INTRODUCTION
The Department of Health and family welfare Jharkhand is requesting proposals for research in
order to understand the calorific value of state of Jharkhand.
The proposal is to conduct a detailed survey of the food habits of the people of Jharkhand, hence
forth understand the calorific value provided by the staple and alternate food. The total area of
state of Jharkhand is about 79714 km2 with 24 districts, 260 blocks and 32,620 villages out of which
only 45% are electrified while only 8,484 are connected by roads and the population of the state is
around 32,966238. The literacy percentage is 67.5%.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
The purpose of this survey is to solicit the information regarding the food habits of people and
subjugate the same to the calories they take on an average normal day.
In this survey we will examine:




2






Firstly the different kind of communities that exists in Jharkhand?
What are the basic food patterns of the above found community?
Matching the same with the mentioned staple food of the state of Jharkhand as per
literature.
Assess the reasons why people choose a following pattern of food habit?
How much education qualifications and living standard effect the food habits of the people?

Xavier Institute of Social Service | Dr. Camil Bulke Path, Purlia Road, Ranchi -834001
Our methodology to develop survey instrument will combine literature review and focus
group interview process. Survey questions will be designed after a careful review of
related literature. In addition to the focus group interview another group which will be
advised by this focus group will be conducted. The purpose of this focus group would be to
gather and explore perceptions thoughts and opinions and feeling about the food habits.
The purpose of this group will be to interview the group of people who are an actual
representation of the whole community of the particular group. The findings of the
literature review and inputs from this focus group interview will be synthesized to develop
a survey questionnaire.

HYPOTHESIS
1. The people of Jharkhand have a low calorific profile value due to ill-eating habits and
poverty.
2. The calorific profile varies from the urban areas to the rural areas.
3. The consumption pattern can be gauged approximately by the calorific profile.

Review of Litreature – We have gone through various books, journals and research work done
in the following field and found the final chart which will be used in calculations of the calorific
value. In case the food item is not in this mentioned list. We will use instrument “BOMB CALORI
METER” to find the calorific value of the food item.

The proposal is to conduct a detailed survey of the food habits of the people of Jharkhand, hence forth understand the calorific value provided by the staple and alternate food. The total area of state of Jharkhand is about 79714 km2 with 24 districts, 260 blocks and 32,620 villages out of which only 45% are electrified while only 8,484 are connected by roads and the population of the state is around 32,966238. The literacy percentage is 67.5%. How much calories the different category of food provides as per health chart. Xavier Institute of Social Service | Dr. Camil Bulke Path, Purlia Road, Ranchi -834001
  • 3. Our methodology to develop survey instrument will combine literature review and focus group interview process. Survey questions will be designed after a careful review of related literature. In addition to the focus group interview another group which will be advised by this focus group will be conducted. The purpose of this focus group would be to gather and explore perceptions thoughts and opinions and feeling about the food habits. The purpose of this group will be to interview the group of people who are an actual representation of the whole community of the particular group. The findings of the literature review and inputs from this focus group interview will be synthesized to develop a survey questionnaire. HYPOTHESIS 1. The people of Jharkhand have a low calorific profile value due to ill-eating habits and poverty. 2. The calorific profile varies from the urban areas to the rural areas. 3. The consumption pattern can be gauged approximately by the calorific profile. Review of Litreature – We have gone through various books, journals and research work done in the following field and found the final chart which will be used in calculations of the calorific value. In case the food item is not in this mentioned list. We will use instrument “BOMB CALORI METER” to find the calorific value of the food item.
