
sport. The brothers were engaged
in karate, the youngest brother
practiced Judo and his sister was
fond of tennis. And the hero of
our article also preferred tennis
and swimming... A sense of self-
preservation has led him to karate.
“I had to start practicing karate, in
order I was not offended,” Kurihara
says half serious, half playful.
“Everything was different
earlier. We started practicing late
unlike the children of today starting
at 5-6 years. Despite the fact that I
was already 17 years old, I was the
youngest in the group,” Kurihara
continues the conversation. It
should be added that the dan ranks
represented something different at
the time: there were 5 dan ranks
instead of 10 as of now, the fifth
dan was the highest. And Shigeo
Kurihara aged of 20 years, having
the first dan, participated in the first
competitions in his athletic career -
East Japan Championships, and in
two categories: he took the third
place in kata and reached the 5th
meeting in kumite.
Many years passed since
then, Shigeo Kurihara had a lot of
championships both personal and
those that attended by his disciples.
TodayKuriharaistheVicePresident
of the Asian Karate-Do Federation
(AKF) and the Vice President of
Japan Karate-Do Federation (JKF).
Our meeting took place during
the stay of Mr. Kurihara in Almaty.
16
Q: You are visiting our country not for the first time. What
is the purpose of your visit this time?
S. Kurihara: We have been planning this trip. Sarsenbay
(Sarsenbay Abdulayev, the Vice President of AKF, the President
of the Central Asian Karate-Do Federation) and Zhastalap
(Zhastalap Sanauov, a member of AKF, the Vice President
of the Kazakhstan Karate-Do Federation) has repeatedly
announced their wish to hold a seminar of Masao Kagawa
in Almaty for the coaches of Central Asia. It is a pity that due to
the busy schedule we had to limit our stay to two days, I would
like to have more time. Especially Kagawa visited Kazakhstan
for the first time unlike me. I think we will be able to fill this gap
in the future.
Q: You visit Kazakhstan not only as a representative of JKF
and AJKS, but also as the Vice President of AKF. How would
you characterize the Asian Karate as a whole, what place does
it take in the world?
S. Kurihara: If you talk about the level of presence of AKF
in scale of the global space, the European Federation has
the role of the first violin, definitely. 189 member countries of
WKF consist of 52 European countries and 44 Asian countries.
However, Europe is a leader not only due to the proportion of
countries, but also financially. Asian countries cannot afford
many things. Despite this number – 44, as a rule, the Asian
Championships are attended by about 32, and the reason is a
lack of funding. Japan has a function of technical equipment of
the athletes in the process. Therefore, the Technical Director of
WKF is the representative of our country for a long time.
And the level of sportsmanship is very high in Europe.
World Championship in Germany… The way of Japanese
athletes to the medals was long. In Bremen, Japan took the 1st
place; Egypt took the 2nd
place followed by the French and
17. 17
the Turks. It is difficult to compete
for the Japanese in kata in Europe.
Q: What do you like more kata
or kumite?
S. Kurihara: I like both
directions. They are interrelated.
If an athlete is not very good
command of kata, he cannot show
cool kumite. Kata summarizes all
the movements.
Q: How do children perceive
the kata?
S. Kurihara: Kata is primarily a
tradition. Children understand that.
They do it not like adults, of course.
But multiple repetitions lead to
understanding over time.
Q: You talk about the tradition,
but today karate is more sportive
rather than the traditional…
S. Kurihara: Due to the fact
that karate became a sport, 189
countries are engaged with it in
the world.
Q: But there are opponents of
sports karate…
S. Kurihara: Yes, but they
are not numerous. The spirit of
traditional karate still stays, it is
felt in everything. First of all, this
is reflected in education, a culture of
behavior starts from childhood. For
example, elements of the respect
that opponents show, when they
meet each other on the mat and
after the fight. All of this is laid
through the traditions.
Q: When did you start to be
involved in affairs of JKF?
S. Kurihara: I was one of
the leaders of the Tokyo Karate-Do
Federation. For a long time I took
this post and taught in the dojo
where I was trained in parallel.
Japan Karate-Do Federation
unites 57 organizations, 44
of them are represented by
the prefectures of the country.
Japanese Cabinet has gi
ven the organization all
the necessary authorities
And all this is aimed at the
main goal, which was voiced by
Mr. Kurihara – raising of healthy
nation: “It can be said, that
this is the slogan of the Japan
Karate-Do Federation “Healthy
Nation is Healthy Children!” To
this end, we hold championships
among junior, middle and high
school students, university
students and working athletes.
There are more than 10 types
of competitions. In addition
to national championships,
JKF controls also regional
tournaments held in the
prefectures.”
JKF is a unique well-organized
system. Many people are
interested in the mechanism of
its functioning.
In my opinion, “school” issue
is the most interesting moment
in the functioning of the Japan
Karate-Do Federation.
S. Kurihara: The children’s
program exists in Japan. Earlier,
the question of choice of the sport
included in the school curriculum
as a compulsory subject was solved
by the authorities of the institution.
And it did not hurry to introduce
karate-do, as it was considered
as unsafe for children. Although,
judging by the polls, the students
gave their preference to our kind
of the martial arts. But important
changes took place about three
years ago. Judo, kendo, sumo and
karate – these four sports entered
the school curriculum as compulsory
disciplines. The student chooses
one that he likes, and marks are
set for these classes. That means
the choice is up to the children now.
Q: Do you have any data how
many schools have karate-do
sections?
S. Kurihara: The situation
t hroug hou t Jap an is like
the following: the total number of
secondary schools is 10,500, judo
involved about 60 % of children,
kendo – 30 %, sumo – 3 % and
the rest (around 210 schools)
practice karate.
Schools are divided into male
and female. Almost all female
students practice karate. This state
of affairs is traditional, it happened
for centuries.
Q: Why?
S. Kurihara: As they say, it’s a
good sport, which is easier to deal
with. In addition, you do not need
special equipment and are quickly
involved in it.
Q: How is the problem with
the teachers solved in these
18. President of JKF Mr. Sasagawa
18
schools? Who is responsible for
their training?
S. Kurihara: The teachers of
physical education play the role of
the instructors, provided that they
have this specialty, i.e. they are
karate athletes. If not – the local
federation sends instructors. They
are the freelancers and must be
registered with the Association
of Physical Culture. Instructors
pass the exams, the Association
is responsible for the theoretical
part of the test, and JKF oversees
the practical part. We qualify them
jointly.
Today, about five thousand
of karate instructors work in the
country.
Q: Are the coaching with adults
and children two different things?
S. Kurihara: Sure! Methods
of interaction with children and
adults are completely different.
Everything is systemized in Japan.
There is a gradation of the coaches
built by the Association of Physical
Culture and JKF. The contender
for the title of the coach should
correspond to specific category
and qualification. For example, I
have the qualification of the highest
category of the Association of
Physical Education and the highest
qualification for refereeing.
By the way, refereeing is ano
ther interesting point in the
work of JKF. The figure showing
the number of referees in the
country is more amazing rather
than the system of qualifications
awarding the referees…
S. Kurihara: Three-stage
refereeing is in Japan. The lowest
stage is regional, then the referees
in the prefectures, the third
stage is JKF, and the examination
is held at every stage. If you start
the calculation, the total number of
referees will amount five thousand
people, about thousand are top
referees among them. They judge
the championships at the national
level. There are referees among
them who are entrusted with
the refereeing at the Asian Games
and WKF championships.
This is the refereeing distribution
system.
The awarding of the dan
ranks is another function of
JKF. Despite the fact that every
federation has its own fund,
provides dan ranks and gives
qualification, namely JKF has
developed standards that are
officially recognized in Japan.
These titles are not so easy
to earn. For example, Shigeo
Kurihara possesses the 9th dan
in Shotokan and JKF assigned
the 7th dan. “Once a year, you
can try your luck, but there
is no guarantee of success. Tests
are very difficult,” says the Vice
President of the Federation.
The story of JKF will be
incomplete without a mention of
its head, which requires special
attention. Takashi Sasagawa
is the ex-diplomat, the successor
of his father, the founder of
the Japan Karate Support Fund.
It is enough to pay attention
to the “News” column in our
magazine to understand how
this person is actively involved
in the daily life of national and
international karate. And as for
the situation with JKA, when,
it was decided to establish new
structure of Shotokan – All Japan
Karate-do Shotokan (AJKS)
after the irrepressible conflict,
namely Mr. Sasagawa took over
the functions of its leader. It is
clear that this is temporary to
overcome the transitional period
and the formation of the young
organization.
Q: How was AJKS perceived
at the local level?
S. Kurihara: Dif ferently.
Someone joins us, and other
hesitates. It is voluntary, we do
not press.
Truly international commu
nity could assess the role of
Mr. Sasagawa today, at a time
when “Olympic fate” of karate-
do is solved.
S. Kurihara: In the campaign
for inclusion of the karate-do in the
Olympics, Mr. Sasagawa is the driver
of the process. Taking into account
19. Last year Shigeo Kurihara won the state
award – the Order of the Rising Sun of
the 4th
degree. JKF held celebrations
on this occasion.
Shigeo Kurihara together with the national team
19

