28. Balance
Too much writing makes it a report.
We’re not looking for a report here.
Reports are dull and, to be honest,
nobody really wants to read them, do
they? If your presentations are all
words, words, words, it’s like having to
sit and listen to a lecture. How dull is
that? Sure, some people can lecture in an
interesting way, but they are few and far between.
So what we’re looking for in this project is a
balance between words and pictures.
The other reason that we’re not looking for a
report for this assignment is because when students
get assigned a “report”, their first instict is to
go off to Wikipedia and just copy down the

information. I’m sure everyone has been in a class
when a student starts reading (with head down) from
a notebook -- or worse straight from the printed
Wikipedia page -- and doesn’t look up until she’s
finished Ugh! And then there’s the content of the
report, if anyone’s still listening. Who cares what
the population of Malaysia is? It’s all so
decontextualized. If anyone really wants to know
the population of Malaysia, they’ll just Google it.
UGH again! If I have to listen to another “report”
like that, I think I’ll go jump off a bridge.
So, back to the purpose of overviews like this. Think about
why you’re doing it. Think about what your classmates want
to hear. Make connections. Make it interesting. Think of
yourself as a diplomat, a “gateway” into your topic. Your
job is to make people care about what you care about.
