  • 2. •  An  ecosystem  in  a  community  of  plants  and   animals  living,  interac=ng,  and  feeding  in  the   same  environment.       •  The  living  things  of  an  ecosystem  rely  on  the   non-‐living  things,  such  as  weather,  sun,  water,   and  soil,  to  help  them  thrive.     •  Without  all  of  these  parts  the  ecosystem   would  not  be  able  to  survive.    They  rely  upon   each  other.     What  is  an  Ecosystem?
  • 3. Facts  about  the  Forest   •  The  forest  ecosystem  is  usually  a  wet  or  moist  place.    There  can  be  lots   of  rainfall  which  leads  to  a  very  humid  climate.       •  The  temperature  of  the  forest  ecosystem  varies  on  where  the  forest  is.     If  it  is  a  rain  forest  the  temperature  will  be  warm  most  of  the  year.     Other  forests  will  have  temperatures  that  will  vary  depending  upon  the   season.   •  The  animals  and  plant  life  that  live  in  the  forest  require  the  climate  that   is  part  of  the  forest  ecosystem.    They  need  the  moist  climate  to  live.     Some  animals  might  include  frogs,  birds,  insects,  and  mammals.
  • 4. Facts  about  the  Desert   •  The  desert  is  a  very  dry  ecosystem  geIng  very  liJle,  if  any,  rainfall  in   a  year.   •  Plants  and  animals  that  survive  in  the  desert  have  special   adapta=ons  that  allow  them  to  live  in  the  harsh  climate.    Some  of   these  adapta=ons  are:  big  ears  for  cooling  off,  storing  water  in  their   bodies  to  use  at  other  =mes,  burrowing  into  the  ground  to  stay  out   of  the  hot  sun,  and  by  laying  dormant  un=l  the  rain  comes.   •  Some  of  the  plants  and  animals  that  enjoy  this  ecosystem  are  the   camel,  elephant,  jack  rabbit,  and  the  cactus.
  • 5. Facts  about  the  Tundra   •  The  tundra  can  be  referred  to  as  a  cold  desert   •  The  tundra  ecosystem  is  only  has  two  season,  winter  and  summer.    In  the   winter,  the  tundra  can  get  as  cold  as  -‐18°  F.    In  the  summer,  it  can  get  as   warm  as  54°  F.   •  In  the  winter,  the  night  can  last  for  days  and  weeks  because  of  the  posi=on   of  the  sun.   •  Some  of  the  animal  and  plant  adapta=ons  of  tundra  dwellers  can  be  thick   fur,  blubber,  and  low  metabolism.   •  Some  animals  include  the  polar  bear,  snowy  owl,  caribou,  and  the  ar=c  fox.
  • 6. Facts  about  the  Ocean   •  The  ocean  makes  up  more  than  half  of  the  earth’s  surface.     •  The  climate  in  the  ocean  can  vary  depending  on  where  you  are.    The  closer  to   the  surface  the  warmer  the  water  is  and  the  deeper  you  go  down  the  colder   it  becomes.   •  Animals  and  plants  have  learned  to  adapt  to  the  condi=ons  of  the  ocean.     Some  animals  and  plants  live  so  far  down  in  the  ocean  that  there  is  no  light,   the  water  is  frigid,  and  the  pressure  is  tremendous.    Some  animals  will   migrate  and  follow  their  food  source  from  colder  waters  to  warmer  waters.   •  Some  animals  in  the  ocean  ecosystem  are  whales,  sharks,  many  kinds  of  fish,   shrimp,  and  sponges.
  • 7. •  What  would  happen  without  ecosystems?     •  Would  the  world  be  the  same  if  the  ecosystems  were   different?   •  Do  you  think  things  would  change  if  one  of  the  ecosystems   were  gone?   •  Could  animals  and  plants  in  one  ecosystem  be  able  to  survive   in  another?   •  Are  humans  hur?ng  the  world’s  ecosystems?  If  so,  why?    If   not,  why  do  you  think  that?   •  Could  we,  as  humans,  be  doing  more  to  help  the  ecosystems?