his abilities as a politician, his links,
character and power he invests to
develop karate, likelihood appeared
that the dream of millions to be part
of Olympic sports will come true.
In September, we will know what
sports will be included – baseball
or karate… These two sports are
offered to include in the Olympics.
Initially, they will be included in a
short list, and then the voting will
be held in Rio de Janeiro. In 2005,
karate was already included in a
list equally to squash, but it did not
receive required two-thirds of votes.
It’s not on…
Tell me, what other sport
is represented by so many athletes
like karate? There is pentathlon,
which is an Olympic sport. Is it
more popular than karate?! But
Europe stands behind it, where it is
a traditional occupation. 8 out of 15
directors of IOC are the European
representatives, who have a single
view and understanding, and
the opinion of the rest is not taken
into account. The IOC has only one
representative of Japan and three
representatives of China, who have
the right to vote…
We made already three tries:
in Singapore, Germany and St.
Petersburg. And we failed all three
times. Last year, the meeting of
directors of IOC held in Monaco
decided to entitle the host country
of the Olympic Games to include
into the Programme the sport by
their choice. Amazing work has
been done after that! There have
been done a volume of work, which
was not implemented for the last
10 years.
Q: Is the entry of karate-do
in the Olympic Games the main
goal of JKF?
S. Kurihara: Now, it is the task
number one for JKF.
I think it is our duty to those
Senpai, who 50 years ago cultivated
karate all over the world.
Another strong argument
in favor of the Olympic status of
karate is that it will give impetus to
the development of karate in the
world, in every country, including
the fact that the state will pay more
attention to karate.
Q: You have gone through three
failed attempts of entering karate
to the Olympics. What are your
expectations now?
S. Kurihara: Great luck for
karate is the fact that the Olympics
will be held in Tokyo, this is our
chance. Although… Now there is a
lot of politics. What did preceded
that London became the capital
of the Olympics in 2012? Out of
five cities selected at the 117th
IOC Session held in July 2005
in Singapore – Madrid, Moscow,
New York, Paris and London – Paris
was a favorite of the race. But Tony
Blair, the Prime Minister of Great
Britain visited Singapore, the only
head of government who personally
presented his country’s application,
and we saw the result of the vote…
Q: Are you ready for the worst
case in your soul?
S. Kurihara: I do not want to
admit even the thought of failure.
There are no other options. But if
it happens, we will continue the work
started, and aim at 2024, 2028…
It is impossible to stop the process.
Personally for me, Tokyo is the last
chance, we will have not another. If
I have not a chance to make this a
reality, it may be the next generation
will succeed…
20. Daring challenge
of porcelain doll
Emiri Iwamoto
In April 2013, Emiri Iwamoto was selected for the first time to the women’s national
team and almost immediately announced of her to the world performing successfully at
the Premier League. Emiri is 25 years old, she came from Hokkaido. She made her career
in karate independently without relation to any strong and proven school. Emiri passed
through thorny way to get the right to fly the flag of Japan.
This single-minded girl started to conquer the world of karate from Hokkaido and now
she challenges fearlessly the strongest athletes of the world.

21. Prior to entering the university,
sports luck avoided Emiri. Now
she performs successfully at the
most prestigious tournaments
in the world. What is a secret of
the success of the girl from far
northern town?
The rapid burst to
the championship
April 2013. At the announcement of
the results of the qualifying rounds for
the national team the names of those
involved in the team are pronounced,
and unfamiliar name sounds among of
them. Emiri, of course, cherishes hopes
that she will win this tournament and
take place in the team. But it was her
first attempt, so she was confused and
startled and did not understand that her
name was called.
Emiri Iwamoto was 24 at that
time. Emiri was late-blown flower for
the national team, whose members
are usually students. If we talk about
the first principle of knowledge of Emiri,
she presents Vado movement. And
she performs perfectly Ryuei-ryu and
Goju-ryu at the competition, it means
she combines skillfully all the best
of these three movements, and her
performances reflect her peculiar
perceptions of the world.
After Emiri’s inclusion in the national
team, she started to perform at the
international tournaments. She won
the championship of East Asia and took
part on her own initiative in the Premier
League tournaments in Germany
and Austria, as well as the first stage
of the WKF Karate Premier League
in Paris in 2014. And Emiri treated
her every performance at these
tournaments as great opportunity to
improve their skills. Taking part in the
Premier League in Germany for the first
time, she defeated Yaiza Martin Abello
from Spain, the European champion of
2012 and Nan from Vietnam, the world
champion of 2008, leaving the most
vivid impressions of the audience and
making the name to the whole world.
Emiri started to practice karate
when she studied in second grade
of Hokkukan Wado-kai School
in Hokkaido. She participated willingly
in all school championships and
tournaments, but lost immediately
almost always. And, she entered
the Hokkaido Industry University not
due to sports recommendation unlike
many others but due to the results of
common entrance examinations.
The turning point in sports life
of Iwamoto was the performance of
the team under the direction of Azusa
Tomigusuku Sensei at the Championship
among the schools of Japan. Then
athletes demonstrated kata Anan. Emiri
never happened to participate in adult
tournaments, so she did not even know
about the existence of this kata. Emiri
was admired by the power of technique
and the spirit of performance, she was
shocked by the ability of athletes to
“weave” miraculously together forms of
kata, and she was eager to master this
skill by all means. Even when Emiri grew
up, she could not forget her childhood
dream and, having already become
2nd
-year student of the university,
she went to Okinawa to take training
from Sakumoto sensei, who is the
teacher of Azusa Tomigusuku sensei.
These workouts became very good
school for Emiri: she was surrounded
by the strongest athletes aspiring to
the world championship, and great
desire to become a world champion
originated in her soul in this atmosphere
of rivalry and fierce competition.
When graduating from the university,
Emiri accepted an invitation of
the President of the company and
the Head of the branch of Wado-
kai in Sapporo Tadaeshi Ozumi and
started to work in “Clean Corporation”
C ompany. This s tep be c ame
the beginning of her sporting career
now as a working athlete. But despite
of the shortage of time and workload,
Emiri continued regularly, once a month,
to go to school to Okinawa. Also, thanks
to the support of the President Ozumi,
Emiri received flexible work schedule
in the company, and she got at her
disposal special hours reserved for
the training. In addition, the company
has taken care of all the expenses for
Emiri’s accommodation and training,
including training on Okinawa, trips to
competitions and so on.
As a rule, when returning home,
to Hokkaido, Emiri repeats exercises
learned on Okinawa many times during
her trainings. Once a week she teaches
at the dojo of the branch of Wado-
kai in Sapporo, other days she trains
independently in the rented room of
the kindergarten. It happens that there
are no suitable premises, and then
Emiri trains in her small apartment
which size equals to 7–8 mats. It is
impossible to perform kata fully in tiny
room, but in the evening, standing
in front of the door and seeing her
reflection, she polishes every detail of
kata. Emiri is full of desire to improve
her capabilities, and to obtain objective
assessment of outside experts,
she takes lessons from her father
and Senseis of the Reinforcement
Committee of the Hokkaido Federation.
When Emiri was a child, she did not
know how to fight and lost at all school
championships and tournaments.
When she was 4-year student of
the university, she won the Japan Wado-
kai Championship and World Wado-
kai Championship and took part in the
Japan Championship for the first time.
After graduation she went to work to
JSC “Clean Corporation” and continues
in parallel her sports activities as
working athlete.
In 2013, she became a part of
the national team for the first time and
immediately achieved very good results:
she won the Championship of East
Asia, won the “bronze” in the Premier
League in Germany, silver medals in the
Premier League in Austria and the WKF
Premier League in Paris already this
year. At competitions she demonstrates
kata Wado-kai, Goju-Ryu and Ryuei-ryu.
Recently, she is fond of tea
imported from Austria. Her motto is “Do
not destroy your talents.”
October 2013, Premier League in Germany.
Emiri’s debut at the World Championships
was very successful: she defeated Yaiza
Martin Abello from Spain, the European
champion of 2012 and Nan from Vietnam,
the world champion of 2008.
She was born on May 30, 1988 in Hokkaido.
She started practicing karate as the 2nd
grade
pupilofHokkukanWado-kaiSchoolin Hokkaido.
She works in JSC “Clean Corporation” and
relates to the branch of Wado-kai in Sapporo.

