 Ειρήνη είναι η μυρουδιά του φαγητού το
βράδυ, τότε που το σταμάτημα του
αυτοκινήτου στο δρόμο δεν είναι φόβος,
τότε που το χτύπημα στην πόρτα σημαίνει
φίλος…………
 Ειρήνη είναι ένα ποτήρι ζεστό γάλα κι ένα
βιβλίο μπροστά στο παιδί που
ξυπνάει………….
 Η ειρήνη είναι τα σφιγμένα χέρια των
ανθρώπων, είναι το ζεστό ψωμί στο τραπέζι
του κόσμου, είναι το χαμόγελο της μάνας
Τιποτ΄ άλλο δεν είναι ειρήνη

ανασαίνει όλος ο κόσμος με όλα τα όνειρά

 Peace is the smell of eating at night,
when stopping the car on the way
there is no fear, then the knock at the
door means friend……
 Peace is a glass of warm milk and a
book in front of a child who wakes
up……
 Peace is the prissy hands of the people,
is the hot bread on the table of the
people, is the smile of a mother,
Nothing else is peace.
 Brothers, straight to peace wide open she
breathes the whole world with all our
dreams. Give your hands my brothers, this
is peace.

3.  «...Στη μεγάλη κάμαρα με τη τζαμαρία, κάτω από το μεγάλο μας
τραπέζι, ήταν πεσμένη ανάσκελα, με το άσπρο της δαντελένιο
μπλουζάκι κατακόκκινο η γυναίκα μου, νεκρή, και δίπλα της ο γιος
μας, ο Νίκος, πέντε χρονών, σφιγμένος από το αριστερό χέρι της
μάνας του, πεθαμένος κι αυτός. Τα μάτια του ήταν ορθάνοιχτα σαν να
με περίμεναν να με ρωτήσουν: '' Γιατί, τι τους κάναμε και μας
σκότωσαν!»
 “....In the big room with the glass partition, under our
big table, she was lying back, with her white laced t-shirt
in red, my wife, dead, and beside her our son, Nikos, five-
year-old, holding his mother with his left hand, also dead.
His eyes were wide open like they waited to ask me:
''Why, what we did to them and they killed us!”

του πολέμου. …όλα εκεί μέσα είχαν την όψη βιβλικής καταστροφής,
μνήματα ανασκαμμένα, σπασμένοι σταυροί, λουλούδια
ποδοπατημένα, όλα ανακατεμένα σε ένα θέαμα φρικτό.»
 “Even in the graves existed bad images because of the war. …
everything there was like a biblical destruction, broken headstones,
crosses, trampled flowers, all were mixed up in a horrible sight.”

want to be called a human''
Αν θέλεις να λέγεσαι άνθρωπος
δεν θα πάψεις ούτε στιγμή
ν΄αγωνίζεσαι για την ειρήνη
και για το δίκιο.
Θα βγεις στους δρόμους, θα
φωνάξεις, τα χείλια σου θα
ματώσουν απ' τις φωνές
το πρόσωπό σου θα ματώσει
από τις σφαίρες – μα ούτε
βήμα πίσω.
If you want to be called a
human
you will not stop a
moment to fight for peace
and for the right.
You will go out to streets,
you will shout, your lips
will bleed from shouting
your face will be bleed
from the shots – but not
one step back.

8. Stratus Myrivilis, the most famous author of
anti-war Greek literature.
 He wrote a novel based on the first World war
“Life into the grave”. He described the cruel
face of war, especially in a scene where
innocent donkeys were killed at the moment
they were enjoying the life by eating or
making love.
 Some excerpts from this novel are the
following:

