1. We learn lessons from many people if we are open to
learning. You are working on a paper concerning "A Hard
Lesson You Have Learned." To add to your learning on this
project, go to the internet and look until you find a good source
from someone you may know about concerning "Lessons
Learned." Examples of famous people who share their ideas are
Oprah Winfrey and famous football coach, Lou Holz. Below are
websites where you may find these lessons. You are not
required to use these. Search for people you are interested in
knowing.
Do the following:
A. Many people influence our lives.Sometimes we are
influenced by people we will never meet. Have you been
influenced by people whom you have never met? Who are these
people? What impresses you about them?
Write a paragraph answering these questions.
B. Go to one of the websites below and review what is
available. Choose one of these websites or another website that
gives you information on successful people. Give a quote that
you think is important from this website. Also, in your own
words talk about why you think this quote is important and what
it means to you.
Write a paragraph about this research.

2. For this forum, you will watch a TV show (not bad for an
assignment) and read online what someone else (usually known
as a critique) has to say about this show. Answer the following:
A.
What is a tv show that you really think is worth your time to
watch? It does not have to be educational but choose something
you think gives you some information either through
entertainment or directly. What do you like about this show?
How long have you been watching it? Why do you recommend it
to others?
3. This forum requires students to go on line and find an article
from a major newspaper: New York Times, Washington Post,
Chicago Tribune, Houston Chronicle, Dallas Morning News,
etc. that discusses a major problem in society today.
For Post 1: Answer this opinion question (no research required).
What do you think are some of the most important problems in
our society today? If you had to pick one major one, what would
it be and why?
Summarize the research you have found in a good well
constructed paragraph. Cite your source and separate out your
information from the source information by giving the source
credit.
4. An important part of research is finding sources that can be
trusted. This forum asks you first to
(1) Comment on why you think it is important to scrutinize your
sources to find out if they are credible or not? This can apply to
our personal life as well as our academic and business life?
Can you think of an example, in every day life, where it was
very important for you to trust your source? Or if not, what are
some general areas of life
where you think it is especially important to trust information?
5. One of the best ways to avoid plagiarism is to learn how to
correctly paraphrase sources. Sometimes this is not easy
because we may be using some of the author's language when
we get the main ideas for our research paper. In personal life,
business life, and in college life, the question of the day is:
How do we give people the credit they deserve? You may have
know individuals who take credit for other people's
achievements and also refuse to recognize the achievements of
others. Is this the right thing to do? For this week's forum, do
the following:
REMEMBER TO GET FULL CREDIT, EACH POST MUST BE
A PARAGRAPH.
(1) Make a general comment about how you feel about taking
credit for someone else's work. What are the issues involved? Is
this prevalent in our society?
(2) For your research, look up a "credible" source on
paraphrasing APA style and paraphrase from that source. Giving
the source credit. HAPPY PARAPHRASING!
6. In English 107 we write "argument research papers." This
means that we need to take a fairly strong position on a subject
we have chosen so we can "argue with passion" about our ideas.
To enjoy writing an argument paper this is essential...and we do
want to enjoy writing our papers as well as write them
correctly.
Post concerning the following:
(1) Do you like to argue in general? Does the word have a
negative connotation for you? Arguing can be an activity that
wastes our time because of the way we present our ideas and
also the emotions we may express. In college, arguing has a
different meaning. We are learning to present our ideas in a
logical and , mostly, nonemotional way. We do , however need
to express that we care about the subject. Comment on how you
feel about "arguing" in personal, business, and school life.
(2) Using your textbook and or the internet, state some of the
main points that need to be considering when composing a
formal argument.
7. Editing a final paper can often change a paper one letter
grade or more. This forum is about ways you can be a better
editor of your own paper. When we edit, we are looking for
spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraph lengths, and
unity as well as capitalization and other mechanics. Here is the
forum for this week. REMEMBER WRITE A PARAGRAPH IN
GOOD GRAMMAR.
P One: What is your biggest challenge with editing?
P Two: Look either in your text or the internet and find good
information on editing. Quote it, give the source, and make your
own comments about the quote.
8. In this forum please do two things:
(1) Evaluate how long it took you , approximately, to complete
the final paper.
(2) Comment on how you think learning these skills will or will
not assist you in your future school, personal, and business
endeavors.
To get credit, remember answers must be in paragraph format
and use proper grammar.
Even though students have already completed an official
evaluation. It would help me to know the following:
1. What part of the class did you enjoy the most?
2. What part of the class did you consider most valuable?
3. What part of the class could be left out?
4. What should be added to the class?
Other?