22. One point Technique
Two most important reference points – to feel central axis and
keep posture – come through kata of Iwamoto as common thread.
In this article we present you the exercises from Emiri’s daily workout.
And the body takes
proper stance
at once!
(One, two and siko-dachi)
And now we offer to master another very useful exercise. It helps to ensure
that the upper and lower body took the stance at the same time. “We carry
out this exercise in the dojo with children counting “One, one, two!” When
counting “Two!”, take siko-dachi. The main aim is that the upper and lower
parts of the body to take the stance simultaneously.

In kihon, when we lift one leg up, it is necessary to stop for some time. We need
to see whether the body is inclined, whether central axis is held straight, whether
the support leg stands firmly. If you still lose your balance, then you need further
training.

23. Emiri felt involved in the international tournament at the
qualifying tournament for the national team. Curiously
enough, but these feelings are still the most vivid in her
sporting life.
Foreknowledge
of victory
Emiri remembers the feelings
to the smallest detail experienced
during the qualifying championship to
the national team of Japan. She felt as
if it was the World Championship.
As Emiri confessed later, they were
feelings of special tension. “I tried to
overcome the intense excitement. I told
myself that I should show something
that worked for a year. And as soon as
I stand in front of the referees, I calmed
down suddenly. I felt strange feelings. I
felt the views of senseis, athletes and
numerous fans… And it seemed to
me that I am not at home in Japan but
somewhere far away at the international
championship. Even though I had
not previously participated in the
international tournament, it seemed to
me that I plunged into its atmosphere.
And these thoughts banished fear, my
soul was filled with joy! My arms and
legs were moving as if on their own, I did
not make any redundant movements,
everything was clear and beautiful…
It was the best feeling that I’ve ever had
to endure,” said Emiri.
Under
the burden of success
“The first reinforcement camp.
The members of the national team are
all the best athletes, and their names
are on everyone’s lips, having brilliant
victories on their account. At first I was
very worried: how I can join the team
having no experience of participation
in international tournaments. I
doubted whether there is any place
for me… In fact, it turned out that
the guys from the national team
completely devoid of stardom and they
are good-natured and friendly. So my
worries were unfounded.
In June 2013 I was selected to
participate in the Championship
of East Asia. This championship
has become my first international
tournament. It was the first one
and very successful. I won, and this
victory filled my sporting life with new
emotions and new colors. “I have been
entrusted to carry the flag of Japan.
Therefore, I just have to win this
championship. I need victory only!”
Emiri urged herself.
“Before, I always performed only
for my own pleasure, to demonstrate
my strength and satisfy my ambitions.
But this time I have been covered
with different feelings. They stayed
in my mind. And now these feelings
wake up in me whenever I go out to
the mat, even if it is internal national
championship.
It did not take long to blend into
the national team. And I respected
the members of this team with all
my heart, as they have great burden
of responsibility on their shoulders.
They have already been recognized as
the best of the best. And awareness
of their special mission overpresses
athletes constantly as they do not
demonstrate themselves, but present
karate of entire Japan…” said Emiri.

there are some difficulties with space for training.

The head office of JSC “Clean Corporation”, where Emiri Iwamoto works, is located
in Sapporo. The company has 14 branches throughout Japan and even office in Vietnam.
The company is engaged in the management and maintenance of the premises. It counts
2,600 employees.
The President and Director, Tadaeshi Ozumi, practices karate for 40 years and is in
charge of the branch of Wado-kai in Sapporo. He met Emir Iwamoto few years ago, when
she assisted in conducting training in the dojo. Ozumi liked her diligence and hard work, and
welcoming Emiri’s desire to combine work and karate in the future, he offered her a place
in his company without any hesitations. Ozumi helps Emiri paying for her accommodation,
travels and training on Okinawa, training and travels to competitions. All employees of
the company are aware of this support.
“It is very good that she manages to embody her dream here in Hokkaido, expanding
her horizons. First it was Japan, and now – the whole world… So I try to provide all possible
support for Emiri. I hope that today’s youth of Hokkaido will take lead from her,” said
Ozumi.

