THE NATIONAL SPORT
-Hockey
 By this time, Indian hockey had
established a proud record of
winning as many as eight gold
medals at the Olympics which
has not been paralleled by any
hockey playing nation so far.
The period from 1928 to 1964
can reasonably be described as
the ‘Golden Age’ of Indian
hockey.
 The Indian men's field hockey
team is the most successful
field hockey team in Olympic
history with 8 gold, 1 silver,
and 2 bronze medals.
 Field hockey was introduced to
India in 1885.
 The game of Archery has got historical
significance as all royals in the ancient days used
to practice archery.
 Modern day archery started in early 1970s
before its Introduction in Olympics 1972.
 Formalized in 1973 when Archery Association of
India(AAI) came into existence.
 India has been producing some world class
players who are medal hopefuls in International
events of Archery.
 In India, shooting is generally regarded as
an expensive sports which only the affluent,
powerful and the talented with institutional
support can pursue with a serious career.
Abhinav Bindra won the first
individual Olympic gold for India.
 Major Rajyavardhan Rathore won the
silver medal in Men’s Double Trap at the
2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
 Eleven Indian shooters qualified for
London Olympics.
 India has been most successful in this
categorey this year with Gagan Narang
and Vijay Kumar winning bronze nd silver
medal respectively.
 These people has become the role models
of young Indian shooters.
 IT has helped the Indian shooters a great
deal in getting international exposure and
concentrate on their horning skills.
 Chess has risen in popularity in India in the last
few decades primarily due to its star player
GM Vishwanathan Anand.
 It is believed that the game originated from
India as a successor to Chaturanga or Shatranj.
 The All India Chess Federation is the governing
body for chess in India.
 According to the WORLD CHESS FEDERATION
Vishwanathan Anand ranks No. 2 after Magnus
Carlsen ( 22 years old chess Grandmaster).
 Football was introduced in India during the
British Rule and in some parts of the
country, it is equally popular as cricket.
 India ranks 154th in the FIFA rankings as of
February 29th, 2012.
 The All India Football Federation was
formed on 23rd June 1937.
 The period from 1951 to 1962 is considered
the golden era in Indian football.
 The 1948 Olympics was India's first major
international tournament
 Boxing is one of the most enjoyable profiled sports in
India.
 Regular medal-holder at Asian Games and
Commonwealth games.
 November 2007, India’s Mary Kon won best boxer
title and also secured hattrick of titles.
 2008 Beijing Olympic, Vijendra Kumar won a bronze
medal in middle weight boxing category and Akhil
Kumar and Jitendra Kumar qualified for quaterfinals.
 Akhil Kumar, Jitendra Kumar, A.l Lakra and
Dinesh Kumar each won a bronze medal at
2008 World Championship.
 This shows how progressively Boxing has
been developed in India .
 Vijender Kumar is current no.1 on
middleweight class.
 India’s lonely women boxer M.C. Mary Kom
secured a bronge medal at London Olympics
Games, 2012.
 Considering as one of the most ancient and
oldest sports in the world, Wrestling in
India has a glorious past.
 Journey of Wrestling started in India
several centuries back, during Middle Ages.
 Counted as most prestigious and oldest
events in Olympic Games, as it was
included in Olympics in 708 BC.
Wrestling in India is most famously known
as ‘Malla-Yuddha’.
 These can be
found in great
epic of Indian
history.
Mahabharata
has a huge
mention about
the game
wrestling in
India.
 CRICKET is the most popular sport in India.
 The Indian national cricket team won the 1983
world cup , the 2007 world twenty20, and the
2011 world cricket cup, the 2013 ICC champions
trophy, and shared the 2002 ICC champions
trophy with Sri Lanka
 Sachin Tendulkar is the only player to have
scored one hundred international centuries, the
first batsman to
score a double
century in a
One day international,
 Legends like VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid,
Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly
forming the most formidable batting line
up in the world.
 India went on to become the pioneer in
TEST CRICKET.
 As compared to other sporting nations,
India’s achievement may be meager but we
need to keep in mind the infrastructure and
other such conditions which are essential for
a big country.
 India has always been short of this but as of
now, it has steadily developed and
encouraged building sports persons.
We should look at the 6 medals in 2012
olympics as a small scale achievement, but
as a giant leap towards a positive future.
