Read the excerpts from Hammurabi’s Code. You do not need to answer the questions following the reading. The reading includes laws and punishments, and other social details you will pick up as you read!
Part I – These questions need to be addressed in your response:
1. Why are codes of law necessary? What purpose(s) is(are) there to the codification of law?
2. Why have laws if they are not enforced?
3. Should leaders be subject to the law?
4. Identify at least 5 issues involved in legal vs illegal immigration and what remedy should be applied in each case you list. Be sure to distinguish between residents and citizens! These terms are not mutually inclusive or interchangeable.
Part II Hammurabi’s Code has a penalty for those who bear false witness. Today, there are so many versions of truth being argued. What should happen to those who would destroy the character of another individual if accusations are proven to be false, without creditable or provable merit? Should this penalty be applied to members of the government and media who willfully lie to the public?