25. Emiri Iwamoto
The feeling of inferiority has strong
roots, but everything can be
overcome, if you believe in yourself.
To overcome
inferiority complex
“I could not get rid of the feeling of
inferiority for a long time…” admitted
Emiri. If to see closer, her trainings
on Okinawa during her student years
and great desire to conquer the world
of karate are the fight with those
complexes mentioned by the hero of
our article. And for the question about
her main purpose, Emiri had only
one answer: “To become the world
champion”, i.e. she was always
confused due to the fact that she did
not study at any strong karate school
and had not winning results.
Nevertheless, we must pay tribute
to the strength of Emiri’s character
as she never charged her failures to
the lack of conditions, environment
and so on. On the contrary, she has
always tried to find a solution under
existing conditions.
Being a student, Emiri was
fully committed to her study from
the morning and till the lunch, and she
practiced karate or went to training
in karate section in the afternoon.
After the workout, she remained in the
gym, where the heating was turned
off, and went on to train as long as
the security started ringing with keys
and close the door. To afford training
on Okinawa, Emiri saved money from
accidental employments or tried to
win the prizes from the University for
some Projects. Sometimes Hiroshi
Katsuhara, the coach of the dojo,
helped her to collect the money for
her travels, giving his stock dividends.
Emiri tried her best, but she did
not receive any expected results. She
have already begun to think about
retirement from the sport, but there
was a case that made her change
her plans. She did not pass the final
at the Student Games of Japan, and
the difference on the points was so
insignificant that she physically felt
how close she was to victory.
“And then I realized that it does not
matter whether there are any strong
schools in Hokkaido, it is not important
that Hokkaido has little strong athletes
and therefore it is easier to go to
the championship of Japan. I realized
that the main thing is me, my attitude
and my desire, because everything
depends on me fundamentally,”
shared Emiri. The awareness of her
past mistakes allowed her to come to
the next level. And she won the Wado-
kai Championships of Japan and
World, first passed qualifying round
of Hokkaido and received the right
to participate in the Karate-do
Championship of Japan at the same
year. After such dramatic changes
Emiri realized that she has not yet
reached her peak and decided to stay
in the sport already as working athlete.
The main thing is to
believe in you
“I understood simple truth:
everything depends on me. A year has
passed since that time as I came to
the national team, but I still peer and
take cue from team-mates, whereas all
the other athletes from Japan believe
that their main rivals are themselves.
I think if I had not entered the national
team, I would have never felt such
things,” says Emiri.
“Do not argue, if you perform at the
tournament in full force, you can safely
count on proper evaluation. But being
an athlete who is entrusted to defend
the honor of Japan abroad, I am
initially aimed at the result. And during
the performance I do not think about
the kata, and try to give everything to
the maxim to show the best result.
And yet I feel great responsibility
for my future performances and
clearly understand that strong spirit
is needed to win. Therefore, there is no
difference, how I feel myself. The main
aim is to win, so you should always be
at your best and confident for 100 %,”
said the champion. This is Emiri’s
mood during the first year in the
national team, where she significantly
strengthened in moral terms.
”Now I know what
real happiness of
the athlete is…”
“There is another very important
point, which I cannot neglect. My
world expanded after participating
in the Premier League… When I
see the hall full of fans who came
to the tournament from different
countries, when I feel great
interest the whole world shows to
karate, when I hear the applause
after the demonstrations and see
the eyes of the people of different
nationalities thanking me for my
beautiful technique, I feel such joy,
such happiness that cannot be
described in words… Just recently I
performed only in Hokkaido, and now
the whole world can see my kata.
And I’m getting stronger and more
confident due to this thought, and I
want to practice karate even more.
A sense of gratitude to others fills
my soul. I am immensely grateful to
the President Ozumi for his care and
support. I thank Sakumoto coach
for his exactingness and personal
involvement, and Katsuharu Sensei
for the fact that the meeting him
became the turning point in my life.
And I would like to thank my beloved
parents for everything they have done
for me, for the fact they do not sleep
at nights waiting for the outcomes
of foreign championships with my
participation…
This is why, I really want to achieve
the best results. And these ambitions
I associate with the international
championships. I was trusted to carry
the flag of Japan during a year, and
this high confidence changed a lot
in me,” said Emiri at the end of our
conversation.
P.S. In January of this year, the
next stage of the Premier League
“Paris Open” was held. Emiri Iwamoto
became the hero of Paris tournament.

26. Body work
changes
kumite
Is high-speed jodan tsuki outdated?
Even in the recent past karate athletes’ movements of the upper part of the body
from side to side, up and down, similar to the defensive technique in boxing (so-
called body work) were deemed as inaction during the fights. And, consequently,
they resulted in the violation of category 2. Nevertheless, these movements were
(The article was published in 2013)

27. used without restrictions at the last karate world championships, as it is seen in the
picture above and below.
It is possible that these techniques of defense will be included in the rules at the
kumite competitions held within Japan in the near future, which will necessarily
entail a significant change in style in karate competitions.
JKFan journalists decided to conduct their own investigation of these techniques
and reflect on the issues of their study.
27

28. Even Rafael Aghayev, the winner of the 19th
World Championships, whose jodan tsuki was
recognized as the fastest in the world, carries it out at the expense of the body work.
To keep up with the times
Under the old rules, the moves
called as “duckings” and weavings
in the box were considered
in karate as omissions and fell
under violations of category 2.
And according to the experts,
such an assessment did not
require any explanations, because
the athlete deliberately put his
face under the blow in response
to the opponent’s attack.
Irregular motions of arms
and legs are considered as
typical protective techniques
in karate. In addition, although
it is prohibited in sport karate,
dangerous blows performed
using the knees (hiza-geri) are
included in its techniques. It is
not surprisingly that the actions
that entailed the risk of such an
attack were treated as prohibited
behavior (omission, mubobi).
Meanwhile, the concept
of “mubobi” gradually chan
ge d ove r t h e y e ar s o f
the world championships. And
the movements of the upper part
of the body back and forth, left
and right, started to belong to
the defensive techniques.
“Ducking” and weaving are
out of the ban
E x p l aining t h e r e c e n t
amendments to the rules,
Namiki Tomonori, the Chairman
of the Referee Committee of
the Japan Karate Association,
said that “the verdict is issued
only after the referees will make
sure whether the situation relates
to mubobi – inaction – or not. If
not, the violation is not exposed.”
This means that “ducking” and
weaving stopped to be regarded
as violations of category 2 in the
world championships. Although,
probably, the term “stopped”
is not the most appropriate.
It is more accurate to say that
the “ducking” and weaving
stopped automatically to result
in the violations of category 2.
If the situation does not meet
mubobi then the violation is not
exposed. A detailed description of
defensive techniques is presented
below, but it should be noted
that in case of skillful evading
of the attacks, mubobi is not
exposed. Therefore, we can say
that the ban of “ducking” and
weaving was abolished.
For example, if you take
international competitions,
the body movements are
performed relatively unhindered
in response to kizami tsuki. Rafael
Aghayev is one of the athletes
being a master of high-speed
jodan tsuki technique. Even
eminent champion has become
more difficult to earn points only
at its expense. Moreover, Aghayev
extensively practices the defense
with the help of upper part of
the body.
World Championship:
a standard of style
Those who watched the 19th
World Karate Championships held
in 2008 in Tokyo live or on DVD
certainly have noticed that not
only Aghayev, but many other
foreign athletes use protective
body movements.
If you recall the history of
Europe and the traditions of
the Olympic Games, the sport
and the audience have been
inseparable in these countries.
Today, it is necessary to focus
on the ease of understanding
of the sports action. Often
the uninitiated viewer is difficult
to determine what actions
are violations. Therefore, it is
important that the competition to
be clear to everyone who wants to
see the tournament.
We have to admit the obvious
fact: Japan joins the international
sports movement. Undoubtedly,
the changes do not always happen
as fast as we would like, new steps
are rather difficult sometimes.
But new rules will come into force
at the championship which will take
place in April. And we can assume
that weaving and “ducking” will no
longer be regarded as a prohibited
action since this tournament.