9. A contrast between peacetime…………….
Τα ζα ξεκουραστήκανε κάμποσες μέρες
απ' το πολυμερίτικο περπάτημα που τα
'χε παραζαλισμένα στην κούραση.
Ξανεσάνανε. Βρήκανε κιόλας μπόλικο
χορτάρι, φάγαν και πήραν απάνω
τους, καρδάμωσαν. Τότες προσέξανε
πως ήταν χαρά Θεού πάνω στη γης, κι
ο Έρωτας κέντριζε όλα τα πάντα, από
τα μαμούδια ως τα λουλούδια, να
μπούνε μέσα στο παναιώνιο πανηγύρι
της αναπαραγωγής. Oι γαϊδάροι
ακούσαν το μεγάλο κάλεσμα και
απάντησαν με το ερωτικό τους
σάλπισμα: παρών! Υπάκουγα, γεμάτα
αθωότητα κι ανηξεριά σαν όλα τα ζα.
Η χαράδρα βούιξε από τα παράφωνα
επιθαλάμια χλιμιντρίσματα. Και ο
αντίλαλος πήρε τα ερωτικά
σαλπίσματα και τα πήγε ως πέρα στο
Περιστέρι.
The animals were allowed to rest for a few
days to recuperate from
the prolonged journey, which had left them
stunned with fatigue. They
caught their breath again. Indeed, they
discovered grass in abundance,
ate, and began to feel like their old selves.
Invigorated, they suddenly
noticed that springtime had covered the
earth with its resplendence, and
that Love was prodding all things, from
grubs to flowers, to join in the
age-old festival of reproduction. Obedient,
filled like all animals with
innocence and unknowing, the donkeys
heeded the great summons and
answered ‘Present!’ with their amorous
trumpet—call. Their ravine droned
with jarring epithalamiums; the brayings
reverberated through the
various defiles until this amorous
trumpeting reached all the way to the
Peristeri ridges

Ένα αεροπλάνο ξεκίνησε τότες
βουΐζοντας απ' αντίκρυ. Ήρθε κι
έκοψε ένα-δυο γύρους πάνω από τη
χαράδρα. Αυτοί το χαβά τους. Κατόπι
γύρισε πίσω μέσα στην αποθέωση των
οβίδων, που έσκαζαν στον ουρανό σαν
ένα κοπάδι άσπρα προβατάκια που όλο
και πλήθαιναν γύρω του…………..
Σε λίγο η λαγκαδιά βόγγησε βαριά από
μια σειρά εκρήξεις και σουβλερές
σφυριξιές. Ήταν ένα σωστό μακελειό
αθώων. Τα ζα ξεκοιλιάστηκαν,
σφάχτηκαν πάνω στο τρυφερό
χορτάρι…………
At this point an airplane took off with a
roar from somewhere opposite us. It
flew to the ravine and circled it once or
twice as for the donkeys, they did not
change their tune. The plane then
headed home amidst the enthusiastic
reception provided for it by our
anti-aircraft batteries whose shells,
bursting in the sky, surrounded it with
an ever-multiplying flock of 'little
white lambs……
Shortly afterwards a series of piercing
whistles and sonorous bangs
set the ravine bowling with pain. It
was a genuine slaughter of the
innocents. The beasts were massacred
on the tender grass …….

13. ………..Πεθαίνανε στο τέλος
βρέχοντας τα λουλούδια με το
αίμα τους, και τα μεγάλα
μάτια τους ήταν γεμάτα
απορίες και πόνους. Ένα
γαϊδουράκι με τσακισμένη τη
ραχοκοκαλιά χαμόσερνε καμιά
δεκαπενταριά μέτρα το κορμί
του, ακουμπώντας μόνο στα
μπροστινά πόδια. Κατόπι
αναδιπλώθηκε, γύρισε το
κεφάλι προς τη μεγάλη
λαβωματιά του κι
αγκομαχούσε πολλήν ώρα
ώσπου να παραδώσει.
………… In the end they died,
watering the flowers with their
blood, their huge eyes filled
with perplexity and suffering.
One animal with a broken
spine dragged its body for a
distance of about fifteen meter
supported by its front legs
only. Then its knees buckled, it
turned its head toward its
large wound, and gasped with
protracted death—throes until
it passed on.

14. Ένας ημιονηγός,…. πήρε είδηση
πως έσερνε πίσω του το κεφάλι
του γαϊδάρου θερισμένο απ' το
λαιμό. Μέσα στα κλειδωμένα
δόντια του το ζο κρατούσε
ακόμα μια τούφα κίτρινες
μαργαρίτες ματωμένες.
One of the drivers ……..
he finally realized that all
he had been pulling
behind him was the
donkey’s head, scythed
off at the neck. The
animal was still holding a
clump of daisies between
its clenched teeth, the
yellow petals speckled
with blood.

From the castle of Troy, Andromache calls,
to Hector who is setting off for battle,
with bitterness:
“My soldier, the battle will be won
by he who longs greatly to live.
Whoever goes to battle to die,

Thus the daughter of Gabriel
as I was leaving on the 20th of April
called to me from high on the balcony:
“Soldier if you want to win the battle,
make sure to love a girl.