30. The main stance
The chin is lowered, but not
just by lowering the head:
it is necessary to lower your
head fully at the sight of
the opponent.
It is necessary to extract
the maximum power of
the shoulder
The hip joint is relaxed
It is important that the knee
does not go ahead
Heel of rear foot is raised
slightly
Heel of front foot is on
the floor
Body work is a movement to the victory
The stances, leg movements and protection
techniques used by foreign athletes may seem
unusual for the Japanese who have absorbed love
for karate with mother’s milk. Some people even
complain that the mass distribution of karate
abroad undermines its foundations. Nevertheless,
it is impossible to deny the fact that European
athletes still very seriously relate to this kind of
martial arts. They examine not only its various flows,
but also karate technique. When studying other
Japanese martial arts, the Europeans try to find
techniques that could be applied in karate. Naturally,
this is implemented in a way that the defensive
techniques do not go counter to the established
rules. In this regard, we consider it necessary to
investigate the body work used in boxing.
The situation changes dramatically even for
those who think that all this does not concern them,
since it refers to the international competitions.
The new rules will entail a change of mind of
referees as a result the athletes who are good
command of protective body work techniques will
have more advantages.
Listen to the opinions of professionals
Given the situation, we decided to proceed
without delay to the investigation of protective
Karate and boxing:
search for points of coincidence
techniques used in boxing, and have developed a
plan to this end.
Following this plan, we have made every effort to
find boxers – athletes or trainers who use the closest
to karate techniques in their defense. Among them,
we are interested in the boxer Takehiro Shimada,
who used the technique in his movements, having
a lot to do with karate which became widespread
in European countries. We managed to collect
the material with the help of Takehiro, which we
hope will be interesting and useful to our readers. As
it is indicated in the athlete’s profile, he is 38-year-
old military servant and is going to participate in the
World Championships. Taking into account only this
fact, it is possible to understand that Takehiro is not
just technical athlete. He is spoken of as an athlete
who knows well the theory.
We started with the fact that Takehiro Shimada
asked to see the video of the world championship
held in Tokyo in 2008. He singled out Aghayev
among all the participants of the tournament.
In recognition of Takehiro, it seemed to him that
the leg movements, the protection of Rafael were
similar to his own performance.
Combine the defense
and the attack
The most important thing in the body work
in a boxing is close cooperation of the defense
and the attack. Therefore, the significance of
the stances is difficult to overestimate. The picture
on the left shows the main points of Shimada’s
stance. Again, the stances, defense and attack
should always be in close interaction. However, it is
impossible to perform perfect defense and attack
due to the presence of an opponent, there is no
need to follow the rules strictly.
At first, you should practice shadow boxing
in the mirror. It would be useful to carry out
the movements in a big way, so that the body could
remember them. The next step will be conditional
duels (yakusoku kumite); you can negotiate with a
partner to attack you free and slow. Free sparring
shall be at the end, but it cannot be immediately
carried out at high level. It is necessary to divide
the training into several stages and follow them
exactly.
Due to the fact that the following techniques
are closely related to kumite, it is advisable to use
training methods used in karate.

“Ducking”
Now let’s start to analyze the individual techniques.
The word “ducking” comes from the English word
duck. Due to this reason, the movement, when
the athlete, like a diving duck, gently bends his
knees and quickly lowers his head to avoid hitting of
the opponent is called ducking.
We would like to draw attention to a feature of
this technique. You should “dive” by your body using
only the knees, in order not to destroy the position.
However, this nuance is only a basic principle, and
if it is useful in boxing at attack in close combat,
then it is no longer effective in karate with a sharp
decrease of the distance.
Ducking, which Shimada uses at the competitions
is not just body take off, but alike to “twisting”
the upper part of the body to the left and right
(photo B, C).
Basically, you need to practice as shown in the
photo above (photo A1–2) to master the technique of
ducking and lowering the knee. Keep in mind: lowering
the body should not be performed at the expense of
“bow”, but using the knees.
Once the body gets used to the movement, you can
proceed to the ducking, hiding your shoulders slightly
and twisting the body as shown in the photo on the
left. In boxing the hook or uppercut come out usually
from this position. This is why, it is pretty convenient
position for boxers. But we need to carefully examine
what strikes will be effective from this stance
in karate.

Weaving
Weaving is a technique performed by moving
the head or the upper part of the body in all directions
with the purpose of evading the opponent’s attacks.
In combination with the movements of the feet, it is
quite complete movement demonstrating the high
level of technique, where the attack and defense are
combined.
When training this technique, the athletes are
recommended to use of upper part of the body on the
basic stage and try to draw the letter U by the head.
Initially, it is necessary to be trained in front of
the mirror making sweeping motions. It is necessary
to repeat the exercise constantly, perform it from
right to left and from left to right, without taking your
eyes off the opponent and using the movement of
the knees (photo E and D).
It is important that the head to be constantly
directed towards the opponent. And trainings should
be carried out in such a way that you should be ready
at any moment to start an attack.
Learning of the basic positions should be begun
in slightly relaxed position. The chin is pressed
against the body. Shifting your weight to right leg,
bend the knee and at the same time, keeping your
lower back lowered, move the body to the right (photo
D 1–2). In this position, the knee is extended and
the body is pulled to the right side.
At the next stage, start to carry your weight from
the right foot to the left. While relying on your left leg,
stretch to the left (photo E 1–3). The most important
thing in this series of movements is outlining the letter
U using your head.
In order to carry out the shifting of your body weight
smoothly, you should practice in front of the mirror.

Head slipping
Swaying
The head slipping
is soft use of upper part of
the body to protect against
the strike of the opponent.
When performing this
technique, athletes press
their chin against the body
and make the sliding
motions left to right
using their heads. At the
same time it is important
that the body remained
tense in the process of
the moving of the center
of gravity to left and
right. The flexibility and
tense of the body should
be present at the same
time in this technique.
Another important point:
the head should not be
just shaken from side to
side but makes smooth
movements. If you do
not learn these simple
rules, it is unlikely that
you succeed to go to
the attack.
Based on what is cur
rently used in the sport
karate, the training of
the upper body in the
transition to the attack
brings great benefit from
the technique of conscious
head slipping (photo G, F).
A f t e r t r an s f e r r ing
the center of gravity of
the body on the rear foot,
the body slightly departs
back. In boxing the shoulder
block is added to this. It is
possible to sway the body
quickly back due to
the sharp tense of prelum
abdominale. It is very
important to sway the chin
also, as the attack follows
this position.
To enter swaying to
karate, it is required
to reconcile them with
the footwork, but if you hone
this technique, the distance
of swaying from the blow
increases. Moreover, time of
switching to attack reduces
and makes this technique
very useful in most cases
(photo H).

35. JKFan: Mr. Shimada, you have watched a video of
the Karate World Championship. Could you assess
the body work technique of foreign athletes?
Shimada: They have quite skillful defense. There
are even some athletes, who seem that they were
engaged in boxing training under the guidance of boxer
coach. I found it interesting that there are athletes
who can produce protection with spontaneous
movements. It seems that Rafael Aghayev has fairly
high level of protective technique. In general, it is
interesting to observe how seriously the Japanese
athletes use body movements borrowed from boxing
though redundant movements occur from time
to time.
JKFan: It is no secret that the style of boxing
tournaments significantly differs from the karate
competitions. Therefore, effective protective
techniques must be also different in these sports.
What do you think about this?
Shimada: In my opinion, athletes from other
countries too often use what is called weaving in the
box and head slipping. I think in the box, it would be
more effective to use other techniques of defense and
attack in close contact.
JKFan: And what are the differences between
karate and boxing rushed into your eyes?
Shimada: It is difficult to assess the effectiveness
of the blow, while you do not try it. The effect of
the blow in box depends on its physical strength.
Even seemingly unnatural blow will be effective, if it is
based on physical laws.
JKFan: We would like to know how, in your opinion,
it is necessary to perform an effective strike?
Shimada: The greatest strength occurs in the
process of the output of the energy concentrated
in the hip joint, for example, when hitting with twisting
the lumbus. Of course, the hands must also be
trained, but if we talk about the power source, it is
in the hip joint. Therefore, the body work must be
performed in a way to gain strength in the pelvis and
immediately use it in an attack. It makes no sense
to simply avoid the blow or weave from it. Perhaps,
the effectiveness is also based on this principle of
power in karate. In this case, the body work of boxing
will be useful for karate.
We familiarized you with defensive techniques, which are used in boxing. But
we think it does not make sense just to study them in the form they exist due to
the reason the defense and attack in boxing and karate have significant differences.
We wish the readers to understand that mastering of defensive boxing techniques
may be an advantage in the sport karate. Thus, we decided to look at the movements
of karate through the prism of professional boxer and asked Takehiro Shimada to give
some advice to future Japanese karate athletes.
That’s all the
“courage” of protection…

Does the blow miss the goal?
Great benefit
of small weaving
Special training for weaving is not almost held
in karate sections, acting schools and universities
of Japan. It is believed that it is unnecessary.
Therefore, the emphasis is to develop skills to reflect
the opponent’s attacks. On the contrary, the special
attention is paid to the study of these techniques abroad.
And there is simple explanation: many countries do not
use protective gear in the competition, and the athletes
avoid techniques that may be dangerous for the face,
for example, the same counter chudan. This is applied
because simple weaving is less risky than a reflection
of the blow that can bring only one point.
It turns out that foreign athletes often practice
weaving, but the Japanese who do not focus on it, this
technique may seem surprising.
The opponent chooses response tactics –
weaving or counterblow – depending on the nature
of the opponent’s attack. Although these tactics are
similar in something, they require different response.
Therefore, to understand the weaving technique used
by foreigners, it would be good to include it in training
practice.

does French school
have? The French
training system was
presented at a seminar
with the participation
of athletes from
the different
countries, conducted
after the Paris
Open International
Tournament, the first
stage of the Karate
Premier League of
WKF. Photos 1–9 show
the main body work
exercises presented
at the seminar. Due to
the exercises, which
include swaying and
head slipping, the habit
of moving gently with
the upper part of
the body is formed. If
you do not learn these
basic exercises, it will
be difficult to move
smoothly, without
jerks. We warn that it is
necessary to weave
in those directions
where the opponent
does not direct
blow. Usually, it is
in the “blind spot” of
the opponent closer to
the back. In addition,
this weaving should
be done without legs,
keeping your location.
Again, these exercises
are good to acquire
smoothness and free
dom of the upper part
of the body.

Further, the same exercises are performed with distance increase
(photo J1–4). As we have said, it is important to weave closer to
the opponent’s back. The photo shows the punch with the fist on the “one-
two”, and if in response to the “one” you weave towards the opponent,
he will be able to prevent your action with the help of the right fist. And
if you weave closer to the back of the opponent at “one” count, you can
gain some advantage.
In the next stage the athlete asks the partner to put careful strokes,
and he performs weaving without hands at the same time holding on the
belt (photos K 1–6). It is important to keep the body relaxed and free.
As soon as the body work is performed free and the position in the
opponent’s “blind spot” will be set, the attack should be added to
the exercise. Thus, foreign athletes often pre-create for themselves
the required conditions to strike at the trainings and do not cause
spontaneous retaliation.
In addition, the seminar also covered other training aspects, such
as how to perform uramavashi, apply an effective retaliation, until
the opponent is confused, and others.

Figure 2
The key to the body
work is to control the neck
The body work includes “ducking”, weaving,
head slipping, swaying and other tricks. The whole
body is involved in all movements except for head
slipping. However, when observing athletes who
skillfully masters body work, you will notice they have
something common. The diligent body work is seen
in their movements. In particular, skillful work of
neck-bone is highlighted. To understand the work of
the neck, imagine how to beat the rhythm of the dance
or walk of the pigeon or chicken.
Thus, bigger advantage is the ability to move
the neck not only forward and backward, but the left
and right as in the east dance.
During the weaving the opponent’s attack, if
you use the neck movement, the weaving can be
performed much faster without offsetting the balance.
To imagine this look at the picture, compare Figures
1 and 2.
If you weave from hitting using simple left-
right weavings, the movements of the neck will be
limited (Figure 1) and it is unlikely you will be able
to involve the entire body. This not only slows down
the movements, but the balance is disturbed.
On the contrary, when using your neck in weaving
as in Figure 2, at first head moves parallel to
the floor, then – the thoracic spine and at the
end – the lumbar are enacted. With this procedure
the amplitudes of movements decreases, they
become faster, while maintaining balance. There
is another advantage: due to the fact that the view
is still horizontal, the athlete has an opportunity to
watch the further attack or distance of the opponent
and react promptly to them.
It is undeniable that the Japanese athletes are
inferior to foreign competitors in this aspect, as
the Japanese people do not have the habit of moving
their neck in defensive body work. For example,
the residents of African countries use this movement
in everyday life, so it is easy to implement it in the body
work in karate.
It should be noted that if the athlete has
the concept of strong axis, it will be difficult to move
the body dividing it into sections, so you need to pay
attention to it.
When we study the body work, it is necessary not
just copy the surface of foreign athletes: to master
the movements of the neck is not superfluous for
the basis.

40. “Hammercock blow”
How to build a robust
defense?
The theme of this special
issue is body work. In the world
sport karate these techniques
have long been widely used
in competitions. Since April 2013
the international tournaments
in Japan will be held according to
new rules adopted by the world, so
these techniques must find their
place also in the competitions
within the country. In anticipation
of their popularity, we will try to
present you the punch, which will
help to confront the opponent
possessing these techniques, and
earn points.
Firstly, what changes are
required to endure blows
in response to changes in body
work? Since the body movements
are performed not only forward
and backward, and left and right,
up and down in all directions, it is
likely to miss them.
In this case, for example, you
can make it a rule to perform small
tricks like in boxing, while “reading”
the intentions of the opponent,
and attack only at convenient
moment. The second point: as
big movements will come under
the ban, kizami tsuki will be
particularly popular as it can
be performed with the shortest
distance. From this perspective,
it is already possible to regard
the possibility of participation
in the international competitions.
If you use gyaku tsuki,
the opponent can weave by using
“duckings” and weavings. For
example, you can see it when tall
athlete and the athlete of medium
height with short arms come to
the mat. In a duel of such rivals
Kizami tsuki –
“read” the plans of the opponent!
by Shin Tsuki
40
41. the rhythm of the attacks often
disorders, since the opponent
is immediately ahead of
the defense during the blow, and
it becomes difficult to perform
the technique. Therefore,
the most important thing is that
the opponent could not predict
the course of action. First, this
requires keeping your armpits
closed during the blow.
In other words:
1. It is necessary to strike
the target at minimum distance.
The blow must be such as if
it does not have a start.
2. The strike should be
performed with the closed
armpits.
Thus, if you will master
the basics of this technique,
there is no reason for concern.
No matter how the style of
competition changes, the main
thing is to learn the basis, and
then it will be easy to navigate
in the situation.
First of all, you should
understand that the above
mentioned use of kizami tsuki
significantly affects the outcome
of the battle.
Now we discuss body work
techniques in response to
kizami tsuki.
Tateken and kizami tsuki:
is there a relationship?
Punch of straight fist – seiken
tsuki – is considered as the most
typical for karate. Perhaps, this
punch is paid maximum attention
during the training. But punches
are not limited to one seiken tsuki
in karate. For example, there
is also ura tsuki punch, in which
the rear side of the palm faces
down. In general, the punches
can be divided into several
groups: ura tsuki is a punch from
close distance, tate tsuki (punch
using fist arranged vertically) is a
punch from medium distance,
seiken tsuki is a punch from far
distance. Although this is the main
distribution, in practice you should
also take into account what part of
the body and the angle the punch
is directed at.
Occasionally, if the athlete
opens side and armpits, he is asked
to perform tateken at the stage of
punch polishing. So the habit to
keep them closed is developed.
However, there are schools
where tateken is a part of routine
workout. If we compare direct and
vertical punches, we should not
talk about which of these attacks
is correct, but which is best suited
to a particular situation, as each of
them has its own characteristics.
Therefore, let’s first discuss
the benefits of the vertical fist.
The fist and elbow are not twisted
or bended in this punch, so you can
easily perform a punch with closed
armpits (photo L). Ideally, in case of
direct fist the armpits should also
be closed. In fact, while the basic
technique is not mastered until
the end, they are often open. If
you manage to carry out the direct
fist punch with an elbow pointing
down, the armpits are not open, but
the vast majority of athletes turn
their elbows, when turning the fist.
In recentyears,the bodyworktechniqueschange
significantlyin theglobalsportskarate.Thesechanges
will come soon to Japan. Moreover, they will affect not
only the defense, but also the attack. But we believe
that there are not particular reasons to concern: you
do not need to learn gain all the technique, you just
need to understand some of the ideas to be ready to
accept the world changes. Make a note of keywords
that allow you to control body work technique – kizami
tsuki, tateken and “hammercock blow”.

To keep the armpits closed
is more important than you think.
We have already said that if
the armpits are open, it is easy to
predict future actions. Moreover,
when armpits are open, the force
disappears from the elbow area
and, consequently, overall power
reduces.
Finally, the biggest drawback
of open armpits is that it allows
the opponent to retaliate easily.
When the armpits are open,
the rivals are instinctively triggered
to act. If the body is assembled,
the shoulder, elbow and fist do not
stick out and punch goes exactly
straight, the response is much
more difficult to produce.
When using a vertical fist in
kizami tsuki, the response of
the opponent is slower. However,
we do not advise to adopt only this
punch. It has its disadvantages
like any other technique. One
of them is the fact that when
performing the vertical fist punch,
some athletes notice that power
outlet is partial.
To solve this problem we offer
you to master the “hammercock
blow” technique.
About science
of nailing
Technique of hammering is the
movement of the wrist as in nailing.
“Hammering” is manifested in the
wrist flexion without twisting
the arm. If you use this technique
in conjunction with a vertical
fist, kizami tsuki becomes more
complete.
This strike is called “ham
mercock blow”. We believe that
this technique will be useful
not only for kizami tsuki, but for
gyaku tsuki.
“Hammercock blow”
To get started, try to imagine
that you are holding a hammer,
and you want to drive a nail, which
is located at some distance from
you (photo M 1–2). Additionally,
you cannot bend the wrist forcibly.
42
43. O-1
O-2
O-3
O-4
You should imagine that the fist
goes smoothly forward to the goal.
To understand better the nature
of this technique, we recommend
to practice with the help of real
hammer or mallet at first.
Having learnt the principle of
the punch, ask your partner to
avoid your kizami tzuki using body
work. When performing the punch,
try to use the technique of direct fist
and hammering. In case of typical
direct fist punch, the opponent
can easily weave (photo 1), and
in case of the “hammercock blow”
you will notice that the reaction
of the partner will be somewhat
delayed (photo 2).
In the case of “hammercock
blow”, the power is concentrated
in the hands, the blades become
more mobile, and the punch
is longer. Moreover, since the hand
becomes more mobile, the punch
becomes smoother.
During the training of
the technique we advise you
to make sure that the hand
tightly squeezes the handle of
the hammer. If possible, we
recommend perfecting the punch
on makiwara – the simulator
in the form of rolled-up straw or a
baseball glove.
“Hammer” inhibits
the opponent’s response
Now try to hit the opponent using
the technique of hammercock blow
(photo 01–4). Use of other parts
of the body is basically the same
as the use of the hand. Firstly,
try to hit stationary partner. Once
you achieve the reliable punch,
let him to strike you back. At the
same time, try both to use straight
fist and “hammercock blows”
in kizami tsuki. You will notice that
the partner’s reaction is different.
When using the “hammercock
blow”, the stance of the opponent
will be simplified, as his response
is delayed. Even if the response
of the opponent will be late even
for one second out of hundred,
his posture will collapse, and
he will not be able to go back to
the desired position easily.
Having understood this
technique, try also to perform
gyaku tsuki. If the opponent calmly
controlled the speed and the time
before, he will come into confusion
when you use the technique of
“hammercock blow”.
How to resist
the body work?
Even the “hammercock blow”
is not always successful against
the athlete who is skillful in body
work. But even the weaving has
huge difference, whether it is
performed retaining the starting
position or not.
As soon as the opponent’s
stance is destroyed, you
gradually accept the advantage. If
the opponent manages to evade
your punches, you start to feel
worse the distance, and control
over the fight moves to your
opponent.
Thus, you should not rely on one
hundred percent success. Guided
by the principle “stand-off at the
worst”, do not let the opponent
get points, since you are unable
to earn them. If you do not get
hung up on the score, you ought
to interfere with the opponent
to perform tricks all the time,
and then the advantage will be
on your side.

45. A new page in the history of relations between the Japan
Karate-do Federation (JKF) and the International
Karate Organization (ICO) Kyokushinkai
For the future of karate-do
Shokei Matsui, The President of the International
Karate Organization (ICO) Kyokushinkai
For a long time, namely since its foundation, JKF and Kyo-
kushinkai Organization had not common ground. Each of them
chose the way of development, and it was believed that they
would never sit down at the negotiating table, but everything
changed on April 16, 2015. On this day, the organizations
signed a memorandum, which envisages the development of
the policy of maintaining friendly relations, cooperation and
mutual assistance.
Half-century history
1964 was a landmark for the world of karate
in Japan: JKF and Kyokushinkai Organization were
established based on “Oyama” dojo. Also this year is
remarkable in history thanks to the Olympic Games
held in Japan, which has received a special status
due to the inclusion of such discipline as judo in
the Olympic Programme. At the same time, JKF
attempted to achieve karate-do inclusion in the
Olympic Programme. A half of a century later the
history repeats: Tokyo waits for the Olympic Games
and hopes for karate joining the Olympic family. At
this time, JKF has developed an entire program to
implement the most cherished goal of all karate
community under the slogan “Olympic Games 2020”.
Despite the fact that karate as a martial art is
recognized by the world community and has many
followers and admirers, it is still not in the list of the
Olympic sports. One of the reasons for this situation
is the fragmentation expressed in the division of
karate styles into contact and contactless types of
the combat. An example is the history of relations
between JKF and Kyokushinkai Organization. Two
organizations virtually had no contact for a long
time. And their paths crossed...
Shokei Matsui, The President of the International
Karate Organization (ICO) Kyokushinkai, told us what
the impetus was for this turn of events and what to
expect in the future.

47. Q: Tell us the background of the memorandum of
friendly relations.
A: The representatives of our organization have
good fellowship with the leaders and representatives
of JKF concerning work. Thanks to the skillful efforts
of these people, the first meeting was held in the
office of the President of Sasagawa.
I think many people know that even before the
issue related to the Olympics was raised, I have always
advocated that it would be good to unite the world of
karate in one thing. And, of course, I have always said
that I would be happy to meet the representatives of
the traditional flows.
And when I was told that Mr. Sasagawa wants
to meet me, I realized that, given time, we will talk
about the Olympics. Therefore, I gladly accepted the
invitation, as I considered it a good opportunity to
start a relationship with JKF.
I’m sorry, but I had the impression that Sasagawa-
san is rather tough and strong person, but when we
met, our acquaintance was very warm. I realized what
high things this man is concerned with, as far as he
is full of thoughts about the development of healthy
children and youth.
Then, in the process of our next meetings,
Sasagawa-san suggested: “In order karate to be
included in the Olympic Programme, the whole world
of karate should be united. Let us work together for
the future of children who are engaged in karate.”
We know that karate-do makes many efforts to get
into the Olympic Programme for half a century, and
that the IOC recognizes the rules of WKF as the rules
of karate. In terms of security, these rules are very
good. And on the basis of mutual respect, I promised
to assist in raising the social status of karate-do.
Q: Can you tell us more specifically, what kind of
cooperation do you mean?
A: We’re each going on its own way for already
fifty years. During this time, a kind of antagonism
occurred between us, it must be admitted that this
resulted in the fact that each party has received
some negative impact. Now we have decided to start
an interchange of information, recognize some best
sides of each other and try to direct all the best to
the development of the karate-do world.
Someone might say that Matsui “knuckled” under
JKF but it is not true. Our friendly relations are built
on the recognition of the charm of the contact
battle. Our main principle is mutual respect and non-
interference in each other’s lives.
Thus, I think that the movement “in the Olympics”
became a good opportunity for rapprochement.
I heartily wish that karate to become the Olympic
sport. But even if something goes wrong and fortune
does not favors us, the establishment of friendly
relations will influence very well on karate and its
future.
The desire for something better is wonderful! This
is the true way...
Q: If karate-do will be the Olympic sport, what will
kyokushinkai acquire?
A: As it has been said already, despite the fact,
whether karate will be a part of the Olympics or not,
we still want to interact at both the organizational and
the human and technical level. Especially we want to
start to learn the rules of JKF. When I was an active
athlete, I often thought about how I would have played
in the tournaments of JKF. I think we could learn the
technique from a distance.
I plan to invite instructors from JKF and conduct
the seminars for all comers. But if karate becomes
the Olympic sport, I would like to grow at least one
athlete to participate in the Olympic Games. However,
all this will be not forcibly, but taking into account the
wishes of everyone.
Q: Thank you very much for the interview.
A: Thank you.
To speed up the implementation of
the possibility of entering the Olympic Games.

48. Fluid replacement
for the karate athletes
Takayuki Asai
Senior lecturer of Sports Department
of the Shohan School of Medicine and
Welfare.
The coach of the rugby section
of Kantogakuin School and volleyball
section of Seiho University focuses on the
emergence of diseases associated with
overheating during summer training. He
is the head of the theme “Easy breathing
body” as a supervisor to monitor
the rhythm of the body, and is in charge
of human resources development in NAS
sports center.
More recently, it was believed that fluid
replacement during the exercise is an indicator of
weakness of spirit and lack of fighting will of the
athlete. Now drinking of the liquid during training
has become commonplace. Do you know how the
shortage of water in the body is determined? What
drink should you prefer and how to determine its
optimal quantity?
This article will help you to learn how to
replace fluid.

49. What is dehydration?
Have you ever thought how much liquid the body
of an adult contains? It is supposed that about 60 %.
Reducing the amount of liquid is just dehydration.
If you lose 2 % of body weight (if the athlete weighs
70 kg, then 2 % is 1.4 kg) it is the dehydration. Signs
of dehydration may also be dry skin and lips, drying
in the throat and weakness. But let’s not to reduce
everything only to the poor state of health and try to
figure out why this happens. And it is necessary to pay
special attention to the fact that dehydration is often
a consequence of overheating during workouts in the
summer.
The liquid level in the body can be
determined by the color of urine
First, you need to make it a rule be weighed before
and after the workout and record the weight difference.
Changes in weight speak about the loss of fluid during
exercise. It does not matter how much liquid you drink
during training, when your weight is changed by more
than 2 %, we can talk about the failure to replenish it.
Virtually, all the athletes lose 2 % or more of weight
during one training session in the summer in a room
without air conditioning. The body reduces quantity of
urine as a response to the fluid reduction. And urine
color becomes more saturated. Thus, it is possible to
control the liquid level in the body, when observing
only the change in the color of urine.

Ways to replenish fluids
The sports schools and boarding schools each
athlete monitors and records own weight before
and after sleep, before and after the training. And
if the weight decreased after exercise, an athlete
adheres to the mandatory condition – to regain weight
until the next workout. Otherwise, liquid level in his
body will gradually decrease with every subsequent
training.
It is very important for the athletes not only
to exercise and eat right, but also get the liquid to
the extent necessary. Therefore, they must always
carry water or other beverage with them.

50. Drink before
the throat becomes dry
What is the best way to replenish the fluid during
the exercises? First, cool drink suits the best. Cool
drink is absorbed in the stomach faster than warm.
When the throat dries, it is a signal that you have
already lost fluids of your body and its drawback
is obvious. Therefore, it is better to drink every
30 minutes to avoid drying of the throat. During
the workout, it is better to drink a little from the bottle,
and during a break to have glasses of water.
What is better to drink?
When choosing a drink, it is better to follow
personal preferences. However, the same teas,
whether black or green, contain caffeine, which has
diuretic effect, so the body receiving the liquid, quickly
removes it from the body. Those athletes who are
fond of teas or coffee should be more careful in the
summer. I do not say: “Avoid tea or coffee!”, but only
draw attention to the need for control, which will help
to prevent the dehydration.
If the training lasts for more than two hours,
the body begins to need a source of energy – sugar,
which is better to drink in sports drink dissolved.
Recently, the sports drinks contain amino-acids
“BCAA”. They protect muscles and quickly remove
fatigue, so they are often used by the athletes.
Also citric acid is very effective to relieve fatigue,
which is contained in the lemon and plum. Pharmacies
sell drugs containing only citric acid. The citric acid
itself has sour taste, so it can be added to the drink
to your taste, and thus create your “own brand” of
the beverage.
The constant use of liquid
Often one can observe the following picture: after
an intense workout, the athletes, who overcome by
thirst, drink plenty of fluids and interrupt the appetite.
In the meantime, the athletes need to receive
adequate nutrition to relieve fatigue and restore
physical activity. For example, watermelon and
vegetables help effectively to replenish the liquid,
so the menu should include foods with high liquid
content. Tomatoes, cucumbers, and other vegetables
and cool soups also should be added here. It can
be also recommended to cool the body and actively
include in the menu foods that stimulate appetite.
Management of sporting life
To give-it-all in training is common phenomenon,
so it is very important to be able to maintain their
strength every day to be in great shape. This requires
a good sleep, nutrition and high-quality drink. All this
affects the quality of training. Therefore, it is very
important to understand your body and be able to
combine the best methods and techniques to support
it. This will be the key to successful move forward.
